Speaking of nostalgia , l have 2 beautiful framed Christmas X stitches that my daughter did in her early 30's ...one for me and one she had done for my mother. She was disabled and died at age 45 before my mom. These are treasures that come out every year along with some cute Xstitch Santa tree ornaments and some beaded ones as well. She was so proud of her accomplishments😊
Before I developed carpal tunnel and tennis elbow, etc.... I was an embroiderer, then a cross-stitcher big time. I have never had relatives or friends who shared my passions or presented me with presents. I love your tree gifts and the fact that you thought they were so special. I'm pooping out a bit these days, at 78y, taking much too long to finish a quilt, though your ideas excite me! Thank you for posting your videos as I love them!
I'm just finally catching up on your videos and I had to pause because I couldn't see the screen through tears of laughter about your "Button Crusted" Christmas trees. I am after all, a 12-yo boy at heart. Thank you for the immense giggles and always lovely ideas!
Thank you, Amy! ❤️ I think we all have a least a little bit of 12-yo boy in us---I sure do, or I otherwise wouldn't have stopped myself with the look of, "uh oh, that really didn't come out right!" 😂 Thanks for watching, btw! I've really enjoyed seeing you get stronger and healthier and somehow still keeping up with your YT channel, Patreon AND your quilting goals! Whew--it's a LOT (and tiring!) But I'm rooting for you!🥰
How prophetic that your broadcast today was Christmas quilts. I spent my entire lunch hour yesterday identifying Christmas quilt patterns to make for my three grandsons for their Christmas gift this year. Great minds thinking alike.
Oh, how I love your grandmother's felt Christmas tree. You know she is delighted in the heavens above knowing how much joy you bring to others with your quilt TH-cam channel. Also, you wanted your own sewing room one day - well, I would say you exceeded that goal! 🧵🪡❤
I made a Christmas tree wall hanging for my daughter 5 ish years ago. Last year, she had just moved and didn't have the energy to put up a tree. So her wall hanging was her Christmas tree. She put presents under the wall hanging....
Good morning Cathy! Having a rough patch here; and loved hearing your ideas, joy & sweet voice as I sipped my morning coffee. You are a ray of sunshine.
Oh Kathleen, I'm so sorry it's a rough go right now! But thank you for your sweet comment---I don't know about ray of sunshine, but I'm glad it brought you some joy! ❤️ Thinking of you this week---I hope you are lifted up in whatever circumstance you find yourself in!
I’m in a no buy July, so I haven’t looked at fabric or patterns. However, I have had friends and acquaintances give me their “this isn’t speaking to me anymore “ fabrics. I have a huge amount of Christmas fabric so I thank you for ideas.
Ohhhh - love that Santa in the Trees pattern AND I loved to listen to you talk about it. Well, actually, I loved all the patterns you highlighted today. I love making Christmas quilts. You’re the best. 🤗
I made a tree wall hanging years ago as a gift for my parents. It is embellished with buttons from my grandmothers collection from the old treadle sewing machine that I inherited from her. It was a great memory for my dad, and my mom still hangs it up every year. 🥰
😂😂 oh my goodness, I’m with you along the trail of the old handmade Christmas ornaments. Love that. Following along in the quilt idea. Yep. Cute, cute. And for some reason the Kaffe fabric for the decorated tree surprised me and I just had to laugh out loud. It’s so perfect! And yes I think the Kaffe tree stands out more if the others are solids. It would make an adorable table runner.
When I do Christmas, it is usually a bold red and green, but I also like things that can be used all winter without being Christmas themed, so I lean towards blue, silver, and white.
Love these ideas! When you brought out the placemat I thought, "Wow! That's a modern take on a snippet of Santa!" Sometimes my visual imagination runs away with me! I love the beaded tree idea! The first wallhanging with the sequins and beads reminded me of the things one of my great-grandmother made. I come from a long line of crafters/makers and she was among the greats! My brothers and I were born across 1958-60, so about the time of your sequined hanging. When we each celebrated our first Christmas, she made a stocking for us. Mine was sky blue sparkling felt with a gold sleigh piled with presents and pulled by reindeer, with lots of "snowflake" sequins. She also made red Christmas table cloths full of sequins, beads and embroidery for every married couple in the family. They were large and fit tables that seated 8-12 people. Eventually with her own and others she inherited, my mother ended up with 4 of those. Now my sister-in-law and brother have them and she uses them to decorate their grandchildren's beds when they come for Christmas. I think it's a lovely way to honor their heritage - the fourth generation to enjoy them! And I too wondered if you had green Millefiori from Kaffe to use for a blinged out tree! What a great idea that is!
@@jennjennedington279 Right? I thought it was brilliant! My sister-in-law is not a crafty person, but she has a real eye for innovating decor. And I'm so glad she's using the tablecloths!
Hi Cathy! Thanks so much for these really thoughtful ideas and inspiration. And for featuring my Christmas projects! I have a cross-stitch pattern I made years ago that is a bit of a Charlie Brown Christmas tree - a bit rustic with a folk-art spin to it. I decorated it with a bunch of buttons taken from my mom's button jar, and I'm fairly certain that button jar has been collecting buttons from generations of women in the family. It's a silly little wall hanging, but I love it!
Michelle, you are so welcome! I love those Christmas quilts you've done and hope lots of people come visit you (and stay) on your channel! ❤️ I can just imagine your "rustic" cross-stitch tree with buttons---I love that!! So many people have memories with button jars from the women in their families---I know I do too!
Thanks for the inspiration to get moving on my 2023 Christmas finish of a Christmas tree wall hanging, I'm making for my daughter in law. It's about 1/4 way finished.
Now I can’t wait for Christmas. You have made my morning fun. I don’t quilt but I enjoy your site. Keep those buttons close. If you make those trees for you girls for Christmas, I bet they will love them. Oh my did I put an idea in your head. Enjoy your day.
I really enjoyed this! All of your ideas are very inspiring. I just inherited three generations of buttons saved by my MIL stash when she passed. My brain is running wild with your ideas. How great it would be to hand them down to the next generation in a fun wall hanging. Side note… I made a table cloth that had embellishments. I sure wish I would have placed them on the opposite side of the hand I use to eat! Thank you for consistently bringing me joy❤❤❤❤❤ I truly do love the way you two add to the community.
Yay, another Christmas project!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Love the cross stitch and the tree quilt ideas. I’ve had a tree quilt cut out and waiting for decades now. Maybe this will be the year! Your placemat idea-adorable! So glad you’re sentimental and have your granny’s felt tree and the adorable cross stitch from your past. I love treasures gathered throughout my life as well. Heartwarming memories that inspire lots of creativity. Can’t wait to see your next Christmas projects unfold. I need to work on Christmas WIPs also. ❤ 🎄 So many projects to fit into our busy lives.
I love how you source your fabric especially the men’s shirts for quilting. I garment sew but I am headed back to quilting so I use my cotton poplin remnants, Ankara remnants and even buy fabric with an eye to garment sew and quilt with to get the most out of my fabric without overbuying. I’m looking forward to doing improv quilted placemats for gifts. Love your channel.
I will get to meet Kaffe and Brandon in October. They are coming to small town Wellington Ks on their American tour and I got a ticket to attend their lecture. I'm so excited! Glad to see you using more Kaffe. I love this idea.
I generaly don't like quilting/sewing videos where there is just talking. However, this one really entertained me and is full of inspiration. Thank you!
That's a great idea using buttons on a tree placemat. I have a jar of white reclaimed buttons waving at me across the room right now. I made a friend who lives in a care home an xmas tree wallhanging last year. He mistook it for a napkin and wore it in the residents' lounge for dinner. Now they all want one!
I love the tree wall hangings, so fun! I was just thinking I have a bunch of pins and broaches I’ve collected over the years. I may do a big tree and use those for ornaments! Now that would be ‘extra’ ha ha! You’re definitely inspiring me! Thank you!
Cathy, your grandmother’s sparkly Christmas tree banner is just perfect! I’ll say the same about your treasured Christmas tree cross stitch … that little tiny tree stand!! Oh my word ❤❤❤ And yes I am watching you thinking that your shirt could go into a Christmas quilt 😂
Love your placemat idea. This isn't the first time we've seen quilted placemats on this channel. I use placemats every day and I could use some new ones!
Thank you for not jettisoning your old ornaments! All of ours have sentimental meanings. The first is a tab of blue wool felt with two plastic pearls glued on it. And a set of metallic colored plastic bells. I made the felt one when I was 2 and the bells my parents bought for the Christmas I’d just turned one. I’ll be 60 this year and I treasure them!
How cool that you gave Michelle a shout out! She makes such wonderful scrappy quilts! I'm currently doing a collaborative quiltalong with her, Brenda from Conquering Mount Scrapmore, and Kelley's Quilts and Cruises, and we're having so much fun working together on it.
Thank you FutureCat! I do think Michelle makes such wonderful quilts---and lucky you, working with her on your collab quilt! It looks like it's going to be so much fun! ❤️
Each year i try to catch ( in the air) what the new colours will be for Christmas. Thanks Cathy for your input along with ideas. You did leave out one source that maybe we older ( read big stash) quilters ought to embrace is sharing and trading fabrics with other quilters! ❤🎄
Definitely love a repeating theme! At our house, I often repeat snowpeople as the theme so I can keep things up longer. Being in Alaska, it's easy to stay in "snow season" for a good long time! Santa is in the Trees is such a great pattern -- glad you highlighted it!
Your tree idea is great. I’m making a tree wall hanging now and have all the fabric and pattern to make a tree quilt. It’s fun to make Christmas extend all year long. Love your chuckle and exuberance! Thanks for all your inspirational videos!
Oh, I do hope you make one of these fabulous Christmas tree ideas. I can’t stop thinking about a snowman covered in buttons. Thank you for so much inspiration.
Hi Cathy, love love loved this video! Christmas in July, just what I needed today! Been struggling as a family for a while, and watching you always cheers me up! Loving all the Christmas crafting ideas. The buttoned placemat is genius! I have tins and tins of buttons some belonging to my grandmother, and this is such a great idea! Will be watching out to see how you got along with it. Keep on laughing, and thanks for sharing as always Greetings from the UK❤️🇬🇧
Apologies for the late reply, Tink! I'm so glad this video cheered you up! For what it's worth, I know lots of families that have been struggling (health, finances, loss, etc.) so you are not alone! Something about sewing and making things with our hands is so uplifting and helpful---I hope you are able to get out your tins of buttons and make something that makes you happy! 😊❤️
Thanks for sharing your wonderful ideas!! I could see blue trees with pearl white buttons for ornaments too. It’s fun when we get to play with fabric! Have a great week❤
That is a lovely Christmas 🎄 hanging. You can easily take the pattern from the cross stitch. Just transfer it onto ten count cross stitch paper with coloured pencils ✏️. Love your ideas.🇨🇦☘️🍁
So glad to see this today! Your channel has not been showing up in my feed. I am a subscriber and have been for a long time. I love the Santa in the trees pattern.
Thank you, Tracy! If you click on the bell, YT will notify you when a new video is published! (and thank you for being a long time subscriber---you guys are the BEST! 😘)
I have this pattern and haven't made it yet. Oh, pick this one. It could be fun. I have so many greens and snowy sky backgrounds to choose from. And then you pull Kaffe ! 😮
I'm a big quilt maker. It seems I just always end up with twin or bigger. Yet I love table runners and wall hangings. I need to really concentrate on making those smaller projects because I love them. Your button placemat is a lovely idea. It might also make a lovely pillow for a couch. Those rectangle pillows seem to be a trend.
I enjoy listening to your detailed thoughts and ideas. Your placemat is certainly original. If it doesn't work out for you maybe turn it into a table runner ... or not. You could use buttons as garland on the tree(s) too. I really like your idea of the white buttons on a snowman, that would be cute.
I love the tree / Santa tree wall hanging idea. I have started making holiday porch quilts to hang on my front porch and this one would be great to make the trees slightly larger and add the red tree or a button and ribbon decorated tree into the mix. Good thing I’m in between projects right now.
Don’t you just love to plan quilts with fabric! I’m working on a panel challenge with my guild & was digging into my scraps to find fabrics that coordinate yesterday! Too fun & so happy to see you thinking about adding some Kaffe again!
Some wonderful ideas Cathy! Those wall hangings you shared are so sweet and lovely! 🎄❤️🫶🏻 I like the placemat idea with the buttons…wondering maybe it might be better to have the tree on the left hand side of the placemat for right handed people so the buttons don’t get in the way….🤷🏻♀️☺️ Either way it’s a fun idea!
There is a cute tree quilt pattern called Bee Plaids Pines Quilt Pattern and a local quilt shop made a sample out of the new Once Upon A Christmas fabric line (Moda) which has quite a bit of pink and it is adorable! I have seen the tree pattern with the one Santa, and it is on my "someday" list. Your Christmas treasures are beautiful! It will be interesting to see which way you go with your Christmas trees.
Fun video. You’re giving me ideas! And I don’t even like Christmas sewing, especially in the heat of summer. The use of buttons in those ways is very clever. The placemat idea is great, tho I might use it as a small table runner instead, just because the thought of wobbly plates bugs me. Or, hey, that idea would make a fun tree skirt! The gerbil wheel’s a’spinning.🤔
Swoon...I love your nanny's Christmas tree wall hanging! I have the tree and Santa pattern on a thinking about it tab...the Santa is kind of Holt Howard Dairy Queen Santa glassesish... I have a FQ bundle of the Riley Blake Twas fabric, that I have squirreled away until I can find the perfect pattern for. We have a vintage aluminum Christmas tree with Shiny Brite ornaments, vintage knee huggers, vintage Annalee's, Rushton Santa's and so on.
Love that Kaffe fabric. I picture Solid Christmas trees or small patterns of all the colors in the Kaffe fabric. Either way, all your ideas are pretty great!! Love the use of buttons. What fun you are having!! Merry Christmas in July! My first quilting project was a Christmas table runner. It comes out every year and it was based on a pattern for placemats which I merged together into an extra long table runner. I am super proud of it even with all the mistakes I made. Especially since I created the pattern based on an image of something I saw in a video long ago. It was what got me into quilting. Another great video as always, kudos to you and the guy behind the camera and the editing!!!
Thank you, Christine! ❤️ Isn't it neat how those early projects end up meaning so much? I just love that about quilting! (well, all crafting. but maybe especially quilting.)😊
I like the idea of placemat, but I can imagine my family using them putting dirty forks on a white tree and splitting spaghetti sauce all over it 😂 . A table runner wuold be a better choice . For the wall hanging have you considered wonky trees ? A great exercise to challange ourselves for us accurate, precise people😊. I've seen them in the You Tube channel Pin cut sew. Elena, Italy
If you do end up making it, you could use a bunch of the buttons you get off of men's shirts as ornaments. I know that I have lots of really pretty ones that I have that came off of shirts
The white buttons look like snow flakes to me....Cardinal, blue background, white snow buttons. But I know that it doesn't snow much where you live...now I need to figure out how to make the cardinal. I will make it as a small wall hanging (for the end of my breakfast bar). But I do love quilting placemats!
I think the white buttons look like snowflakes too--just haven't figured out what pattern to use them in!❤️ You'll have to email me (email in the "about" on my main YT page) or IG me with a photo once your cardinal and snowflakes wall hanging is done!
Love your ideas! I'd be interested in knowing how a placemat would hold up with multiple washings with the buttons. If you make this, let us know how that works out.
Mary, you're welcome to email me at cathy@thecatbirdquilts.com I'm not great at responding to email (if I'm being honest) but I read them all! I'll look forward to seeing your button suggestion! ❤️
You brought me to tears. So special that you have those. God bless
Giselle, that is just the sweetest things. And made me a little weepy, too! ❤️
I just knew you were gonna use a Kaffe fabric for the decorated tree, but what fun to add the buttons for some "bling". Your Nanny would be proud! ❤
Thank you, Giselle! ❤️
Oooh, how about a dark green tree with white buttons as layers of snow on the branches? I love how watching your ideas spark new ideas for me too.
Yes, green tree with white button snowflakes, love that ❤
Before I developed carpal tunnel and tennis elbow, etc....
Whew--it's a LOT (and tiring!) But I'm rooting for you!🥰
The Christmas Tree Farm is most likely an advent calendar. There are 25 blank trees. You could pin a treat to each one leading up to Christmas.
Yes!
How prophetic that your broadcast today was Christmas quilts. I spent my entire lunch hour yesterday identifying Christmas quilt patterns to make for my three grandsons for their Christmas gift this year. Great minds thinking alike.
Took me all day to find time to watch this video. Never disaponts. Thanks, Cathy and Paul!

That is awesome! Good job Mom! ❤
Adorable!
How wonderful! ❤️ We just never know how the projects we make will bless the recipients, do we? 🤩🎄🤓
I like the solid green trees with the one blinged out Kaffe tree and the white bedazzle-buttoned tree placemat. .Happy Quilting and Creating. ❤❤❤
I agree pick colours that are meaningful, I just finished a teal, blue/purple and yellow Christmas quilt. Michelle’s channel is terrific
Using buttons as ornaments on a Christmas tree is brilliant! I would probably make 12 different Christmas trees if i made a wall hanging. 🎉
Good morning Cathy! Having a rough patch here; and loved hearing your ideas, joy & sweet voice as I sipped my morning coffee. You are a ray of sunshine.
Hope things improve for you!😊
❤ thinking of you today❤

A Christmas table runner can be a relatively quick project and lovely to look at on a table not currently being used. Enjoyed this!

Cathy, your grandmother’s sparkly Christmas tree banner is just perfect! I’ll say the same about your treasured Christmas tree cross stitch … that little tiny tree stand!! Oh my word ❤❤❤

WOW! Great quilt ideas! I love the lime and chartreuse greens mixed with red for Christmas! So much fun this video! Sew on Sis!
I love your vintage Christmas decor! I also love your ideas for a new quilt too!
The place mat button trees would be beautiful in candlelight too!
Oooh. I hadn't thought of that, but you're right!
The buttons would make some COOL snowflakes
I agree! And I have had that exact thought!

Also… button-crusted 😂❤ love it!!
That is a lovely Christmas 🎄 hanging. You can easily take the pattern from the cross stitch. Just transfer it onto ten count cross stitch paper with coloured pencils ✏️. Love your ideas.🇨🇦☘️🍁
Thanks for reminding me.... I need to get the new tree skirt quilted so I can use it this year! I love the Kaffe as the blingy tree!
I immediately fell in love with your idea! Oh my goodness you must make this! I love love love❤❤❤
I really like your idea of a wall hanging with the 12 trees. I might try to make one for myself. The place mat with the shirt buttons is cute too.
Ooooh I’m inspired for sure! Thank you!
Thank you❤
I love the tree / Santa tree wall hanging idea.
Charity, that's a good idea (putting the design on the left-hand side!) And thank you! ❤️
Thank you for this lovely Christmas in July themed video (Christmas will be here before we know it!) Love your ideas💕-especially the placemat!
Thanks for the suggestion, Gail! I will check it out! 🤓👍🏻
Your placement idea is great! Seems also a tribute to your grandmother’s wall hanging. 😊
I love the placemat idea! So cool
I like the placemats idea . I have buttons from my Grandma and mother in law. Lots of buttons
Ok, I love all of this comment, and YES Holt Howard Dairy Queen Santa glasses--- you nailed it!❤️
@TheCatBirdQuilts aren't those DQ glasses just the best?!!? I love all the Holt Howard Santa's!
The placemat is so pretty. You could also use the 1/2 tree as a utensil holder too! The buttons are great way to add dimension and texture
(well, all crafting. but maybe especially quilting.)😊
you inspire me!
So many great ideas thank you.
Would LOVE to see these ideas for Hanukka.
I frequent the Salvation Army every Friday or Saturday when clothing is 5/$5. It’s an excellent source for fabric.
That ex-boyfriend mom’s cross stitch is an Advent calendar- hence 25 trees. You could put a pin “ornament” as each day goes by….
You need a fantastic button for the top of that tree for the placemat. A bright colorful button
love thrift shopping just got shirts at a bag sale for 0.28 each it was a happy day
If you do end up making it, you could use a bunch of the buttons you get off of men's shirts as ornaments. I know that I have lots of really pretty ones that I have that came off of shirts
Lol, I really should have finished watching the video before I made the suggestion
😂😂😂 LOL! You're not the first to comment exactly what I get to---since I have so much to say, I should probably warn people, "Wait for it...." 😘
Can we also know the quilt pattern name that is hanging behind you?! I love your ideas!!!
@@verawilson8939 it is a pattern of my own making and doesn’t have a name yet! 😊
@@TheCatBirdQuilts it is GORGEOUS!!! I will be on the lookout for potential pattern coming soon 🥰
Thank you, Vera!! ❤️
I have regret for not buying a used shirt with a red, green and gold it was beautiful. But a bit on the pricey side.😢 should have bought it.
You have to have a pickle ornament. lol ( I do)
The white buttons look like snow flakes to me....Cardinal, blue background, white snow buttons.
I will, Liz! 🤓👍🏻
❤❤❤❤❤
I would do a table runner
Think about tea towels for fabric. Sheets also.
how about using the buttons for snow on the red placemat.
2025 ... Moda is really going PINK in every shade and style ... even Reproduction!
Cathy ~ I watch your show every Friday morning. I have a great idea for the use of your buttons. How can I send you a picture?
Mary, you're welcome to email me at cathy@thecatbirdquilts.com
I'm not great at responding to email (if I'm being honest) but I read them all! I'll look forward to seeing your button suggestion! ❤️
