In 1992 I woke up, going to the first day of my freshman year of high school. While eating breakfast this song came on MTV. I'm 45 now and I still remember this like yesterday. Time is terrifying.
Watching music videos before school was my favorite thing. Even with sings that I didn't like sometimes had amusing videos. I was the last generation to appreciate this . I was 5 when this came out , loved this band
Dig Up Dem Bones was a bad-ass album- I used to think Seattle Rock was uh not that good, but, it's actually bad-assed! Too bad most of the legends passed on, (I think the only Seattle Rock band that's still survivin' is Eddie Vedder, of Pearl Jam..)
i turn 30 in august. time is very very terrifying indeed. i feel like it was just yesterday that i found out layne passed. i was 9 years old.
im 26 years old and its my first time listening to this lol
@@itzapril5321 enjoy your 20s they go quick
When I was 18, we said goodbye to Layne, and I was really sad. I read that layne had a foundation made in his name. I wrote a small letter to them, explaining how much Layne meant to all of us, and a lot of our youth struggles with drugs, depression, etc. I wrote that I was an addict too. Since I was 15. I also sent $1. I was definitely not expecting a letter written back to me from Layne's mom. Her name is Nancy McCullum, and she runs the foundation. She sent me a poster of aic from the Moore Theater, some stickers, and in solemn disbelief, the program from Laynes celebration of life (or funeral) The program had the names Chris Cornell, Mark Lanagan from Screaming Trees, and Nancy and Ann Wilson from Heart. Chris Cornell and Heart did a cover of "Ring them Bells" written by Bob Dylan, and Mark Lanagan read a poem Layne had written. Anyway, I never thought that sending $1 to Laynes foundation would merit anything! Nancy, Laynes mom said encouraging words to me in regards to my opiate dependency. After years of on again off again substance abuse, I'm finally 150 days sober. It gets better. Thank you Nancy, Laynes mom, for the awesome keepsakes, and for giving birth and raising my favorite singer. God bless and take life one day at a time.
Very happy to listen that you're sober now bro. And it was such a nice gesture from his mother.
Keep it up man ! Life can be cruel , but heads up , life is an open road . Stay safe !
*Congratulations*
I'd love to hear the poem?
Awesome share. All the best
Sounds like a very cool family to be honest! What an amazing impact on music he made!

The real sadness behind this song is so profound. Layne wore sunglasses to mask his highness while filming this music video. The song is well-known to be written about close friend and fellow grunge frontman Andrew Wood who died from a heroin overdose. It is a direct embodiment of the feeling of addiction and succumbing to this disease wondering if its ever too late to turn back. Jerry Cantrell wrote it who probably also had his fair share of these struggles.
Layne's performance in this song is so captivating because he is walking the exact path he is singing about, battling the same battle that his friend did and lost. Of course, Layne's passing was heartbreaking and difficult for those around him who saw his decline and wanted to help. So sad that addiction and depression causes you to isolate and mainly hang with other addicts just like what happened with Kurt and Mike Starr. Mike was supposedly the last person to see Layne alive, and after a failed attempt to send him to the hospital, got high himself and blacked out for 2 weeks. Imagine being at rock bottom and your only company are your lifetime friends whose only common ground is being stuck at rock bottom. Mike was one of the only people to stay in touch with Layne, and him the only AiC member he kept in touch with after he was kicked out of the band, because of their shared habit. I'm sure they both wanted each other to get out of there for their sake.
Makes me very mournful for all the talent and their amazing souls that were lost to addiction or depression. Mental health is no joke, it can affect you no matter how successful or unsuccessful you are. Long live those that have overcome these struggles and are still rockin'.
Beautifully written. Thank you.
Yes !! Lost my son as well 😢
I always ask myself, did these musicians fall into this chemical trap because of the musical lifestyle…or did they fall into the trap/ rut long before? As tragic as it is either way… they made their choices… 😢
@@Derandcam Before. I lived in Seattle in the 90's and worked at Deja Vu ( 1st &Pike strip club) where they'd come in a lot. The drug scene was huge and I think that partly it's the depressing weather. Staying in a lot. It was an incredible time, but when Andrew Wood passed things took a dark turn. The music they put out was from their core, and It still blows me away.
Temple of the Dog was also born from the tragic death of Andrew Wood. GREAT ALBUM, some of Chris's best music. FYI.
Man, Laynes voice was one of the best rock voices ever in my opinion.
thats not an opinion, thats a fact :D
Thee best 🙏
When it comes to the big 4 of grunge. I hands down say Layne is the best, but I know Chris and Eddie have their die hard fans and I respect that. And then Kurt... well... he may not have have the strongest voice but everyone loves him for the path he paved.
@@thornstrikesback what about Scott Weiland?
@@thornstrikesback I think Layne and Kurt are the best...Layne above Kurt for sure! But Kurt was good because he didn't try to be technical or perfect and it worked.
No one will ever believe this, but it is true. When I was 19 years old I wrote endless fan mail to this band. I covered the outside of my letters with art work, made all sorts of jokes using the lyrics of their songs. Even suggested they lift some weights.
About 1 month later I received an envelope in the mail from the band. They all wrote personalized notes to me - every single member of the group. Layne responded to me, writing "What?! You didn't know? I'm doing it for the kids!" They all took a picture flexing, joking back to my comment about hitting the gym.
Through many moves I believe I lost all of those letters. Someday, I hope they turn up in some box I have not looked in or uncovered so that I can share them with everyone else who loved this band. They were the real deal. All of them took the time to write a lonely kid who idolized them and hung on every lyric just to get through the day. It still amazes me that they took the time to make such a personal connection with me. I hope this story adds even more love to those AIC fans who felt the same way I did when I wrote the band. They truly cared about their fans.
Seth Elsom you couldn't have picked a better band I'll tell you I hope you get those letters back
Woo Hoo! ❤️
Back then I'm sure they got high and went through letters like people do today with comments and emails. I'm sure your letters stood out and they appreciated the effort. If you can make a person laugh it means a lot.
I believe it. I live in the Seattle area and my uncle was a nurse in the emergency room of Highline Community Hospital in the mid and late 90s. Mike Starr came into the ER for a heroin overdose one night. My uncle and the crew helped him that night and Mike autographed a Dirt CD and wrote "thank you for saving my life" on it. Unfortunately I think my uncle has lost the CD over the years and after several moves, just like you lost your letters from the band. A female coworker who is still friends with my uncle, likes to remind us that she had to take out Starr's nipple rings before the doctors started working on him.
@Seth Elsom You wrote the name of the band!?
4 people came together and created quite honestly one of the greatest songs ever. Period.
And it is a crime that they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall.

Dude, when I was 17, back in 2005, I've been listening to The Doors and no one gave a fuck. It's the same now. Music is music, and people're still listening to Mozart and Bach, nevermind that they've been dead for centuries.

I grew up watching MTV, rocking out. I was pretty young when grunge was peaking, so it took me awhile to truly appreciate some of those bands. Here today, the more I go back and rediscover alice in chains, the more I love them!! Such an incredible band. Layne had one of the most powerful and haunting, beautiful voices of all time. And Jerry Cantrell is in my opinion criminally underrated!

I started college in 1992 at 28 years old. I would listen to KFMX on my 20 minute drive to Texas Tech and had never heard of AIC, but the DJ played them a lot and it didn’t take long to become a huge fan! Been a fan ever since and I’m about to turn 60. Just watched this video three times in a row.... This video made me realize just how great Layne was..he is one of the best ever...no one can lay it out there like him....
Cantrell's guitar along his vocals and Staley's are something else. Also, that rhythm section of Kinney and Starr. This was a great lineup that I never got to see in person.
the big harmony vocals was pretty new with this style. the layered vocal harmonys made it sound so haunting and just fuckin rocking.

Simply the best song of the era. Never got the props it deserved.
Definitely one of my favorites, probably is my favorite from them anyways.
@@thearmourboy3254this and rooster are probably their best songs. Will admit not as much as a fan of music from this generation but those are good songs. The guitar in the rooster can make you cry. Down in a hole alright too.
Surprised to hear somebody say this. Mtv practically had it on a continuous loop when it was released. It was such a stand out song and video.. one for it breaking a lot of molds of what a rock song could be, a progression that reaches it's titled lyrics at the end and no guitar solo. The video was also refreshing as the long hair metal band mold was breaking down. It took a second to get used to Laynes new look with the slicked back short hair and sunglasses but it was really awesome. I don't know if I agree that it never got the props.. Everyone loved this song.

One of the first songs to kick off the popularity of the 90's grunge era! Classic!
Takes me back to ninth grade. I was a stereotypical teenager, sitting in the dark corner of my messed up room, not finding an emotion to express. I was so lost, so lost and my mental health was... gosh those damned days!! I wished the ground swallowed me and couldn’t even cry despite trying so hard. My phone was beside me with my playlist on shuffle, so that I feel something, I was desperate to feel something. Hours passed by, it was getting darker outside. What a failure am I, what a waste, darn it those were dark days. At one point I threw the phone towards the wall, fortunately it fell on the pile of messed up clothes and somehow, fate introduced me to alice in chains. This was the song that began to play, this epic bassline, the haunted guitar, epic drums, and well no words to describe Layne and Jerry. And i don’t know how, all the emotions wanted to burst out of me and I cried for hours with this song on loop. No one saw how miserable I was that night, except for dear Layne, Jerry, Starr, Sean. Life went on. It would still go on if I died, just these words would never be expressed. Depression, separation, violence, heartbreak, failure whatever, you have to face one of them. Just hold on, like I did, with Layne, Chris, Kurt, Eddy, Chester beside me. Wish I could go back and save Layne, and tell him the 'thanks for saving my life' that thousands of people like me owe to him. A man who died before my existence, saved me. Thanks to youtube I stumbled upon AIC once again. Love these guys sooo damn much!

Alice in Chains have never been "grunge". They've always been hard rock. Same with Soundgarden. "Grunge" isn't really a genre, just a description, according to Mark Arm, who supposedly came up with the term (he says he didn't though, as he said the whole idea came from Australia in the 80's). "Grunge" was a ploy to try to box bands into a marketable genre.

Apart from Love Song. It was made bad on purpose though to be fair
Ain't that the truth.
Literally.
Still sounds as good as it did in the 90s
I miss you Layne.
Can i ask how he died? I recently got into them
@@sergio178 OD. Speedball if I remember correctly
@@sergio178 Layne wasted away over a long period of time using heroin. Found dead in his apartment after sequestering himself.
Hi
Heroin, it kills everyone who tries it eventually.
I was 12 in 1992 and completely hooked on Nirvana. Never listened to AiC. Now 32 year plus I stumbled on this Masterpiece. It's 2 weeks already and I can't stop listening to it at least 20 times a day. I don't even think I would embrace the message encrypted in this song then. Now being 44 and scarred by many wrong paths I've taken this song hits me very hard. It literally talks to me...
I'm 68 and didn't decide that I love the Seattle grunge sound till last year. This video of Would? is what got it started. The power in Layne's voice gave me chills... I do love all the bands but AIC in the Layne era...I really don't have words...my favorite. Have you watched the MTV unplugged version of this? I can't help but cry. Peace. 🙏
@@stevencopley5487 It's very honest and unpretentious music. It's fascinating how much emotion he could pack into his singing. It gives me goosebumps.
This is a underrated timeless masterpiece
Great changes and breakdown
Underrated? Nah
@@mikimaus358 UNDERFUCKINRATED NEVER!!!!!?? SAYS WHO MIKE?? MALADYMAYHEM??
The bassline at the beginning and the base drum roll at 0:09. The vocals, the haunting screech of the guitar. Everything about this song is art.
this is a floor tom not a bass drum, yet I see what you mean \m/
the ethereal harmonies going on between mike and jerry/jerry & layne and the tom dominate drum riff all joined in and made an absolute masterpiece and a wonderful tribute to Andrew Wood.

Same guy played the bass opening to Ozzy's "No More Tears"
The perfect song ...from beginning to end....lyrics , music, vocals...amazing !
that bass intro always gives me the chills.
My 'walk up song' if I ever make the big leagues.
YES
For me its every single guitar in this song, but the bass is AMAZING.
@@elido6199 for me its the bass & vocals
That's some chunky bass for sure
I've liked this band for many years, but don't know their catalogue that well...never heard this one until now. Agreed...Layne's voice is powerhouse and this song is amazing. I'm a bit older than most of you here at 71. Good music is simply just that. At any age!
Keep rocking man
Layne, you have been gone for 22 years, but I am VERY grateful to you for your voice, your music, it often saves me a lot. Just thank you, an undeniable legend. ❤
"If I would, could you?"
One of the most haunting ways to close out an album, goddamn
Arcanine452 Amen
What does he mean by that? Does he mean asking him would you do that...and he got offended or If I would do it... could you do it too?
@@cookiegiver6044 I've always thought he aimed it at people who thought they never even COULD resort to using drugs in the self-destructive way Layne did. If he himself very willingly WOULD, maybe it's possible you COULD, too. But I don't know.
@@fonkeyj man that was nice! Thanks for letting me know of your perspective really interesting
@@cookiegiver6044 this final question means "if people had given him more help, would he have accepted it?" and "if becoming addicted to heroin happened to him, could it happen to you too?"
Layne’s voice is something else
Yes!!
Yeahhhh
I often wondered where he learned to sing like that ... MASSIVE power in his voice, tremolo like a fine violinist, adding grit where he wanted it.
@@thomascoolberth2648 That’s so perfectly descriptive of Layne’s insanely powerful voice. Only Chris Cornell had that same sort of power, range, and ability to really go light or heavy, gritty or smooth.
💛
One of the best rock songs ever!!
Best song of the 90s nothing comes close
the sad news of chris cornell brought me here...remembering the good times...so many legends gone way too early...so many awesome tunes...R.I.P chris,layne,kurt...
kevin hopkins - I can't wrap my head around Chris Cornells passing! All the Great ones are gone now, the soundtrack of my life....😥
At least Vedder still here...
Chernobog the last of the great
R.I.P and Scott
Chernobog they better put fuckin 24/7 surveillance on him
Cantrell was the Heart and Mind of AIC, but Staley was the Soul.
wow, so deep, AMEN
+Daniel Toma you got that damn right dude................
+Daniel Toma Well said dude!! :)
+Daniel Toma PERFECT.
+Daniel Toma I couldn't have said it better...or ....prolly...as well. Thanks.
We can only imagine the music we missed with Layne's death, such a powerful and unique voice. You are missed, brother...
We can't let alice in chaines fade away every time we can call into the radio stations. we have to recommend playing alice in chains, especially "would"
I don’t even listen to rock this song is hard as hell
mike's bassline in this song sends me into another galaxy i swear
Happy 53rd birthday Layne, Grunge god.🤘🖤🤘🖤
courtney did it

@@powerofthetime Pretty cool dude.

Layne is the best🤘🏽🖤
Don't forget about Mike Starr
My favorite band of ALL TIME.
God i love this band. RIP Layne
The power of his vocals, especially after the guitar solo cannot be denied.
EPIC
One of the best grunge songs ever. Never gets old.
true
Great point-I never get tired of it.
Nirvana >>> Pearl jam > Alice in chains
+Chuck Samp YEAH!!!
Why even compare those bands??
A decade ago, a distant cousin of mine overcame through excruciating effort a heroin addiction that would’ve killed him. He had family here and there to help him along, but for the most part he was on his own throughout the process. “Would?” is his favorite song.
I remember asking him once at a family gathering why he listened to it so often. He told me he uses it to scare himself straight.
This song transports me to a place and time that I will forever long for! I don't just hear the music, it soaks into my soul and makes me whole.
"This is fly now." So true. AIC were way ahead of their time.
the powerful singing is incredible. the passion in his voice is unbelievable
Still completely relevant and always will be.
Can't believe I'm 61 and still enjoying the Hell out of this song. lol Great music is timeless.
Jerry is the musical genius in AIC, extremely talented musician especially with chord progressions, this song is just a haunting dark masterpiece
I'm 42 and this song still gives me chills! They don't make bands like this anymore....
No they don’t
They hardly make bands anymore
I'm 23 and I agree
61 and couldn't agree more! 😢
Have you heard tool?
