Depends where in life you are financially and socially. Id rather buy something for under 500$ and spend the big bucks on my baby that is underway. That way i can still enjoy horology and live a normal life. I'm sure there are also many other monetary expenses much more vital than a high end watch for most people. But if you are well set and don't have any other responsibilities then this is a great advice.

The only thing with a 'Grail Watch' is. There is a possibility that when you eventually get it your tastes may change and it just becomes another watch in your collection ie you get bored with it. If you then decide you want to sell it, and depending on the brand you could lose a ton of money. I guess it comes down to quantity over quality.

    @kaunas888 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

There is an interesting psychological factor in wanting to acquire something, which objectively is not worth the price. However, just the struggle, waiting and sacrifice to get it motivates folks to begin the quest. I think that there is a lot of dopamine involved in the waiting, yearning, planning, and longing for that Rolex watch. It is called the grail watch because the object (made out of steel in a modern factory) becomes something almost transcendental, magical and holy; it has moved into the realm of the sacred. I imagine that many once they finally acquire their Rolex, they then realize that it is just a watch...and not a transformative object and they are disappointing. For many it the waiting and anticipating which is more fun that achieving the goal. That is why many watch collectors will buy and sell the same model of watch over and over again. Once they get it, they do not want it, so they sell it, then they want it again, and the cycle continues all over again.

Most Rolexes not worth their price especially older ones. With the crappy end links and bracelets etc. Those old rolexes are still very expensive for what you’re getting. Even the new ones aren’t really worth it. It’s not just me saying this a lot of watch guys agree. Most youtubers don’t bash watches they like (Rolex) But they should be honest with themselves. Rolex puts a huge amount of expertise in the movement and it’s development. Most competitors are just shoving a Seiko or an ETA in there and spending money on the shiny bits. Of course they look like great value. Sorry, but to say that’s a superficial conclusion is being very polite.
Rolex absolutely are special. Special enough for the prices? Probably not. But in the end, it depends on your priorities and just how Much of a watchist you are.

    • @MVK_GS

@@PepRex I would not characterize it as "price gouging" as Rolex is not providing you with something that you absolutely require (I mean, you can buy a Timex if your primary concern is knowing the time). Rolex sells a luxury product; same as an exotic car (or you can buy a used Prius); or a luxury apartment overlooking Central Park, NY (you can rent a one-bedroom in a more affordable area). Rolex knows what they are selling - a well built status symbol. Only a fool buys a Rolex when that purchase does not figure well into their actual finances. I have a Rolex and an Omega and I can tell you that the Omega, at less than half the price of the Rolex, is essentially the same quality of watch. But, at least, I recognize this and understand why I purchased both.

I buy homage watches before pulling the trigger on a grail. This gives me the chance to get a basic look and feel of a style. If I'm convinced, I give the homage away (or sell it) and buy the grail. I've found this to be very useful. 4 times out of 5, I end up giving away the homage because I don't like something or another about the piece.
Eg: Panerai Homage (Kimsdun) which was the same proportion as the Panerai I wanted was incompatible with my daily wear and styling. I fond it too big (44mm) and cumbersome and therefore I dropped the idea.
Bottom line is that if chosen sensibly, homages can be a great litmus test for a grail. Sometimes they pass the test so well that you drop the idea of a grail. I ordered a Green dial Loreo which is a Submariner Hulk homage. I ended up liking it so much that I've kept it. Rolex wait time and other things put together made no sense for me to wag my tongue around and wait for it.
Currently I've just order a Parnis homage of the Rolex GMT Master II. I've heard from the reviews that it is very well put together. Looking forward to checking it out.

There are watches from brands that keep their value; and watches which fall. And, this occurs at all price categories, and it is generally the naive and ignorant who get screwed. The only difference is that the higher the price, the more money is in play to lose...or possibly gain if one is very lucky or cunning. Generally I do not think that watch investing is the best investment, and it should only be undertaken by those who are shrewd and knowledgeable. There are also missed opportunity costs; that $15,000 could buy stock, or property or beautiful antiques. In the end folks have to decide whether they are buying watches because they want to enjoy then and/or for an investment. My advice is, buy what you really like and as long as you can afford it, do not look too much at the resale price. If you really like a watch, you will not need to resell it and try and recover what you spent for it. The problem is that so many folks do not know what they really want, and are too swayed by temporary fashion. Once the fashion passes they do not like the watch. They only liked it because it was in style then.

This is not an uncommon practice but when TAG does it, oh the horror. How dare they. This just tells me that you know nothing about watches and you have conditioned to hate TAG by others in the watch community like Jory.

Actually, it's a more serious question than you think (unless you have virtually unlimited funds). I have to ask whether one of my reasonably attainable "grail" watches, e.g., a Glasshutte Original Senator Hand Date or a JLC Master Control Sector Dial, would make me happier than my current three favorites: Zodiac Olympos Military Chronometer; Christopher Ward CW65 PVD Black; or my trusty $249 Certina DS Podium (a 38mm go anywhere, do anything classic)? I prize comfort, light weight (arthritic wrist) and readability.

Overall your better off saving for your grail watches rather than settling by buying a bunch of cheap watches just to scratch that itch. The price range doesn’t matter as much as getting what you truly want.

For best investment avoid any kind of fashion watch, especially if they skimp on quality...and that includes several very expensive Swiss brands such as Panerai and Henry Miller. Go with good quality and timeless styles-this is why the Rolex Sub has done so well-preferably from established watch brands what are well managed and think in the long term.

Tag made a ceramic Aquaracer that I’ve been wanting and will probably buy, because I had a Link that I wore for 15 years, beat it to death, and when I was tired of it, I still got a reasonable price for it. Most men’s sports watches are too big for me. The watch companies don’t really make sports watches for women. Omega made the women’s sea master, but it is no longer in production. Most of those on the market are beaten up. I have a 36mm Breitling that is too big and heavy for me. Maybe the Tag Aquaracer’s place is on a woman’s wrist.

Interestinng vid... as a watch newbie I'd say bad watches are a waste of money and that if you spend time researching, and deciding what you do and don't like, there are good watches, and bargains to be had at any price point. At the moment my three watch collection contains my 'everyday' Orient Mako II, a dressier Bambino, and a mecha-quartz chrono from Dan Henry. None cost me more than $400, I love 'em all, and they all work for me. Sure, they most likelly won't go to my kids on forty years, but equally I don't see them as a waste of money compared to something from Invicta etc. They are what they are, inexpensive sure, but they work for me.

Great episode. My second watch was Tag - but it is an automatic and I would say that it was pretty affordable (around 1000) - I got some kind of discount at AD in Spain. Some time after my purchase and after doing a lot of watch research I regreted that purchase. But now, looking and wearing that tag, I like it a lot :) It is formula 1 caliber 6, I think they do not produce it anymore. It is my go to steel mechanical sports watch. It is of great size (41) and it has 200m of WR and it keeps great time. Would I buy another Tag ? No. I think I would go for something else in that price, but I think that my Tag for the price was a good buy.
Oh and also I agree with what you said about buying quality watches while waiting for your "grail". I bought the king Turtle (black dial on bracelet, J version) and currently I am saving for Tudor BB 58. Is it going to delay me ? Yes. Do I regret buying that watch ? No. It is a good watch. I also think that I will buy at least one more watch before I get to BB58. I can wait - patience is a good thing.

I love the looks of Tag Heuer watches. However, unfortunately, they lack in quality in comparison to their competitors like Oris, Hamilton, longines, and even tissot that are known and tends to be more affordable. The Tag heuer aquaracer that you mentioned, has the basic, unregulated/straight out of the factory eta movement, framed by a plastic movement holder with flimsy bracelet held on by basic push-in pins.... For over $2000. They lost respect for me when they invested so much in their advertising and not on the watches itself.

Hey Jory, you ever thought of maybe include Certina in some of your new videos? They've got tons of cool history behind them and they're highly underated, their DS concept is pretty cool. I just bought a certina DS first Ceramic, it's a quartz but it's a diver that gives you that submariner vibe while still having it's own unique design, it has a domed sapphire, made 361L stainless steel, water resistant to 200m, decent blue lume, polished and brushed Finnish with a really cool certina turtle logo on the case back, not to mention a really nice screw down crown, 41mm, really cool watch, picked it up on eBay for a steal, I believe the reference I have is now discontinued though.

  • @willi960

The first Invicta pictured in this video was a Sea Dragon that sold new for $140 (this watch never sold for $1,600). The second Invicta pictured was a Venom that retailed for $200 (this watch never sold for $2,600). I have sold hundreds of Invicta watches over the years and I have almost always sold them for more than I paid for them. When purchasing, I do try to get the best deal so that definitely factors in to my resale calculations. Invicta watches do hold their value and they are a good investment. I know that my experience is not unique. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and everyone has different taste. To me an Invicta looks so much more interesting than most luxury watches. Invicta is a great deal for the money. They are well built with better than standard movements.

I like nice watches. but im not high enough up the management chain at work yet to completely avoid physical labor. so i wear cheap watches that look good, but i wont cry over scratching up. Generally quartz/gshock types, but i have a few Chinese special automatics. I tend to gravitate toward some of the less expensive brands that still offer Seiko movements and sapphire crystals, so upper end "cheap" watches. My favorite right now being one by Pagani Designs. Cant really tell its not a $400 watch tbh, and i got it on sale for 60 bucks.

I have had a few invicta watches, I love the automatic movement. $80.00 for a throw away watch is okay with me. That cheap crystal always scratches and it doesn’t keep time well. I tinker with timing automatics and an $80.00 to trash a watch after three years of use is fine. I never liked digital or quartz watches but this first GSHOCK watch I just got I absolutely love.

No flames here. I respect your, spelt right, opinion. Overall, I am satisfied having spent just under $1,000 on 27 watches. I really enjoy my Invicta Pro Diver 39002. Is it perfect? No. It has a decent movement and cost me $75, about the price of a mediocre meal with wine at a restaurant. I expect to get 5-10 years, and I am fine with that. I also bought a quartz Franck Muller Crazy Dial homage for $20, about the price of a large pizza. I wear it 2-5 times a year and I enjoy it. I bought a $20 Tevise Submariner homage to see if I like the whole Sub thing. I put it on a NATO strap and wear it much more than I expected. I also spent $10 on 3, yes 3, field/pilot type watches. I was pretty sure I did not like field/pilot watches and after trying to wear them for 3 months I was right. Oh well, I guess I had to sacrifice a Big Mac Meal to get that lesson. I am actively looking for G Shock I might like. I want an analog dial with a digital readout in a size and style that suits me. I have a few more very inexpensive watches that have positive utility to me. I have also bought some less expensive watches that I regret buying. The Seiko Flightmaster, the Nomos Lambda homage, the Parnis sterile dial GMT. The Parnis is interesting in that I really like the watch, I hate the fact it is a sterile dial. I will probably swap dials shortly. I have spent just under $1,000 on my 27 watches. I have 5 I regret buying, 7 I wear so infrequently that I really should not have bought them, But I have 15 watches, all under $200 and some as low as $20, that I enjoy. I am on a journey to buy at least one "real" watch that I can hand down and be remembered by. In the year since I started buying these "cheap" watches I have learned 10 times more than in the previous 2 years where I was just watching TH-cam videos and looking at watches online and in stores. Overall, money well spent.

Kinda late to this convo but…
I have INVICTA watches, I will never get a limited #1 anything from them. I like the weight and size. I do own a Reserve venom in gold and it’s huge, but for $249. It’s not for everyone so I get that.
I’ve been rocking a Red Rally Citizen chrono eco drive for what feels like 5 years and spent $150 off a pawn website. All it needs are straps, and i spend about 25-50 dollars on leather straps 😅 ouch
Every other watch I’ve owned has been a “pharmacy” watch or a casio from a place I can buy a camera 😂. I honestly just want to step up from 29.99 watches and treat myself to middlepack watches. Might Go off the deep end if I make it to my 50th birthday, and get a High line watch, but gotta get there first lol and the invictas should hold me till then
