The GREATEST Roast In COMEDY HISTORY
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 18 มิ.ย. 2024
- Hey everyone, today's video is on Norm Macdonald's performance on the Roast of Bob Saget. With the Roast of Tom Brady being so heavily talked about I figured i would take a deeper dive at the roast I find to be truly the funniest roast of all time given the splendid performance by Norm Macdonald. Many comedians loved this performance such as Colin Quinn, Greg Giraldo, Marc Maron, Louis C.K, and many more. Some comedians were confused by it, but most people understood that Norm's inoffensive jokes was a roast of the roast itself. To me, that's what made this roast so special. The next roast I will cover will be Patrice O'Neal's roast of Charlie Sheen and the other roasters. Anyway, If you enjoyed this comedy lore enough please like the video, subscribe to the channel, turn on post notifications, and share this with someone you think would enjoy it. Thanks for watching, I love you guys.

Correction: Artie Lange was NOT on Joe Buck Live until AFTER the Comedy Central roast of Bob Saget! My mistake!
Andy Sandberg was one of the only other to nice roast. Sweet roasts are only for the deeply closeted. Norm joke I stole
@@Toadonthetable Yes, he continued Norm's concept of roasting the roast itself.
@@Elmesal I'm so bad at commenting. But thank you for replying. I just hope I'm not being rude.

Norm was the smartest guy in the room playing the dumbest guy, rip legend!
Truly one of the greats
This guy gets it
I myself have learned to compose myself in this same manner… when he said “nobody likes when someone is smarter than them” it just suck with me forever on. Im a window and door salesman, other than windows and doors unless its something youre asking me about i will try to get you to present as the smart one and whatever u say im pretending to eat it up
@@thegreatone03 he's crushing it
He found truly the only way to shock the crowd. That’s genius.
So many of Norm’s funniest moments happened after someone tried to tell him how to do comedy.
There's no definition of Norm's comedy.
But this comes close.
It's as if young Norm saw what comedians thought what comedy was and found THAT hilarious.
@@roel.vinckens "Pythonesque" exists because they didn't want to be definable.
@@jamesdavis3851 Python is great, but Norm doesn't need a word for that.
This
Norm will forever have the best roast set on the "Roast of OJ Simpson" which was just Norm's entire SNL career
Well Update at least
The audience was torn.
Bunch of non dog house owners
@@hey_its_travis
And the others were deeply closeted.
I know that reference 👍🏼
His SNL OJ jokes were COMEDY GOLD!!!
Truly
How the hell is Artie Lang the only one left alive out of him Norm and Bob.
It makes no sense. It's akin to how almost only nice people get cancer.
A lot from the Saget roast are dead.. Giraldo, Saget, Norm, Leachman, Godfried
@@gregoryberg5806 I know. But how is Artie not 1 of them. Almost guarantee that he's been the hardest on his body out of all of them. Hopefully we don't loose anymoe great comedians this year. Stay Happy and Healthy
@@farmonious420idk man, I think Bob's family image, hid a party animal underneath. I bet he could go line for line and beer for beer with artie.
His portrayal as a coke head was too good in half baked. The way he delivered the iconic quote I can't repeat cause it will get removed, that shit came from a real place, like some Daniel day Lewis method acting.
@@raizenmazoku1519 Agreed, but Artie is the only one to have nose surgery because of his addiction.
I never thought Saget was clean. My a parents used to laugh at the fact he protrayed such a squeaky clean image on TV because they were into standup and had heard his blue comedy.
It's a shame he and Norm are gone.
Stay Happy and Healthy, enjoy the next comedy act you watch.
Everyone else: let's roast the other attendees.
Norm: roasts the concept of roasting itself.
Truly a scholar and a gentleman.
Two steps ahead of everybody
That's 4D Chess if I have ever seen it
This video reminded me of that tragedy.
Norm's passing was one of the very few celebrity deaths that actually affected me. I was stunned the morning I heard and almost cried. I hope he is remembered as one of the greats for generations and continues to warm the hearts of old chunks of coal like me.
This sums up my feelings. I still am saving to watch his last Netflix release because there is something hopeful in knowing I haven't heard all of his material yet. It is really nice that a young guy like the video creator can appreciate his genius.
@@balbomb Same, I can't bring myself to watch it yet. I haven’t watched Dirty Work or The Norm Show yet for the same reason.
Netflix should be ashamed not getting norm on the tom brady roast.
Andy Samberg definitely took a page out of Norm’s book 😂
"There's nothing more damn funny than nobody laughing" Norm MacDonald's sweet spot !!! ❤
I remember laughing to no end at Norm MacDonald's roast for Bob Saget. Like I had to rewind it and watch it again.
Man I miss that word. Rewind.
Norm MacDonald's target audience was Norm MacDonald, but he was okay with it if we laughed too.
The contrast between Norm's roasting of OJ, Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Bob Saget is a showcase of how beautifully intricate Norm was as a human being and of his versatility as a comedian.
Norm was vicious and out for justice against OJ, he was grossed out by the pretentiousness and smugness of Neil so he roasted him as a fellow (though non narcissistic) intellectual and he "roasted" Saget in the most ballsy but loving way possible while playing dumb. All consequences of how Norm went through multiple near death experiences throughout life. Taking no bs, giving no fcks but being truly compassionate and empathic because he had learned what was important in life.
I miss Norm, and I find him to be one of the most interesting and complex human beings I have ever had the pleasure to be able to listen to.
I like this comment. It’s true how big his range of comedy was, and I agree with what was said about OJ… he was ruthless, and rightly so. Thanks for writing all this, it’s made me think, and helped offer me a fresh perspective on things ☺️
AMEN!
Norm made his good friend Bob laugh his ass off and then made him almost cry, then made him laugh his ass off some more.
They both almost cried when Norm started getting sentimental. When this first aired I didn’t really pick up on what was going on, but that was a real beautiful moment there.
Norm had the balls to be himself no matter what. This is the reason so many comedians love him, he was fearless.
Norm’s roast for Bob Saget was great, but I also appreciated Andy Samberg doing a somewhat similar thing at the Roast of James Franco
It’s a great reference and I think Samberg has such respect for norm
Nate and Jake from Joke Wrld are definitely the best 2 youtubers that promote/talk about comedy. Clearly they know their comedy, and theyre not trying to get views by shitting on comedians over and over. This is where you get your comedy news coming from real comedy fans!
Idfw joke wrld. To each there own but idfw promoting chris d’elia after the most recent incident to go and do the exact thing hes been using to commit those acts. Chris is a sketch ball because he was a famous comedian. That allowed him to exercise his demons. You wanna support him in getting help, you wanna support him in staying mentally healthy? Thats cool, you wanna support him to go do the exact same thing hes been doing over and over… not cool lol
The Charlie Sheen Roast was just iconic at the time, the timing of it, with him going off the rails. It was great.
I’m gonna cover that one very soon cause I love Charlie Sheen and then Patrice brought the heat
Where's the Greg Geraldo fans out there? Norm was the King - Greg was the next in line
Are you talking as a roast comic? Or comic in general? I think greg was a better roaster, norm was a way better comedian. R.i.p. to both.
Greg deserves his own video. He was a Harvard law graduate, a Tough Crowd regular, and one of the most consistently funny roasters. He was finally starting to gain recognition outside of the roasts when he died. Damn near every comic of his generation had respect for him.
💯% Roast In Peace King Geraldo 👑
Facts
Greg is the goat of roasts
The fact that no one got it makes it masterful

Thank you for your posts and the joy they bring !
He underwhelmed on purpose. Trolled the audience, made his friends laugh. Its good in my book.
Seeing you cover how Norm flipped the comedy roast concept on its head makes me wonder if you'll ever cover Norm's posthumous "Nothing Special" special, where he's performing standup in his room through a Zoom camera all while taking the piss out of the live standup format and flipping it on its head. In a way his off kilter approaches to that special and his roast segment both go hand in hand.
I could definitely cover that one day - very interesting outlook on Nothing Special
@@TheComedyHistorianThere are these holographic Elvis shows now in Vegas. They should make one of Norm doing his ZOOM set but as if he was doing an actual stand up act. It would be amazing to see.
The one and only time I gave a solo standing ovation, crying like a not so deeply closeted non-doghouse owner.
Heartfelt.
11:58 frank Stallone 🤣🤣🤣
Spit out my drink! That was so perfectly timed. Norm would be proud. 👏👏👏
The Roast Of Charlie Sheen was pretty solid too. Patrice O'neal had a whole bit written down but just shot from the hip instead, it was epic.
Your love for Norm could not be more obvious...the writing you did on this narration is your best work yet....you're a young man with an old soul, which is evidenced in every video you do.....keep at it my man....congrats on 20k+ subs....be safe, be great ✌😁
an old soul in the body of an old chunk of coal !
I know Letterman’s relationship with Norm was special, but Bob’s words that he put out after Norm’s death to me were the most touching. I remember listening to Bob talk about his friend, and it was hard not to feel for him.
Norm never cared what people thought when he was on stage. The best.
I was surprised the crowd was so quiet. I was rolling
It's way too bad that Artie lange wasn't on that roast I think it would've only added to it Tremendously.
It's getting almost impossible to shock an audience today but i could do 1 thing on stage that would have people gasp!, and litterally bring the police and fire department, what 1 thing you ask ? light a ciggarette !
This was the perfect take on that roast. Also very smooth the way you slid his jokes in there
Thanks a lot my brother - hope you subscribe to see more
@@TheComedyHistorian Already done before the comment
The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts ran for 10 seasons (1974-1984) with 54 episodes...
There is definitely footage of Jimmy Dore absolutely losing it in the crowd during Norm’s set
Norm is so easy to revere because anyone incapable of appreciating him or being outright offended by him offer little by way of a meaningful contribution to the advancement of the collective…. Something which I feel Norm almost used his gift for insight and comedic delivery to be a genuine ambassador for.
Great video Nate, thanks for putting this together and highlighting this epic moment in comedy history.
You, sir, definitely own a doghouse.
Thank you for the kind words my friend ♥️
Perfect analysis, man. Absolutely perfect. You hit the nail on the head. I'm a lifetime Norm fan, and this is EXACTLY what was happening. Great content .
Norm is #1 on my list. Can't get enough. another great video dude!
It was interesting to see, whenever Norm appeared with other comedians and celebrities, how he would commit to what he was doing, and how the untalented and self important ones never understood the joke.
Thank you for making this, R.I.P. Norm
This is literally one of my favorites! Just found this channel... have you done the Gilbert Gottfried Aristicrat joke at the Hugh Hefner roast?? That's one of my favorites!
I have not done that yet, but I do want to start to cover more Gilbert Gottfried content very soon. I’m happy you enjoyed the video my friend ❤️ I hope you subscribe to see more
I'm totally going to subscribe, your video on Doug standhope, sold me on ya!
Love the love youve been givin norm. Im subscribed, i can tell you whole heartedly ive never NOT genuinely very much liked anyone else who is a die hard norm fan. If you get that sense of humor we are best friends fr
Norm is still one of my favorite comedians. He is sorely missed.
Truly, thanks for watching man I hope you enjoyed it
It's one thing to be shocking, but it's another level of genius for the way it's delivered!
Norm is the best thing to ever happen to roasts. Pure genius.
LEGENDARY!! Love your content Nate🔥
I was actually at a function once where we had Rich Little's unfamous brother "doing comedy". He was so bad, and he wasn't bombing on purpose, trust me. However my buddy and I were in stitches, laughing our asses off at how uncomfortable it was. Unforgettable.
Jonah Hill’s set on the roast of James Franco is goated
Shout out to Coke!!
You have to mention Greg Geraldo as one of the best of all time too.
I do love Greg Giraldo
Glad I found your channel. Keep up the good work
Love your content Nate
Great stuff! Cheers!
Thank you my friend, glad you loved the video! I hope you subscribe to see more future content ❤️
Hey Nate where is your second livestream I can't find it on your channel.
Check again I just made it public again - didn’t realize I unlisted it
@@TheComedyHistorian thank you kind sir
Agreed, The Norm roast and Big Patrice roast are #1 and #2. My two favorite comedians, and they’re both gone
Your dirt nap timing was 👍..quite funny.
Norm’s performance is the most remembered roast of all time.
People that love corny dad jokes are the real comedy heads
That voice Collin was with is Kevin Brennan.
I was going to say the same.
Greg Giraldo was always great
Norm McDonald's comedy is so smart that it takes a level of intelligence to get it!
Great video. The Saget roast was the first time I ever saw Norm. I was 18, hanging out with these two stoner dudes who were 5 years older than me. They knew who Norm was and were looking forward to his set, but once he was at the podium they would just look at each other and shake their heads after every punchline, like they thought he was trying to follow the format and just failing at it. I had no context for who Norm was or why he was doing those weird jokes but I thought it was funny. I went home and looked him up. He's been my favorite comedian of all time ever since.
Norm said people would come up to him sometimes and say about the roast, "I got it!" and he would think, "What the fuck's there to get? It's grade 3 arithmetic."
My all-time favorite comedian thanks for being one of the few that understand him and making a great video.
I watched this one on debut after not having seen Norm in a bit. It reminded me why he is the best ever.
Thank you Todd, glad you enjoyed
My all time favorite Norm phrase is “On account of”😂 it really tickles me.
Honest to God, this is one of my favorite moments in all of comedy.
The amount of names on that list who are passed now baffles me. RIP Norm, Bob, Gilbert, Greg, Don and Cloris.
Also shocking, Artie Lange is still alive. Wow, what a guy.
Anything Norm, I'll watch. There'll never be another.
This is gods work, excellent video.
Thank you for the sweet comment my friend. More to come!
I love Norm, dude was 3 step ahead always.
I have been telling friends that MacDonald has the ultimate roast performance. Your video helps cement that fact.
Keep it up, brother, this is good stuff.
Another Norm one 🙌 love it 🤩
Bar none the BEST roaster of all time:MR NORM MCDONALD
😂😂😂😂😂😂 i’m sorry that was super hilarious. I have tears in my eyes
I think Norm refused to be mean to his good friend and ex-director from their movie "Dirty Work." He was a rebel, even among his peers.
The difference is that he picked on hypocrisy and people he really didn't like
Such a good troll. Norm is a legend.
A true comedy legend. RIP Norm.
"i dont think he bombed on purpose, the others just didnt get it"
No he definitely did bomb on purpose. Hes been a comedian for like 15 years minimum at the time of the roast and performed with most of the greats of his prime. He just has a bigger commitment toward making himself laugh than anyone else. The way he smiles to himself after saying "i like his neck" is all he needs, he has always had that style. No difference between the absurdity of the neck joke and talking about someones "hot ass" to him
Thank you for all the Norm videos!
Please do any video about Gilbert Gottfried, I think you would love his appearances on Howard Stern, especialy the episode where he and Artie talk about different ways to call Blackberry 😂
I think the guy in the Colin Quinn clip is Kevin Brennan. Sounds just like him. Hes a whole bag of fun in his own right.
I don’t wanna get political or anything like that but I’ll tell you this chief, this is the greatest roast in comedy history! Yeah like my Sunday roast
I feel the same way... It's amazing that actual comics didn't understand or get it. Norm roasted the roast... It was hysterical... He did the opposite of bombing... The smart and funny comics understood the joke and we're laughing their asses off... That's always been norms audience... The 1% people he cared about and he felt were funny.. by that metric he had the best set of the entire night. He most certainly didn't get on stage and try to be funny for bombing... He got on stage to make Gilbert Godfrey laugh his ass off... And to give all the other comics an opportunity to discover other things and avenues for funny. He circumvented expectations... That's funny. He found these old jokes... The jokes were funny in themselves just because of how benign and non-threatening they were... The juxtaposition of these old jokes against these horrific insults is hysterical... That's the joke... And for comics that still don't understand it... They never will and they'll never get anywhere close to the humor of Norm Macdonald
I’ve been a NM fan for many years before this roast. I watched him and thought he bombed. It wasn’t until a while later I realized he did this on purpose and then I laughed my ass off like he got me! Wow! GG’s Nrom
I saw the roast when it aired. The amount of laughs to Norm’s jokes were very low, much fewer than the other comedians. But the intensity of those few laughs were gut-busting. Only 10% or so of the audience “got it”, but boy golly gee did they get it.
One thing, I believe the Dean Martin Roast were a take on the Friars Club Roast. Norm is legend.
Andy Kaufman chuckled.
Thnx, glad somebody got it. Restored my faith in comedy and humanity😵 This world is toast, no pun in to roast, btw.
Good to see you here - we need more like you as you join PCringe, 2Lazy, Comedy Enforcement and REdBaR - the new wave will destroy what is being passed off as comedy very soon - cheers mate.
Norm will always be my favorite and imo top 5 dead or alive.I watch his part of the Saget roast at least a few times a year.
Norm totally killed it but he later said he didn't really like doing roasts because he not all about burning his friends and not really his style of comedy
I was in tears the first time I watched that. Norm is the 🐐
That dirt nap bit as absolute ass soup... BOO THIS MAN!
I definitely didn't get the roast at the time, but I also love innocuous jokes like that so I enjoyed it at the time. Having learned about the context later just makes it better.
I love the Larry the Cable guy roast too, Giraldo and DiPaolo were amazing
Thankful to be born in the time of Norm
Talk about hiding the punch line! Most people that were there didn't get how funny this was for days or weeks later. Masterclass! 👍❤️
Norm is a genius,so smart,so funny just a true goat of comedy,we miss you,ya lump of old Cole 🙏🫡😂❤😂🙏
Did you change shirts?
Yes, three times!
Close second to best roast is Charlie Sheen, if only for Patrice O'Neal's legendary off-the-cuff set.
