A lot of Zeon-esque Titans suits ended up in Neo Zeon, and stopped being used by the Federation after the Titans were disbanded though. The Marasai comes to mind for one.
So. Your first reaction is "what the hell?" Well.... the humanoid robot part is zeta weirdness. But the space ship part is due to UC lore stuff. In UC, even the space ships often have arms. Why? Because that is the entire justification for humanoid suits in the first place. It is AMBAC. Basically, the ships swing the arms around like acrobats so they can do turns without wasting fuel. it is a technique used by real life astronauts. So, when you ahve flailing arms on the ship, you might as well put guns on them. And hey- 4 'arms' are better than 2 for precise turning, right? And since this might need landing gear, you might as well make two of those into legs. BAM! Mobile suit made. Then, in zeta, they decided '6 is better than 4, right? Give them stupid wings'.
The real-life equivalent is a device called a reaction wheel - they are commonly used on satellites and spacecraft. One of the downsides to them is every time you use a reaction wheel to change the craft's rate of rotation, you have to change the rate of the reaction wheel's rotation - essentially you transfer the unwanted angular momentum to the wheel. So as you do more maneuvers, you wind up with the wheel having non-zero momentum (i.e. you have to keep it spinning, or the craft will start rotating again) - and the rate of the wheel can go up and up as you use if more - until you get to the point where you have to expend some propellant to cancel out the wheel's accumulated momentum. So you could imagine this on a mobile suit - it's tumbling through space, head-over-heels, and the pilot wants to stop the rotation before he throws up - so he starts spinning the arms around, like the robot is swimming. And until he expends propellant to negate the momentum, he just has to keep those arms spinning...
