There's a difference between liking a composer and judging one. People on the levels of Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore, John Williams and etc, are all artists. Again, they just create their music in a different way from one another. And not only that, it also depends on the movie and what their music is representing.

I think sometimes we forget that 25,000 men gave their lives for a nation that they would never live to see. These men did what was considered wrong, in order to do what they knew was right. And they did it for posterity. So that we as Americans may live in a world where a man/woman is treated like a person and not a subject/serf to a ruler/tyrant. I'm very proud to say that I am a descendant of an American Revolutionary Solider who served under Francis Marion in the Palmetto Brigade.

What comes to mind when i hear this song is the last line in the Declaration of Independence "We mutually pledge to each other; our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor." this line defined those 56 gallant men who met in the summer of 1776 in Philadelphia. I'd like for everyone to take a minute while listening to this song and close your eyes and dwell on that line, and think about what that line meant to those 56, think of how that line sealed a pact between the living, the dead and the unborn. From that document was born freedom and from the sacrifices those men made by living up to that pledge think how freedom was born because freedom was more important to those men than the security they had.

I mean, it's not like they got everything wrong. The period clothing was accurate down to the last stitch; the costume designers even got a seal of approval from the Smithsonian Institution. The movie did, however, get more than a few social conventions of the day wrong, including attitudes towards African slaves and woman. It also suffers from the crime of demonizing the British to the point of making them seem as bad as the Nazis. Also, several of the characters were hybridizations of popular figures from the American Revolution. Benjamin Martin, for example, is a blend of Francis Marion, Nathaniel Greene, and Ethan Allen; Col. Tavington is based on Bannister Tarleton; Major Jean Villaneuve is a mixture of the Marquis de Lafayette and Baron von Steuben.

I am a retired US military Vet. I love world history and my USA. Therefore, I must state, this re creation of our war for independence is my favorite. I do not glamorize war, it is ugly. However, there are times when ugly must rear it's head to rid our nations of tyranny. The USA has been "at home plate", many times and I stand and fight for her.
The soundtrack is fantastic, the film great and the message of all is truly wonderful..."be free, then be prepared to pay the cost!"...my words here. GPM-53.

Fun fact: Harrison Ford was Roland Emmerichs first choice for Benjamin Martin. Harrison was excited to play the main guy in a movie showcasing America's fight for independence, bug turned it down saying the script boiled down to a story of a father's quest for revenge.

OK, I've viewed this movie dozens of times, it is a historical story, at the very least. The musical score is truly awesome, by far. Having said that, let me state that this piece is just great. And all of the scores for this film deserve to be judged as just plain great. P.S., I may seem British in my message here, however, am not but French Canadian. Just chose to use clean language this time. Cheers and adieu.

It’s 2019 and America has never been as divided as it is now. I wish we all could just remember how these men put everything on the line for our freedoms we have today. No, we are not perfect as a nation and never will be, but we will always strive to become better than we are. No matter what our political viewpoints are let’s remember how beyond blessed we are to live in a nation that is FREE.

Yeah it would be nice, but I don’t think we’ll ever be unified again, at least not for a while. And I don’t really think we were all that unified to begin with - it’s just that no one talked about it that much. The past 5 or 6 years have just exposed it all, festering under the surface. I love this country - I wouldn’t live at any other time in any other place, and I think we can learn to be unified. I wish people would stop listening to the politicians - especially Republicans. They seek nothing else than to divide us.

One of Williams' great scores that was defeated at the Oscars by something a bit more unique--that year, Tan Dun's score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Still, The Patriot is a wonderful score, and one of a number that pertain to US history. I'm also a fan of an opening titles track that includes most of the major themes together, as this rarely seems to be the case.
My favorite segment is actually the minor section from 0:45 to 1:25, as it goes off and returns so beautifully. And it's hard to not to love the fifes/piccolos at 2:51.

I am in the unique position of being a son of a revolutionary war vet and a Hessian soldier. I know my mother's grandfather 5 generations back was taken captive by George Washington when he crossed the Delaware River to attack the Hessian compound at Trenton. Truth be told, the Hessian soldier was not treated very well and was little more than a slave. The individual soldier received only his food, cloths, and weapons. All the loot when to some lord in what is now northern France. It was likely that my namesake was in the army that captured the Hessians. I get chills when I listen to this music.
