Analogue/vintage gear is great when it's reliable, though I think we're going to see even more of it modelled, emulated and sampled in software in coming years. It's become a hell of a lot more feasible in the past decade or so to accurately model the character and non-linearities that hardware units produce, which aside from the tactile aspect is what people who tend to gravitate towards it are looking for. I'd be curious to know if printing drums to tape and then back in to the DAW was used on every record, I Like It When You Sleep has some of my all time favourite drum sounds.

The point went well over your head. His main argument was that many musicians can just become "digitally lost" and waste quite a bit of time just turning knobs on a screen and don't actually spend time understanding the hardware and why it sounds the way it does. It doesn't have to be expensive either. Recently I bought a second hand tube receiver for my record setup and compared it to my digital.. it's not even comparable, and the analog hardware ran me $300 less than the big box brand I already had.

But it’s a trade off, I find real stuff is pretty punchy and has a distinct sound compared to plugins and it’s very difficult for either to accurately imitate each other

I think, frankly, creative geniuses who actually output solid art should be given more leeway with creative opinions. Anybody who has interacted with a creative genius knows that throwing ideas and opinions around is precisely how good art is made. They understand they may be contradicting themselves in the past or in the future, but the constant churning and oscillating is where actual brilliance lies. The art itself speaks more volumes than throw away interview answers. Additionally, I don't think Matty was saying "don't use plugins because they're lame". He was more throwing a comment out about what the band is interested in currently. I'm sure he's plenty aware of how plugin-laden his music has been in the past; that's half the reason The 1975 was so determined to use real instruments this record. People evolve.
