It would have been more satisfying if Zero had said, "Dig" and THEN hit Pendansky with the shovel.
The reason the lizards didn’t attack Stanley and Hector is because Sam said his onions repel the lizards, which the boys ate a lot of.
I always thought it was because they ate peaches then onions, which we just discovered are the secret to removing your smell entirely

never read the book but i've heard many times that the only thing really changed significantly was that stanley was overweight in the beginning but lost weight rapidly while at the camp but they didn't want to put a literal child through that kind of treatment so they just decided to make stanley skinny the whole time. it's a change that is universally agreed upon as not just good, but actually responsible

Yea I remember reading the book in school before they'd show the movie to us, and they kept a lot of it pretty accurate!
In my opinion, Holes is the most underrated film Disney ever made. I loved it as a kid when it 1st came out & still enjoy it today. Instead of live action remakes of animated films, Disney should adapt more books middle & high school students read into films like they did with Holes.

What’s interesting is that the author Louis Sachar of the book probably had some creative control since he was the writer behind the movie. I honestly wouldn’t been surprised if this was going to be made to be direct-for-television, but he convinced Disney to put it in theaters, and it surprisingly paid off.
It's hardly underrated. It was very popular and played regularly on Disney Channel.
I hated it cuz every time we had spare time for a movie in school they played holes😂 but now I’m starting not to hate it

We’re not mad that you didn’t watch a romcom on Valentines Day. Valentines Day is not just about romantic couples, it’s about loving the people who are closest to you. Stanley and Zero’s friendship really demonstrates this moral.
Also there is a subplot about a love story that sadly ends in tragedy.

Holes is one of those book to film adaptations that is nearly flawless. The script is practically lifted straight from the book.
Also, a lot of people study it in school, so a surprising number of people have seen this film.
Honestly my favorite book to do a report on.
I remember watching this movie in class on field day in elementary school

As far as I remember, the only parts of the story that were changed were ones that would be difficult to work in film, like Stanley going from fat to thin during his time at the camp.
I studied it in school and now as a teacher I teach it to my students. Was very happy to see it on the curriculum when I joined the staff at this school.
The lizards that portray the Yellow Spotted Lizard in the film were Bearded Dragons which are non-venomous and have a non-toxic yellow paint on their backs to give the appearance of these venomous lizards from the book.
Although the Yellow Spotted lizards are fictional, their are some venomous lizards living today, but the only venomous lizards are the Monitor and Komodo Dragons and especially the Beaded Lizards which live in the southwestern United States and Mexico, those consisting of the well-known Gila Monster and the Mexican Bearded Lizard.🦎🦎
The saliva is poisonous from Monitors and Komodos which causes irritation. Is most dangerous when getting into an open wound such as from a bite. Their tails can do damage as a swinging weapon. Gilas are both venomous and poisonous. Their sweat glands produce poison and their bites are known to kill
I remember being a kid when this movie came out. My mom asked if I wanted to see it at the theater the next day. I said yes, but didn't want to watch it before reading the book. So I borrowed the book from my teacher and read it in one day. Such a good memory 🥰 and both the book and movie still hold up.
It's actually one of the most accurate book to film adaptations.

I actually think this is a perfect movie for Valentine's Day. Kate's and Sam's love is a very integral part of the story; plus you have the platonic love between Stanley and Zero. it fits. this is one of those perfectly written stories that's very rare and is almost perfectly adapted from book to film. I do hope you read the book because it's so good and adds just that little extra detail that makes the story come alive. thanks for the reaction Ang! ❤
When I say I cried during the Sam boat scene, I'm not just talking about the movie, but the book, too. It was the first and so far only book to make me so invested in the characters I cried. This was such an amazing movie and book.
fun fact, Shia and Max Kasch (who played ZigZag) reunited just a couple years later and were in another Disney movie together; The Greatest Game Ever Played. it was a pretty good film imo based on true events, i do recommend :)
Crazy to think this was a Disney movie cause when I saw the commercials and the advertisements for this movie they didn’t include or mention it was from Disney. Of course the trailer/promo VO guy has done a lot of trailer narrations for Disney, so that was a clear takeaway.
Anyways it’s interesting that it’s been almost 20 years since the movie came out and it’s easily not only the most underrated Disney film but also best book film adaptations during the 2000’s and love the incredible cast consisting of Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Henry Winkler, Eartha Kitt and Patricia Arquette.
The author of the book, Louis Sachar, did the screenplay, which is why the movie gave a lot of justice to the book.
I think I read that the lizards didn't attack Stanley and Zero at the end because they had eaten the onions, so the boys' scent was either pacifying the lizards, or gave off a "not food"/"possibly poison" message to the lizards, deterring an attack.
Secondhand Lions is a movie that has a similar vibe to this movie. Made in the 2000s, set in different time periods, stories being told by characters within the narrative that tie the movie together, found family feels, cheesy cross dissolves and fade outs and ins, parts that make you laugh and then parts that make you cry or flinch in shock, most plot points tie together at the end. It’s a beautiful movie with a great cast too.
Even though it’s not quite the same vibe, I’d also recommend Penelope (2006) if you haven’t seen it. It stars Christina Ricci and James McAvoy as the leads and they have amazing chemistry.

The book is *fantastic*: not only did it win the Newbery Medal (a major award for children's literature), but it was also just one of those books that (I think) every kid knew about. My fifth-grade teacher read it to us in class, and as an adult, it's still great.
Also, the book is incredibly dry in a way you don't expect from YA fiction (at least, you didn't expect it at the time), and that's part of its charm:

It's so much fun: It's got an amazing love story, pirates, really good sword fighting choreography, a giant and much more.
I think you would love it. It carries as much nostalgia and good childhood memories as holes does!
Other great nostalgic movies I would recommend are The Goonies, the original Jumanji and Stand by me!

What an amazing adaptation
Holes, the novel, was forced on me in an education course. I didn't think I would like a children's novel; plus, the other couple of books I was forced to read for the class were really bad. But, to my surprise, I absolutely loved Holes. It really is one of the most perfectly written novels I've ever read. I think it has the rare quality that makes it appeal to pre-teens, teenagers, and adults. Everyone who reads it, I think, will walk away a better person. While I can't quite say that for the film, I am happy to say that they got it mostly right. I don't think viewers of the film will walk away as enriched, but they will certainly be entertained, without the side effect of being stupider when they sat down. It is an intelligent story, and it's very well told. I think it moves a tad too quickly. The novel takes more time in developing the characters. And the flashbacks come in and out so quickly that they don't have too much time to register. The interracial romance in the past feels more cliché and trite than it does in the novel. And the ending, which ties together all the loose threads, seems very ridiculous. It's exactly the same in the novel, but there's a sense of the absurd that doesn't quite exist in the film. It works a lot better. I also don't like the multitude of pop songs. I wish Disney didn't feel it such a necessity to sell soundtracks. The cast is across-the-board excellent, from the young kids to the old pros. Jon Voight is especially great. Not quite sure why we need Catwoman and the Fonze, though. 10/10.

I loved this movie, probably because its a frame by frame of the book itself. So well done.
The book was amazing, I was like 9 yrs old when I read it and I loved it so much that I went ahead and watched the movie right after.

Like I don’t think the movie portrays well enough how much they struggled and almost died reaching gods thumb, and finding the water and onions was just the best moment!!!
Classic movie and book, they weren't digging where he found the bullet because they waited until the next day. Love how all the stories fit together in this. Also I am pretty sure most forget about the chest, that kind of makes it an even better surprise.

I remember going to see this movie at the theater in 4th grade after reading the book. By far, one of the best movie adaptations of a novel I've ever seen. Damn near spot on.
Considering that Kissin' Kate is Buttercup, from Princess Bride, "I can fix that" is sort of a call back to Wesley saying "As you wish".
I first saw this movie when I was too young to put it all together. And you know how, when you learn a story when you're little, even if the story is absurd or if there's more to it you aren't old enough to understand, you accept the story as is, and then don't question it until YEARS after you're old enough to understand the full story, just because you put it in a file in your brain titled "Needs No Further Thought, The End."? I did that. I saw this movie probably 3 to 5 times, and was at least 16-years-old before I was like, "Oooooh, Madame Zeroni is Hector's ancestor and Stanley breaks his family curse by carrying Hector up the mountain!". But if I had seen it for the first time at age 12, I probably would've been able to fully appreciate it sooner.
We had to read the book and watch the movie in school, back then. It was kind of a tradition that every 8 grade treated the story in one subject.
Holes the book even has a sequel that, from what I remember from the description cus I only read the first one, follows Armpit (Theodore) after he leaves camp green lake and has his own redemption story

My brother showed me Holes on Thanksgiving two years ago. Will never forget it such a great movie one of my favs
I have fond memories of my mom reading the book to my sister and I when we were kids! Like others have said, as far as adaptations go, the movie is impressively faithful to the book, so you're bound to love the book too if you read it. It really is a compelling story that sucks you in, and does such a great job laying the groundwork for all the payoffs at the end. Now I really want to re-read the book and re-watch the movie myself!

Definitely a favorite movie from my childhood. The writing is so good. There are so many details that connect and intertwine everyone's stories, and it all feels natural, not forced.
For whatever reason, this is my favorite movie of all time. I have no real reason why. I just really love this movie and never get tired of watching it. Seen it atleast a billion times and I have the book that I may or may not have “allegedly” stole from my school library like 15 years ago. Lol
This, actually, wasn't originally a Disney Channel movie. This, was theatrically released, but reran all the time on the channel.
I'll count this as a romantic movie because I think Sam The Onion Man and Kate Barlow is one of the sweetest romances in film. The section of this movie that is, what I call "The Ballad of Kate Barlow" is one of my favorite mini films, inside another film. And how it is relevent to the main story is also partially why I love this story so much.
I think Holes is a great example of narratives coming together.
I haven't seen the film but read the book as a kid and I remember loving it. The author wrote another book - Boy in the Girls' Bathroom that I really liked as a kid as well.
This is one of the most solid movies ever! The writing is phenomenal!! It's maybe not my favorite movie, but it's one I'm always down to watch 😁

1992 Radio Flyer staring Elija Woods and Tom Hanks is a great forgotten inspirational story like this
fun fact- although you probably know this if you've read the book by now: almost the only difference between the book and the film is that in the book, stanley is fat, and loses weight quickly after being sent to camp green lake because of the overworking and underfeeding. a little sad to lose that fat representation, but completely understandable, bc the reasoning was that they didn't want to force a teenage actor to lose weight during filming bc it would have been unhealthy. so overall an excellent adaptation that was able to remain almost fully faithful to the source material!

Additionally, I can't see this movie without thinking about a Tumblr post from years back. Someone stated something along the lines of "Why is it always the men getting revenge? Give me a movie about a woman who lost the man she loves and went berserk, taking vengeance on everybody," to which somebody responded with a picture of Sam the Onion Man, "I can fix that."
One of the best and underrated Disney movies of all time! I'm half way through the video and wanted to clarify the "bullet" (case of lip stick). If it was a "bullet" like how a bullet is before being loaded, the bullet would not have traveled anywhere. Bullets have 2 observable parts, the actual bullet and the casing. When a bullet is fired the casing is ejected (the things coming from the side of the gun when shot. Referred to as brass). The casing is normally the most notable part and the actual bullet is smaller in comparison. The lip stick looked like the bullet and the casing meaning if it was a bullet, it wouldn't have been fired.
This movie was such a great adaption from the book. Such an underrated film.
Interracial Marriage only became fully legal in the US in 1967. That's just 56 years ago. "Olden days" is relative, sure, but it's still crazy to think that not even a full human lifetime has passed since then. It's wild that both my parents were born before a time where they could have been legally married here, let alone immigrated here thanks to the 1965 Immigration Act.
It's just one of those perfect little fun cute stories from our childhoods that still holds up to this day great stuff great reaction

I love this movie, I'm so glad you reacted to it! Also, Kate's initial reaction to Sam's death might be more accurate than we think. She's sad, but there's a bitter acceptance, because she knew how dangerous it was for an interracial couple. Especially with a black man and a white woman. Back then, it was way too common to kill black people over such minor things. Their story is so tragic, they deserved better in life.

You being scared of flushing toilets as a child was not just you - me and my friends practically started a cult at the age of 7 surrounding the toilet demon Cecil who was summoned when you flushed a toilet.
Similar, we had to keep watching until the flush sound stopped before washing our hands.

Honestly when I first read the book and watched the film I wanted to try some of the sploosh even tho it obviously was NOT good for one's body in any way lol
I was in a drug rehab that they called A.A boot camp but it was a thinly veiled work camp. we would have to have jobs give up 75 percent of our paycheck and also help build the owners home. it got shut down 2 years later for labor right violations. these places still exist for kids and people that are an "alternative for jail"
edit: it also housed kids from early as sixteen having to live next to full grown adults in their 80s

Holes was the first book I read in 7th grade that actually captivated me... till this day I can't read a full book without getting deathly bored, even Harry Potter... only read sorc stone full and half of chamber secrets before giving up lol...but the movie holes was so accurate to the book that just made it so magical...

also, what they dug up wasn't a bullet, it was a bullet casing or maybe an unfired round (unless it actually was a lipstick tube, i don't remember lmao), so it would've been located in a spot where someone fired or loaded a gun.
Movies I would recommend to watch next is Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire. They are both animated movies but they are underrated.

The Author, Louis Sachar, was one of my favorites when I was a little kid. I loved his "Wayside School" series.
No they don’t dig where the bullet/lipstick was actually found. First off it would be a good idea to dig out from there because it’s literally your only hunch/clue. If it were a bullet which we know it’s not. But also X-ray pretended to find it the next day in a different area. Stanley and hector sneak back to camp in the night and dig around where Stanley ACTUALLY found the lipstick.

I had already seen the movie back when it premiered on the Disney channel (it had some scenes censored). Then, a couple of years later, in school, we read it as a class. A few chapters per class session. And when we finished the book, we all watched the movie, which I got to see uncensored for the first time. So I have a lot of history with this movie. It was also the first movie I saw Shia in. I had seen Evan Stevens, though. Also, you missed that when Stanely first arrived at the camp, he saw Sam's ghost. You were talking to the camera for some reason.
