Craziest thing about this song is that there are 2 very distinct eras of Chris Cornell’s voice on display here. His youthful power in the verses and his older richness in the chorus. They ended up not releasing this one way back when as they just weren’t satisfied with it, and coming back years later they finally finished it and damn if that doesn’t show how this man aged like fine wine I don’t know what does. Fucking stellar. I miss you so much Chris.
I think they are two different takes. The chorus appears to have been recorded more recently. If you hear the Isolated vocal track you will notice a change of tone in the frequencies. In the demo version, for example, you can hear the old Cornell in the chorus.
This was originally one of the several versions of Fell on Black Days, I believe you can even find a studio take on youtube with the original chorus. Here the chorus "Cry on black rain" was newly recorded material for this release. The older Chris is a nice touch that adds a lot of darkness to the song with very little, as he had developed a mature timbre with a stirring vibrato, soulful resonance and beautiful harmonies.
@@jean-lucpicard2914 Actually I'd question that. "Black Rain" was mostly recorded for "Bad Motorfinger" album, while "Fell on Black Days" is from "Superunknown".
I truly think this is my favourite Soundgarden song and it's so quintessential of their style. Doomy, heavy, weird time signature, psychadelic intro, absolutely wailing vocals, enigmatic lyrics and such feeling. Fuck knows what Chris is going on about but it sounds meaningful and is sung so passionately. Always was and always will be my favourite musical influence.

😂 ... knows what Chris is going on about- seems to have a lot of biblical references- cut out your tongue- black day. If I could hug/save my love, meaning find one's self, will your wings/angel cover me- unless I fall/fail at my mission to be saved?
That means a lot coming from the baterist of Nirvana! Soundgarden are the true defenders of the universe. In 1994 They thwarted the mighty black hole sun on the 4th of july after being severely injured in an almost catastrophic limo wreck. This all occurred after the rise of the fabled "mailman", conqueror of planets who planned to use his evil powers to summon the mighty cthulu and take over planet earth. The heroes of Earth, Soundgarden, sacrificed there safety like suicide to defend the planet, and impressed mother Earth herself. She likes surprises. Kim Thayil tore Cthulu's fresh tendrils apart with his mighty Guild SG, Whilst Ben Shepherd summoned the mystical "spoonman" to aid Soundgarden in there fight for Earth. Chris Cornell sliced the mailman in half, then Matt Cameron impaled him with his kickstand and threw him into the Atlantic ocean where his last words were "Let me drown, this next wave will be my wave". The mailman's dead body was washed away into the ocean and never to be seen again. This day was dubbed by Chris Cornell as "The day I tried to live" and the world fell on black days as spoonman disappeared and kept his head down and Soundgarden came alive in the superunkown, waiting for the day the Earth will need them again. 16 years later, black rain began to fall on the streets of Seattle.....
They were also saved at the last minute by Spoonman, who came together with his hands, but definitely not on my wave. But then one day they tried to live, and the result was falling on black days.
This is Soundgarden at its finest.....what a smashdown of riffs, groove, and vocal madness! I love how Cornell sings the entire song in such high pitched vocal notes. These guys were out to smash it hard, and they accomplished that a thousand fold.

I know, Soundgarden was just a cut above all the rest. What a singer Chris was. Pure talent right there. That sound is coming from his face right into a microphone. Unreal!.!
I'm old and can remember when Soundgarden were totally alternative, trailing in the wake of a thousand other bands. Fuck that. This riff is a beast and the rhythm section is magnificent. By the way, they were still awesome in the old days. But again, what a riff! And what a voice!
WOW!!!! Mr Chris Cornell . what a ferocious; force of nature you are and always will be , you stand among Goliath and he whimpers , your passion is unparalled when you share your stories through your voice and music .We feel every word you bleed, cuz we bleed right along with you. And nobody can back you with such hard core precision as your fellow brothers and bandmates, the backing of a band so talented and cosmic, they , too, are untouchable. I love the trip I journey through when I am engulfed in your art. I am so grateful this carefully orchestrated thing we call life brought you all together, at the precise moment in time, to create the world 's most powerful., other-worldly rock and roll that sounds like NOBODY ELSE!

No offense to Conan O'Brien, I watched his entire talk show on TBS, just to see Soundgarden perform Black Rain, it was there first television performance since 5/18/96, when the played Pretty Noose and Burden in my Hand on SNL.
To me it's either tied with or in second place after "Cold Bitch". Love those two tunes, my favorites by SG. Wish they had made it onto Badmotorfinger.

Chris Cornell can do anything he wants vocally... And I am glad he chooses to do a wide variety of styles... Blues.. Soul... Rock.. Whatever he is awesome..
I heard the verses were actually recorded in the early 1990s while the chorus is a blend of 1990s recorded vocals + vocals recorded near song release. You can definitely tell, but it's still cool.

Those screams in the end are out of the world. What a voice man. How could you even do that without tearing up the vocal cords.
So apparently Soundgarden likes Metalocalypse. The animated versions of themselves look badass too
Chris looks like some kind of wizard xD
I know its fucking raw as fuck they sound the same as their classic stuff its unreal
Jason Kane Are you implying he's not?
clrblndmax Not anymore
@@hellsbells288 I read somewhere that this song started off during the "Badmotorfinger" era, but wasn't finished until they released it in 2010... Looked it up on Wikipedia...
I'm a heavy hip hop fan, golden era of hip hip. Wu Tang fan, but great music is just great music. Rest in Paradise Chris, music reaches those who have it n them . SALUTE TO SOUNDGARDEN ! Your voice is so powerful!👑👑👑
Black Rain....Black Sabbath.....Black Day....... when Chris died...RIP MY FRIEND
Song never fails to give me chills. RIP Chris
I know, Soundgarden was just a cut above all the rest. What a singer Chris was. Pure talent right there. That sound is coming from his face right into a microphone. Unreal!.!
These guys could write such heavy, dark yet incredibly graceful and classy tracks.
The time signature changes in this song are dope af
and theyre not aware of it, they wrote songs how they like it to be..
RIP Chris Cornell July 20, 1964,-May 17, 2017
You will be missed but NEVER forgotten!
No greater power in the vocal universe than Chris Cornell. A sonic phenomenon that I’m luck have been alive to hear. The best.
Power. Just pure power.
Metalocalypse + Soundgarden = Awesome
One of the most epic solo/riff whatever it's called of all time in my opinion 😍
Black Rain, Black Hole Sun, Fell on Black Days.
Besides black rain, how corporate of you.
,Black Saturday
Black Days III
Paint it Black
Black Sabbath
That vocal.... WOW
This is one of my favorite vocal performances EVER.
Chris is a vocal powerhouse.
Miss him every single day..
I'm old and can remember when Soundgarden were totally alternative, trailing in the wake of a thousand other bands. Fuck that. This riff is a beast and the rhythm section is magnificent. By the way, they were still awesome in the old days. But again, what a riff! And what a voice!
Sounds like 9/8
This is a song from 1992.
Burn Halfmetal I think it’s a badmotorfinger toss away they polished up later.
@@ianmason2003 It was supposed to be on BadMotorFinger but I believe the audio got effed at the time when recording. They fixed it in pro tools.
These riffs are evil! badass Chris a true Rock God RIP
Chris Cornell forever.... and ever.... RIP. What a huge, irreplaceable loss to the world.
Yes I agree a huge loss, and Chris Cornell a awesome singer,Sad he passed away May Chris Cornell RIP
one of the greatest singers ever !
He was...😭
The Best! The G.O.A.T!!!!!
Chris was able to tap into the spectrums of all generations of rock from every era... his lyrics are unmatched and his voice with Kims guitar rhthms ...
Those god like vocals were unsustainable. Thank you for your sacrifice CC!
His voice makes me cry
I saw Chris live 3 times with Soundgarden (for the reunion tour) and 2 times solo and also Chester live with LP maybe 2 or 3 month before his death, just one damned year away from Cornell's one :-(. 2 of my favourite singers and Artists. 2 great voices that went away but are still there with us everyday.
Keep safe and rocking friend and if you have time come check the new song I posted with R&O, would love your views on it : th-cam.com/video/YJqmsXd8QH4/w-d-xo.html
Probably the best Grunge song in terms of vocals... or everything else in my opinion.
my opinion also!!
that's more hard rock than grunge but yeh, vocals rock. Anyway sounrgarden is beyond music genres
Not many hit all 4 octaves. And this mofo can. Long live CC. He can make any band BETTER than they were. Lyrics vocals guitar.
Heck it's more metal than anything. Straight up Sabbath riffs and Dio vocals.
Nem33 YUP!
He sings like Dio but higher and with less powah ^^
Sometimes when I'm walking outside, this song runs through my head, I feel like I'm walking on a cloud and indestructible at the same time, I feel immortal, Chris Cornell is now immortal through this music, Rest Peacefully
Badass vocals, badass guitar, badass bass, badass drums. I think we see where this is going, plain BADASS!!!!!!
I'm back! It is 2022! Cornell's legend continues to grow! R.I.P. G.O.A.T
Terry Crews: "DETHKLOK IS SO POWERFUL THEY APPEAR IN OTHER PEOPLE’S MUSIC VIDEOS!"
Soundgarden is so powerful they appear in other people's TV shows
Exactly.. i knew i saw him somewhere
Nathan looked young
Where ever you are Chris Cornell; Thank you for the Music for 3 decades. You & Gregg Allman left within days of ea other; 2 of my favs I thought we'd ride this life out old watching grand kids grow; Where ever you are bro; Thanks for the MUSIC. I'll Keep Sharing it & the message it tells. 6/25/17
Amazing Riff
We’re still here , still listening, still mourning.
Total rock God. Now in heaven.
He was a musical genius!! You can feel his voice through your entire body..sends chills up the spine!
I'm just sick to hear he passed...just sick. Loved Chris and Soundgarden...just RIP man...
No offense to Conan O'Brien, I watched his entire talk show on TBS, just to see Soundgarden perform Black Rain, it was there first television performance since 5/18/96, when the played Pretty Noose and Burden in my Hand on SNL.
That voice just guarantees goosebumps. Sick as hell! 💀
To me Black Rain is a Top 5 Soundgarden song. If not Top 10.
loveharrydaily absolutely
That should read if not top ten, then top 5 bro. Classic
Yeah, absolutely
To me it's either tied with or in second place after "Cold Bitch". Love those two tunes, my favorites by SG. Wish they had made it onto Badmotorfinger.
@@sacblazer @loveharrydaily you are both wrong.. you're saying the same thing but with phrases moved around which doesn't change the meaning at all.
It should be "Black rain is a top 10 soundgarden song, if not top 5".
Chris and Robert Plant are really top teir. Chris reminds me of a fuller plant. Both excellent singers.
they are just two different gods among humans
I miss Chris every time I hear someone with half-assed vocal, which is daily. He sang his ass off, every album & every song. Nothing like him. RIP to the best ever.
What other song could rock so hard with drum parts going from 9/4, 8/4, 10/4, 6/4 and 4/4.🤘🤘🤘
May 2020. Still legends.
No matter the year, that will never change. Only grow stronger.
They are eternal legends! 🤘🏽❤️
Simple riff but savagely brutal in the execution with the vocal
"Can't stutter when your talking with your eyes"
Epic lines in rock lyrics 🤘🔥
Can’t stutter when you’re talking with your eyes
You can’t stutter when you’re talking with your eyes... lyrical genius strikes again. CC you remain unparalleled...❤️❤️❤️
I wish that jam at the end was a full song.
Two of my favorite things, Chris Cornell and Metalocalypse!!!!! \m/
Jesus Soundgarden, can you stop killing it for just a second or what?
This is undeniably the best music video I've ever seen.
I was sooo excited when they released this song after the reunion. The sound, lyrics, everything in this song is pure Soundgarden.
RIP to a Seattle King.
Soundgarden is soooo amazing that this song, as amazing as it is, was considered a ‘bside. Hell, the songs they throw away are even amazing. BR is one of my favourites.
Frickin great tune and video … wow … such an incredible vocal performance … nobody sings like you anymore Chris … RIP
what a voice... R.I.P
Chris Cornell can do anything he wants vocally... And I am glad he chooses to do a wide variety of styles... Blues.. Soul... Rock.. Whatever he is awesome..
R.I.P. Chris Cornel best singer & songwriter 🤘💘
Such a brutal riff. Love SG forever.
Esse timbre da guitarra do Kim Thaiyl, é fenomenal.
Boa ou seja a banda é sensacional 👏👏👏😉
Yes I agree kim thaiyl a awesome guitar player sound Garden a awesome group
So glad we have Chris's musical legacy. Bless his beautiful soul
That kid is actually playing Black Rain on GH Warriors of Rock.
OMG!!! RLY????...
Well, you're easily amazed.
PiXtraLrg
Lmao I read his comment in the most sarcastic tone
I was playing it and that's how I found this song this morning
That's a nice detail, it's even the same guitar controller that came with the game.
I heard the verses were actually recorded in the early 1990s while the chorus is a blend of 1990s recorded vocals + vocals recorded near song release. You can definitely tell, but it's still cool.
Ive always looked for a way to say this but Chris did it perfectly. "Cant stutter when your talking with your eyes"
Never met him but I felt close to him listening to him my whole life. Was looking forward to a few more decades of great songs. RIP Brother.
BOOM!! straight in with that vocal. Blew my hat off!!! Awesome... What a legacy. RIP sir
One of their best songs. Still a great song after all these years. Lot of their songs are great but I keep playing this one.
Definitively my favourite CC vocal. It embodies the power, melody and sheer wailing awesomeness of what made him the worlds greatest rock/metal vocalist. Plus, only Soundgarden feel so at home in 9/8. The loss is still felt even greater with each day.
favourite soundgarden song by far.
favourite song by far
holy shit ive listened to it thousands of times and I never get bored of it, love everything about it
holy shit every day i find more reasons to love Brendon Small and reminders of how Soundgarden kicks ass!
never get tired of this song
