    When Maximus said 'I have seen the world.. It is dark and cold. Rome is the light' I really understood what he meant from this movie. It must have been so mind blowing going on expeditions for years to dark and wild country to return to Rome in its glory.

      The free market opportunity in early rome created its prosperity. All types of workers were allowed to come to work. Only later with Ceaser Augustus was anything ever seen like that again. Rome is a marvel of its time and even our time

      ***** easy for scotland i say afterall they never really took part in the main fight for freedom from those bloody romans after the fall of the iceni a smaller army could take over and batter the hell out of any legion after all the vast majority of the roman army was to exhausted spread thin and well hated when the great queen was defeated the romans only had a army of 10000 plus the fresh but way outnumbered reinforcements imagine spreading that across london to york then all the way into wales

      ***** Rosemarie Suttcliff who had written the book in the Fiftieth, this movie is based on, would agree with you. In the book on former Centurio turned native with those tribes had helped the heros to get that eagle. The guy had been of gallic stoke himself.

    • @rogerlynch5279

      kieran simpson At least that was the spirit in which Rosemarie Suttcliff had written the book and the six other volumnes of the AQUILA SAGA after the experiences of World War II. It is strange that there seems noone around anymore knowing the books not counting her other ones about BRITISH HISTORY. In the Seventieth and Eightieth they had been quite popular. They are still around second hand

    Who is allowed to call themselves Celtic "Keltio" For consideration.John Smith the Labour party leader prior to Tony Blair . Can these two be Celtic?. Tom Jones the singer is he and Shirley Bassey Celtic. William Wallace he was a Celt ?James the 6th of Scotland was he a Celt? James Joyce? "Ulysses" the writer . Adam smith? who wrote "The Wealth of Nations". Daniel Swift ?" Gulliver's Travels "John FitzGerald Kennedy?. Truly I am asking does anyone know?

    • @wolfgangkranek6054
      @wolfgangkranek6054 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Philip Richards The term celtic itself is somewhat vague (it goes back to the name the greeks gave this populations afaik), there were different tribes and nations with a common cultural and ethnic basis but different dialects. Just like fe the old german tribes. So I would argue it all depends if you use the term in a modern context or a historical sense.

    • @DeGuillac
      @DeGuillac 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, why Scots and Irish names only? Bretons like me are purer Celts, and still speak a Celtic language, same as the old Cornish. And Welsh are just as Celtic too. But secondly, why "allowed"? Whose business is it to say yes or no? If someone Chinese wants to call himself a Celt, that's his business and who are we to say no? He might even have some Celt blood, our ancestors got everywhere.

    • @vertis43ad
      @vertis43ad 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wolfgang Kranek Thankyou for you answer . which has some of the origins to the term Celt. However a recent in depth study of the indigenous inhabitants of the British Isles found the DNA evidence being hard to distinguish between the Germanic the Celtic?

    • @wolfgangkranek6054
      @wolfgangkranek6054 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Philip Stuart Richards This comes as no surprise. When you look at the Population history of the British isles. And even on the Continent Celtic and German tribes were closely related and in some parts intermingled. Though Celts had the longer settling history in Western and Central Europe and the higher developed culture.

    • @vertis43ad
      @vertis43ad 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wolfgang Kranek Thank you Wolfgang. My initial piece was simply put to draw out comments from those to who consider themselves Celtic and us the identity to claim difference between the English & themselves. Having found such folk then to suggest as you have done that MANY peoples of Europe including the English can claim the name. . Personally I think the term Anglo Celtic describes the British indigenous population better than simply Anglo Saxon..

      The Romans never bothered. And in those days the Irish and the British were the same. Later on the British did conquer Ireland, mostly to keep us out -- or why were all those rebellions necessary? Face it, everybody's been conquered at some time or other -- the British and French perhaps less than most.
