I've watched this video several times. Learn something ea time! However I watched a video (by another You Tuber) he used to own a guitar co. A viewer complained his guitar was intonated open & 12th fret, but it was sharp, on the other notes. The guy said "it's your nut. It isn't cut properly." My old beater had the same problem, so I started filing the nut slots, just like I learned from you, a little at a time. Got them all to the same height as a credit card (daughter gave me a pick made out of one). I tuned it back up...the Old beater is perfect! I was so suprised she hasn't sounded this good in 15 yrs. It's actually a very nice sounding guitar. I may use it for more than slide now. It actually booms! Who knew?

Lot's of memories. Those Harmony guitars were given by the thousands to the USO clubs. You could go in and check one out to use inside. I spent hours sitting and strumming in many of the USO clubs during the 60's and 70's. The strings always sat too high. They would wear you out. Great job. Never heard one sound that good.

My old friend, the late Guy Clark, was not only a fine singer and songwriter. He was also a luthier. He used to take these Harmony Sovereign Jumbos, remove the backs, scallop the top braces, put them back together and put herringbone purfling on them. They sounded great!

What an excellent video and work. I was told by a guitar repairman that my old 1968 or '69 Harmony sovereign was so beat up that it wasn't worth fixing. The sides were split, top is cracked, I had the top refinished, had "dot" pickups installed in the bridge and used it professionally for a number of years. It's now sitting in a case in my temperature controlled storage space. I tend to believe the luthier/repairman's assessment. He did not want to work on it, at all. I could sent you some pictures of it to your email, if you might be interested in a MONSTER repair video. Again, thanks for all your fascinating videos. The other 41,000 subscribers and I really appreciate them.

I traded a 62 Buick for one of these in 1970. I had blown up the car racing (I was 16/17). In 1974 I started to play it. I had a 86 year old retired Gibson guitar builder that lived in Bellingham Washington rebuild it. It is in pretty good shape and I still own it 50 years later. Don’t know where the car is. All the markings were off the head so I did not know what kind of a guitar it was for years.
Oh, the old guy was from Germany and he only charged me about 20 bucks. He was a true craftsman. He took pity on a poor college student. Probably one of his last jobs. He even put on new Grover tuners. It was my main guitar until I bought a Taylor in 2004. There used to be a bird engraving on the pick guard but it wore off years ago.

I love to watch you work. Skill, experience, and a healthy dose of common sense all come together for an amazing result. These old 1260s were ladder braced and made from solid wood. I took one apart and found the mahogany was the most vitreous of any I've encountered before and since. So the raw potential is present in abundance. But the intonation and neck set are atrocious. A lot of truss rods were broken when owners tried to fix these problems by tightening it (and tightening it, and tightening it some more). When you say you suspect changing the saddle location helped the sound "a lot", I think you could put "A LOT" in caps. Good intonation releases the musical potential in the wood and resetting the neck makes them easy to play, For what it is worth, Pete Townshend played a 1260 early in his career. Your customer should have been enormously satisfied with the result.

Great sounding guitar. I went to the main PX in Bien Hoa Vietnam Army base with a friend of mine and helped him pick out a guitar. Don't remember what kind it was that been almost 50 years ago. My first guitar was a Stella black and gray flat top that was my brother's he still has it. After that I got a Kay electric. Wish I still had it back now. For a cheap guitar it played and sounded good. I have some nice guitars now but the money was more to.

I really loved this! I have a Harmony Sovereign guitar that I bought used for $68 at the Chicago Guitar Gallery on Wabash Ave. in 1963. I recently brought it back to Tokyo with me after years in my sister's care. She had a new saddle and nut installed. It has an extremely checked finish and a "custom" pick guard that I made from some white plastic scrap when I was in high school. Elmer's Glue has kept it in place for more than 50 years! It has no structural problems, neck or otherwise. It sounds almost as good as my 1992 Martin D35. I love this one and will never part with it again. Plays just great. Wish I could post a then/now picture. Thanks, especially for playing a tune on it!

Nice job as always and that guitar has a sweet clear sound. My 1st guitar, 64 yrs. ago was a Harmony that I wish I still had. It was an old archtop F hole that had a pickup fastened to the pickguard. Knowing what I do today, I could make it much nicer to play than it was when I was learning on it. Even so, it was good enough that I never got discouraged enough to actually quit.

Wonderful video - Made me think back to my teen-age guitar, a lovely blond harmony LP-shaped electric I had in 1970 - I tried to improve the terrible action by adjusting the truss rod, and I still remember the horrible feeling when the rod "popped" and the neck went up. I've never touched a truss rod since!!! I tried using it as a dedicated slide guitar - but it just made made me sad! Nice to see you resurrect that old girl back to a perfected form, your shop is kinda like heaven for guitars! Thanks!!!

I have that exact model on my bench right now. Neck joint and bridge are good and solid, no loose braces. The plastic nut and saddle are both shot, the frets are almost to the wood in spots, and the headstock is snapped. It had strings on it when I got it, the body has a nice ring to it. I have a couple other projects ahead of this, but I picked it up for $10 so no big deal if it sits.

Sovereigns deserve more respect in vintage guitar circles. Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Solid Honduran mahogany back, sides and neck. Solid red spruce top. It's practically a 60's Martin D18 with an adjustable rod. Hide glue construction and shellac finish. What's not to like? I especially like that the back is a single solid piece. They did it to save on labor back when 16" wide Honduran mahogany was readily available. Not anymore.

Jerry, good to see an old classic get it's due. I have had Harmony's, Silvertones and the like in the past. Knowing what I know now, I wish I had my old Silvertone F hole guitar. As many Harmony's that were sold in the old days, I am surprised they didn't take care in their production, but then again they were affordable (cheap) so they had to cut some costs somewhere. Oh well. Only history will tell that story. Good video and I am truly amazed at the sound of that guitar. Thanks

Hello there, I just acquired a Harmony acoustic Model-H5413G for helping a stranger move a few bicycles to a new locker. It is most definitely a vintage model from the seventies is my guess. I haven't got around to researching the year, but overall, it is in really good shape with hardly any warpage anywhere on the face or body. I believe it has probably remained unplayed all these years due to bad craftmanship of the fretboard and rear adjustable saddle. Moreover, the fretboard is unglued from the sixth fret forward and the rear Mahogany adjustable bridge is cracked right through the center of the pin seating. I believe someone honed the peg holes too much and weakened the wood strength. However, the finish and wood look like it has hardly ever been played and the glue up veneer pattern is quite unique and appealing. I ordered a new mahogany fretboard because the rear two frets are off kilter. (Sanded down too much) Moreover, I have decided to make a new bridge and get rid of the adjustable although I have a new one available. I am sure glad you posted this video because it is a big inspiration for me. I believe my Harmony will ring true and I hope it sounds as good as yours.
