They tell it in the documentary, Moreno came up with the idea to set up the car on a twisty circuit prior to that weekend. The chosen venue was Binetto, not far from their premises, which used to host the Italian GT championship too.
OMG!!! Has the footage of this famous moment finally been found! Seriously this is big as it hasn’t been seen for years. How did you get hold of this??
Andrea Moda, probably most idiotic team in the history of F1, maybe even in the history of motorsport. The story of this team is one big joke yet very fascinating. And poor McCarthy, treated like shit and once send on track in broken car. Utter garbage.
ANDREA Freaking MODA. The ultimate rock bottom of all F1 teams, bar NONE. The amount of tomfoolery that this mess of a team went through is absolutely staggering. - Team principal Andrea Sassetti allegedly tied with Italian mobs and illegal trade. - Barred from competing in the first race as AM hadn't paid the deposit for new entries. - Showed up to the second race of the season with cars still being built in the garage. - Immediately fired their first two drivers (Alex Caffi and Enrico Bertaggia) on the spot after they criticized the team's lack of prep. - Screwed themselves out of a $1,000,000 sponsorship deal that Bertaggia was waving at them, as they couldn't get him back in place of Perry McCarthy. - Clocked in a lap time of 17 MINUTES in pre-quali at Monaco, courtesy of McCarthy's performance (although hindered by his mechanics and Sassetti being mad at him). - Showed up to Canada with no engines in their cars and had to borrow one from Brabham. Yes, exactly one engine. - Didn't make the French GP after failing to negotiate the truck driver blockades across the country. - Deliberately sent McCarthy out on a dry track in the wet compound in Britain. - Deliberately sent McCarthy out for quali in Hungary with 45 seconds left on the clock. - Team principal arrested by the Belgian Gendarmerie at Spa's paddock area, in damn broad daylight, for invoice forgery. We may laugh at Mastercard Lola, Life F1, Forti, and more recently; Caterham, Haas, Alpine and Kick Sauber, but none of them come remotely close to having such a long history of insane shenanigans. Andrea Moda is truly THE worst Formula 1 team to ever have been.
You forgot to add the following: - Deliberately sent McCarthy out for quality in Belgium with a broken suspension that was at risk of catastrophic failure. Imagine if that deathtrap of a mafiaoso car had failed going into Pouhon or Blanchimont?
Such a thrill - THANKS for sharing, Alan! I sould've been there behind the fences but got trapped in work back home 😭 - at least you made it to the track in time 😊 Greets from Denmark ❤
Bertrand Gachot has recalled how bad one of the crappy cars he drove was when the steering rack fell apart from the stress once the tires got up to temperature 😬.
They de facto only had one car for Moreno (who has a legendary talent to get even the worst trash to run fast). The second was just an incomplete collection of spare parts.
Well, better than going out in Belgium and trying to take Eau Rouge only to find out your broken steering component came off your teammate's car. At least here you failed before any damage could be done... Anyway Andrea Moda is the worst team in F1 history, I will stand by that. Even MasterCard Lola, which lasted for ONE RACE, at least had a modicum of sense running the team (even if MasterCard didn't let them put that sense to work). Andrea Moda had no management sense AND a car that barely functioned (Life, also a notoriously bad team, only really had the latter). I'm not sure how many other teams this may have happened to throughout history but Andrea Moda is the only team I know of that actually raced that was eventually banned by the FIA (since USF1 was banned before they even had a car to put on the grid), mostly down to Andrea Sassetti.
For me the only question is: why did this team even exist?! For the reason of pure money laundering, alright? No efforts to compete, treating their drivers like trash, not having a proper second (and, at times, first) car... Ridiculous!
The infamous Andrea Mods team, how Roberto Moreno qualified this car for a race is beyond me.
one of motorsport's greatest achievements imo
That Moreno's hit in put that thing in Monaco 1992, really seems to me more great than all Hamilton's championships together. 😮😮😮
He knew Monaco very well, whereas all the other back markers were fairly inexperienced, it was 100% Moreno that qualified, 0% car.
Sir Roberto Moreno
They tell it in the documentary,
Moreno came up with the idea to set up the car on a twisty circuit prior to that weekend. The chosen venue was Binetto, not far from their premises, which used to host the Italian GT championship too.
That must hold some kind of record for the shortest ever qualifying attempt in F1 - about 5cm over the white line! 😂
Great upload! 🙌
And yet Andretti can't get an entry....how times changed. Amazed Perry kept smiling through it all
Pretty sure teams like this are why they won’t let Andretti in. That and the prize money.
@@cyboticzombieSurely, Andretti won't be remotely as bad. It will probably be a midfield team or whatever.
@@peekaboo1575 yeah more than likely, but that’s the fia’s reasoning
@@cyboticzombieI thought it was the FIA that wanted them in, it’s FOM that don’t want them diluting the prize fund

Amazing footage. I recently listened to Perrys book on Audible. Really interesting and funny. He’s a good guy.
Alan, mate, you keep *feeding* us this content, we keep *digesting* it, baby
You just keep giving us so much rare footage. Thank you so much!
priceless footage

Perry McCarthy never was younger than 47
👍🏻😄
"Phil Collins in formula one!"
The way McCarty got threated is beyond belief. Things could have ended very very badly.
It’s ridiculous, if I’m not mistaken the team sent him out on dry tyres on a wet track at Spa.
@@DavidBirchphoto1. I think that was in Britain? Can be wrong tho.

I think McCarthy is a big Gilles Villeneuve fan.
Andrea Moda drivers HAD to be bald it seems... McCarthy showing the sense of humour he needed to be the original Top Gear "Stig"
Ah yes, back when anyone could enter F1, no questions asked. Now you can have the backing of GM and still not be allowed ...
Bertrand Gachot has recalled how bad one of the crappy cars he drove was when the steering rack fell apart from the stress once the tires got up to temperature 😬.
This makes Nissan's FWD LMP1 prototype look like a successful project by comparison.
funny back then some teams like this were 7+ seconds off the pace
didnt know sassetti spoke french...io pensavo parlasse solo marchigiano.

Andrea Moda, a team more comical if not more farcical than the risible Life two years earlier...

Total shitshow of a team
Sassetti parle Français, je me coucherai avec un information de plus que ce matin au réveil
