- In 2014, before Ethereum and altcoin mania, before ICOs and concerns about Tether and Facebook's Libra, Motherboard gained access to a massive and secretive Bitcoin mine housed within a repurposed factory in the Liaoning Province in rural northeast China.
This is the infrastructure that keeps the digital currency’s decentralized network up and running, and its operators were profiting big time.
The mine we visited was just one of six sites owned by a secretive group of four people, part of a colossal mining operation that, as of our visit, cumulatively generated 4,050 bitcoins a month, equivalent to a monthly gross of $1.5 million as of 2015. Since then, the cryptocurrency mining world has become even more extreme.

one of my buddies tried getting me into bitcoin when it was around 80 cents. I was going to buy $1,000 worth for kicks but didn't really understand the concept and when started telling me about planning to buy expensive graphics cards to "mine" them thought it was some kind of scam to sell hardware. My bud bought 8 gpu's but then lost most of his savings in stock market and sold the gpu's before setting them up. Then years later he came up on money and invested 100k when bitcoin prices were going crazy. He was paying 2-3x retail cost for used more electricity efficient GPUs. Rented space in data centers to setup his mining farm. Then bitcoin started crashing and for few months he still did ok mining other cryptos and exchanging for btcs but with so many new coins coming out whole market got diluted and it was too hard to make $. It got to a point where his mining couldn't even cover electricity costs and had to fight to get out of his data center contracts and then sold off all his hardware for big loss as gpu prices collapsed with btc and other cryptos. So sick guy was onto it from the beginning and was so sold on the concept and still ended up losing bunch of money. He could have made 10s of millions of dollars just running his 8 gpus collecting bit coins.

They were supportive in the start, mining bitcoin was the main funding sources for local officials back then, specially in regions with excess electricity.
The government crackdown came later after the government acquired major payment services and created their CBDC.

There seems to be a ridiculous amount of people who have no clue what Bitcoin and blockchain technology is, but somehow feel that they know everything about why Bitcoin will fail or why it's a supposed scam.
At the end of the day, the fact is blockchain tech is a revolutionary invention and Bitcoin is similarly revolutionary in being the first working implementation of this new tech. Both of these are facts. Whether Bitcoin will be successful or go mainstream is debatable, but regardless, it is still a revolutionary concept and requires further research and exploration.
It's not a "failure" and it's not a "scam". It's simply a newly emerging technology. The category it eventually falls under depends on how people will use it in the future. How are people going to call this a bullshit idea when it is clearly functional, solves a long-standing computing problem, and has been growing exponentially in use and progressive advancement for 6 years.
Want a real scam? Try digging into how inefficient and inflexible our current transaction and financial systems are. How centralization has given huge institutions free reign to essentially gamble with people's money, and then get a nice bailout when they ultimately and inevitably fuck up.

Thanks, 400 antminers will most definately turn a profit as they are Application specific devices, meaning they are for mining crypto-currencies ONLY. A single Antminer is about 200 times faster than if you were to mine with just one AMD 290x. The thing is that this would cost a lot of money to start up & you wouldn't see profit straight away.

Keep it simple in the beginning. Buy something, like an index fund, and hold. Educate yourself in the meantime and elevate your risk tolerance over time.

Bitcoin mining is not very profitable anymore, and you need specific machines for it. You can mine ETH on a normal computer all you need is a decent GPU, then you can convert that into BTC, that is the best way to mine right now, but it's not clear how long that will last so it is a risk.

There are other cons and problems, from what I've seen their great expenses and problems are 1) wages and salaries 2) electricity 3) locals (I'd be surprised to discover they own all the places they operate) 4) obsolescence (technology evolves every time, their miners must stay at the top of efficiency, their cooling system however just has to be "good enough") 5) increasing difficulty (the more it goes, the harder it gets, the more expensive the investment has to be) 6) volatility (the Bitcoin is not a stable money and thus there is a very high risk when your business is based on them).

So I had to dig somewhere else, like in fathers pocket, which, I must say, is way more reliable source than bitcoin digging (unless u have super ultra mega giga turbo charged computer like this guy and a "slave").
