Ash! I’m American girl, age 29 living in Wales. I’m originally from Southern California and married a welsh man that I met in New Zealand! We lived in California for a little and decided on relocating to Wales. I’m in Cardiff as well! If you ever want to meet up with another American, let me know! I have a car as well, so happy to come to you. Xoxo-Samantha

I have been visiting Wales since my prep school days, as one of my London school roommates came from near Criccieth and I spent six Christmas holidays with his family (as 8000 miles was too far to travel home except for the Summer). This was in 1958. Last time I was there was 20 years ago. In my dozens of visits, I never saw laver, and I think it is a dish mostly limited to the area around Llanelli, Abertawe, and Gwyr (Gower). What I do recall are bara brith, pice ar y maen (Welsh cakes), cawl bygail (lamb stew, like the famous lob scous), tatws pum munyd (potatoes, carrots, onions, cooked in a pan with either bacon or smoked pork and seasoned water), and selsig Morgannwg (Glamorgan cheese and leek sausage w no meat). I learned Cymraeg from my schoolmate and still retain some today, well over 60 years later. You should try it.

Most Cities and big towns in the UK have markets some indoor and some outdoor even some like ours in Birkenhead near Liverpool has an indoor section and an outdoor section covered by a canopy we even have places in the UK which are known as market towns that originally just used to be a market with a small village nearby going back to like the 12 or 1300's

Cheesy chips and gravy is a favourite as it goes a little like Poutine, which I've tried in Toronto. As the cheese goes all stringy with the flavour of the gravy. Also coming to a camp site near to you in Newport soon so if you want to meet private message me.

Bara Brith is a fruit 'Tea' cake, the fruit is steeped in tea overnight, that is what gives it such a rich flavour. The spices used are traditionally 'mixed spice'. It is great you are enjoying Cardiff, and South Wales so much. If you want a new place to explore that isn't too far, try Cosmeston - it has a medieval village, and a lovely lake. Also Roath Park!!!

When my Mam made Welsh cakes she griddled half a batch with currants (never with raisins) and dusted with caster sugar and half a batch plain without currants or caster sugar dusting. We would eat the plain ones with caws Caerffili (Caerphilly cheese).

The Bara Brith is very similar to a "Bun" in Jamaica. It's baked as a loaf with raisins and various dried fruits. We typically eat it with cheese during Easter but you can get it all year. It stems from colonial times when Europeans brought it over.

Traditionally, welsh cakes do not have a filling, or a different topping (Raisins)
However, a place called "fabulous welshcakes" near cardiff castle make absolutely lush chocolate chip welsh-cakes fresh and warm, even though it's not traditional i absolutely love em, definitely better than the ones in cardiff market imo.
Also I wouldn't call welsh cakes biscuits, they're very soft and not hard unlike biscuits, and biscuits are just a general name so it's not a good term to describe something.

Ashley. I’m from S Wales, just about 10 miles from Cardiff. Wnen I was a kid my mum used to have a bakestone that was locally made. The only place you could get one was from a blacksmith, my Grandad was a miner and the blacksmith at the pit made them for everyone. Cockles and Lavabread are a required taste!
My mum used to make Bara Brith (Speckled Bread in English) and she would soak the currents overnight in plain tea. It is just a rich fruit cake.
As a cooked meal try Faggots and Peas, faggots are basically a spicy meatball but often cooked with gravy.
Chips. I worked in The Netherlands for 2 years and the default there was mayonnaise as a default on frites. I prefer salt, vinegar and tomato ketchup on my fries/chips/frites.
I hope you enjoy the rugby, the singing and the National Anthem is incredible.

my brother inherited my mam's bakestone (yes, my father made it himself when he was on the railways) and it was well seasoned. bakescones & dropscones. however, my brother 'lost' it when he moved to north wales - damn-it 😞

Pronounced “Barra Breeth” and literally means Speckled or multi-coloured bread. It is similar to fruit loaf and can be eaten cold or toasted, but generally buttered and taken with a cup of tea.

I’m Welsh and I loathe Laverbread and I like nori etc. Good welshcakes are the best. The ones in Cardiff market are more cakey, and the ones by the castle (Fabulous are more biscuity, kind of shortbready, still Welshcake texture, but wildly different recipe) I like both. But Welshcake recipes really vary throughout Wales. Like we use my nan’s recipe, and it’s usually passed down the family.

  • @ynys_mon6928
    @ynys_mon6928 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There are a lot of different recipes for Bara Brith. Nowadays it’s mostly made like a fruit cake, sometimes the dried fruit is soaked in tea first. However, I have my great-grandmother’s recipe, which is a proper yeasted fruit loaf (bara is the Welsh word for bread). It takes a lot longer to prepare, because of having to knead and rise the dough. It’s more effort, but is well worth it.
I’m from North Wales and only tried laver bread when I went on holiday to Cardiff. Laver bread is traditional to South Wales but not the North.

I’m from Cardiff. Born and bred. Grew up living roughly a mile or so from here.
The Cardiff market actually used to be the old county gaol. The numbers above the now stall above them used to be the cells. Where the clock tower is used to be the watch tower. The jail was home to criminals for more than 300 years. The womens section used to be near the entrance where the blue history plaque is. Which was later converted to the stalls and shops that are there now. The rest of it was the mens section. Where the rest of the converted stalls are. Next time you go there Ash. Look above the stalls and you’ll see the numbers I’m referring to.
For more than 100 years Cardiff market has been a gem of the capital. It was converted into a market in May 1891. So that building as been there for well over 400 years. A huge amount of history played out here and the very close by Cardiff Castle which has had a settlement on it since the days of the Romans. Both of which survived 2 world wars and the Cardiff blitz during WW2.
Yes I’m a history buff, and I love the history of my hometown

I never tasted Laver bread, even though I lived in the Rhondda, Barry, Usk and Cwmbran. We make Bara Brith here in Canada, but it looks moister than the one you had. Welsh cakes, I used to have a girl here make me some for St David's Day , her Mum was Welsh! Curry and chips (also with ketchup) is my fave , but living in Canada now, we often have gravy & fries! This video brought a tear to my eye. ! Diolch!

Black Pudding is traditionally made with pork or beef blood, small fat cubes, and a mix of cereals. The cereals are usually a mix of oatmeal and barley, with added herbs, spices, and seasoning. The exact recipe and order of mixing ingredients is a closely guarded secret that varies by region and maker. The raw mix is steamed, or boiled to cook, once it's been filled into sausage style horseshoe shape links, in a traditional skin of anmal intestine. You can also buy larger size links that are made in a filled plastic skin, usually for catering use. It can be eaten cold, as cooked during the making, or it can also be grilled or fried for use in a hot meal, it's then more like a cooked burger in texture. Up here in Yorkshire, you'll find it in many pubs and cafes as part of a mixed grill meal.

You eat the laverbread mixed with a few bits of the rest of your plate, not alone. Cut a bit of sausage/bacon and eat in one go. It should come with cockles really. You can buy fresh in Swansea Market but it's sold in tins in supermarkets and is nice cold on toast. Parsons is the brand name.

So happy you went to te Market to try all of this stuff!!! Yay!!! The black pudding has pigs blood in it, but I like white pudding better! Hehe! Love the welsh cakes! I like the different flavors they make as well as traditional, but cream and jam is great! And reminds me of a scone like this! 😁💖💖💖
Bara brith is actually very similar to a fruit cake and has a hint of orange and tea, which makes it wayyyy better and more rustic! I think this is why people are partial to it and is perfect with coffee or tea in the morning or afternoon! Mmmmm
I also don't like laver bread, but I like sushi lol. You are also right about curry, all across the UK and Ireland a curry and beer on a Friday or Saturday night is a HUGE deal like Fish and chips near the seaside! As well as a Sunday Roast! You NEED to go to Toby Carvery and see the amazing layout of meats they have and you can choose your sides all in a buffet with the meats and someone carves it for you! Or a Wetherspoons for a cheap pub lunch, however you will find a good quality Sunday roast at certain local pubs, you just need to do research on line on the stars for food quality! 😁 Hope this helps in your food adventures! Oh and I am sure I don't need to mention this, but search out the local Ice Cream vendors as their dairy in the UK is amazing! Especially Cornish Ice cream!

  • @martinwyke
    @martinwyke 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Black pudding is normally made now from pig blood, pork fat and oat or rye husk. In the past when it was farm craft it could be the blood of any farm animal. Traditionally it was cased in sheep or beef intestine but now it is usually plastic that is removed before cooking. In some areas the traditional recipes are heavily peppered/spiced and has a real pepper bite in other it is lightly spiced. Ideally it should be cooked crisp on the outside but the centre remains soft. That black pudding looked a little over cooked it me.
It can be bought in most supermarkets and traditional butchers shops in the UK.

I’ve never had a filled Welsh cake, just plain ones with a cup of tea. I suppose I’d describe them as a sweet flat scone (in the British sense). I do like chips with curry sauce but only really get that with fish and chips when I have it. I like ketchup or mayonnaise (or Nando’s perinaise) normally!

Not sure if you know but they do a fab farmers market Sunday mornings behind the millennium stadium. Also as you really enjoy nature in Newport which is not too far from Cardiff there is a wetland reserve you would need a car to get there. Laverbread is hard to come by as it's a special type of seaweed it's really good for you and yes it's the same type of seaweed as sushi. Except it's cooked with oats and bacon fat and shouldn't look like that on the plate. Secondly if your in Cardiff try what the locals call local like a Clarke's pie traditionally made in a little place in Grangetown Cardiff

Got to do traditional welsh cakes. The fruit that goes in Basra brith is soaked in tea before going in the loaf. You should have tried call which is very traditional and served upstairs in the market .

It's so great to see Wales represented for once, nice for you to show the UK is more that just London/England. You are brave for trying the Laver Bread, as a proud Welshman I couldn't think of anything more revolting to put near my mouth 🤢. Just found your channel will definitely be watching more to see Wales through your eyes. Keep up the great work

You went through all the possible chip (french fry) toppings here in the UK except for possibly the one most Brits prefer: just salt and malt vinegar (most chip shops or restaurants will have bottles of malt vinegar you can help yourself to and drizzle as much or as little as you prefer on to your chips). Give it a go :)

Always loved Welsh Cakes warm from the bakestone...but those jam and cream ones look very good and I will now have to try one next time I'm in the market. Bara Brith is made by soaking the dried fruit in tea overnight and then draining it all before it's added to the cake. It's very nice toasted - with butter, not margarine, on it. There's a fantastic spice stall in the centre of the market, directly under the clock tower, called Clancy's. Apart from their huge range of spices, they also sell teas, vegan foods and take-away hot lunches. There's also a great second-hand (pre-owned) vinyl records shop on the top tier, Kelly's, where I've bought albums from since the 1970's. It's a great and interesting 131 year old market and I'm glad you enjoyed so many of it's fine temptations and thanks (Diolch!) for showcasing it. Keep enjoying Wales! PS I'm not a fan of Laver Bread (Welsh Nori) but hats off to you for trying it! It should be mixed with oats and formed into something with the same shape and size as a Welsh Cake and then fried in bacon fat...but, for me at least, even that doesn't help as it still just tastes of seaweed - and I don't want that on an otherwise nice full fried breakfast like you had.

For future ref, the "brith" in Bara Brith rhymes with "teeth". Many Welsh people pronounce "brith" to rhyme with "myth", but they'd be mistaken :)

Welsh Cakes actually just typically have the raisins in, I suggested Bake Stones cus I knew you would like the options. Bake Stones is so popular because it has the different options where as everywhere else just has the traditional ones. My favourite are just chocolate chips, I don't like raisins myself and I'm not a fan of "filled" welsh cakes so just having the chocolate chips in them are super nice. Also I love curry on chips, it's not actually Indian related at all it's a British curry you can only normally find at chip shops. Curry or gravy for me on chips

Really looking forward to your next vlog on Saturday's game. Pity about the result but the weather was great and the atmosphere, as usual, sparkling. I particularly hope you enjoyed the buildup and after match entertainment on the streets of the city. Cardiff is one of the best cities in the world for these big sporting events, with the stadium at the heart and surrounded by bars and restaurants. With rugby, in particular, the supporters all celebrate or commiserate together no matter the result.

You must try some of the regional cheeses! Farmers markets' usually have a good selection - Stilton, Wensleydale Red Leicester, Double Gloucester, as well as the most common - Cheddar - fresh bread, butter, pickle & a good piece of cheese! ( a ploughnan's as it's sometimes called )

It is pronounced Ba'ra bree'th. Another name by which my old friend's grandmother called it, was bara cynebrwn (funeral bread), as it was often served with tea after returning from the burial. The market you visited I remember being to over 50 years ago, and it seems little changed. Every family has its own recipe for bara brith, but traditionally pice ar y maen (Welsh cakes) were just plain with raisins and a touch of mace, eaten with butter or a little local honey or lemon curd - never chocolate or anything - maybe a little caws Caerffili (cheese) and buttermilk on the side.

Ash - as a Cardiffian i was wondering if you have tried Cardiff's greatest contribution to the culinary world - "curry half 'n' half?" It's half a portion of rice with half a portion of chips served with a curry sauce.

Hmm , never had a Welsh Cake, but they look yummy. Not crazy about jams so I'd probably go for the plainer ones. lol I'm also a plain Jane...or Joe hehe..when it comes to fries/chips. Don't even like ketchup with them. Salt is good enough. Gravy might be ok. Hey you seem to be feeling better! Love that clock in the middle of the market.

Really enjoyed this vlog Ashley have been to Cardiff shopping quite a few times but never seen the market so must make the effort to go again. I love Welsh cakes but just plain with sultanas in them, usually get them from Abergavenny market as my dad used to go there regularly but sadly passed 3 weeks ago. Look forward to see more of your Welsh adventures. Stay safe.x

I've noticed, when Americans opt for tea in the UK, they tend to go for Earl Grey, or another 'posh' tea!
Most people in the UK have never ever even tasted those posh 'high-tea' drinks, & tend to stick with the popular brands, like Tetley, PG Tips, or Yorkshire Tea.
Leave the posh tea to the posh folk, & stick with the tasty stuff the rest of us drink! 😃☕
