  • The Godox UL60 is a silent LED video light designed for interviews, documentaries, broadcasting, and any video/film setting using live microphones. In this review, I take a look at the UL60, and compare it against its spiritual predecessor, the Godox SL60W.

    We are definitely in the market for a light like this, and your video throws quite a curveball at us! There are some newer solutions from Aputure, but they appear to be made of plastic and still have fans inside. Thanks so much for this thorough review and demonstration. - Miles

      You're welcome! I assume you're talking about the Amaran brand of lights. Great value for the money, but yes they have fans (I've heard the 200 is especially noisy) and aren't constructed as well. For a videographer on a tight budget, they'll do the job, but I really like these UL lights for all the reasons I mentioned in the vid. Hoping to get one of those UL 150s now!

    great video....going tomorrow to pick one up. I have been using a ring light with a few small on camera LEDs....they work fine for my needs. However, now that I am shooting in Slog2...I need two stops over. I can pull it off, but it is a little bit of a pain. I just want an inexpensive light that I can turn on, crank the power, and voila I am set. I simply sit 4-5 feet from the camera.

    Hey Todd, great video! I am curious if you've had any experience shooting film photography? It would be really dope to see your perspective and experience within that field!

    The external power/control box and the passive cooling are a nice touch with this light and the build definitely looks improved over the SL60W, but the lack of a dedicated remote is a negative for me. As much flack as the SL60W remote gets (why should you have to turn on a remote to turn on a light???! 😂), it's nice to not have to whip out my phone to remotely control a light. Considering the UL60 is basically double the price of the SL60W, the loss of the remote seems like a miss to me on Godox's part.

    • @dominey
      @dominey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I like the dedicated remotes! I'm more bummed by the lack of a padded case. :( Otherwise, it's a great light.

    Thank you 🧡. How do you think is it a good and healthy way to use this light throughout a day by lightning a working computer place? I teach students online so would like to get a fully silent key light for lessons, and would like to use it during all my other working activity.

    Does the light turn on automatically when you plug in the power cord if it was previously on?

    For a beginner videographer/photographer what would be the real life examples and uses for this light? can we have a discussion about that?

    • @dominey
      @dominey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure. This is a 5600 kelvin light, which means its neutral and resembles natural daylight. A light like this could be used for product photography, as a key light for video, or a fill / accent light (also for video). And because these run on batteries (sold separately) you could take them out in the field for outdoor shoots.

    What are you using for a key light, in these videos, today? And, did you remove the fan noise of that background light in post?

    • @dominey
      @dominey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll find the key light here (this page is always up to date): kit.co/todddominey/video-and-audio-gear-for-youtube. As for background fan noise, I typically avoid trying to remove it because it can adversely affect voiceover audio quality.

    I own two of the UL 150 and love them. Unfortunately Godox dropped the umbrella holder on the UL 60. I would have loved to use this light as a lightweight version with a lightweigt diffusion (umbrella). The 60 Watt would have been perfect. But beeing forced to use a more heavy softbox makes it useless. Godox, please don't repeat Apurtures mistake, thinking no one uses umbrellas! They are reintroducing the umbrella holder lately.

    I bought the VL 150 just 2 days ago, I am not sure I made the right decision, since the fan seems to start at 40% depending on the circumstances

    • @dominey
      @dominey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I own the VL150 as well. Fantastic light. Does have fans in the light and the control unit, but I've never had a problem with it making too much noise. Plus it comes with a nice case.

    I’m new to lighting but I thought brightness is a matter of lumens-not necessarily wattage…?

    • @kingshands
      @kingshands 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      also new but wattage = power and more wattage generates more lux
      its or whatever you call it

  • @afcl1984

    It looks nice, but for the price I would go with the Aputure Amaran 100D. It’s 100 bucks cheaper and it has 100w. Thanks for the video.

    • @dominey
      @dominey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, those are very affordable for what you get. They do make noise though and their build quality isn't as good, and their controls are on the back of the light (something I don't care for), but from a dollar-to-wattage perspective they're a nice option for sure.

    That power connector looks like a Neutrik Speakon connector (maybe a knockoff.) Interesting choice. I used to use those all the time in touring sound systems (not just me - industry thing for a while). Really rugged and high power. At the time I never thought of using them with power, so you don't accidentally plug wall power into a speaker stack :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speakon_connector

    150w?60w?

      I believe the light I used in this video was the Godox VL150, but I've since upgraded to the UL150, which is the higher wattage version of the UL60 featured in this review.

    Sorry to thumbs down your review but there are fundamental misleading information contained. You clearly haven't done any home work in regards to Godox continuous lighting range and series. Checking out a video on TH-cam like hypop's Godox lighting before posting your own would have helped you. The UL by no means is an successor of SL, not at all. Two completely different series targeting different audience. UL series audience have their own multi light kits hardcase, hence why non of UL comes with a travel case. UL can be V mount powered. SL is only AC powered entry level aiming at beginner. Godox also has ML60 which is a lot quieter than SL60W yet a lot smaller and lighter than UL60. For studio use, talking head, interview, ML60 is probably better value than UL60. Besides them, Godox VL FL series also offer similar output with different functionalities. By the way, new SL60w has updated the fan inside and no longer noisy as before, still louder than Nanlite forza 60 and ML60 though.
