Hey Kenny, I'm sure you've heard of them already but if not, it might be worth checking out the Gavin Harrison drum keys by Sonor. They have a grip at the top that allows you to finger tighten them from the key without having to touch the rods, so no finger chafing or grease/oil! Love the vids man. (edit: Just noticed somebody else suggested a similar thing below. Oh well, more options haha)
Thank you so much for the kind words, and for watching. 🤘🤘🤘 as I’m telling everyone Super Thanks is now available on my vids to help support my channel.
Hey Yaw, I dig the Tune-Bot too. My drums never sounded so good. With the snare at 295/398 G#. 26" Kick at 70/94 F. Kinda sounds like Bonham's ? Love your videos Kenny
Indeed a lot of cats use this tool. Same with Drum Dial. That's why I added settings for both to my videos. Never used one before that, but the tool is pretty cool. I added the settings to help those who use these tools have a better guide for the application of my techniques. Thank you so much for watching, and commenting.
This is EXACTLY how I tune my kit! My rack tom is a 13x9 instead of a 12x8 so it's nice and full for rock. One thing I discovered is that the fundamental pitch is the same pitch as the reso, albeit an octave lower. However the relationship between the batter and reso is only a "perfect" perfect fourth when using a two ply head on top. When I use two single ply coated Ambassadors, this does pan out symmetrically. Has anyone else noticed that? I just leave the resos at the pitch I want and then adjust the batters to get the fundamental pitch. Again, an octave lower than the reso pitch.
Not sure what you mean about the single ply heads. Since you're tuning to specific pitches, the type of head you use shouldn't affect the pitches you get.
@@EricT43 I'm referring the the overall fundamental pitch of the drum. If I want a fundamental pitch of B flat for my rack tom (at a Perfect Fourth interval) then the batter is G flat and the reso is B flat. It works with a two ply batter perfectly. With a single ply batter at the same tuning, the tom's fundamental pitch is off a bit. I forget the extent of it, but it's very noticeable. I'm just pointing out that this is my observation from experimenting. I just don't know why. So I'm asking if anyone else has noticed it themselves.
Thickness of the heads, and multiple plys can affect the shape of the tone, hence your perception of the Pitch. With a Major 3rd (G flat to B flat) especially with a two ply head you will usually get closer to a B. With the Perfect 4th (F to B flat) you are correct. You get pretty much a B flat dead on. With single ply heads the drift from the desired pitch can happen. A lot has to do with how exact your interval is. Thank you so much for commenting, and watching John. As always you have great comments
@@johnreardon4944 I see what you mean now, thanks for explaining. I suppose the relationship between top and bottom heads and the resulting fundamental is very complex. The 2-ply head will take more energy to vibrate at the same frequency as the single-ply, since it is heavier. I'm sure that has some effect on how the 2 heads interact. Interesting observation you made.
@@EricT43 That's the answer I was trying to remember! I remember now Rick Beato mentioning that in one of his videos. Or was it Kenny? I forget. Haha! I'm switching drum kits this week at my venue. Going from a 1978 Pearl luan 13x9 to a Pearl Reference Pure 12x9. I wonder how the depth ratio affects the energy. Probably a little, but I'm sure not as much as the type of heads. It will be a fun experiment!
Most players end up tuning their resonant heads too low, and wonder why their toms aren't happening. The larger the drum, the higher the reso head needs to be tuned, vs. the batter. Great video! :)
I'd like to know if the reso/batter heads are the same? What I've always heard is it's best to use the same head, single ply and thin on both sides for the brightest tone, and then it just gets darker the thicker film and thicker ply head. But then nobody ever has single ply batter heads and the heads aren't matched. So is this perfect fourth tuning for 2 ply batter/1 ply reso or matched heads as well? I just got all g12s from Evans for my Tom's matched all around. I read that a 12-in Tom is best to start with so I'm trying to go through the drum very slowly from the bottom up and experimenting. Then try to find that same sound but lower and higher in the other 10 and 14. And you eere right in another video Kenny, the finest tweaks of the key on diecast hoops make a big difference.
Hey kenny luv ur vids, i need some advice, i gotta tama hyperdrive, im having a job gettin my toms dialled in having low mass lugs and the starcast mount im having trouble sinching the hoop dwn finger tight without it flat spotting, any advice.
I’m not sure what flat spotting is BUT I do know that sometimes hoop systems like the star cast make finger tightening quite the challenge. In situations like this I use a pair of keys like the Evans/Tama/firefly keys with the knurled tip to brush vs turn up into “finger tight” position. I hope this helps. The Hyper drive are very sensitive to slight turns. 🙏 thank you for watching and for commenting. Happy holidays.

I love your videos Kenny ! But what i dont understand: with the note of the heads (c, g or whatver) what frequences are meant: the frequences of the lugs (tune-bot) or the frequence of the head in general, maybe played in the centre ?
I always tune to the frequency at the tension Rod. If I want to tune to the center, I adjust the tension rods accordingly. Thank you so much for watching, and commenting.
Any tips for tuning a 10"? Currently have it tuned to a D on the batter and an A on the reso. My setup is 10", 12", & 16. I tune my batter heads tighter than my reso
That’s a great inverted tuning if it gives you what you need. Depending on the head you are using a D is pretty high, but I bet it cuts like a knife. Thank you for watching.
@@KennySharretts what about for an 18" floor tom if my sizes are 12", 13", 16", & 18". I figured the 12 would stay at a Bb to F, but what would be a perfrct 4th from that for a 13" and a perfect 4th from a 16" being a C and a G on the bottom?
I tune my toms with tunebot. I have all the lugs of a tom at the same frequency (e.g. 160hz) but then if I later put on the drumdial the lugs are not at the same tension, in fact there is quite a difference between one lug and another. Why is that?
Because tension is relative, and also oftentimes there can be little inconsistencies in the hoop or shell. During my vids I will often get 9 out of 10 lugs perfectly matched in pitch and tension but there’s that 1 lug just a hair off in tension, but perfect in pitch. Usually by then the drum sounds so good, I put down the tools, and shoot the video 😂.
Uh, he literally just spent an entire video teaching you how tune your floor tom. You are commenting on a “HOW TO TUNE A FLOOR TOM” video!!! Are you fucking kidding? 🤦♂️
@@RustyKnorr in fairness it says how to tune a 16” floor Tom. I have a 20” with stupid bottom end which I would like to know if how I’ve tuned it is right because there might be different methods with a floor Tom that big. Now Is that okay with you or did I need to ask your permission you fucking plum!
I think what Rusty is trying to say is he sees how you can extrapolate a 20” tuning from this 16” tuning. As far as note range goes you might find that the 20 batter May start around a C or C# then try a 4th or 3rd up on the bottom head. I have two step by step floor tom tuning lessons on www.kennysharretts.com that if you do them on a 20” floor but extrapolate fir pitch you will find some great tunings for that 20 🤘🏻🤘🏻thank you so much for watching 🤘🏻🤘🏻
could you do both inverted tunings and regular tunings for toms? for example my 10" is a D 275hz/A 220hz, 12" Bb 233hz/F 175hz, & my 16 was at C 123hz/G 98hz. but it feels a bit high on my 16". so could I do the G#/C# on my 16" but leave the 10" & 12" with the inverted tuning?
Absolutely. What ever works for you is what you should do. Do note that it’s a big gap tonally between that 12” and 16” You might have to mitigate a bit between a bit lower tuning on the toms and maybe an A/D or B/E on the floor. Have fun 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
The video discusses the tunings for the bottom head as well. In the full step by step lesson at www.kennysharretts.com I walk you through tuning the top, and bottom heads. Thank you as always for watching my friend.
I don’t tune my drums; I tension them. Each shell has its own sweet spot, and different heads reach proper tension at different pitches so you can’t really aim for a specific pitch if you change head types. But the drums should sound “in tune” (if you will) with one another as long as you use the same head type for all of them and target the same tension. Snare drum I treat a little differently - I tension the batter head, and then I tune the snare side head to about a perfect 4th higher.
But then said u tuned the snare. LOL No seriously I understand your thought process on tension vs tuning. Like when I put tension on a guitar string to achieve a note, but with 6 or 8 or 10 pts its more of a tensioning, vs a tuning. Thanks for watching.

Kenny sounds like the Bob Ross of drumtuning.... ;)
🤣🤣🤣 It’s been mentioned. Thank you for watching.
Hi Kenny! Can you please share what the M-Audio keyboard you have is? Thank you.
It's an Axiom 49. Thank you for watching.
@@KennySharretts thank you! If not too much to ask, what software do you use to get sounds? Thanks!
What is the depth of this 16" floor tom? Thanks.
Very nice boss
Thank you my brother.
Hi Kenny. Is that an 8" 12? Thanks. From Pittsburgh PA
Yes indeed. And yes a vid of the type you requested is in the works. May take a bit, but it’s coming.
THIS is the way.
Thank you my brother
What’s the best way to tune a 1976 Ludwig cortex 20” floor Tom?
Uh, he literally just spent an entire video teaching you how tune your floor tom. You are commenting on a “HOW TO TUNE A FLOOR TOM” video!!! Are you fucking kidding? 🤦♂️
@@RustyKnorr *Cranky Knorr
@@KennySharretts thankyou Kenny. That is all I wanted and I’ll take a look. Thanks mate 👍🏻
could you do both inverted tunings and regular tunings for toms? for example my 10" is a D 275hz/A 220hz, 12" Bb 233hz/F 175hz, & my 16 was at C 123hz/G 98hz. but it feels a bit high on my 16". so could I do the G#/C# on my 16" but leave the 10" & 12" with the inverted tuning?
Absolutely. What ever works for you is what you should do. Do note that it’s a big gap tonally between that 12” and 16” You might have to mitigate a bit between a bit lower tuning on the toms and maybe an A/D or B/E on the floor. Have fun 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
What about the resonant head, how is that tuned
The video discusses the tunings for the bottom head as well. In the full step by step lesson at www.kennysharretts.com I walk you through tuning the top, and bottom heads. Thank you as always for watching my friend.
Master
🙏🙏🙏
is every song different then? do you have to retune drums for every single song in a studio according to the key?
No but if that’s what you are going for it would be a good idea. Thank you for watching.
what size is the other tom ?
It’s an 8” x 12”. I also did a vid with a 9” x 13” Tom and the 16” floor tom.

Thank you for watching.
Can you do an 18" Floor tom
Yes
Kenny! Your videos are extremely easy to follow and understand! Thank you! 🙏 🙏 😁Are you able to do a video of on the bottom skin in relation to the top batter head. Cheers!
Kaj_drums_music
Wow thank you so much for the kind words. Needed that today. In the full step by step lesson that is streamable at www.kennysharretts.com for only $9.99, I go more deeply into the bottom head, and the tuning interval relationship. Same with the lesson on a 14” Floor Tom. In the meantime there is a series on my YT channel channel that discusses tuning intervals on a 12” tom that may guide you as well. Thank you so much for watching.
@@KennySharretts thanks so much Kenny! Your one of the few drummers on youtube I really enjoy to watch and learn from really great videos you make! 😁 Thanks Kenny! And drum on! 🥁🥁🥁🎶🎶🎶
Also I don't meen to be forward or rude but just had a thought kinda wondering if you would like to check out my TH-cam channel ➡️ kaj_drums_music I am doing drum covers and solo stuff, would be absolutely amazing to have someone of your magnitude to check out my vids. Best regards.

It will teach you a set of tuning skills that you can use on any floor tom with 8 lugs. Thank you again for watching.
@@KennySharretts sorry about jumping the gun on this comment before watching whole video 🤦🏼
On the other hand, . My iPad is older, and the browser is having trouble when i delete comments. I tried to delete this.
Your website is killer!.. your information is phenomenal. I love that you use tunebot, dial, etc. I have iDrumTune and dial. I will eventually buy your tuning course. Thank you!
Why no mention of the resonant head?!
I mention the reso head throughout this highlight video, AND the full step by step lesson at www.kennysharretts.com
