Apple is doing the sensible thing here. They've been investigating this concept, likely before any of their competitors. The difference is, Apple is generally less likely to ship a compromised product. Right now, foldables are much more expensive and they all have quality issues. Apple is smart by not releasing a product that is not worthy of their name.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 since launch, and the Fold 3 before that. So almost 3 years of daily driving a foldable. For me, i love this thing. No quality issues except the factory internal screen protector formed a small bubble and replaced it.
Wife has iPhone 14 pro - really well rounded premium device. We're a dual ecosystem home and im very familiar with current iOS and Android 14. After a month of use it was clear to me im not going back to a slab phone. And yes, normies are always mystified when i have it open filming our son's sports. It gets lots of positive attention from normies who cant believe it.

I have had the Z Fold3, Z Fold4 and now the Z Fold5. I have never ever encountered any issues with the foldable displays on them, even when it comes to scratches. There has only been one single issue I have had with them in those 3 years of using them. And the issue was with the hinge on the Z Fold4 that wouldn't fold out fully flat after 8 months of use (it was more 165 degrees folded out). So, I got that covered by the warranty.
Now, with the Z Fold5, they have dramatically improved the hinge-system on it over earlier hinges used. The hinge on my Z Fold5 feels as good and as smooth as new after almost 6 months of usage. And I haven't encountered any weird noises or cracking noises from dust in the hinge that would appear sometimes on the Z Fold3 and Z Fold4 when opening and closing the inner screen.
So, my question is. Do Apple test the foldable screens like they test their normal glass displays or something?
Because it would be flat out stupid if they did.
I'm asking as the inner screen is actually pretty solid towards how it's used. Remember, the inner screen is ONLY affected by damages when the inner screen is folded out. Once the inner screen is folded up (closed), like when you have it in your pocket, there is pretty much nothing that can damage the inner screen, while the main screen on a normal candy bar smartphone is always affected by external things that can damage the screen.
And many are also forgetting that the Z Folds comes with a preinstalled screen protector that you can change out to a new one if the first one gets scratched a lot. So, there is extremely little chance to get the actual inner screen under the screen protector damaged this way. You basically have to intentionally do something forcefully to damage it.
So, if you handle the foldable phones a little more carefully over how you might handle a normal smartphone, then I'm pretty sure you will be all fine with a foldable phone.

A foldable iPhone would be great if it had all features of the iPhone 6 Pro Max and was large enough when open for reading. I could replace my iPad Mini with it. It would clearly be pretty expensive but it works if I can simplify the number of Apple gadgets I have to get things done. For me the type of fold that is best is the Microsoft Surface Duo. The Surface Duo hinge does not have the Samsung foldable hinge problem and would work much better for me. Interesting that Microsoft is so often the leader (as with the Surface Pro which does full Windows while the iPad Pro is still stuck with only iPad OS).

I have never seen anyone with a foldable phone in person, only videos and in store displays. Personally, I don't want a folding phone, I want to be able to pull it out and just use it. If I want a larger display, I have an iPad Pro. I have never been out in public and thought, 'I wished my phone folded open to have a bigger display' lol. In not watching movies or playing games when im out, so a larger display like that would be a waste.

    I've used a Z Flip 5 for a while now. SInce launch.
I really L O V E the folding (flipping) form factor. The Z Flip 5 has a nice small outer display that makes using the phone USEFUL.
I love checking my notifications without pulling out a massive brick, I love reading or replying to a message all from a small screen that takes away from distractions, I love being able to tuck my phone in my pocket as if it were a wallet.
I could keep going, but I would never finish 😅.
The only thing I do not like is that it's not convenient with my current ecosystem.
I have AirPods (Pro and Max), AirTags, iPad, Apple Watch, and MacBook, and I've really tried to get used to not having an iPhone, but it's not working
I can't seamlessly share photos or files between my devices.
iMessage is surprisingly useful when connecting with friends or family.
Apples Ecosystem is just so good.
So hopefully they eventually release an iPhone Flip.

The main (and only, for me) reason to choose for a foldable (flip)-phone is that you can safely put in in your pocket! Of course, there are some problems from time to time but you don't mention the number of broken screens by 'normal' phones because of putting them
'half' in and 'half' out of your pocket, and cracking its display...
Of course, some extra caution is necessary f.e. when going at the beach and preserving it from sand coming in... but I consider that just common sense and not a 'disadavantage'.

  • @MBeano

The biggest benefit of a foldable, for me, .would be split screen / multitasking.
Having 1 screen work as the "menu" part, and the other screen as the work area is ideal. Example in a mail app, having the mailboxes and lists and options on one screen, then the actual opened email on the other screen
For multiple tasking, one app on 2 screen, another app open on the second screen, then it could be easier copy/paste drag between the two.
The OS needs to be easier and more intuitive in this "split screen" format. Perhaps having "dock" which would make switching between apps seamless, while still keeping the app you want open an visible - like swipe the dock in from the side, then go into a "select mode" (an option that allows for switching), and maybe then be able to scroll either of the two open apps to find the new app or doc or whatever you want to replace within the selected "screen/side"

I saw q Motorola rep at BestBuy about a year ago showing off their foldable phone. It was an incredibly good display, and I saw no line. On top of that, when phone was folded, it had a display outside so you could still use the phone. The display was on one side only, which made sense. It had pretty good specs, too. I wanted to buy it, but she said it won't be ready for another 3 months. By that time, I decided to go with the latest Samsung flagship phone.

I have a ZFold 3 and most people are impressed with the tech. The use case is pretty straight forward being able to carry a bigger display.
I live in Denmark and my unit held up nicely without having to baby it at all. Multiple drops and the occasional dirt/lint/micro-whatevers in my pockets haven't ruined the display.
I don't know what Apple's standards would be for their take on a folding display but I'm pretty sure other weird factors such as humidity / temperature all affect the display's rigidity as well.
Samsung and BOE holding over 95% of the market Apple will most likely deal with Samsung should they ever release a foldable

I might be the only one but to me Fold phones should be something between Fold5 and what ASUS tried and failed with their external display accessory (I had to google it: asus rog phone-3 dual screen. To me this was the right direction, just the execution failed.)
It would be nice if it's like external screen (preferably with its own battery that could act as a slim power bank as well) you could attach it to the main phone (like the keyboards attatch to the iPads / Samsung S9 but with stronger connection so they won't fall).
Now you have the option to have 1 or 2 displays, the only disadvantage is you visibly see they are 2 screens (but you notice that on Fold5 anyway) and they are supposed to be for multi tascing. Who wants to watch videos in Fold5's terrible aspect ratio.

I don't think foldables are designed to replace traditional phones, it's really for mutlitaskers.
Samsung has high quality standards as well. They do their phones in concepts. First, there was the curved display phones to make the technology of bendable glass cheaper and refined, all that payed off because they were able to do the first foldable phone. They kept improving on the foldable phone and now Im using my first foldable via Z Fold 6 and it is really refined experience. No issues with the screen so far. It very well could be good enough to push Apple to finally pull the trigger. They've come a long way but sometimes you just gotta put it out there and learn from experience. As a person who is always using my iPad…. I find my iPhone basically useless. The main factor is multitasking. Having at least two windows open is essential for what I need to do for daily tasks. My next phone will 100% be a foldable

Apple's Vision Pro is their combo iPad and I think in the future it will get iPhone connectivity. I see iOS, iPadOS, and VisionOS rolling into one OS so they all can easily interact with each other. Vision Pro will mainly just be an monitor for OSX so to do real Pro level work you'll still need a Mac nearby. Apple never wants one device do it all they want you to need multiple devices. So Apple ecosystem of future will be Vision Pro combined with a iPhone and Mac computer.

Apple should never do it because people will hate on them because the screen scratches easily. Doesn’t matter if other screens do to. They always get so much negative attention on durability and similar designs between generations even though some other manufacturers basically do the same. If they would enter the ring i would love to see the fold formfactor not the flip that folds into the same size we already know.

Apple is waiting for the other companies to spend big money on research and development on the foldable technology. Once the others have failed enough before a winning formula has been achieved, they will jump in and will receive praise for waiting and perfecting it. After that, all the fanboys will suddenly realize the utility of a foldable and buy it.

  • @Alex-vp4ky

Ive hardly seen folding phones in the wild. Maybe on one hand level of encounters. I personally own a fold and ios products. Id love a folding ipad mini but i recognize folding tablets are not the wave consumers want, let alone folding phones.
Apple can wait on this project for a decade and nothing bad would come of it. Foldables are a cool segment of the market but not the future or an “investment”. there just arent enough practical reasons to have one over a regular slab phone.

  • @Epicgamer_Mac

So this video title already ticked me off at Samsung 😂😂
I’m actually excited for the new foldable iPhone. Apple will do it right unlike so many other companies. They’ll combine the best of good phones like the OnePlus Open and Samsung Z Fold, and scrap other phones like the Pixel Fold that just aren’t as good.
