So very true. What a lot of people don't understand is that if you copy your SD card to a back up hard drive and then erase the SD card the hard drive then is not a backup. It has become the "original". You have to have the two hard drives where then one is the original and the other is a backup. At that point, you really only have one backup. The best is the three, two, one system. Three copies of everything, two different mediums and one off site.
Agree its disgusting, and totally inappropriate.... all creatures deserve respect and to be treated in a humane manner. To casually turn a blind eye to cruelty is being part of the problem. Do better, Jeven.
Really helpful info! Great minds think alike. I have a very similar workflow and naming conventions. Although, I like some things you do like always copy directly from the camera card and searching in the editing system. Thanks for sharing!
I'm a professional data manager in the sf bay. you really need shotput pro, silverstack or hedge for media offloads. you can offload a card to multiple drives at the same time. separate offloads for drives wastes so much time and you can free up the card faster.
Why do you not want to transfer from hard drive to hard drive? Are you saying that for the first transfer? I’m thinking about getting a third backup so I’d be transferring from HDD to HDD.
Great tips on how to manage and organize all that footage (man does it eat up space fast). Thanks! That Name Changer app is going to be a lifesaver. I've had files restart their count already several times, so yeah, there are definitely multiple files by the same name/title in different folders that aren't really the same files, so that app will be super helpful. Thanks again. Quick question: how do you manage backups when you are traveling for an extended period? Do you still take at least 2 hard drives to keep 2 copies of all your footage?
Yeah it really does eat up space fast... I have 40x 4tb drives of footage in my office with another 40 off site as backups. When we're traveling for an extended period I carry 2x 4tb drives. I always make 2 copies before I delete the footage off my card. I've never run out of space with a 4tb.
Is there a way (deeper than file naming) for example interviews I have one hour long shot but want to document the statements … example at 15:00 he says this and at 34:34 he says that … being able to markup these moments fast and being able to access them fast in post production (maybe even able to display it in davinci resolve) … Does anyone have a solution for this? Like Keywords but a bit advanced (with timestamps) and accessible outside of the editing software too or at least accessible for multiple users (not just on my device)
Jeven Dovey you just mentioned you were planning to do a whole video on how you incorporated tagging your footage on fcpx into your whole workflow. I'd love to know how you organize your events/libraries to accomplish this easy searchability. Like your example of being able to search for drone/beach footage.
Gotcha. Yes I will probably do a video about this soon. I'm actually workin on a course right now so that will for sure be a part of that. Lots in the works right now.
@@js_filming7701 how much data are you storing for 15 a month? I did the math and cloud storage is way too expensive for the amount of data I deal with
@@JevenDovey Well. I have unlimited Storage availible at google drive for just 15€/Month. Thats 180€/Year. For that You would get a cheap 8TB drive. I have this account for less than one month now and still backed up almost 10TB. So its waaaaay more cheaper than local backups.
I like your videos, but I am little annoyed that you are becoming more and more like McKinnon. Imitation in one sense is good, but your own style is what will attract loyal viewers. I am already a loyal viewer of yours because of your content, and I think you are quite knowledgeable. When McKinnon does McKinnon, however, it is enjoyable to watch him, because he is being himself. Again, I like you, and because I am a part of your community, I felt compelled to express my honest thoughts
Thanks for your feedback! Honestly I don’t watch Peter McKinnon very much. I don’t really watch much of anything on TH-cam except for Philip deFranco for the news. I spend my time shooting and editing. Outside of TH-cam I run a full time production company. Between our social media and our company I work 10-15 hours a day. I apologize that my stuff is similar to his. I’m not trying to copy at all. My camera tutorials do well on here so I started doing more of them. Bummer when I put tons of time into a vlog and it gets 200 views yet a filmmaker tutorial will get that in the first hour. If my style is feeling like his then I guess we have similar styles. I’m just being myself on camera

the footage of the chicken being torn appart with a machete was really distracting... i can't pay attention to what you said anymore...

Yeah I use hedge.
Thanks so much for telling me the NameChanger. This saves me hours of labor to rename those Mavic and Spark files.

Good information! Keep the videos coming!
what is your go-to hard drive for on set backups?
Great tips. Many thanks! Cheers from Argentina
Do you still double backups of all your raw footage? And is this schema still the one you use? Thanks, useful years later
Yes I do. 3 copies on active projects and 2 copies for all backups
@@JevenDovey thanks boss 🙌🏻

Hey, did you know that you can change names of files from your mac. You don't need special apps or something like that!
Nice video!
Hey, did you end up making that FCPX tagging video?
No I have not yet. What kind of video are you look for on FCPX tagging?

I need a GoPro brother
I just backing up everything into google drive .....
If You have unlimited storage on drive, this is the best option I guess.
Not when you get to big amounts of data. Offline storage will still be cheaper.
@@JevenDovey Cheaper than 15€/Month? I doubt that!
