Gallows Pole, Battle of Evermore or the Kennedy Center Honors performance of Stairway to Heaven by Heart with the 3 surviving members of Zeppelin in the audience and John Bonham's son playing drums. Best cover ever. Jimmy Page nearly jumped out of seat he was so excited and Robert Plant was moved to tears by the moment.
This is without a doubt the most musically challenging song in their repertoire, though almost every other recording is just as 'good' if not as complex.
My opinion: the best song in rock history. The intensity, the rhythm, the lyrics, bass, drums, lead guitar. It is all at a fever pitch throughout the song. What a masterpiece. A symphony of greatness.
JPJ to me is the heart of the band, and this song really showcases it. He always steps back for the light to shine on Robert, Bonzo or Jimmy, but he's the one in back holding everything down.
This is Zep doing prog rock. Plant has said that in his opinion the musicianship of Page, JPJ and Bonham in this piece is the best in rock. It was a challenge for him to find the lyrics to fit such a complex and huge composition I think he succeeded though, yes? He wrote them while recovering from a terrible car accident and was in a wheelchair when it was recorded
Larry Napier you are a lucky dude! This is actually Helene, not my husband at left. I say that that because otherwise my next remark wouldn’t make any sense. My maiden name was Napier. Not that common in the States. Family from Scotland. Perhaps we’re veeeery distantly related...going back a couple hundred years.😉
When they recorded this, they recorded the basic track with Page only playing the rhythm track, and the rest of the band thought Page was a little nuts and didn't have much faith in the song. Page stayed in the studio overnight and recorded all the overdubbed guitar tracks and solos. When Plant, Jones, and Bonham heard the final product, they were astonished. Page really is an absolute Master and Genius. I put him up there with Beethoven, Mozart, and all the other great composers.
I agree, I think he's in that bracket. If you can find albert hall 1970 when he goes away from robert in Dazed and does that insanity with the bow,( for some reason harder and harder to find these days on youtube) that is pure musical Genius, not to mention his ability to use Music as the conduit of the message. When you feel that power, perceptible under certain circumstances, expressed with deliberation through music, you know you are dealing with something not of the mundane. The How and the Why is not a concept our tiny minds are able to contend with, some may say deliberately so, all we can do is say the man is the man is a Genius, and I agree.
John Bonham is giving a master class on drums in this song. Dude is putting in work from start to finish. It should also be noted that Robert Plant recorded his vocals for this album from a wheel chair due to a car accident he suffered in Greece prior to recording the album.
As a bassist I'd say it's always that way with bassists, but JPJ is one of the most dynamic bassists, a great writer plays the tunes the way they should be never over-doing it note wise. On this song he's very precise and I notice he plays with a pick a lot but not always - sometimes he uses fingerstyle.
Bonzo is next level on this track... in fact, they all are. Robert was injured in a serious car crash and actually recorded this album in a wheelchair. You need to get to the last studio album In Through the Out Door, and check out the epic Carouselambra as well as Bonzo's masterful drum skills on Fool In the Rain. Some of his tastiest drum work, IMO.
I bought the first 6 albums. Then I got this album and I was in shock. This tune is so rich with sounds coming from all four corners of the band. Led Zeppelin heavy metal. John Paul Jones crunching the E String on his bass. Jimmy Page's most phenomenal guitar solo. This song is underrated big time
I like how you compare Achilles to in my time of dying specific to bonham. I couldn’t agree more. Those two songs were amazing with the marriage between the guitars and drums. Two of my favorite Zepplin songs maybe my two favorite
My buddy and I drove 6 hours to Dallas, walked around the airport awhile looking at all the different people, then 6 hours back home, mainly just to party on Led Zeppelin! Crazy Days!
The song's worth it just for that atmospheric guitar fade in and fade out alone. Even that one riff is more memorable than most bands write in their entire careers yet Page used it simply as an intro/outro.
Never heard this song before - thought I had heard all Led Zepp tracks. Needless to say, I have just ordered the album "Presence". It's crazy that they block these reactions when so many of them have resulted in me buying the album.
Finally, someone reacted to this song thank you. In my opinion, as a musical experience for the listener and the actual musicianship happening, this is some of Zep at its finest. These guys nailed it. The rest of the album is worth a listen too, if you like, can get really funky at times.
Bonham’s drumming on this track is insane. I can’t work out the main time signature (8/4, maybe?), but there are several. And he just slips back and forth between them as if it’s easy. It’s not.
This was after Plant's horrible car crash. He was in a wheelchair singing it. Drums were recorded in a cabin. Page's personal favorite song. The melody, tempo, synergy... flawless.
I don’t know how this song has not made it into a film war/battle scene. Every reaction video I’ve looked at on TH-cam for people listening to it for the first time mentioned that it invokes visions of a battle particularly the marriage between the guitars and drums. I’ve decided this is my favorite Zeppelin song
This is actually my favorite Led Zeppelin song ever. Battle of Evermore is another favorite, especially the live version with Najma Akhtar. It is absolutely amazing.
The Ocean is a great song. So glad you appreciate the music a lot of us have been enjoying since it was first released. All these years later, I still enjoy it as much as I did as a kid.
Getting my comment in before TH-cam notices this video. This is my favorite Zeppelin song. I used to play drums back in the day and my drum teacher played this for me and said he wanted me to learn to play it. I looked at his kit that only had ONE bass drum and pedal. I was convinced this was done with a double bass. My teacher informed me it was done with one foot on one bass drum with one pedal. This ended up becoming my all time favorite groove to play and truly made me appreciate fancy foot work in non-double bass drum songs because it's harder than it looks and you basically have to train your brain and foot to be on autopilot or else it ain't happening.
“The Rover” and “Wonton Song” are similar vibes. And two of my favs. And almost no one has reacted to these two. Not sure if anyone has done The Rover. Can’t understand it. Love the channel, hope you get to these two. Peace
Been on the zep train for 50 plus years ! Glad you recently got on board ! The ride will go forever, destination unknown but you’ll enjoy every minute of it ! Try trampled under foot ! The live version from 74 or 75 I believe.
I remember buying this album and listening to this song over and over and to this day, I cannot just listen to it just one time lol. Great reaction T!🤘🏼
“ JP Jones played two completely different bass parts. There is an 8-string bass in there if you listen carefully. Another contributing factor to this great song was the Swedish pop group Abba allowed Zeppelin to use their state-of-the-art recording studio in Sweden...so Jimmy page really was able to get very creative in multitracking guitars skillfully.”
Great song from an underappreciated album. Another great song from Presence and my favorite Led Zeppelin song is For Your Life. A wonderful hard and bluesy song.
I love led zeppelin. To me their first 2 albums are best. Not their only good ones, just their best. Some of my faves are ramble on, thank you, going to California, your time is gonna come, over the hills and far away. STP did a great cover of dancing days that's worth hearing too.
They did this live...excellent! Also No Quarter from MSG! Remastered just means they cleaned up the noise from old recordings back in the day! By the way Jimmy both originally produced all the albums and did all the remasters!!
1976 ...I was a Sr in High School. Bought this album and wore it out. Had to buy it again. This,Candy store rock and nobody's fault but mine were my favs
Thank you so much for "uplifting" this great song. An honest reaction from the heart. It's the best I've heard from Zeppelin and John Bonham is the coolest drummer that ever walked on this earh. 😎
Favorite LZ song here. I’m 26 and my dad exposed me to Zeppelin when I was like 5 so I grew up on the entire discography. What I appreciate about your channel is how you’re coming at this as an adult and describing the nuance to the music with your virgin ears
Iron Maiden built their entire career from John Paul Jones's bass line to this song. And think how many bands built their careers off Iron Maiden's. Influential stuff!

If you would like i suggest Kashmir by Led Zeppelin
Sails of charon - Scorpions
Gallows Pole, Battle of Evermore or the Kennedy Center Honors performance of Stairway to Heaven by Heart with the 3 surviving members of Zeppelin in the audience and John Bonham's son playing drums. No Quarter live from MSG!!
I’m in the minority here, but this is my favorite Led Zeppelin’s song.
Don't think you're in the minority. Many zep fans rate this as their best.
@@samgamblewhite8600 To many good stuff to have a favorite but yeah I agree!
Houses of the Holy off of Physical Graffiti. I had that album also
This is without a doubt the most musically challenging song in their repertoire, though almost every other recording is just as 'good' if not as complex.
In the top 5 for sure!
My opinion: the best song in rock history. The intensity, the rhythm, the lyrics, bass, drums, lead guitar. It is all at a fever pitch throughout the song. What a masterpiece. A symphony of greatness.
No Quarter is another hidden gem. JPJ is magical.
Oh man if theres any song you guys should do it is absolutely the 1973 live version of “No Quarter”. Absolute masterpiece
JP 11 Got to second that. No Quarter live from The Song Remains the Same is totally EPIC.
excellent request my friend
I love the medieval feel of this song and Jones use of the bass pedals on the organ it just rocks !
@@jp1170 No the live version
I love the attention LZ is getting again. They've been a source of joy to me for 50 years now. SImply the best.
This is the greatest drumming performance in Rock music. No one can get close to Bonham here.
Check out Tool Pneumia
I agree brother, there is none like this. Its explosive omg.
every time I hear this song I ask myself: what if there were already double bass kick pedals?
Jesus ... I would already be deaf!
It's like a drummer sprint.
The most underrated Zeppelin song in the entire catalog.
JPJ to me is the heart of the band, and this song really showcases it. He always steps back for the light to shine on Robert, Bonzo or Jimmy, but he's the one in back holding everything down.
These four in other bands. Can't imagine
To think he was just a session musician at first.
This is Zep doing prog rock. Plant has said that in his opinion the musicianship of Page, JPJ and Bonham in this piece is the best in rock. It was a challenge for him to find the lyrics to fit such a complex and huge composition I think he succeeded though, yes? Difficulty in covering this track you best have the guitar skills to play with Emotions ! I met Jimmy it blew my mind

Not that common in the States. Family from Scotland. Perhaps we’re veeeery distantly related...going back a couple hundred years.😉
Oh, he succeeded alright.
This is not prog rock. It's so much more than that.
When they recorded this, they recorded the basic track with Page only playing the rhythm track, and the rest of the band thought Page was a little nuts and didn't have much faith in the song. Gregg Pangle without a doubt.

Very interesting. Where did you read / hear that stuff about the rhythm track ? I´m not doubting you, just never heard it before.
Love the information on the recording 👍👍
Right on Bonham. When band started he was 19-20, and his drumming grew exponentially as he matured. Simply the best drummer ever.
That drum fill at 3:38 is one of the all time great ones imo, so simple but so incredible
John Bonham is giving a master class on drums in this song. Dude is putting in work from start to finish. It should also be noted that Robert Plant recorded his vocals for this album from a wheel chair due to a car accident he suffered in Greece prior to recording the album.
Nobody talks about John Paul Jones enough, in my opinion.
Nope , they don’t and him and bonham give Zep their rhythm
The Adventures of TNT He's so phenomenal, really. They all are, that's why there was such a perfect band.
what? He is only the pope too !
As a bassist I'd say it's always that way with bassists, but JPJ is one of the most dynamic bassists, a great writer plays the tunes the way they should be never over-doing it note wise. as a B player - JPJ is my HERO. no contest. next is cliff burton. Flea and Verdine White (earth wind fire)
Glad to meet another Zeppelin fan. Rock on.

Thomas Bianchino that’s a great album. A lot of reactors never do any songs from it.
This is Page's guitar opus, plain and simple. Top 10 Zeppelin track, no doubt about it. Amazing.
It's so awesome to see reactions to Zepp for those who don't know
If you listen carefully you can hear multiple heavy metal careers being birthed right here.
Pretty much all of them.
Barracuda by heart. Tell me those two don't sound alike by at least a little bit.
@@Mxulin... Spot on. I hadn´t made the connection before, but now that you mention it, it´s as clear as a bell.

Every time a new Zeppelin album was released, it was a celebration. All day and all night!
This song is like Iron Maiden's whole career in 10.5 minutes.
@H Kay Iron is like Led ... hehe
Iron Zeppelin?
Only the bass is constant throughout.
John Bonham worked his ass off for 10 minutes with that triple bass! Just amazing!!!
Man, there’s nothing better than having a good buddy to ride around with playing this loud as it will go and you look at each other and just smile!
Bonham's "Thunder of the Gods" right here.
Great Zeppelin album. For Your Life is another great track and another interpretation of the blues at this late state of their creative development.
This record was a huge change in style and production, and this song is a drumming Tour De Force.
This album has an AWESOME KICK ASS blues number called "Nobody's Fault But Mine". If you haven't reacted to this one yet, you really need to.
This is the zep album neither me or my friends wanted to hear back in the day. Then I heard Nobody's Fault But Mine while on some sweet bud.

Incredible
@@TheAdventuresofTNT especially when one considers that they had no completed songs, just whatever riffs Page had on tape when he got the studio.
