      Bessie was around 14(or older) when the affair started. Katherine of Aragon was 16 when she married Arthur. And was supposed to arrive in England year prior.
      At Tudor times it was normal for a girl to be married at 14(and some were already widowed and married again aged 14). Your outrage is unnecessary.
      You're pushing modern standard upon 16th century. Why then be angry at just Henry and not all rest of those men who married girls under 18?

    • @janehaylay1152
      @janehaylay1152 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@juyeonie731 That is not true. (At least not in England) By 16th century this practice was already frowned upon and many nobles married their daughter 14, 16, or even 18 years old. Because they already noticed that being married younger than that causes troubles.
      (Look a bit into Tudor noble houses, most first brides 14-18 by end of 15th century and in early 16th century. Not saying all cared about the health of their daughter or wife. Even nowadays not everybody cares if a girl is too young...)
      ...
      It was mostly royals who still married daughters younger than that and it was expected that if the bride was 12 or 13 than that her husband would wait(though not all did) until she is older.

      Looking at all the promo pics and previews, imma guess they won’t cover Catherine’s last pregnancy. It makes no sense in the show why Henry would give up hope after 3 pregnancies, 2 which were successful (and Infant mortality was common) and the other a miscarriage because of Catherine’s involvement in battle. I wish they covered Catherine’s probable eating disorder which most likely affected her pregnancies.

    • @user-oj7bn5fq4m
      @user-oj7bn5fq4m 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@Jazzzzyyyy__ It’s a theory some people have put forward. It appears that Catherine started fasting increasingly more during her widowhood when she most likely suffered from depression. This is known to be excessive because the Pope ordered her in 1505 to stop fasting so much or else it could affect her fertility in her future marriage to the then Prince Henry. She defied these orders and continued to fast excessively. Luis Caroz the Spanish ambassador who Catherine trusted a lot wrote about how Catherine fasted so much and it worried him and the physicians who thought it was affecting her pregnancies. She refused to stop and went days without eating. It’s probable that this was because she was religious, but she also wanted to give Henry a prince, why didn’t she stop fasting like her doctors told her to? It is likely she could’ve had some form of an eating disorder that was obviously not known about in the 1500s. Maybe it was a coping method for her during her widowhood? However, This definitely contributed to her miscarriages and stillbirths. Lots of other royal women, including her mother Isabel and Catherine de Medici followed the advice of physicians after unsuccessful pregnancies and had big families after using a physician’s advice. I wonder why Catherine didn’t do the same.
      It’s honestly sad, Catherine’s widowhood years were very interesting and full of scandal at some points it gives us a look into a princess who went destitute and learned a lot about the crazy world around her. She had lots of snakes around her and men who used her during those years. I wish the Spanish princess was more accurate in that regard, because it was VERY inaccurate.

      Well, Bessie is both a participant and victim here. Well, for a girl of her status, being loved and showered affections from a king that gives a VIP Pass for good rewards here. Henry, in history, said that he was "in love" with Bessie as she was everything a king wants in a woman. Bessie was his ideal woman: young, beautiful, intelligent, acquiescent, well raised, musical, an enthusiastic rider, and a graceful dancer. As for her being a victim, she gave birth to his illegitimate son and had to be separate from raising her boy and marrying another man by order of the king. Finally, the king no longer wished to see her again, private and publicly.

    So Lina most likely knows about Bessie and Henry. I’m going to guess she wouldn’t tell Catherine after Catherine’s spat at her last episode. Mary Boleyn’s shade towards Bessie was interesting, is the affair public?? Cuz irl Bessie’s affair with the King wasnt public knowledge in the English court.
    It’s actually refreshing that Bessie didn’t act rude to Catherine. She was really young when she became Henry’s mistress, it was most likely not her choice to become involved with Henry.

      Most historians state that Bessie Blount was born around the year 1500, possibly even before that. It is agreed that her affair with King started by end of 1514 or in 1515.
      And it certainly wasn't platonic for several years.
      Hence she couldn't be 12 when she caught his eye, but around 14 or older.
      ...
      Yes, she was Katherine's maid of honour, but that term was used for all unmarried girls in Queen's household. That doesn't mean she was 12.
      Spanish Princess is doing a great job at creating a totally inaccurate story as it is. No need to add more fictional things and slander Henry VIII further. He already did enough of horrible things as it is.

    • @saminy5443
      @saminy5443 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's actually a really early date for Bessie's birth year. (Since we don't actually know when she was born, but that is one of the earliest mentioned, some others put her in her mid twenties when they start sleeping together). However, it is widely believed that Katherine Howard was his youngest lover and she was 19 when they met/started sleeping together. Also, and this is sometimes hard to believe considered how gross H8 is (especially later on in his life), but during his early years at least (pre-Katherine Howard), he wasn't into teens. For probably a lot of practical reasons (women that age don't usually live long after they get pregnant, if they can produce a child to term) but I just don't think (at that point at least) he was a pedophile.

    I was wondering if Catherine was going to confront Bessie. I mean I know this isn't historically accurate, but it makes for good drama and reminds me of the scene in The Tudor's when Catherine says a similar thing to Anne Boleyn." I wonder if the writers were thinking of that when they wrote it. I'm not sure if the other ladies knew beforehand, more than likely most of them did, but if they didn't they do now that Catherine announced it. She was partially right. Henry did recognize Henry Fitzroy and then his affair with Bessie did come to an end after that. Then shortly after that, he began sleeping with Mary Boleyn. I think that was Mary in the carriage next to her, but it was hard to tell. She was throwing some shade, but she is going to be the next mistress. It was speculated that she also had Henry's son and a daughter as well, but if they were his he didn't recognize either of them.

      Hell if anything they made her worse. It also doesn't help that they've written her to hate her daughter Mary. Which is completely inaccurate because Catherine loved Mary so much so that she was a very hands on mother, which was considered odd during this time period. Even Henry VIII was happy about Mary's birth because at this point they had already dealt with 4 previous pregnancies' (3 stillbirths and 1 SIDS) that resulted in dead children. So, they didn't know if they were going to have anymore children afterwards until they had Mary who was basically a rainbow baby. Henry saw this a sign from God that if they could have a baby girl then they could have sons. But with the way the show is going it's doing nothing, but creating even more unnecessary drama that doesn't need to be focused on. Not to mention having Catherine hate her daughter makes her look like a fake feminist and a big hypocrite. She's been preaching about feminism and female empowerment for the past two seasons, yet the minute she has a daughter all of the sudden she's like "A girl. What use is that?!" Like bitch what?!
