    It has been a game changer for me. Spent years having cortisone injections in my hip. It stopped working and my rheumatologist referred me to a Physiatrist for an injection. It is the best money I have ever spent.

      @@TalkingWithDocs hey docs. I’ve had 2 shoulder surgeons tell me my shoulder is shot and needs replacement. It’s bone on bone. Always in pain but I’m a competitive athlete. Is it worth it to ask about PRP or have you heard of athlete having the shoulder replacement and being able to get back to sport?

      Hey Doc’s.. love your channel. I’m 68 now, from Ontario & have arthritis in 2 knees & 1 shoulder so far. My surgeon tells me that I’ll get a left replacement first but it’s “not bad enough yet”. 1 of the downsides of socialized medicine possibly.
      However, PRP has done good things for me. First 1 was in 2020 & I started to feel healing effects within 8 weeks. Had it again.. new surgeon ( other guy retired) he has a +80% success rate & while this one took longer for me to feel relief.. relief did arrive again, but at a cost of $950. I’m retired, but I can claim this through my HCSA, but I typically use all of that anyway so this cost realistically not covered… but still worth it.
      I think all the surgeons offering this need to start doing this identically.. it’s the only way you’ll develop a robust enough study.

    I've been an auto mechanic for over 50 years, PRP has been very good for me, at 56 I was told I need a right knee replacement (now 68) so I decided to try PRP, it took about 4-6 weeks to feel a difference and it definitely helped, it lasted for about 2½ years and I needed another treatment if I wanted to continue bowl senior tournaments otherwise I probably could have gone longer, so far I have had 5 injections of PRP in my knee in 12 years, also I had a torn bicep in my right arm, PRP took care of that, unfortunately it did not help my low back when I was in pain and had to have an epidural (unsuccessful) so I elected for the McGill method which is working great. Now torn labrum in left shoulder going to P/T then more PRP. hoping for the best!
    Thank you for the PRP video

    I’ve had Prolotherapy and PRP for sports injuries from Caring Medical in Chicago and Lakeside Pain clinic in Minneapolis. Conditions: Gilmores groin, rotator cuff, and knee injury. It was a game changer. The sport medicine doctor discussed a public mesh because my pubic bone was so loose it shifted causing groin pain. I could not skate, cross the midline of my body, or even hold a plank. Three Prolotherapy injections and I was back playing hockey. It also did wonders for my knee and shoulder. My buddy chose cortizone injections; I went prolo. His shoulder is not seriously messed up, mine is pain free. The problem with medical research is it’s funded a lot by pharmaceutical companies and there is no money for them to make in this area. FYI- I’m a Canadian and have flew to Chicago for treatments. I now drive to Minneapolis for Prolotherapy. It worked for me and thousands who receive this treatment.

      Hi Mike. Glad to hear it worked for you. There is a lot of money to be made from prolotherapy. We are confident that your injection wasn’t free. Some people it helps. Lots of people it doesn’t. That’s why we say the risk is financial. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing

      @runnn3107 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Amen! I’ve been to Caring Medical in IL as well, but they no longer have a office there… Ft. Meyers, FL now. I’ve had Prolo, PRP and Stem from CM in several different parts of my body, and it really helped me recover and move-on. Stem is the most expensive, but will hopefully be the WAVE of the future in terms of regenerating cartilage, etc. Old Wisdom what to get 2-3 PRP injections over a 6-8 week period, but now the wisdom is to have 3 injections one week apart… current research indicates very positive outcomes when this protocol is adopted.
      Prolotherapy w/PRP(separate needles and injections, mind you) is great for instability, meaning Prolotherapy has a strong inflammatory reaction which assists with strengthening and stability for surrounding ligaments and tendons. Long before PRP or Prolo where a “thing” I had numerous Cortisone shots when I had the same types of injuries that I’ve since treated with PRP and/or Prolo. The only time I would avoid PRP or Prolo is when you have no cartilage or severe grade osteoarthritis, just because said treatments are for healing/strengthening and not regeneration. The future is Stem, and hopefully I’ll be around to not only benefit, but to see it flourish, and to see the western medical establishment be proven wrong.

    Thank you for your honesty on this subject. I’ve had a few orthopedic specialist just dismiss PRP when I asked about it. My personal experience with PRP is in conjunction with “visco” injections. the combined gel and PRP procedures have provided enough pain relief to allow me to increase my range of motion, decrease pain, and put off total knee replacement until I’m closer to retirement.

    My first PRP injections were 18 years ago. It was cutting edge medicine in those days & had both knees done. I was experiencing severe swelling after only hiking for one hour. The pain was so debilitating that I would be grounded for 3 or 4 days between hikes.
    I had othoscopic surgery and was told that I was a prime candidate for TKR on both knees. Being quite bow legged I think had a lot to with the situation.
    I had 2 PRP treatments about 6months apart in 2004. The results were quite remarkable. I don't know whether it was the PRP injections or because I started road cycling at that time but within a year I was riding up to 50k's every 2nd day and hiking for an hour or two between cycling days, with no issues. I got back into x/c skiing, and even started skate skiing during our long winter months.
    Three years ago I had more PRP injections while in Cuenca Ecuador, along with a PRP IV treatment while down there.
    I'm 75 years old now, and this suumer completed 18 full days hikes and still ride a lot (Ebike). With the Ebike we sometimes do a 100k lunch ride.
    I still get a little knee pain after hiking on hard surfaces but I'm convinced that between cycling & PRP I've dodged a bullet.
    By the way the cost of PRP injections in Ecuador were close to the cost here in Canada.

I just had a single prp injection (unfortunately only 3.1ml due to the incompetent phlebotomist) and I’m starting Physical therapy in 6 days. I’ve been injured a month with arthritis, bakers cyst, and medial meniscus torn at the horn and body. I can’t even lightly jog nor go down stairs.
      I’m going to definitely incorporate the cycling slowly and increase it than hopefully get back to doing some indoor climbing

    I'm in rural Missouri and PRP isn't covered by Medicare, but it's only $500 for the procedure, and frankly I'd pay that just to be able to climb the steps from my garage to my living room. But, I'm going to have to bridge for this, which makes me reluctant. Another couple of months of pain should be sufficient motivation! Thanks for the update.

      Yes the improvement is partial, short term and supported by poor quality studies. You can try it if you like. The risk is primarily financial and those doing it are making a lot of money. Time will tell and maybe it will work but we are not particularly optimistic. This population is desperate though and want it to work so badly. Not sure what kind of doc you are. How timely! I had my 2nd PRP injection today. Ten years ago I had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in my left knee. The surgery was a breeze and aside form some gross edema, the surgery was successful and pain free. A year ago the pain returned and an MRI showed a tear and some detachment. Two surgeons said they could only remove the meniscus since it wasn't surgically reparable. I had a PRP injection about 11 months ago and the pain resolved. Two months ago the pain returned and after waiting to see if it was transient I went for a second today. The procedure is essentially painless (about the pain of a mosquito bite without the itching) except for the $600 that the insurance folks don't want to hear about. So docs, there's one more dose of anecdotal evidence. Cheers!

      I've had two PRP injections and both times the worked a gem and I recovered quickly. I'm a distance runner. The first was a really bad shin splint (just kept ignoring it and it got worse and worse). After getting a PRP, it healed quickly. The second was recently training for a marathon. I got achilles paratenonitis (late July 2023). I rested it for a month in the hope I'd see an improvement but it persisted, so my sports doctor performed a PRP (late August 2023). A few days later I started training on the bike (1st September 2023) and three weeks after that I started running again. There was no trace of the injury, no hint of aggravation. I have another event coming up in early November 2023, so I've been pushing my training (more than I usually would in these early stages, especially after an injury). So far, so good. I can confidently say the PRP did the job and after two significant injuries and two successful recoveries after a PRP injection, I would highly recommend this to anyone.

    I had PRP treatments for a chronic whiplash injury. The doctor explained it very differently - it wasn’t for pain management, the goal was to recreate or simulate the original injury and target the healing to specific locations. I had three rounds of treatments, 6-8 weeks apart. The first treatment involved 16 injections into various neck and upper back joints. The second and third treatments were 19 injections each. For me, the spike in pain afterward was extremely severe and was worse each time. And in the end, it didn’t work. I’ve had no improvement in my injury. I would definitely not subject myself to PRP again. It’s just not worth it.

Off work for 2 weeks. It didn’t do much for me and I’m still having issues and pain. Range of motion is limited. I finally went to see an orthopedic doctor2 years. I’m 56 and just retired 9 months ago with hopes of countless days on the mtn either snowboarding or mtn biking, but after almost 40 years of both boarding and biking my knees are really feeling the pain. I’ve gone in to see my doc about it and was told that I had some arthritis, torn meniscus and previous damage to the ACL and MCL in a jetski accident. I told her I went to a knee specialist and that he recommended replacement, but she had me do a couple squatting/lunging exercises and stated that if I could do those that easily I didn’t need replacement, so she suggested I speak to the PRP specialist.
    I made an appointment with him and his first comment was that 40% of knee pain is caused by being overweight, which I am but when walking and bending are difficult, so is cardio. My wife bought herself a Peloton which I was excited to use, not only to lose weight but strengthen my mtn biking, but I noticed that at about minute 10 both of my knees aching to the point that I needed to stop and stretch my knees/legs.
    Last year I went up snowboarding only to shut it down early due to massive knee pain, but the pain wasn’t where it typically was (kneecap area), this time is was at the back of my knees and it felt more like the pulling/stretching of ligaments. I barely made it back to my car they were so painful. When I lay on a table my left knee is approximately 3” from touching while the right one is flat.
    Any ideas on my next move, I’ve been exercising and lifting weights, do you recommend Zinc/magnesium supplements ?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry to hear this. So PRP has limited support scientifically. You could consider injections of cortisone or Hyaluronic acid (Monovisc synvisc durolane etc) which may help. If your knee is 3 inches off the ground when flat that is called a flexion contracture and that is due to more advanced arthritis. Some people find an unloaded brace helps. Last resort is total knee. Hope that helps. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing

    I'm 65 y.o. and had a chronic MCL tear that refused to heal as revealed by MRI. Chronic pain spread down the leg from the site. Had a PRP injection. Doc told me specifically before he began that "this will make it hurt a lot more before it gets better - will take about 24 hours". Lidocaine prior to injection made it seem like a piece of cake. Since it was the left knee I was able to drive myself home from the procedure. Things felt great until the lidocaine wore off. He wasn't kidding. The swelling made the knee stiff and by evening it hurt like hell. By the next a.m. the swelling had diminished and by 24 hours after injection it was more or less back to normal - just as he said it would. Now 18 months post injection, the MCL pain has been gone for over a year and activities are back to normal. It's not a magic bullet - it does take some time, **and you may have to do rehab during recovery**. In my case I rode a stationary bike for about 60 mins per day. If one doesn't do the rehab as prescribed, don't blame the procedure - you have to do the work. The cost was about $1,000, but my reasoning was that even if PRP didn't work, it was worth risking $1,000 to attempt avoiding surgery. For me it worked but anecdotally clearly it does not in all circumstances.

So far after three weeks I am seeing some success. I will choose PRP again in a heart beat. No more tears in the eyes level of pain. Before the PRP I would have major pain. Now I can play again. Still get the occasional zinger but nothing like prior to PRP. I also am scheduled to have Carpel Tunnel surgery in the near term. PRP may not be a cure all but I am convinced.

    Hi docs, just chanced upon your chanel and been watching some of your videos related to knees and shoulder injury. Thanks a lot for creating these educational videos.
    Since this video is a year old now, wish to know if you have any new insights or updates on PRP. I have had two PRP injection to both knees about 5 yrs ago, and had a lot of relief of pain symptoms since them and had been back to a lot of normal activities that I couldn't do before. Couple months ago decided to join some friends to play soccer after a gap of over 2o years... and see it as a bad choice hindsight... after thee 5th weekly game, th right knee began feeling a lot of acute symptoms of pain, swelling, limitation in flexion and a recent MRI shows horizontal tears to both menisci; unsure if there are degenerative or acute tears or both. Now considering PRP again, and would be interested in knowing what your latest take in on PRP's efficacy when treating symptoms that are due to repeat injury + degenerative like I think mine is.
    Will be following your channel to see if you decide to take a stab at making another video on this topic.

I have been resting for around 2 months, can definitely try resting longer as I am in no major rush to start playing again. Just trying to avoid the microfracture surgery. Let me know what you guys think and thanks again!

      It may be worth a try but the evidence is pretty weak especially if your lesion is displaced and not fixable. Best of luck

    What about doing both the PRP and the HA injections into the knees?

    I second the genicular nerve ablation video. Hard to find any info on it. Why the hesitancy? What am I missing? I was told it's worth a try, and the risks are extremely low. Now I'm second guessing it...

    Just had a PRP injection, 6ml, 10 days ago in ankle joint (an old fracture of the talus which now has a lesion and movement limiting inflammation). There was a pretty big swelling the first 5-6 days but it feels better at the moment. Shot #2 early Dec and then evaluate how much it helps. Changing the talus bone does not seem to be an option as I’m very active and it apparently would not hold up to that for long.

      The ankle PRP injections are somewhat making a difference (3 injections now) BUT the PRP TMJ injection (done 9 days ago) is a game changer. Wow-best the jaw has been in years. Severe facial trauma with LeFort 1-2 (crushed) in 2008. Jaw was not functioning well and steroid slow release crystals were not working anymore so this was an option before considering replacement. Amazing even after 1 treatment. Wish it was covered by insurance/health plan.

    PRP or stem cells do benefit most people, i have had them done, i highly recommend it. When i had stem cells in the knee i could feel a sensation in the knee for about 3 months. I am pretty sure it was some cartilage regrowth and my knee felt 'tighter' and stronger.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris. Glad it worked for you. The research hasn’t shown much for moderate to advanced arthritis yet but maybe in time. The benefit is likely anti inflammatory in nature rather than actual regrow but hey glad it helped

    I have moderate patella femoral arthritis chondrosis on both knees. I just feel they are not strong as I squat. I’m 54, very active athlete. I’m wondering if PRP could be beneficial regaining the strength as squatting and standing up from the ground. I appreciate any feedback.

    Yes, PRP can absolutely help with OA, in my opinion the only downside is the cost but as I stated in anther comment it helps to have someone experienced doing the injection I had one doc hit the fat pad and it was the most pain I ever had in my life and it lasted 6 months.

    • @TalkingWithDocs

    Great day docs! I have a question. Would you recommend PRP over surgery for a tennis elbow? I have been dealing with it for over a year now. I have done therapy, acupuncture and about 3 to 4 months ago I had that steroid shot . Needless to say it did not work. I actually got hurt at work so I’m dealing with the hole workers comp. the specialist treating me says my only and last option will be surgery. what would you guys recommend? please, if you could suggest something
