Todd Rundgren Was So Unique And Fantastic Back N The 70s /I Love The Clothes He Wears / His Awesome Voice / And Of Course Plays The Guitar The Very Best ❤️
This particular show is historical. This was the first Interactive television concert broadcasted live. People were pushing buttons on their cable box to vote for which song they wanted him to play (A or B) when he would announce the song options.
Wow, great performance! Back in the day I knew Todd Rundgren as the AM radio "Hello It's Me" guy-- pleasant, but not compelling. Then by random chance I saw a Utopia show in late 1977 and was blown away by the hard core musicianship and have been a fan ever since.
Singing lead and playing lead guitar(the only guitar in a rock band) of this quality is the display of seriously special talent. Todd Rundgren has this obviously
His playing and technique was never better than this period. His absolute peak ! Todd,Robin trower, and later, Stevie Ray Vaughn's playing just set my soul on fire!!
There should be a special award for doing all that on a Mustang guitar. Plus one for Kasim's output on a P-bass, Willie's solid drumming, and I can't imagine how much programming Roger had to do to get his synth sounds on the other tracks. RRHOF right here.
Came to say the same about the Mustang. Ive played a Mustang and it's not exactly feature-laden. Clearly Todd didn't need much more, though there he did have a pedal switch, probably controlling an overdrive and maybe a phaser? And I used to think Jimi Hendrix was the master of using the whammy bar- this video would be an excellent argument for the throne going to Todd. He uses it so precisely and deliberately while at the same time shredding it- and never being out of tune.
Mustangs - while short-scaled are very feature laden. Todd preferred the softer tremolo of the Mustang (vs. Strat). The Mustang was Fender's most expensive guitar from the catalog during this time.
I never noticed until now that he does everything with his first and second fingers-reaches up four frets with the middle finger. That requires BIG hands. I shook his hand a couple of times (front row seats) and he has does have massive hands.
the passion felt...... that wants to be seen... loved... words not understood... that need to be loved...... the heart that speaks..... the soul felt....... that looks to be loved........ outta control......... can anyone feel the heart ... needing..... to be seen and loved...
Time Warner Cable's Qube Studio One on Riverside Drive in Columbus OH was where MTV was first broadcast and uploaded to satellite for worldwide distribution...
@@jamesmartin6709 You're right - I meant the same band played both songs, not that they are on the the same album. This song sounds like Robin Trower's BRIDGE OF SIGHS
I used to hear this song on the fm rock stations all the time in the early 70s. But then they were all bought by corporations. And they've sucked since then. No deep cuts, no imagination either.
I love the old black Fender Mustang Todd played back then. He could get some great sounds with the old workhorse.

Yes.One thee most versatile musicians of all time!
Black Maria was on the S/A album,as was Hello It’s Me!
🤘🏼 *Yes! The first "Todd Rundgren's Utopia" album is the best!* 🤘🏼
Seriously smoking version..... Utopia were truly awesome.... one of my fave songs...

Every single member of that lineup could sing lead/harmony and play the snot out of their instrument at the same time, unbelievable.
But Rock Hall? Oh no...Janet Jackson needed a spot...
Has to be some of the Best Guitar soloing of All Time!
His playing and technique was never better than this period. His absolute peak ! Todd,Robin trower, and later, Stevie Ray Vaughn's playing just set my soul on fire!!
I have seen him do this 100 times live and on vids, solo on this by far the best
So cool to see the Classic Utopia playing this. Kasim - yay!
Todd goes Guitar Hero...
Something about the 70’s.

Sometimes a mustang can bite'cha baby !!

Black Maria - I hear it a thousand times and I can't get enough...
I saw utopia on the ra tour, the stage show was over the top, when I described it to folks, they thought I was high........and I was, high as hell !
Lol me too. Ra was killer!
I was there. Same.
One of my favorite tracks from "Something/Anything". Todd is a musical genius!!!!!!
I can relate my first todd/ utopia show was opps wrong planet it was unbelievably 59 shows later an still going lol
This right here is why Todd's always been one of my fave guitar players for over 40 years.
I saw him play this a few years ago...still fantastic Todd!

Why do jews love rundgren?
Damn Todd tears up that guitar solo. Wooooo!!
Amazing! I’ve always thought Todd was one of the best guitarists around. This is why!
Timeless and unmatched. Perfect.

This is when Black Maria kicked ass . Played it live like the studio version. 👍 He focused more on guitar playing than vocals.
When has Black Maria ever NOT kicked ass?
Kasim on bass!
Awesome! I love footage of Todd from back in the 70's! 80's, 90's or any other decade for that matter!
THIS is what I listening to when the clubs were full of disco - LOLOL
The Todd Rundgren I was introduced to, a virtuoso guitarist, He wrote some good songs etc but he was a great guitarist
Fantastic and a snappy dresser to boot…
awesome footage.
Hard to watch your heros get old.
トッドのギター聴きたさに、色んなBlack Mariaを拝聴しております♬
このTV LIVE?もギンギンに弾きまくっていてgoodでした(^^)
Oh my! On fire!
Todd the God!
"who's that scart with the guitar?" Yikes! There goes Todd~
bending strings on searing riffs, all while stylin in plaid*, with an awesome band!
Something anything, wish I were there. Love the bass guitar and the bass player. Is that a Mustang Todd is playing??
2:10 The Hairy Eyeball
so good! i wanna see the rest of this set!
I was actually there. There were only 2 songs, both of which are on TH-cam. It was a TV appearance, not a concert.
Todd is God. his guitar is so good!

I thought Johnny Yuma was the Real deal, Nice job Todd !
sweeeet!
WOW ! TODD.....
I read somewhere that it was simulcast....not sure where.
Todd's mom made his pants from an old tablecloth.
Interestingly, this song is played by the same band that did 'Love is the Answer' - Utopia was amazingly versatile
This song was originally on Todd's solo album Something/Anything? Love Is the Answer was on the Utopia album Oops Wrong Planet several years later.
@@jamesmartin6709 You're right - I meant the same band played both songs, not that they are on the the same album.

Guitar God
Guitar good

Ya man
I got beat up for dressing like that. Why can he pull it off. Oh, cause he's Todd is God Rundgren. Yeah. Peace
Tight!
From the Utopia album "OOOPS! Wrong Planet!"
It's from Todd's earlier double album "Something/Anything", although I do endorse "Oops!"
Was this broadcast on Qube?
sorry, couldn't tell you. I thought Qube didn't come around until a year or two later but could be wrong.
Todd is GOD
Can anyone tell what amp Todd is using?
Mesa Boogie amp
!
Like Ace Fehley /The Best 🔥
Awesome performance.
Awful costumes...
utopia was so great but this song is so boring haha
This Song Has a Very Special Meaning To Me, I love it....
