    The seats look fantastic!! I ended up installing soundproofing material since I had all the seats out to install the rear heated seats. It was totally worth it. Now the ride is quiet and the stereo sounds amazing!! Good luck on the body work. Sure feels like eternity since the crash.

    In January I bought the full Atacama interior out of the Volvo UK S60R press car that was featured on Top Gear in 2003. Was a bit of a mess! Split open, crusty, discoloured. I had the additional difficulty of getting the leather off the front seats and onto mine as my car is an 09 and the seats are a slightly different shape, so that required some adjustment. But then I did what you've done and had the leather coated. Found a chap who used to work for Connolly (although the Atacama hides were supplied by Bridge of Weir in Scotland, rather than Connolly). He did a phenomenal job although I was gutted to lose the white stitching, so there was only one thing for it - I went round every stitch with a scalpel and scraped off the orange coating, then painstakingly repainted each stitch with coats of dilute white fabric paint to build back the colour without it looking too white. Took about fifteen hours per seat but they look amazing! I'd also really recommend Chambers unscented beeswax balsam for the remaining semi aniline leather - really helps the colour and texture.

    great to see at least one Volvo doing well. I sadly was rear-ended yesterday and the trunk edges where the boot lid seals onto on the bottom looks like it has been bent inward and the trunk also doesn't close well. I hope it is fixable. does it need a frame puller?

    The most comfortable seats I have ever sat/driven in. Bought my s60r in Florida drove it back to Canada back in 2010. I miss those seats lol

      😂😂😂 hard pass. I did drive it to the body shop and stuck to the seats, but nothing came off on my jeans. They’re good after 24 hours to sit on and drive on. 30 days to fully cure up.

      Will give a final rundown when the build is complete. Not cheap is the answer, but DRASTICALLY less than reskinning the seats with new leather.

      I got quoted $800 to reskin the rest of leather in my crew cab ford truck (already did the driver's seat). If it's ~50% of that cost I'd love to give Fibrenew a chance.

    • @ShiftingLanes
      @ShiftingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was substantially more than that. It’s important to note I live in NJ. Reskinning of these seats, with equivalent leather, I was quoted $7000 minimum ($3000 for the hides alone). Fibrenew was less than half the cost.

      Did they change the foam at the same time? That is where you would notice the most of the damage compared to new seats. There is a car programme shown in the UK called Car SOS and they often take the seats to a place somewhere down near London for this work but they always change the foam at the same time. There is an Atacama set for sale on Ebay at the mo from a scrapyard in the UK and the whole lot is only £800, carpets, door liners seats the whole interior in that same colour, so it sounds quite expensive really to me to get that done, but it may be hard to find anything decent at a scrapyard (I think you call them breakers yards)? On the plus side, i would have gone for a few shades darker personally. I didn't realise that they were dying the leather and you could pick a shade, that kind of makes it interesting as you could have had a totally unique colour of leather. Actually just checked and they must have been sold, but i had saved them in my watch list? Maybe i was dreaming as they aren't there now. They wouldn't have been any good for you anyway as they were from a right hand drive car.

    The owners manual leather envelope is the same leather as the seats and would also give the correct colour as it sits in the glove box out of the UV light.

    Just subscribed! I've been following on and off a little while. I'm excited to see how this ride turns out :)
    I recently got a 2000 V70R in silver with very low miles in almost perfect condition, but unfortunately got into a bit of an accident just a week after with my luck. It looks very similar to this one in damage, a headlight busted and the hood bent and all. Can't wait to see both cars repaired soon! I miss having my wagon on the road :(
    It's cool to see a channel finally giving Volvo some love, I can't think of any other auto related channel that has a project R.

      @@ShiftingLanes Awesome stuff Gregson, mine are okay just the drivers seat is kinda worn a bit like yours was. Other seats are okay and the rears are great 'cause nobody ever sits back there. I remember when I was looking at R's there was a black one with that orange interior. I wasn't sold on it but yours looks fantastic! :D I can't remember what the code names for these colors were, they were all named after deserts. Gobi, Atacama and I think yours was... dammit I can't remember. LOL I think yours is that Atacama one. I'm actually wikipedia'ing these deserts trying to match them up lol. I think mine is Gobi (white).
      I wanted the black interior because it hides the wear/dirt well. But it was impossible to find. 'Er wait, no I forgot they didn't come in black. I think there was a dark blue?

    • @ShiftingLanes
      @ShiftingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha yup. Atacama is my interior color. Yea not black. Didn’t make one. It’s dark blue and it’s called Nordkap. Very cool to see a blue interior on a car.

      @youtubasoarus 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShiftingLanes Ah that's the one! Such a weird name. LOL. I only ever saw one with that interior it was at the dealer when I was getting some parts and there was another volvo owner with an R and we got talking and he showed me his car, same black exterior but he had the blue seats. Looks pretty rad.

    When are you doing the center console also what paint will you use?

    • @ShiftingLanes
      @ShiftingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Still undecided on the paint. Once the door cards, body work, and headliner are done I’ll do the console. Since there will be so much going on with the interior, no sense in painting it and getting it potentially chipped immediately after. Likely in a few months.

    only thing i dont like about the reconditioning is that the seats came from the factory without die, the Atacama is the natural color of that hide, but when you get them refurbished you have to die them a similar color. Its a shame but id still prefer that to having the ugly worn leather

    • @ShiftingLanes
      @ShiftingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      100% agree. And I love this car. I’m never selling it. Once we get to a point with a larger budget, I’ll reskin them in full. Hopefully in a few years, because it’ll cost like $7000-8000 to do it properly. This is a great stop gap alternative and only 30% that cost.
      -Gregson

    • @andrewwiggins7241
      @andrewwiggins7241 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Atacama is 100% dyed from factory. "Organic tanning, free of metal compounds, along with pure soft water and natural dyes and oils, are used to produce leather that shows off the natural characteristics of the hide. Also no two car interiors will be identical, another hallmark of quality."

    • @timschelley8737
      @timschelley8737 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewwiggins7241 Perhaps you misinterpreted the quote, which I imagine is from a Volvo brochure. I'm not implying that the Atacama leather is raw hide freshly skinned and slapped on a chair. Yes of course they have to die and condition and finish the leather to make it a soft comfortable automotive chair. That doesn't mean the orange color is from the dies however. My point is simply that the orange color does not come from dies but rather the natural color of the raw hide.

    • @andrewwiggins7241
      @andrewwiggins7241 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timschelley8737 It's dye, not die... and the color orange that you see is absolutely because of the dye. If they didn't want to enhance the hides color then no dye would be involved. They would seal and condition and leave the imperfections as they were, which they didn't do.

    • @timschelley8737
      @timschelley8737 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewwiggins7241 Andrew I suggest you do a little research into the Atacama interiors. That was the huge selling point of the color. It wasn't generic hide with orange paint on it. Volvo apparently used northern European beef aniline hide from Bridge of Weir Leather Company, using around 4 hides for each Volvo. The natural color is in fact a distinguished orange color, which they supplemented with the standard procedure dyes* and oils, just like any other automotive manufacturer, ever. Apparently only 2/10 hides passed quality inspection. I have never heard of a manufacturer "leaving imperfections" in their leather just to prove that is is in fact leather. Read up your facts, I'm simply saying that the orange color is from orange aniline hide.
