Few things I forgot to mention.
The flash was used in a pretty low setting ( M 1/128), about 6 ft from a model. The timing is very important, as you don't want it to get too dark outside. I shot right after sunset for about 20 min until it got too dark.
I used just a grocery plastic bag to protect my Sony from the snow haha( it worked )
This technique is very similar to my usual style, it's just backlit with a flash instead of sunset sun. I really really love the result, should I do more shoots like this?

I know - a year late! But Irene, I honestly think this is some of your best work. Simple in many ways, but such great conditions, great use of the backlight. Overall just a very smart and effective shoot. Well done - thanks for sharing! I do "lunch & learn" presentations at a university and I've been asked to do one on winter photography. Such a broad and interesting topic with so many things to consider. FYI - I will be directing people to this video when I do that session, so I hope the attendees will come see your great job with this. Cheers from Halifax NS.

👍👍👍Wow! You inspired me for sure! It's hard to go from extreme dark to light without going to a somber mood. In fact how to do this is so hard, I've been beating my brains on how to present the beauty of dark and light and capturing a heart warming theme. I have always loved the light and dark contrast but not all the themes that go with it. You gave me a million ideas instantly. Hope I can do it 1/10th as well as you have. Now I'm dreaming of a white Christmas thank you.
I like the Godox system too, the V1 and AD200 are really portable & work well.

Most likely a snow machine would work but wouldn’t have the scenery with the snow topped evergreen trees. ☹️
I would really want that in my photo shoot. I’m from the country in Indiana, I do miss those snow capped pine trees in the winter.
A subtle element of the backlighting is how you angled the gel on the flash so the orange colouring doesn't pollute the white snow at her feet but warms the lighting on the model. Nice.
Don't really understand why you did any frames of the model with her glasses on - which were only going to reflect weird highlights and get speckled with moisture from the snow - but your final styling decisions were absolutely spot on. Maybe these were just test shots to fine tune things?
A good, thoroughly professional shoot with excellent attention to detail. Really enjoyed this video and the final image.

When I think of ambient light photographers that are great at what they do I always think of you!
I am the complete opposite. I shoot flash, and lots of it. Every time I try to shoot ambient it’s almost always a failure, and I’m not happy with the results.
Dragging flash around for my high school seniors and shooting BTS videos for my youtube channel is a bit of a pain. But, it is who I am as a photographer.
When I have the opportunity to shoot both ambient and flash I do, just to get better. It is so much more difficult to shoot ambient in my opinion.

Great video Irene, after sunset it is called the blue hour because the sky will have color in the sky until the sky becomes black.
Yes, you did a great job so please do more shots like this.
DIY grocery bag for your gear seemed to work great also. Just be careful using on the flash because higher power on the flash could melt the plastic.
Instead of using a reflector I recommend using another flash off-camera just to brighten up the models face even a Speedlight would work.
Another trick to make the second flash to be soft is to aim the flash, back at the reflector to create a large light source or use a softbox.
