- Swap all the things! Build all the things! Do all the things! Mike refuses to drive boring stock cars... and we can understand why... they are boring! Instead, he builds his cars into his perfect version of them. For example, this Mercedes Benz Unimog, a vehicle originally built to basically be a military do all tractor, turned into Mikes version of the perfect overlander, loaded with little touches that all

I would have absolutely no use for this vehicle.. and cannot think of a truck that I want more. Beautiful work!
Dude, you got already rust under the paint, wth!
Mike Day is literally driving his dreams.. and probably everyone else's if I'm honest.
We all envy Mike and his mad skills. He has more builds in the works.
USB because you know Modern lol. Great job Mike. Absolutely love it
He thinks of everything.
As a german kid i would never understand why my father would claim a Unimog as his "Dreamcar", roughly 20 years later i finally understand why.
As a Dutch kid with my parents on vacation by car to Italy, I saw a lot of Unimogs in Germany and Austria, then I already knew it was my "Dreamcar".
Same for me my father is talking about the Unimog he drove while he was in the Army all the time
If you haven't seen a 1960s or 70s sprinter with the roll up door in the back you can put Unimog drivetrains on them
Mercedes made the only million-mile motor with the om647 and yet you can hardly find any videos or anything about that engine
Mike that thing is nuts! You should put the golf on the bed and get some pics.
Cleverest bed in the world. Take that
rambox
You don't normally have to hold that lever for the diff locks to stay engaged, so yours was apparently just broken. At any rate, kudos for the nice build!
Mad Mike for the win. He needs a Motortrend show. I'd watch.
In Germany we sometimes say "Universal-Motor-Gerät" instead of Unimog. And we think it´s beautiful.
Dude back home north of Chicago had one of these. He towed me out of snow a couple times. It was truly a work of art and it could pull a house I'm sure.
My first viewing of this channel and I'm impressed. From video production standards and quality, to great choice of subject matter. Kudo's to all who worked on this production. I subscribed immediately.
Nice what you have done. I drove this model during my service in the Swiss army.
I have a 73 Unimog 406, one heck of a machine. The thing is a beast also for anyone new to Unimogs don't be scared when you see a ton of levers where the gearshifter is even if you fu*k up it won't break.
ECS Tuning thank you for the heart
The simplicity, practicality, capability and aesthetic quality of this build is next-level! It doesn't get much cooler.
Your mounting "step" on the rim could be used to assist when stuck ... wrap rope/strap around that protuberant and other side around a tree big rock , engage gear and the turning of the wheel "winches" in the rope/strap helping pull you out of the mud ... fantastic creation! 👌
sneeki breeki!!
Such a sweet rig, it was cool to see it tearing around in the snow in the winter beaters episode.
The hand-throttle is to negotiate extreme off-road obstacles at slower than walking speed, in particular steep climbs and descents. I learned driving on one of these in the military. Awesome trucks. Ours were five cylinders petrol.
The 404 was designed with a 6 cylinder 2.2 litre motor as standard. Often mistaken as a 5 cylinder because the no.6 sparkplug is hidden under the cab scuttle. Absolute sod to change.
@@davidray6762 Thanks. I stand corrected. They were indeed 6 cyl petrol, and a pleasure to drive, especially totally stripped down with a couple of GPMGs and a Point 50 mounted at the back, a real “battle-wagon”. In 1979, we used them as the “red side” (actually in NATO, it used to be coded “orange”) in a full training exercise against the 82nd ABN dropped in eastern Belgium, exactly where their forefathers defeated the Germans but with great losses during the cruel winter 1944.
Smashing Unimog, a friend had a Unimog 404 with the 2.2lt petrol engine and that would get to 65mph as the engine revved higher than a diesel, he changed it for the 2.8lt version which made it a bit faster but acceleration was a lot better, he then fitted the Unimog crawler box to it which gave it two more gears below first which made a huge difference offroad but it was a thirsty truck.
Awesome fab skills! I agree... you never stop learning. Having nearly finished a complete rebuild on a '88 Toyota Truck 4x4, it turned out very well overall. But if I had to do it again with the knowledge I now have, I'd tackle it differently.
Perhaps my next project will be a Unimog... Always loved these trucks.
Again, awesome job!!!
I don't usually make it a point to comment, but this was incredible. Every sentence from Mike conveyed some sort of headache inducing fabrication.
You chose the right video to comment on. PS. Mike tackles these headache inducing obstacles with horrifying ease.
Dudeeeeeee. This is sick. Btw, your tailgates ingenious. Such a useful vehicle.
That thing is absolutely gorgeous!
The ultimate off road vehicle. Where an Unimog can't go, no vehicle would go.
Would've been awesome to see those portals tackle an offroad trail or obstacle. Maybe in a different episode?
that is a great idea for tthe half doors !!!!! love it never saw anyone do it before,, fantastic build i have always needed a unimog in my life and yours looks perfect!!!!!
Looks amazing, I see a lot of hours into it. The only thing is the 4 wheel drive in Lockers. You don't have to hold it in place to have used it, lol. It just wasn't adjusted correctly. I have wheeled a ton with mine full locked. I'm on my 3rd 404 and they all worked the same.
that oil bath air filter is used on every diesel tractor that's like pre 95. so idd assume they are safe 😊
"Assume" all you want. Technology advances for a reason. Air filters are more effective at all engine speeds while oil bath filters are not. As stated in the video, there is also the possibility that if you accidentally overfilled or used too light weight of an oil you could definitely cause a runaway engine scenario.
@@Knuck3ls1 they advanced to sell more filters 😂 those oil bath filters never went bad. They can be left alone for 10-15 years and still work perfect :p
Magnificent Mog mate! It's my lottery win vehicle. The orange is the perfect colour for this as well. All best from the UK.
Unimog a Legend by it`s own right.
Great video and great explanation about what you did. This came out really well - a great project with a great end product - wish I had your talent. Good job man…! All the way from South Africa.
E28 M5 parts car...words I never thought I'd hear. Beautiful Unimog, thanks for showing it around. Love the details.
I have a 1974 404 and can really appreciate the amount of work you put into yours!
The UNIversale MOtor Gerät, is the best Gerät ...for everything!
Great ideas with the bed sides for ramps and the door stowage. I was planing to make pockets on the bed sides and on the frame and have short pipe sections that fit in them to widen the bead and lengthen it for full weight capacity. Just the same as the cables you are using, but really strong
I’ve been for a ride in this thing and let me tell you it is so smooth and that ornate in person is so cool
Outstanding job restoring and improving your Unimog.
Nice build. I like the idea of the turbo diesel transplant. I used to work on these things for a guy that imported and resold them. We used to get 2,8 liter gas engines out of regular sedans and drop that in place of the little motors. Twin carb version could be good for 160 or so hp. Worked pretty well.
So Cool! Very clever box design. Always wanted an Unimog. Now I shall check the classifieds!
You don't need to hold the locker lever, or at least you aren't SUPPOSED to have to hold it. Detent will take care of that if the mechanical linkage is adjusted correctly. As the owner of a handfull of 404's I can appreciate all the work you put into it, thanks for sharing! Is the steering box you put in ported for a hydraulic assist, or just running off the box itself?
Wow, the amount of work that went into this is incredible. Great job, it's amazing!
This guy is a true car enthusiast!
No Doubt.
Talking about it being slow, don't forget that the Unimog was supposed to be a tractor that can also go on the road as a truck.
Unimog means "Universal Motorized Tool" in German.
They don't need to be fast, their point is to work, power attachments and be easy to fix if they break.
(Also please take care of the rust out back)
Always loved the unimogs but this one is a pure beauty !
Fantasticc.....!!! Que Lindo Torito..!!..ji ji ji ji.....Gracias por Compartir...Muy Bien Gusto...Saludosss
I still have my matchbox unimog from 50 years ago and I thought it was the coolest freaking machine in the world
Nice job with the doors, the brackets and the other mods in detail.
Nicely done, regards from the UK !
saw his V8 Golf on Donut Media. Bro you're a wizard
Check out our Summer Drift Series. We have 2 video featuring his MK 3 in detail: bit.ly/2RWgQAQ
Beautiful . . . I used to own an Ex Military Unimog in South Africa, goes any where really and dependable !!!
Badass vehicle...Unimogs are sick but with the 5 Cylinder Turbodiesel and the mogs made, this one is totally usable as a fun truck instead of a work tool. I would love to have this thing. Solid build.
We drool over it everyday.
Innovative and well thought out build. Saw your mk3 build with Larry Chen then came here. That mk2 is sweet.
Wow! I owned two 404s when I lived in Roswell, NM. Sold them to a collector in Nebraska. Wish I still had them....
This is the only hot-rodded Unimog that I have come across so far. I drove a 404 when I was in the army, and that was quite some time ago.
What strikes me is that the wheelbase looks a little odd. Did you stretch it?
If the engine is shot, you have no alternative than to swap it, of course, but I liked the original 82 horse thing. It was a bit of a guzzler, though.
What I like best about your project is the paint job. Looks amazing.
To make the side tailgate act as a ramp is ingenious and then same to store the doors.
Needs a truck camper to be 150% awesome ! But its 100% awesome as it stands ! Nice work .
Mike's tent fits perfectly on the bed.
I really like this. I’ve always liked them and thought they were interesting. This thing just brings my want to the next level.
The only thing in the world that can beat a Unimog is another Unimog!
Very impressive. Wish I had half your skill.
You make me miss my Mog, I watch it from time to time on TH-cam @unimog wall climb.
It's beautiful, amazing work pulling it together.
Such a clean shop
actor, voice actor, comedian, screenwriter, film producer, musician AND MECHANIC !? you mr Adam Sandler is the best...
Very cool. I always liked the unimog early designs
I see that Sweet Mfg power-steering pump!
If I had your skill and money, I would have one just like it, very nice.
It's the skill.
This would be a great candidate for the R2.8 Cummins!
Dude is a genius
Scott Pessetto this is just a small glimpse into his genius
Nice Build ! ... you forget the 8 speed mod
Awesome Vehicle, nicer job I think a roll bar might be nice.
nice nice...cleanest mog for sure. good job...jealous.
Unimog 404 is my dream vehicle, to me it is most beautiful vehicle ever made.
I wish I own double cab with six wheels (6×6), if possible back exle can half turn to opposite direction to front one.
This beautiful orange pumpkin was less than $2,200 when first acquired? Gorgeous machine!
This is insane! The dude rocks
Yes, yes he does. Check out his other builds on our channel. His swapped MK3 is insane.
Great Unimog. Thank you for sharing
Wow beautiful work. Great job.
Very Cool. I love Unimogs.
Unimogs are awesome
can I ask how you converted to air locking the diffs? and does it work well, disengage etc
lovely build
Gary
Well done Mike, looks amazing 👍🇬🇧
Best video I’ve seen in awhile. Keep it up!!
Glad you liked it! Check out some of Mike's other build videos!
Awesome Mate , apriciated from Latvia 10/10
Brilliant inventiveness, well done
You dont need to hold it for the locker. Somethings wrong if that's the case lol. Nice 404 though bud!
Absolutely sick dreamy build bro!
You don’t have to hold it for the lockers to stay engaged 🤣😂
great car, what a clever improvements
I saw unimog yesterday and it's badass and my idea is unimog tow truck
Awesome Build!
Rich Dunlap here . I'm orig. from Ohio and saw the ohio plate on the mog Where ya from? I have had 4 unimogs over the last 20 years and the 404 was the first and loved it . Mane was the 2 door and i converted it to the 4 door version whic they made a version of mostly for training the other 3 mogs were the big Diesel version . you have a great lookn truck Enjoy Id send ya a pic of the 4 door 404 but don't see a way to doo it on here
Subscribed based on this video alone!
Shannon Sofield Thanks man! Check out some of out other videos!
Great build!
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought to myself "Cool... new cars released in GTA V."
I grew up on a farm. One day my father shows up with a Mog 404 ..and says "Meet your new Car/Farm truck". after wrecking my 70 Chevelle SS. I HATED IT, ALWAYS DID !!! ....until i didn't have it anymore!!! I mean, what the meaning of having the cock and balls of a bull moose if you can't swing'um around ...am I right?
Not a day goes by that I don't KICK MYSELF for ever letting that go, and the drill attachment (post hole digger).
Couple of years ago I saw my Mog, all gussied up, looking good and turning every head ! Forget the vanity of it now GIVE ME THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB!!!
Signed: FOOL FOR LIFE !!
Nice production of an awesome vehicle... Just curious... what is the cursing speed...
A nice cruising speed is 25-35. Top speed is 65
A dream!
finaly a build that is not a 1000000000hp twinturbo, just a normal very convenient truck
What a fun project (truck / jeep) 👍👍
Respect. Dude that’s so impressive. How do you have the patience to follow that through??
I love that car!
In the Bundeswehr I drove an original 59 Unimog and this was the only good thing about the military. You really did great with that car. Can I ask about the fuel consumption? The old one with a big box on the back used about 10mpg (23l/100km)
Aber nen 404 suchst du nicht zufällig? th-cam.com/video/s9Kwbq0pHyc/w-d-xo.html
