I'm never blatantly rude to someone on TH-cam when they've gone to the effort of creating videos and good music to share with the World. What gives people the licence to be nasty and basically horrible to those people. If you don't agree with their point of view on a topic, move on.

I think a big part of the problem is that people today look at musicianship only working as a career if you make it big. And that is just silly, there should and can be plenty of space in the middle for musicians to thrive.

As a musician myself I'm proud of what you are doing, I don't get why so many musicians are so eager to give their music for free and even get upset if you want people to be compensated for their efforts. That same people usually later is complaining about how hard and unfair the music business is and how easy is for musicians to go into depression and mental health issues.
We have to be smarter and we have to be united, big corporations like Spotify are NOT your friends nor the way to go to make things better for artists.

To any who doubt the usefulness, I've been hovering around the edge of diving into Ms. Spender's music for a while, being interested in what she has to say. Each time I encounter her videos here, I am made more likely to switch from a mere viewer to a very small part of her financial backing. It's surely not the only way to build a community, but she does this one well.

You are brilliantly sailing through the unknown waters of musician independence in 2023. You are a prolific artist and you understand this new platform of the business side. It isn't a job, it's a life. As Rick Beato once quipped: nothing to being a TH-camr, I just work a hundred hours a week.😆
You have my support as one of SO MANY OF US who live vicariously through you. The naysayers complain simply because they can't do what you have already accomplished.
Can't wait to hear more from the CD, "Chicago" is a great start. Can't wait to receive my copy.

So many 'artists' seem to have forgotten the 'art' part of it. Not everyone is going to appreciate your music and your insight, but for every one of those people who have that self-entitlement to tell you how this or that will fail, I wonder what percentage of them really have what it takes to go from a starving artist to a success story. I have watched you for quite a few years and find your outlook and trials to be great content about the struggles of being a real artist. Keep doing what you do, and don't listen to the people who want to do nothing better than be trolls. I'd bet if they spent as much time supporting artists (who are putting their souls on display in the hope that someone will appreciate it), and less time being trolls that they'd be much happier people and maybe a little more human.

On the strength of your videos I've pre-bought a copy of your album. The only cd player I have is in my (ancient) car. I will listen to the album online almost exclusively. Born in 1959, I have eschewed physical copies of music altogether. But after watching this channel for a while I am willing to pay for the bit of plastic to support you. Most of those questioning you in these comments cannot see the force of your personality in gathering fans. Old style music stars had their music and whatever the music corporation they were signed to allowed out there. You, Mary, are speaking directly to me (well, it feels like). That's pretty important, and has persuaded me to put my money where my mouth is.

Thanks for this Mary. I recently went over my first 100 youtube subscribers (whoo!) I've had some of these same thoughts about these streaming platforms and whether one should play or not. I'm getting ready to record my next album so the release strategy is top of mind for me. I love how BandCamp treats their artists (especially relative to platforms like Spotify) but it's hard to build an audience there because so few people use it. Keep doing what you're doing. Your videos are very informative and inspiring to a lot of people, including myself. I just recently decided I want to try to become a musician, pretty much from scratch, perhaps as part of a midlife crisis (I'm 41). It's something I've daydreamed about since I was a teenager but never actually tried. I'm aware that the first thing I have to do is actually learn to play and that alone is going to take time, but I'm hoping that maybe within a few years time I can get good enough to form a band with some like minded people and make a half decent living. I'm keeping my expectations low because I'm mature enough to know that this is not an easy goal and will take a time and a lot of effort. Don't quit your day job and all that. But you and others like you (I discovered your channel from TH-cam recommending your interview with Samurai Guitarist, who is another content creator I've recently been following) have given me hope that such goals are actually possible for someone who wants it enough to put in the effort.
You come across as a knowledgeable and capable person who is passionate about what you do. The fact that you do actually make a living from your passion is a clear sign that you actually know what you're talking about. I've always believed in the value of constructive criticism, but I've also long believed that most criticism you get (on any subject) from random anonymous schmucks on the internet comes from people who either don't know nearly as much as they think they do or are just jealous haters, if not both. Please keep doing what you're doing, be yourself.
    And thank you.

Good on you, Mary. I admire your ability to deal with the patronising comments in such a coherent and positive way - after all you have spent more time and effort tackling the issues they are so sure they know all about. You are also a great example of how to think for yourself and not succumb to the giant squid that is Spotify, sucking the income away from small, independent artists and depositing it in the accounts of the already rich and successful artists. (I want my sub to go to the people I actually listen to, which it doesn't).
I think you have a bright future not just as a musician, but as a music business educator and pioneer. Three cheers for people like you who are an example to others, and demonstrate that streaming isn't the answer for many musicians and writers.

You go Mary! Most walks of business and indeed life have naysayers. I was self employed (a company owner) for nearly 20 years and was successful for 3 basic reasons… I was very good at my profession but worked harder than most others, I did not do what everyone else in my field did (I offered services they couldn’t), and I had multiple income streams - but from a relatively narrow bandwidth (I didn’t try to be all things to all people). When I retired a couple years ago, I put my energy into music, my avocation for 50 years. You are obviously succeeding, for the same basic reasons… not to say these 3 things are all it takes, they’re not. But, they are pretty universal in the business world, and in life. I for one applaud what you are doing and your willingness to take chances with unproven directions. You will continue to succeed, and most importantly… you seem happy!!! Our world needs more happiness and people like you create that! BRAVO! BTW, I’m anxiously awaiting your album! 🎶🎵

This is something people overlook, and I did up until a few years ago - TH-camrs are not simply “people talking to cameras”.
They are a media company, and very professional in what they do, not only the video quality, but essentially all the aspects you’d expect from a media company - seeking advertisers, studying their audience, analyzing data, prioritizing high revenue content. It is a business, and when well run and with a bit of luck, it can get you far.

I really appreciate the perspective you offer in your videos! It's helpful to know that even being successful doesn't stop the occasional hate comment from coming in...it's really easy to start doubting yourself when people pour hatred at you just because you put a video on the internet, but I really like the way you framed it that there are people that will like what you do and you just have to find them. You get to control the camera of course, but you've always come across as genuine and this video is another good example. You could have approached some of these comments much differently (I mean, seriously, "and do something like become a mother".......what just happened? What year is this?) but you approached each of them tactfully and took the opportunity to share experience and wisdom when appropriate. I agree with many of the other comments here: What you're doing is working so keep being you and doing things the way that is "right" for you.

Hello Mary. I recently pre-ordered Super, Sexy Heartbreak. Found you on TH-cam. Listened to your artistry on Qobuz and found you and your music to be inspiring. Coming from a British family also worked in your favor. 😁Let this serve as testimony that your formula will work. Damn the naysayers and full steam ahead! Take care.❤

Found you via the Jim Croce breakdown of "Operator" you did with Rick Beato. Looking forward to consuming your music no matter which format you choose!

This is Gold Mary. Love you so much. Your insights are so informative and inspiring. I am somewhat surprised by the level of stupidity in opinions expressed to you by those foolish commenters who are just pontificating. Those who are Real always win. Forget the industry fools panicked by this truth talk. ❤

    Hi Mary, great video!
Just a thought, regarding the concept of some thing “physical that your fans can hold “. We can definitely wear a T-shirt or a hat, put up a poster or drink coffee out of branded cup.
The stems idea is interesting, but have you ever considered a graphic picture book?
For a portion of what it might cost to print physical CDs and graphic design for them, you could make a physical, full color book that contains behind-the-scenes photos, some special notes from you, maybe images of your original lyric sheets, etc.
Now there is something we can hold in our hands, and actually enjoy looking at and reading while we listen to your music, however we do including streaming it.
It’s a real book, doesn’t have to be super long, but it’s an extension of what many people have done for LPs and CDs…perhaps.
I for one, would love to check out your charts and lyric sheets…studio pics, guitar images etc
not only is it fun for your fans, but it stands as a very useful physical object, that doesn’t compromise how your music is released and still add to your margins.
Speaking for myself, I would gladly pay between 20 and $50 for something like that from an artist like you.
You could even sign a few and personalize notes for a slightly higher fee for those interested in that.
    Keep up the good work!

    1:16 $0.12 is 12 cents tho….
Great video though. The streaming vs other music distribution services is always an interesting chat.
And also it’d be cool for you to do a video on Eurovision. I am a massive fan of it and there are multiple interesting connections that can be drawn between Eurovision and the music industry in general with the tendencies of different genre ms to be heard more than others, the whole performance element of it, the importance of the artist and how they work with execs, how it has been so instrumental to societal change, artists who became big from Eurovision etc. It would be a super interesting video topic if you would want to do it. Love your channel, keep it up!!

I was very much looking forward to Part Dux of the comings and goings of Spotify! Appreciate this in-depth discussion Mary! REALLY enjoyed you keeping it real too with some of those scathing comments! Awesome that you shared them with your Fan Base! I'm quite sure that back in my Know It All 20's, I'd have had an answer IF someone had asked me!🤣 As an Adult Kid, I just duct tape my yapper and listen so I might learn something! And in The Mary Spender Community, I do along with some chuckles too! Cheers From Across The Pond In Ohio👋

Keep at it Mary. You are a true artist. Your skills and music are fantastic. I work in the Entertainment industry. Mentioned your name to a local Sound operator and they agreed with my excitement for your album. Much love and hopes for you

Makes me angry becuase making consistent and well made videos takes a ton of work! I make videos in my spare time and sometimes I don't feel like doing it between that, my music, and my full time job. You've earned every subscriber Mary! Good on you for not losing heart!

Well done Mary. If you don't try you don't know. Having spent 30 plus years in the Music industry I witnessed firsthand it's down fall, mainly by the march of new technology and the Record companies' denial and lack of imagination in how to deal with it. A new model must be out there and it seems to me that you are approaching it in a pretty pragmatic way.
On a side note; it always amazes me how little appreciation is given for a musician's trade. How many other professions require such dedication from childhood to become an actual Musician....

I doubt I would have found your music randomly on Apple Music or spotify, I found you on TH-cam and I am a follower because I like your music but also like to hear your opinion and love your voice.

I feel you've got a solid handle on how to manage a right-sized career in 2023. Seeing how you and other modern musicians navigate the current landscape is inspiring; but it also confirms I could never do it.

I like how some people don't think social media has gatekeepers. Social media is just as bad at bottlenecking most artists. TH-cam and Spotify included. The numbers are horrible for most people.

Music in the form of digital bits is fleeting. Almost no one do a backup of their phones, and few use a paid cloud service. Phones last for few years, and cloud space gets lost when the subscription is no longer paid. All of this to say, that digital-only music is easily lost, and the existence of a media like the CD is fundamental for your fans. LP are even better, both for the analogue format, and because you can include much more printed material with the disc.
    Thank you for the video...

it's funny how some people think being rich and famous is the only real meaning of success. these people are probably not living their own dreams so they try to crap on others. keep doing your thing, Mary!

I haven't got a cd player anymore. but I hope you eventually release your digital on other platforms since I dislike Spotify intensely. I am glad you don't take serious some of these people who have no clue about how good a musician is vs how famous a musician is. There are tons of musicians who can run circles around many of the famous ones, but the music they make doesn't have mainstream appeal. Good to hear that the new musicians coming up have multiple options for making a living. When I was young the middle class musician was a rarity unless they were willing to play lousy cover gigs in restaurants along with teaching. It always seemed that you either poor or well off, nothing in between. Ever since the early aughts it has been easier to be a working musician. While mainstrea media may be getting more and more boring, Music is thriving and doing amazingly well off the beaten path. good on you.
