This used to be my favorite movie ever growing up. Born in the Philippines I always dreamed of becoming an American so when we got our green card in 2012, a week after I joined the USMC. After my military career, I was provided a college education. I promised this once I’m a civil engineer I will give it my all to contribute in this great nation.

I don't care for religion all that much, but the Reverend was a character I really wanted to survive so he could keep being a Reverend. A Reverend who is willing to pick up arms and defend the people he preaches to probably teaches them the right things.
My favorite line from this movie comes from the Frenchman after Martin looks at him strangely while he is adjusting his uniform all he says is " if I'm going to die I'll die well dressed" cracks me up every time.

Soundly beat? I beg to differ. The war didn't end until 1783 to which there were still 17,000 British troops stationed in several cities along the East Coast. The war ended because Lord North's cabinet had rightly come to the conclusion that it was an end to a line of business. The British had utterly defeated the French at the Battle of the Saintes in 1782 thereby securing the sugar islands from "American", French and Spanish encroachment and conquest. They were far more valuable than a load of ungrateful Colonies that stabbed the very establishment that had created them in the back. Let us spare a thought for the African slaves and Native Indians that might have had a better chance at emancipation and SURVIVAL had the British succeeded in in quelling the rebellion. Additionally, spare a thought for the hundreds of thousands of Loyalists that were brutalised and humiliated by the Rebels when most wanted little more than the status quo. The war was more a victory for France that was still smarting from her defeat in the Seven Years War (ironically France's establishment would come to regret their DECISIVE involvement as their heads rolled off the guillotine). I find it quite disturbing that you, a soldier like me, should be so ignorant of the propaganda and horrific embellishment inherent with American popular and academic history. Bare in mind that American nationalism did not take off until well after this conflict... with the embellishments and lies that accompany a creation myth. Shame.

Neil Conde The 13 Colonies were taxed 1/5 of what was being taxed, on average, in the south of England AND they enjoyed a better standard of living. It's very realistic. It's just not historically accurate. Although it has more accuracy than some people realize. Tavington, for example, is closely based on Banastre Tarleton, a Tory who led British troops in the South and had a well deserved reputation for brutality until he was killed at Cowpens. If it hadn't been for ragged bands of militia fighting under leaders like Francis Marion (the Swampfox), the South would have been lost to British control by the time Washington appointed Nathaniel Greene to take command of Continental forces in the South.
I watch this every year on the Fourth of July. I own the directors extended version and this year it rained and I didn't care because I watched it all the way through. I don't care about the criticism of this movie. As a historian of 18th century and colonial America I love it because it covers a wide spectrum of the war in the south through these fictional characters inspired by legends.
Probably one of the dopest sound tracks of all time. You can just feel the patriotism and the fight for liberty. John Williams is one of a kind no one can replace him. This song never fails to make me feel proud to be an American and a patriot

In the 1920s, the USSR invaded Poland under Stalin’s orders. US pilots who had flown in combat in WWI asked Poland permission to join their fight. They were approved, and took the name Kosciusko Squadron…returning liberty for liberty. The USSR made it to within about 60 miles of Warsaw…when stout Polish Army resistance aided by the Kosciusko Squadron in the air, decimated the Soviet advance and kept Poland free until the Nazis invaded and the Allies failed to honor treaty obligations to defend Poland, leading to Hitler taking Poland, then most of Europe, including France. When I was 14-15 years old, my family brought the first DVD player and the producer has gave the DVD version of this movie as promotion, of course, the only DVD I have at that time. Therefore, I watched this movie hundreds of times.......

Ita just a movie, but it represents a people that wont quit no matter what the odds. They will go to any means to achieve their goals and solve the problems the country faces for the sake of freedom. We face a time now with different foes, but I believe America will prevail. We won our freedom, and freed the world from fascism in the 1940's. I love my country.
No your country jumped in because Roosevelt wanted it. And because of Japan primarly. The nazi were crushed by the soviets. Leningrad, Stalingrad and the battle of Britain were the turning points. Technically the French 'army' was more powerful than Britain's, but Britain was the major power at sea. Only, in a rare string of sea victories against Britain, the French prevented the delivery of British reinforcements by sea. Hence, the overwhelming majority of Britain's army never even took part in the revolutionary war. So much for David and Goliath.

The final battle in this movie is a reenactment of The Battle of Cowpens in 1781, which took place in upstate South Carolina. The British were defeated, but Col. "Tavington" (act. Tarleton) survived and lived to the ripe old age of 78....unfortunately.
While I'll agree Tarleton was a dickhead (like his main rival, Francis Marion **cough** ''Benjamin Martin'' the Swamp Fox aka ''The Ghost'', in the film, he supported slavery - one of a steadily declining number of British men of power to do so, him leading the opposition party after this war against the Right-Honourable William Wilberforce, whose Abolitionist movement eventually defeated Tarleton and his cronies - and was a violent man) it is unfair to designate Cowpens as the only inspiration to the ''final battle''. It was more like a mash up of the *Battle of Guildford Courthose* (a bit of a somewhat costly British Victory) and Cowpens (a serious British defeat of ''Tarleton's Legion'') perhaps with a few other skirmishes thrown in for inspiration. Britain actually won a significant proportion of the important battles and skirmishes of the American War of Independence (around 2/3 of them) But the situation with Britain fighting a global war with no major allies, and still unhappy with the war dragging out, among the public and politicians, made the war untenable. Yes, the American rebels did score some important victories (by my reckoning, none more important than Saratoga, with Yorktown as a close second in importance - why? Because the two battles of Saratoga fully convinced the French Empire to send boots on the ground, and even more money support than it was already long giving to the rebels on the sly, and openly, officially going into a full state of conflict with Great Britain. It was Saratoga which led to the French cutting Cornwallis's retreat off at Yorktown, which while materially and strategically decisive and ultimately more conclusive than Saratoga itself, would not have happened had Saratoga before this not unfolded) Of course, you can lose almost every battle and still win the war; or win almost every battle and still lose the war. The fortunes of war; and in this time frame, they (mostly) went against Britain, strategically.
ThePalaeontologist Yes, I'm more or less in agreement with what you've written as far as the major battles of the war are concerned and what degree of significance they held. George Washington did indeed lose more battles than he won, but he was smart enough to keep his army intact until the French could intervene. As biographer Joseph Ellis observed, Washington was a "rock-ribbed realist." He (Washington) knew his army couldn't stand toe-to-toe with the most powerful country on Earth, so he wore their forces down in a conflict of attrition. By 1781, the cost of the war to the Crown had become prohibitive. As far as the final battle in _The Patriot_ is concerned, my reasons for positing inspiration by the Battle of Cowpens were fourfold: 1) the similar location, South Carolina 2) the involvement of "Tavington" (who was clearly based on 'Bloody Ban the Butcher' Tarleton), 3) the primary involvement by militia instead of regular Continental troops, 4) the strategy, in which the American center was made a deliberate weak point so that it could fall back under assault, thereby allowing the right and left flanks to crush the British. Having said that, one glaring error in the movie was the presence of Gen. Cornwallis, who did not participate in the Battle of Cowpens. Granted, Cornwallis was at Guilford Court House, but, unlike the final battle in the movie, GCH was a British victory, albeit a Pyrrhic one. Of course, the real authorities as to what battl(es) were represented in the final clash in _The Patriot_ would be the writer or the director. Without any input from them, we're both just exercising in conjecture.
juicer67 I'd go even further; Washington was a British officer in the Seven Years War and was technically part of events which set off that war in the first place. In many ways, Washington was important to both wars, consecutively. However, in the Seven Years War, Washington became disillusioned with the British Army and was constantly held back by the elitist aristocrats who saw Americans as subjects and not to be full equals. Sadly, that is part of the problem. After all, the British ''elites'' subjugated and bullied their own and would do for a long time (and to some extent still do, the gulf between rich and poor, growing) But the thing is, Washington actually admired the British and its military prowess. Had certain unpleasant people not got in his way, maybe none of it would have happened. In many ways, Washington cynically springboarded off the AWofI with prior knowledge and insider detail on how the British military functioned. He was at Monongahela as General Braddock's second in command and aide de camp, as a Lieutenant-Colonel of the Virginia Colonial Militia. Washington saved Braddock after he was mortally wounded, from the unfolding debacle, and had urged to break the formations. Essentially, while it is a gross and unfair exaggeration going around somewhat popularly that the British ''redcoats'' couldn't handle forest fighting (the truth being something far different, with the British being much stronger in this type of fighting than the common myth tells) the reality was that Washington understand much of the outcome depended on the generalship. He must have known that he could use the variable attitudes, personalities and egos of the British aristocratic generals, against them. He respected his genuine friend and colleague, British General and short-lived Commander-in-Chief of all British forces in North America, in 1755, Braddock. But he knew Braddock was headstrong, inflexible and disdainful of non-European fighting styles. He knew that, although he looked up to and endeared to Braddock for a time, and though Braddock clearly must have shown Washington some respect to some extent at least (perhaps for the first time in Washington's career feeling respected by a higher rank) Washington must have known that he could use these traits against some of the British generals. Braddock was hit in the abdomen while leading his beleaguered force, from the front. Monongahela was a particularly terrible defeat, and the French numbering just 200, relied on over 687 native Americans who won them this battle (though it was Captain Beaujeau's plan that worked, in fairness to the French, who knew they'd lose if they waited for the British and American colonials to arrive at Fort Duquesne; Captain Beaujeau himself was killed by a British volley early in the battle) Braddock refused to allow his men to fight in loose formation and went around literally hitting his men with his riding stick if they broke formation or hid behind trees. Washington adamantly requested to ''fight as the Indians do'' but Braddock told him to mind his place and certainly not. The redcoats were firing uphill into trees with sharpshooters slaughtering them. Desperate confusion spread through the column. However, it is fairer to note that the British regiments involved, the 44th and 48th Regiments of Foot, were some of the worst in the British Army of 1755 and were outright nearly struck from the records after the shame of Monongahela. They were drafted from Ireland and had reportedly low morale, poorer discipline than the standard, and were rushed onto transport ships at shorter notice for Braddock's expeditionary foray with the Royal Navy taking him to prepare for further movements. Setting up at the staging area of Fort Cumberland, Maryland, the British expedition had little logistical understanding of how little help they'd be getting, having been used to developed European countryside, with lots of proper tracks and roads, and amenities, as well as the means to live off the land easily. At the time, not so far west of Fort Cumberland, it became a real wilderness. Braddock had been bold and brave enough to cut a trail through this wilderness with his army, and to pull off a major logistical feat in a relatively short time; over a hundred miles of forest trail from scratch. Even though dying 5 days after the battle to his wounds, and being buried into the very road he had made to exist, Washington would still remember him fondly; keeping Braddock's ornate pistols, brass plated, and his General's waist sash (bloodied) in his stately residence of Mount Vernon. Momentos of his fondest British friend. This shows just how complex Washington's relationship with the British was. He knew how and where to hurt them; and though even then the British had made major reforms and learned much even before the Seven Years War ended (the British and their allies did win, after all) in general his understanding still helped. Cowpens was definitely the main inspiration for the film battle, I'm not denying that. Just adding that Guildford Courthouse also influenced it. Note the ruined building in the scene... As for the director and producers; they denied any connection with Tavington and Tarleton, or Benjamin and Francis. They angrily denied the complaints that it was an Anti-British film...which, it really is. They just stuck their head in the sand and acted like it was a coincidence. Therefore I'd never care that much about what they had to say about it.
ThePalaeontologist You certainly know your history. I visited Mt. Vernon some years ago and vaguely recall seeing Braddock's sash. Washington's ego was not any smaller than that of his British counterparts; hence, his deep umbrage at being treated like a Colonial bumpkin, lacking in the military polish and skill of a "proper" British officer. Before the revolution, most of the protesting colonists didn't want separation from the Crown. Rather, they wanted to be treated as British citizens with the same rights as their peers back in Britain. Even Alexander Hamilton admired the British, hoping to model the new American government on their parliamentary model, called by Hamilton "the best in the world." In retrospect, it can be argued that the colonists' gripes about taxes were not entirely fair, as the Crown had to spend a great deal of money to defend their North American territories against the French during the Seven Years' War. However, there were other laws that further inflamed the colonists' outrage, including the Quartering Act of 1765 and the Administration of Justice Act of 1774. Eventually, like a bad marriage, the only option remaining was 'divorce' (i.e. independence). Having said that, I realize that many colonists remained loyal to the Crown, and the 8-year conflict could rightly be described as a civil war. I wasn't aware of the obfuscation by the director and producers of _The Patriot_. I guess they didn't have the guts to admit that the film had a distinct anti-British flavor. Still, it's an insult to the intelligence of the viewing public to repudiate the obvious connections, especially the one with Banastre Tarleton. I suppose honesty is not a valued trait in Hollywood.

It's very realistic. It's just not historically accurate. Although it has more accuracy than some people realize. Tavington, for example, is closely based on Banastre Tarleton, a Tory who led British troops in the South and had a well deserved reputation for brutality until he was killed at Cowpens. If it hadn't been for ragged bands of militia fighting under leaders like Francis Marion (the Swampfox), the South would have been lost to British control by the time Washington appointed Nathaniel Greene to take command of Continental forces in the South.
Without the past, there is no future, and America's history cannot be forgotten.

I watch this every year on the Fourth of July. I own the directors extended version and this year it rained and I didn't care because I watched it all the way through. I don't care about the criticism of this movie. As a historian of 18th century and colonial America I love it because it covers a wide spectrum of the war in the south through these fictional characters inspired by legends.

In the 1920s, the USSR invaded Poland under Stalin’s orders. US pilots who had flown in combat in WWI asked Poland permission to join their fight. They were approved, and took the name Kosciusko Squadron…returning liberty for liberty. The USSR made it to within about 60 miles of Warsaw…when stout Polish Army resistance aided by the Kosciusko Squadron in the air, decimated the Soviet advance and kept Poland free until the Nazis invaded and the Allies failed to honor treaty obligations to defend Poland, leading to Hitler taking Poland, then most of Europe, including France. Technically the French 'army' was more powerful than Britain's, but Britain was the major power at sea. Only, in a rare string of sea victories against Britain, the French prevented the delivery of British reinforcements by sea. Hence, the overwhelming majority of Britain's army never even took part in the revolutionary war. So much for David and Goliath.

The final battle in this movie is a reenactment of The Battle of Cowpens in 1781, which took place in upstate South Carolina. The British were defeated, but Col. "Tavington" (act. Tarleton) survived and lived to the ripe old age of 78....unfortunately.
While I'll agree Tarleton was a dickhead (like his main rival, Francis Marion **cough** ''Benjamin Martin'' the Swamp Fox aka ''The Ghost'', in the film, he supported slavery - one of a steadily declining number of British men of power to do so, him leading the opposition party after this war against the Right-Honourable William Wilberforce, whose Abolitionist movement eventually defeated Tarleton and his cronies - and was a violent man) it is unfair to designate Cowpens as the only inspiration to the ''final battle''. It was more like a mash up of the *Battle of Guildford Courthose* (a bit of a somewhat costly British Victory) and Cowpens (a serious British defeat of ''Tarleton's Legion'') perhaps with a few other skirmishes thrown in for inspiration.
Britain actually won a significant proportion of the important battles and skirmishes of the American War of Independence (around 2/3 of them) But the situation with Britain fighting a global war with no major allies, and still unhappy with the war dragging out, among the public and politicians, made the war untenable. Yes, the American rebels did score some important victories (by my reckoning, none more important than Saratoga, with Yorktown as a close second in importance - why? Because the two battles of Saratoga fully convinced the French Empire to send boots on the ground, and even more money support than it was already long giving to the rebels on the sly, and openly, officially going into a full state of conflict with Great Britain. It was Saratoga which led to the French cutting Cornwallis's retreat off at Yorktown, which while materially and strategically decisive and ultimately more conclusive than Saratoga itself, would not have happened had Saratoga before this not unfolded)
Of course, you can lose almost every battle and still win the war; or win almost every battle and still lose the war. The fortunes of war; and in this time frame, they (mostly) went against Britain, strategically.
ThePalaeontologist Yes, I'm more or less in agreement with what you've written as far as the major battles of the war are concerned and what degree of significance they held. George Washington did indeed lose more battles than he won, but he was smart enough to keep his army intact until the French could intervene. As biographer Joseph Ellis observed, Washington was a "rock-ribbed realist." He (Washington) knew his army couldn't stand toe-to-toe with the most powerful country on Earth, so he wore their forces down in a conflict of attrition. By 1781, the cost of the war to the Crown had become prohibitive.
As far as the final battle in _The Patriot_ is concerned, my reasons for positing inspiration by the Battle of Cowpens were fourfold: 1) the similar location, South Carolina 2) the involvement of "Tavington" (who was clearly based on 'Bloody Ban the Butcher' Tarleton), 3) the primary involvement by militia instead of regular Continental troops, 4) the strategy, in which the American center was made a deliberate weak point so that it could fall back under assault, thereby allowing the right and left flanks to crush the British. Having said that, one glaring error in the movie was the presence of Gen. Cornwallis, who did not participate in the Battle of Cowpens. Granted, Cornwallis was at Guilford Court House, but, unlike the final battle in the movie, GCH was a British victory, albeit a Pyrrhic one.
Of course, the real authorities as to what battl(es) were represented in the final clash in _The Patriot_ would be the writer or the director. Without any input from them, we're both just exercising in conjecture.
juicer67 I'd go even further; Washington was a British officer in the Seven Years War and was technically part of events which set off that war in the first place. In many ways, Washington was important to both wars, consecutively. However, in the Seven Years War, Washington became disillusioned with the British Army and was constantly held back by the elitist aristocrats who saw Americans as subjects and not to be full equals. Sadly, that is part of the problem. After all, the British ''elites'' subjugated and bullied their own and would do for a long time (and to some extent still do, the gulf between rich and poor, growing)
But the thing is, Washington actually admired the British and its military prowess. Had certain unpleasant people not got in his way, maybe none of it would have happened. In many ways, Washington cynically springboarded off the AWofI with prior knowledge and insider detail on how the British military functioned.
He was at Monongahela as General Braddock's second in command and aide de camp, as a Lieutenant-Colonel of the Virginia Colonial Militia.
Washington saved Braddock after he was mortally wounded, from the unfolding debacle, and had urged to break the formations.
Essentially, while it is a gross and unfair exaggeration going around somewhat popularly that the British ''redcoats'' couldn't handle forest fighting (the truth being something far different, with the British being much stronger in this type of fighting than the common myth tells) the reality was that Washington understand much of the outcome depended on the generalship. He must have known that he could use the variable attitudes, personalities and egos of the British aristocratic generals, against them.
He respected his genuine friend and colleague, British General and short-lived Commander-in-Chief of all British forces in North America, in 1755, Braddock. But he knew Braddock was headstrong, inflexible and disdainful of non-European fighting styles. He knew that, although he looked up to and endeared to Braddock for a time, and though Braddock clearly must have shown Washington some respect to some extent at least (perhaps for the first time in Washington's career feeling respected by a higher rank) Washington must have known that he could use these traits against some of the British generals.
Braddock was hit in the abdomen while leading his beleaguered force, from the front. Monongahela was a particularly terrible defeat, and the French numbering just 200, relied on over 687 native Americans who won them this battle (though it was Captain Beaujeau's plan that worked, in fairness to the French, who knew they'd lose if they waited for the British and American colonials to arrive at Fort Duquesne; Captain Beaujeau himself was killed by a British volley early in the battle)
Braddock refused to allow his men to fight in loose formation and went around literally hitting his men with his riding stick if they broke formation or hid behind trees. Washington adamantly requested to ''fight as the Indians do'' but Braddock told him to mind his place and certainly not. The redcoats were firing uphill into trees with sharpshooters slaughtering them. Desperate confusion spread through the column.
However, it is fairer to note that the British regiments involved, the 44th and 48th Regiments of Foot, were some of the worst in the British Army of 1755 and were outright nearly struck from the records after the shame of Monongahela. They were drafted from Ireland and had reportedly low morale, poorer discipline than the standard, and were rushed onto transport ships at shorter notice for Braddock's expeditionary foray with the Royal Navy taking him to prepare for further movements. Setting up at the staging area of Fort Cumberland, Maryland, the British expedition had little logistical understanding of how little help they'd be getting, having been used to developed European countryside, with lots of proper tracks and roads, and amenities, as well as the means to live off the land easily. At the time, not so far west of Fort Cumberland, it became a real wilderness.
Braddock had been bold and brave enough to cut a trail through this wilderness with his army, and to pull off a major logistical feat in a relatively short time; over a hundred miles of forest trail from scratch. Even though dying 5 days after the battle to his wounds, and being buried into the very road he had made to exist, Washington would still remember him fondly; keeping Braddock's ornate pistols, brass plated, and his General's waist sash (bloodied) in his stately residence of Mount Vernon. Momentos of his fondest British friend.
This shows just how complex Washington's relationship with the British was.
He knew how and where to hurt them; and though even then the British had made major reforms and learned much even before the Seven Years War ended (the British and their allies did win, after all) in general his understanding still helped.
Cowpens was definitely the main inspiration for the film battle, I'm not denying that. Just adding that Guildford Courthouse also influenced it. Note the ruined building in the scene...
As for the director and producers; they denied any connection with Tavington and Tarleton, or Benjamin and Francis.
They angrily denied the complaints that it was an Anti-British film...which, it really is. They just stuck their head in the sand and acted like it was a coincidence. Therefore I'd never care that much about what they had to say about it.
ThePalaeontologist You certainly know your history. I visited Mt. Vernon some years ago and vaguely recall seeing Braddock's sash. Washington's ego was not any smaller than that of his British counterparts; hence, his deep umbrage at being treated like a Colonial bumpkin, lacking in the military polish and skill of a "proper" British officer.
Before the revolution, most of the protesting colonists didn't want separation from the Crown. Rather, they wanted to be treated as British citizens with the same rights as their peers back in Britain. Even Alexander Hamilton admired the British, hoping to model the new American government on their parliamentary model, called by Hamilton "the best in the world."
In retrospect, it can be argued that the colonists' gripes about taxes were not entirely fair, as the Crown had to spend a great deal of money to defend their North American territories against the French during the Seven Years' War. However, there were other laws that further inflamed the colonists' outrage, including the Quartering Act of 1765 and the Administration of Justice Act of 1774. Eventually, like a bad marriage, the only option remaining was 'divorce' (i.e. independence). Having said that, I realize that many colonists remained loyal to the Crown, and the 8-year conflict could rightly be described as a civil war.
I wasn't aware of the obfuscation by the director and producers of _The Patriot_. I guess they didn't have the guts to admit that the film had a distinct anti-British flavor. Still, it's an insult to the intelligence of the viewing public to repudiate the obvious connections, especially the one with Banastre Tarleton. I suppose honesty is not a valued trait in Hollywood.

If only there was men and women would stand as our fathers and mothers stood 245 years ago we would show the world we haven’t lost the guts for maintaining our freedom and beliefs.
I am forever greatful of the sacrifices that both sides of this civil war made.
