Birds may drink from large water containers shared by cows, for example.

@@susanryan3479 From looking at the long history of this virus, it was first in poultry on farms, over decades, then the virus came in contact with water fowl, which some farmers also have. Water fowl can be migratory, which over time spread the virus. As a virus replicates, it has mutations or mistakes of replication. Some viruses replicate faster, some slower. Viruses which replicate faster have more chances for mistakes (mutations). As migrating birds die from the virus, mammals have eaten them and some are sick and die from eating these sickened birds. Then you wonder what eats the mammals, as the virus accidentally is taken in by other creatures. If you have ever gone fishing and were lucky enough to come across a large school of fish entering a smaller area, a feeding frenzy can take place, involving fish and water fowl. If an infected bird drops part of a fish, another fish may eat it. If an infected bird poops or pees in the water, a fish may accidentally ingest it, transferring the virus, too. We are getting a very wide picture of how the food chain can transfer a virus.
