Looks bloody good mate I’m 15 years old and I’m doing that to my dads as I’ve always loved his smiley ever since a little boy it’s a big learning curve but I’ll get there eventually
I've had to do all this.. . Went to nightschool paid 35.00 to do a creative welding course. Got a 98 tranny xlwb bus. It's none stop. On front shock mount area now.. takes some tenacity. Girl power hahaaa
I admire your abilities and most of all your willingness to take on such a rusty vehicle. I don't think one in that shape would be tackled over here unless it was a rare high dollar car of some sorts, but that's only my thoughts.
kentuckycowboy2 Hi mate.. thank you for your kind words... well I love a challenge and it certainly was... it's still going strong and the rust has kept away so far...thanks again mate...
spectra vectra These old beasts are a pleasure to work on... plenty of rust to kill. nearly finished the bodywork, got a miss fire to sort out, think the timing belt may have jumped a tooth so will be stripping it down hopefully in the next week..
spectra vectra Hopefully this I'll mk5 will stay solid for a few years.... The new ones rust out quick, seen a 58 reg needing new sills.... I'd love to do an old capri
Great video. 1 question- how did you attach the top of the step to the floor by the seat rail? Did you weld flush or overlap and drilled holes and spot weld? Cheers Vinny!
Hi mate, thanks for your kind words. I did an overlap .. seemed stronger that way... over a year has passed now and still looks like new..no rust coming through...
good work mate, my truck wasnt as good as this, i did the steps and sills, same as you, wings, arches, rebuilt the back of the cab, chasis rails, wishbone hanger at front. was a nightmare lol its not eprfect but its solid now good job that
Cold Start Daily cheers mate. Started the off side now.. bit if a nightmare. Bulkhead corner where it meets the floor as rotted right through. .. having to make a support brace before I can do the rest. Thank you for your positive coments. 👍
Thank you... the other side is proving to be a real challenge but getting there.. great old vans tho... engines pretty basic and easy to repair... I'll update the video soon as more to show... thanks again
Hello, would you be interested in doing a restoration of a 95 Ford transit campervan. Its a lovely factory camper..... but again has suffered a lot of rust. No mot currently.
Michael Langley it's all welded separately... the inner arch original is spot welded on the wings also spot welded... my out riggers were originally spot welded .....badly.. I've seam welded everything on so it's strong...
I think its down to poor steel quality and prep work of the metal. All the new panels I've fitted I treated with the best primer, used tiger seal on the welds... it's been over a year since I finished the old girl and so far no rust patches whatsoever...😁
scooterman happyman hi mate, yeh it's with it...when you see how much these go for on ebay without being restored it's shocking. The mrs is happy with it...lol
Hey mate, where did you get your panels from? Also i see you were MIG welding, what sort of amps were you running? I'm currently saving an old transit mk5 ex ambulance and spotted today that the sills were shot. Some one of the previous owners filled with expanding foam and then filled it :( Great video though, very helpful for when I go at mine :)
Hi Mate, I got the Panels on line from Central Panels. I did buy myself another welder. I got an OXFORD welder. More reliable and steady power. The sealy one was a 150 amp
Michael Langley Not so much design faults other than welding on wings which you could bolt on. If they bothered to treat the steel they would rot as they do. I treated the inner wheel arches with epoxy primer and guess what ... no rust coming through, even on the areas were I have welder.... I've seen mk7 transit with inner sills gone...not good
The repairs you have done will last along time. The lack of protection was the biggest issue on mk4/5 Transits. If Ford galvanized the bodies then they might not have rusted as bad. They also have water traps too at the bottom of the back doors on vans, steps, arches etc. You can't fault the Ford DI banana engine. Its bombproof. I think Ford have finally got the rust issues under control now on the Transits and other models.
Michael Langley I must admit to being shocked by some of the modern designs. I have recently done several transit customs were they had a so-called service. Then displaying water in fuel faults. On investigation I have found that the fuel filters are not being replaced, the filters on the custom are located underneath the nearside and get covered in mud and crud. The can be a pain to twist of as they are a cartridge type in a plastic casing. Plenty of WD40 and huge grips is the only way. Also I had to change REAR door hinges on a custom due to...........rust...lol. They have improved butmi do think the quality of the steel is poor. Bring back our own steel industry and do away with cheap import. Hope your well mate. Oh I've set my own business up now doing mobile.... check out my page...www.paulsbreakdownsolutions. co.uk also on Facebook too
It's crazy how badly they rot Pity as they were such a good van 😢. Peugeots from that era undercoated there cars a lot better and a lot are still on the road
piston head 1243 Yeh even the modern transits rot quickly at least I've saved this one from scrap heap.... MOT in the next few weeks so fingers crossed. Love the old DI engines so reliable, nice and basic, bit slow but plod along. I've blanked the EGR valve which has improved things, .....
Michael Langley .... I have noticed with some panels I buy off the net are rubbish for welding.... cheap nasty import steal.... ... and they rot so quick.. I use red oxide on everything it does help to keep it at bay..
Red oxide is good. Used it when i found rust under my platelight and other areas. Sadly the rust came back under the plate light since its a water trap. Now sanded all the rust and treated it with Vactan.
Looks bloody good mate I’m 15 years old and I’m doing that to my dads as I’ve always loved his smiley ever since a little boy it’s a big learning curve but I’ll get there eventually
Thank you for you kind words. It was a challenging job but worth it. Still going strong and pulling like s train....good luck with your project
I've had to do all this.. . Went to nightschool paid 35.00 to do a creative welding course. Got a 98 tranny xlwb bus. It's none stop. On front shock mount area now.. takes some tenacity. Girl power hahaaa
Very impressive, you should make more videos.
Nice. I've got a 96 smiley and it was like that all over and under, I'm just now doing a few days welding on it to get it through this year's MOT.
Good luck with that mate.... it's a never ending battle... my old girl still going...
I admire your abilities and most of all your willingness to take on such a rusty vehicle.

Hi mate.. thank you for your kind words... well I love a challenge and it certainly was... it's still going strong and the rust has kept away so far...thanks again mate...
Nice job, I'm doing the same parts on a MK6, got galvanised panels too. They are definitely designed to rot.
great trucks

had my mk 4 ten years never let me down solid to
spectra vectra
Hopefully this I'll mk5 will stay solid for a few years.... The new ones rust out quick, seen a 58 reg needing new sills.... I'd love to do an old capri
got mk 6 van 06 rust buket welded it to death crap steel from spain
Portuguese built Fords happened to be the best built ones since they use better steel.
Excellent work,respect mate...
Scott AKA Gypo
Cheers bud
nice job im facing the same problem on my Talbot express
Were did you get your all in one panel arch cill please thanks in advance Karl
thanks for sharing it looked epic like a piece of trash at the beginning but you p[ulled it back from the dead it now looks solid like a beast
What a great job you did !
where can these panels for my Mazda b2600?
I can't imagine how long you to get the front wings off.
How do you weld galvanised steel with mig dosent it give off toxic fumes?
good work mate, my truck wasnt as good as this, i did the steps and sills, same as you, wings, arches, rebuilt the back of the cab, chasis rails, wishbone hanger at front. was a nightmare lol its not eprfect but its solid now
good job that
Cold Start Daily cheers mate. Started the off side now.. bit if a nightmare. Bulkhead corner where it meets the floor as rotted right through. .. having to make a support brace before I can do the rest.
Thank you for your positive coments. 👍
Is the Transit a monocoque or body on frame?
Great job, just patched nearside step on mine, no where near as good as that.
Thank you... the other side is proving to be a real challenge but getting there.. great old vans tho... engines pretty basic and easy to repair... I'll update the video soon as more to show... thanks again

Hi mate, thanks for the offer but dont have the time ... sorry
@@paphotography5183 No worries thank you for the reply! Amazing work ! :)
Hi trying this on my motorhome .The inner wing structure where can you buy ?.
Hi Alan, I got my panels from central panels which are online...good luck
Are the repair panels originally part of one section or were they welded on seperately?
Michael Langley
it's all welded separately... the inner arch original is spot welded on the wings also spot welded... my out riggers were originally spot welded .....badly..
I've seam welded everything on so it's strong...
Nice job
Thank you, I've started the other side now. New outrigger etc. Getting there slowly
So much rust! Why do transits do this can it be prevented?
I think its down to poor steel quality and prep work of the metal. All the new panels I've fitted I treated with the best primer, used tiger seal on the welds... it's been over a year since I finished the old girl and so far no rust patches whatsoever...😁
Fair play for doing that. Most would’ve scrapped it
good job but is it worth it

Michael Langley

I think every car has a design fault.
The letter r in Ford stood for rust.
Looked like mine.

ANNE & PAUL PHOTOGRAPHY we turbod one in an owl van for the track. Maxxes out the fuel pump and 2 bar of boost went like a schalded cat
Great job the van looked fucked to me
What ever sort of steel or galvinizing Ford used was poor but mind you our climate doesn't help either. Mercedes Sprinters are even worse for rust.
Michael Langley .... I have noticed with some panels I buy off the net are rubbish for welding.... cheap nasty import steal.... ... and they rot so quick.. I use red oxide on everything it does help to keep it at bay..
