    No monarch would've entertained a marriage proposal if they thought that Mary wasn't legitimate. If anything it was Elizabeth who wouldve been rejected as a possible bride because Henry and Anne marriage wasnt widely accepted as legal.

      @@Tabroxfcc I'm not sure when Mary and Phillip get betrothed but it was not when Mary was little as Phillip was 11 years her junior, plus he married the Princess from Portugal. I think Mary waited to become Queen as she felt the council might not like the idea of her marrying a Hapsburg ruler of Spain so it waited for her to become Queen.

      @@janefelix3821 There was talk of a betrothal between Mary and Charles, however, Charles decided he didn’t want to wait for Mary to come of age and instead married Isabella of Portugal. Mary eventually we’d Phillip of Spain after she ascended to the English throne.

    One thing I find remarkable about this series is the willingness of people to talk to the King of England like he is a complete chump.
    They wouldn't have talked that way to Keith Michell's Henry VIII. Heck, they wouldn't have talked that way to Keith Michell!

      Actually, the history and the few biographies were telling the truth. Back then, England was just a small island. Not a great kingdom compare to Spain and France at the time. Henry VIII was treated not a equal fitting compare to Francis I of France. In fact, they said that Henry did phsyically fight Francis over the slights he made against Henry.
      That was when Henry wanted to be this great king that people will want to meet with awe in his presences. But back then people like Catherine of Aragon, Worsely and someone else always taken adtavnage of him which made the future tyrant king someday.
      Henry wanted to make his first decisons which is agreement to marry his daughter Mary to Francis son to break new allainaces. Which sadly didn't end it happening at all.

    Louis XII was not the father of Francis I. Also, Mary wasn't at the Field of the Cloth of Gold. Also, they already had a marriage contract from 1518. Also...ugh, nevermind.

    By no stretch of the imagination did any royal European dynasty or individual ruler, no matter if they were aligned with or against the Hapsburgs or England, Catholic or Protestant, ever view Henry and Catherine’s marriage as anything but valid. They must be confusing Mary in this scene, with Elizabeth (Henry’s daughter by Anne Boleyn, not yet born then). Mary was the most eligible and desired princess on the marriage market at the time, as her husband would be Jure Uxoris King of England, with no clear male heir in sight for Henry. Even after Henry declared her a bastard, and annulled his first marriage, was she still considered legitimate and a desirable match outside of England. Deuteronomy 25:5-10: Levirate Marriage. No need even for the papal dispensation. This specifically applies to the marriage of Henry and Catherine. Leviticus 18:16 and Leviticus 20:21 only applies if you have a sexual relationship or affair with your still living brother’s wife, the principle would apply to his marriage to Anne Boleyn, not Catherine, as he had a sexual relationship with Mary Carey prior to marrying Anne. If the Pope had no right to grant such a dispensation, Neither did Henry himself. Either way, his marriage to Anne was the non-valid one and Elizabeth his bastard daughter.

    Part of why he was obsessed with a son not just because of their value at this time but past history
    His father won the crown by conquest and his reign was challenged consistently. House of Tudor was still young compared to for example Valois in France or Trastamara in Spain. The throne could be snatched from him.
    The last woman to hold the throne in England was Empress Matilda which went horribly wrong. He didn’t want to die leaving the succession in chaos undoing his father and grandmother’s work.

    Ok a few points
    Louis was not Francis's father. Why on earth have they made Queen Claude look so old and overweight she was only in her 20s at this time maybe even younger. Also Mary would of not of come to France probably for fear of disease as she was the heir to the throne and if her father got sick and she did as well then England would be powerless. And the foreign accents are terrible in this

    • @edoboleyn
      @edoboleyn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re right on all points except that while Claude died in her 20s, she was not a physically attractive woman. She endured numerous pregnancies and her plumpness is mentioned by those who knew her, as was her homeliness. She also had considerable scoliosis. That said, she was also remembered as kind, generous, and gracious.
      I’m more distracted by how incredibly bad her costume is, but in this show that’s the least of historical crimes. XD
