I am part of a prayer quilt ministry at church and someone gifted us a pair of Guggenhein scissors. They are definitely now our prized possession! They cut through fabric like "butta"!😁. They are definitely going on my wish list this year 😉. Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions!
These are awesome gifts! Thank you for sharing. One of my very favorite tools is my Tailors Clapper. My hubs is a woodworker and made mine for me. It is not only beautiful but being made by him makes it very special.
Great suggestions for gifts. You could watch Pat Sloan every day. I DO watch Pat Sloan every day; at least, every day that she has a video. I never miss your video, either, and only learned that one can join live early in the morning.
It is the Eyelet Lace quilt by Kindred Quilt Co; if you want to see the whole thing, you can see it here: th-cam.com/video/FqKTf5lej9A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lZj1u-yOQDdwO0Bm
Super video, Cathy! You can sharpen seam rippers. Use a small stone or ceramic rod on the cutting area. Yes, you can absolutely make a pin bowl. Hot glue a magnet or two to the bottom. I like your leather protector; great upgrade. This is a great use for that odd, beloved saucer or the last saucer from your grandma’s set, or a pretty dish you find when thrifting. Yes, scissors/shears are not snips. I attach my snips to my machine with a clip attached to a curly cord - like you’d use to attach keys to a belt. Yes, Aurifil thread is simply the best. One tip: I piece with the same thread all the time - medium gray in the needle and beige in the bobbin. (I use two colors so I can see whether my stitch is balanced at a glance.) I buy my Aurifil in the 5,000 meter cones. Yes, the price of a cone makes me pause when I buy one, but they last for a l-o-n-g time. If you buy the cones, Aurifil thread is no more per yard than cheap thread from the big box store! You do need a thread cone stand if you use cone thread on most machines. The ones with the cast iron bases aren’t expensive and they’re heavy enough to keep your cone upright.
I bought an order number holder from a restaurant supply store. It works great for my Aurifil cone and was a lot cheaper too. I tried using an old coffee mug tree of my grandmother’s. It didn’t work for that but is a great option for my scissors and rotary cutters.
Every time I use my Guggenheim scissors I smile, seriously amazing! Best scissors I’ve ever used, hands down. I like how they sound too! Ha ha! I need to let my hubby know, I’d love some thread for Christmas. Great list, thank you! I’m all about ‘beautiful and useful’.💕⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I wait until I’m alone to watch your videos as you always have me laughing out loud. Your kind encouragement and humor are truly gifts from God that bless us all!
I have had gingher scissors foe over 20 years and loved them. When I saw that Guggenheim is associated with gingher. I knew I had to have them, Early Christmas present for me - and at half price!!!
Great tips!! Like myself, for people who would appreciate rulers that are totally not slippery I LOVE Spin About. They are available on Amazon. They dramatically changed my quilting experience. I too am a fan of Pat Sloan. For those unfamiliar with her TH-cam channel she is currently on Tuesdays through Thursdays. Thanks Cathy, you are delightful!😊
Good ideas and well curated ! We all have bought things when new quilters that we dont use but its a learning curve. Ive been very ill for about 6 weeks and just getting my sew-jo back. The past few years have been very challenging physically for me and seemingly my new normal😮.The one thing that l always look forward to is getting back to sewing.l just sewed a pair of flannel pajama pants for my daughter's boyfriend as a Christmas gift as l had been meaning to do siince last year 😂 What a challenge this was as l hadnt sewn a clothing item for some time!!!!! It seems that my brain and that pattern along with inseam pockets just didn't jive ...put my big-girl pants on and got 'er done😊 HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all your family and l'm thankful for all your videos and warm responses to my comments.
The snips are fabulous because you can snip a thread without getting your fingers into the scissor handle holes. So they are a snap to pick up and put down one-handed.
Helpful tip if you aren’t used to using shears…use a microfiber cloth to wipe down the blades ever so often, otherwise they start catching. Breaking down shirts is so much easier with these shears. Love your videos, Cathy! You turned me into a thrift store shirt quilter!
I have lots of hair. I keep one of the lint rollers with tape in my bathroom. After I dry my hair, I use it to get the hair off of the back of my shirt. It’s great for that!
Girl, take those shears to your local guy who Shar p ens knives...and scissors. Now, generally speaking, it's been the locksmith that sharpens scissors. There. Now you have a pair for your darling daughter. How great is that!
Hi Cathy, Thanks so much for the video on gifts for quilters or treats for myself. My quilters club Christmas party is only 2 weeks away and I appreciate help with my dilemma of what to buy. Also, the little additions to the video (music, close-ups) make it fun to watch.
I purchased the Guggenhein scissors last month after hearing so many of the garment sewers I watch on YT recommend them - LOVE THEM! Quality scissors. Pat Sloan was the first quilter I took an in-person class with waaaay back in the early '90s, she was just getting known around that time for her primitive style applique, she is a lovely person. I don't have the Tula Pink snips but I do have a pair of her 4" Micro Tip Scissors - great for cutting into tight corners etc. Thanks for another swell video, Happy Thanksgiving to you and fam next week.
Enjoyed the suggestions. I always enjoy looking at the quilts hanging behind you and try to figure out the pattern. I was really intrigued by this one. Thanks for sharing.
It's the Eyelet Lace Quilt by Kindred Quilt Company. I did a completely different colorway and arrangement but I love the pattern just as she designed it, too. ❤️ And thank you!
I have a catch on my Guggenhein scissors. As soon as I finish watching, I will email them. I was going to send them to be sharpened. Yes. Shout out to Pat Sloan. 🙌🏼 But hey, you are a delight to listen to and your content feeds my quilty soul. Happy thanksgiving.
I have been gradually replacing my existing rulers with the Creative Grids versions, that’s how much I love them. The feel, the frosted grips on the bottom, the markings, the on-the-ruler instructions - just the best! My latest fave is the flying geese trimmer, but I love the Stripology ruler, too. I also want to mention that Aurifil really has their spool game down. Something about those orange 50wt spools, either the way the thread is wound or the design of the spool - makes the sewing easier. I bought a knock-off on Amazon, and the color choices and price were amazing, but the spools’ inner diameter was just a hair too wide, and the sewing became more choppy and less consistent. Now a lifetime supply of bobbin thread, I guess. Confession: I splurged on an Aurifil collection of variegated thread😍which I’ve only used a couple of times for quilting, but the serotonin boost when opening THAT box is pretty big! Good choices for this list, Cathy. I may “need” those snips…
Just bought the G scissors and their snips... also 50% off ...my current snips are actually a very sharp, very short bladed but pointed outdoor lawn and garden find .. love them so much i bought a second pair
Good morning Cathy, such a great video and all the best quilter necessities! I have several of these and totally agree. Hope you have a wonderful weekend and Thanksgiving! 🥰🥰🥰
I just ordered the scissors and also got the little giant precision scissors. Thanks for the recommendation! Will look for the lint roller 0:06 when I’m out shopping. The ones I use just don’t last but a few swipes.
Whoo-ho, live your videos, wake up with them most Fridays. Thinking hard on the Gugenheim scissor and thread....Thread first since I'm down low, heard the same thing about Dove Gray. Thanks fir a great video...again you two are great together, love Paul's insets throughout the videos
Thank you, Chris! ❤️ Funny about thread...it seems like it doesn't matter, but then using great thread really enhances the whole quilting experience. And thank you about Paul (and me); he is the BEST and we really enjoy working together on the YT videos!
I'm here to testify to the joy of the Clover leather thimble 😂 I have hated thimbles all my life, until I found the ONE PERFECT thimble. I too, forget that it's on my finger, it is that comfortable!
Another lovely video, but I always miss when you go live - because, well sleep! Now if you went live about 3am you might catch more of us of a certain age. Lol - JK. Thanks for all the great gift ideas - perfect time of year to talk about gifting for your favorite quilter! ❤
Ordered the scissors. Can’t wait till they get here. On another note, your linen Comfort quilt, how many shirts do you think it took? I’m in the process of collecting the shirts and I’m wondering how many I might need. Also, after you starch them and leave them to dry, do you iron them before cutting the pieces? Also, if you would like the cuffs, collars, yokes and leftover pieces of the linens and linen/cottons I have leftover after making my quilt, I would be happy to send them to you.
You're gonna LOVE the scissors! As for the linen Comfort quilt, I probably used the backs or 2 fronts (and the occasional sleeve) of 7-10 shirts. I didn't count, and I used some other clothes too (pants, shorts, etc) but I know there were 10 total colors in the final quilt. I didn't use a "whole" shirt for any of the blocks, so you could get away with less, I'm sure! And thank you for the offer of the cuffs, collars and yokes...I don't need them at this time, but that is generous of you!❤️
There’s a seam ripper called Seam Fix with two ends, two sizes, with rubbery caps that look like the Michelin man that pulls the ripped threads from the seam, similarly to how an eraser is used.
As always, a great video with loads of ideas. Is that thread stand (that you showcased Aurifil threads on) also available? That would be handy to have next to the machine
LOL love all your tools, and have some on my to get list, lol I do have the #2600 Dove grey Aurifil thread, can't say I have used it yet, haha it's too pretty to use, but I will try to be brave an tear off the wrapper soon, maybe in 2025!!
I just went online to check out the guggenhein scissors and saw that they are made for right handed people and, at this time, they don't have scissors for us left-handers.
I love Karen Kay Buckley scissors, all sizes. They are designed for left or right handed people. I’m both left and right handed when using scissors. They are fabulous for cutting through everything…fabric, felt, leather, etc.
Do you save all the buttons from the shirts that you use? Buttons are stupidly expensive nowadays. I could see you putting them in small bags and selling them on e bay.

My sweet husband gifted me the scissors for my birthday last year. The very best ever, worth every dime.
Agree 100%!
I am part of a prayer quilt ministry at church and someone gifted us a pair of Guggenhein scissors. They are definitely now our prized possession! They cut through fabric like "butta"!😁. They are definitely going on my wish list this year 😉. Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions!
I have a pair of Guggenhein shears, as well as a pair of their scissors. I LOVE them!
You're welcome! I hope Santa fulfills your wish list this year! 😘
These are awesome gifts! Thank you for sharing. One of my very favorite tools is my Tailors Clapper. My hubs is a woodworker and made mine for me. It is not only beautiful but being made by him makes it very special.
Mine made a seam ripper with a large wooden handle for my arthritic hands.❤
My husband is also a woodworker and made me two of these, a regular size one and a smaller one for smaller piecing.
I’m left handed and found the Creative Grids square rulers with markings for left handers. It is a life changer. I have 2 sizes!
That's wonderful! CG for the win for lefties! ❤️
Great suggestions for gifts. You could watch Pat Sloan every day. I DO watch Pat Sloan every day; at least, every day that she has a video. I never miss your video, either, and only learned that one can join live early in the morning.
What is the name of the quilt in the wall behind you? I love that pattern. Can you share a pic of the whole quilt? I love your color placement.
I believe it's called eyelet lace but I could be wrong!
It is the Eyelet Lace quilt by Kindred Quilt Co; if you want to see the whole thing, you can see it here: th-cam.com/video/FqKTf5lej9A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lZj1u-yOQDdwO0Bm

Thank you, Angie! There's really something to that "beautiful and useful" thing, I think. And why am I not surprised that you are all about it, too?
I wait until I’m alone to watch your videos as you always have me laughing out loud. Your kind encouragement and humor are truly gifts from God that bless us all!
Aww! Thank you so much, Wende!❤️

I love my Guggenhein scissors!
Me too!!
HA, I remember those old red lint brushes. It's all we had at the time and thought they worked great!
And honestly, they do! Just not on my couch! 😂😘
Helpful tip if you aren’t used to using shears…use a microfiber cloth to wipe down the blades ever so often, otherwise they start catching. Breaking down shirts is so much easier with these shears. Love your videos, Cathy! You turned me into a thrift store shirt quilter!
Thank you for the suggestion, Stephanie! I will start doing that right away! And YAY...thrift store shirt quilting is the BEST! ❤️
thank you so much Cathy!
2 of my favorite quilters! Pat & Cathy!
Thank you, Pat! What a delight to see your name in the comments! ❤️
I have lots of hair. I keep one of the lint rollers with tape in my bathroom. After I dry my hair, I use it to get the hair off of the back of my shirt. It’s great for that!

The creative grid 6.5 ruler is my go-to ruler, love, love, love it. It and the 2.5 x 18 creative grid ruler are my two most used rulers. ❤
So many great tools! My favorites items are similar (but different specifics - thimble tape for my win!) This is an excellent list.
I've been meaning to try thimble tape...now I have to try it on your recommendation!❤️
I just love watching your YT videos.
I think they are a wonderful tool!
I'd love everything on this list.
Thank you, Diane! ❤️
Great ideas Cathy. Happy they don’t break the bank! XOX

Thank you - great and practical suggestions !!
This video was extremely helpful. Thank you so much!
Thanks, Teresa! And you're welcome! ❤️
I have those Tula Snips .... they are the very best! All of Tula's scissors are the very best ... my set is 5 years old and they are still very sharp.
I purchased the Guggenhein scissors last month after hearing so many of the garment sewers I watch on YT recommend them - LOVE THEM! Quality scissors. She SEEMS like a lovely person, so I'm glad that she is the same in person! Thank you so much and Happy Thanksgiving to you, too! ❤️
I prefer using bias binding, and I must say that the Bias Binding Simplified Ruler is wonderful.
I ordered the Guggenheim because you previously recommended the spring loaded scissors that I love for a long day of cutting shirts.
I still love those spring-loaded scissors! ❤️ You're gonna love the Guggenhein ones!
Enjoyed the suggestions. I always enjoy looking at the quilts hanging behind you and try to figure out the pattern. I was really intrigued by this one. Thanks for sharing.

So many wonderful items Cathy!! 👏🏻 Thanks for the tips! 🥰
Those scissors sound amazing!! I am definitely suggesting those 😉🫶🏻

Cassandra, I agree wholeheartedly with you on all points. ESPECIALLY that you "need" the snips! 😘
Get a stitch in the ditch foot. I'm curious if that will make next year's favorite things list. 😉
I need to do that!!
Love Aurifil threads!
So helpful Cathy! I use my lint rollers on my cutting mats, works great. I would love a pair of the shears...maybe Santa will bring me a pair.
Thank you, Stacie! ❤️ I think you need to let Santa know right away since they are on sale now!!
Do you have a resource for the wooden thread holder? Great video

Here's the link to the exact one I have:

Great video Cathy!
Looooove CG rulers! And those shears are the best I've ever used, they are so good!
SO. GOOD! ❤️
I love my really good scissors and that satisfying scissor sound!
Satisfying is DEFINITELY the word for it! ❤️
Purchased the shears with discount! Thanks so much. They have been on my bucket list.
Oh yay, Carol! ❤️ PS, got your email...LOVE your quilt and I'll get back to you via email soon(ish!) 😉
I was curious about the Guggenhein scissors . . . They were 50% OFF!!!!! Yes Please!!! 😮
Right? What perfect timing---and we didn't even plan it!😘
Just bought the G scissors and their snips... also 50% off ...my current snips are actually a very sharp, very short bladed but pointed outdoor lawn and garden find .. love them so much i bought a second pair
Hooray for 50% off! And great snips...no matter where they come from! 🤩
Good morning Cathy, such a great video and all the best quilter necessities! I have several of these and totally agree. Hope you have a wonderful weekend and Thanksgiving! 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you, Debbie! ❤️
Just ordered the shears- I’ve been wanting them and didn’t know about the sale! Caught it just in time. Tfs!
You're so welcome! Perfect timing, right? (and we didn't even plan it!) ❤️
I just ordered the scissors and also got the little giant precision scissors. Thanks for the recommendation! Will look for the lint roller 0:06 when I’m out shopping. The ones I use just don’t last but a few swipes.
I hope you like the lint roller as much as I do...I felt like I would run through mine so quickly, but it has lasted far longer than I expected!
Ready set . . . how many pairs of scissors do you have? Go!!!! 😄
Re rulers: You might consider Quilter’s Select. The entire bottom side is coated-they do not move. I switched to these. Love them!
Lynne, thank you for the recommendation! Next time I need a new sized ruler, I will try them out! 🤓❤️

It is 0% weird that a pharmacist loves a ruler 🥰
😂 Good point...hadn't thought of that! ❤️
I'm here to testify to the joy of the Clover leather thimble 😂 I have hated thimbles all my life, until I found the ONE PERFECT thimble. I too, forget that it's on my finger, it is that comfortable!
#greatminds #kindredspirits ❤️ (ps the yellow fabric in the knitted star block didn't make the cut...just not enough contrast! 😘)
Fiskars handles their warranties for all of their products including cutting mats and rulers the same way..Great Company !!
Joan, I didn't know that about Fiskars! (love them too...my spring-loaded scissors are fantastic!)
Harbour Freight Tools has magnetic bowls. I found them on sale for $1.99 a couple of weeks ago!
Oh cool! Thanks for letting me know...I love Harbour Freight Tools...and $1.99 is a STEAL! ❤️
Fun!!! Great ideas, too! Side note: i went to the Guggenhein website & the 8" taylor shears were half off!
How wonderful!! 🤩
Another lovely video, but I always miss when you go live - because, well sleep! Now if you went live about 3am you might catch more of us of a certain age. Lol - JK. Thanks for all the great gift ideas - perfect time of year to talk about gifting for your favorite quilter! ❤
Thank you, Peg! ❤️ 3am? No thank you, ma'am!!
Completely off topic but your hair looks so good! Love it 😍
Aww! Thank you, Barbara! ❤️ (I needed that boost as I haven't been loving my hair lately! 😘)

Thanks, Cherie! ❤️ Here's the link for the spool hoolder: rnrwoodworksky.com/shop/ols/products/black-walnut-spool-holder
Try the Scotch Brite PET EXTRA STICKY with purple label. Far superior to the Everyday Clean red label product. You will be amazed.
I will try it! Thanks for the recommendation! 🤓❤️
I may or may not have gotten myself the 4 pack of neutral Aurifil colors at the Houston Quilt Show this year. 😎
...because it's genius! Aurifil packaging/marketing/thread for the win!
As always, a great video with loads of ideas. Is that thread stand (that you showcased Aurifil threads on) also available? That would be handy to have next to the machine
Thank you, Beth! ❤️ Here's the link to the spool holder:

Time to tear off the wrapper and use it---I love that it's beautiful, but it's even better to let it be USEFUL too! ❤️
I just went online to check out the guggenhein scissors and saw that they are made for right handed people and, at this time, they don't have scissors for us left-handers.

Do you save all the buttons from the shirts that you use? Buttons are stupidly expensive nowadays. I could see you putting them in small bags and selling them on e bay.
I do save them...it just seems such a waste to throw them away! But I'll have to be retired before I make the time to sort and sell them! 😘
You just need to take your scissor to a reputable scissor sharpener.
Buy from your local shop, money stays in the community. Mr Bezos is rich enough.

Creative grid rulers aren’t really that good people need to try out quilters select or Marelli rulers
There are so many people in the United States that need clothes and yet this lady is ripping up shirts that could go to those in need
Actually she is saving it from the landfill, as even 85% of donated clothing goes to the landfill or incinerator.
