    Why is everyone saying RIP Winamp? It's still around and is still a amazing application.

    • @ArcadianLegend
      @ArcadianLegend 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +IRNatman Because most aren't aware that development on V5.7 has picked up slowly recently. Also there's this longstanding notion going around that the current version of Winamp is terrible bloatware, I mean, yeah, it does have a fair few features it doesn't really need. but bloatware? My PC is a potato and Winamp barely uses any resources, nevermind that there's a Winamp Lite available which goes right back to the basics. Also the adware was removed from installers the very moment that AOL sold off Winamp to Radionomy.

    • @IRNatman
      @IRNatman 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Arcadian Legend
      Winamp is not bloatware, not in the least. It uses way less resources than any other player I've tried. Even a 700mhz PIII can handle it no problem. Don't get why anyone would say that. I mean, Winamp did have some rough times but it's back and it's amazing. Another bonus, it looks great too.
      i.imgur.com/6IDXyHp.jpg
      Love this fucking player!! I've used it every day for many years!

    • @ArcadianLegend
      @ArcadianLegend 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IRNatman Yep, I've tried other players, but I always kept coming back to Winamp . It can look even better with the addition of the ClassicPro2 plugin and it's skins too.

    • @kavierocks
      @kavierocks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      IRNatman To start some controversy, I think the "R.I.P. Winamp" people are the one who have switched over to iPhones and have been forced to used shitty iTunes. I run Winamp on both a Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 system daily and it's still the only player I've used since about 2001.

    Wow, a whole four years later since I last commented and here I am STILL using Winamp in 2018. There has been nothing to date that can replace it in terms of functionality and customizability. All mainstream media players are very samey including limited customizability like adding new file format support. It's also nice how tiny a memory footprint it leaves as it was made for the Windows 98 era lol.
    On a side note, Winamp looks HILARIOUSLY tiny at 4k resolution even with "Double Size" enabled. I remember when it used to fill the entire screen on 1024x768 way back when lol.

    Winamp is coming back in 2019, the current company who owns Winamp now just released version 5.8 removing the things that have the Winamp Pro lock thus making it freeware again and adding OpenMPT to improve the mod file system. The CD ripping is now done by Windows instead of Sonic for ripping CDs. And removing DRM from Winamp 5.8.

    This was my go to, just before XM came on the scene. There was a channel on winamp (I can not for the life of me remember what it was called... my CRS is too strong), that was devoted to the underground rave scene. Does anyone here recollect that? Gawd, some of that old school still flows through my blood

    Well it is now March 2021. I still use Winamp on my android phone and my PC's. If you want to listen to your music library with no problems use Winamp, even today. There is nothing better out there today. In the past I have used just about all of them, I would recommend Winanp, it is still number one. I did pay for my Winamp player years ago, so I have all the usability of the player even though I rarely use some features.

    @Paraboxify I'd certainly be open to the idea of doing things with other OSs. I don't know much about Mac OS so I'm probably the wrong person for that, but Linux is something I'm very familiar with. I did consider installing a bunch of older Linux versions but I didn't think it'd be very interesting.

    your point about winamps increasing adds and using much space on your harddrive is simply WRONG. you obviously went for the full versions... winamp knew about this kind of problem and released "lite" versions of 5.5 versions. no adds, not much space, no problems. still got the internet radio ability.

    I never see ANY ads in my Winamp and I don't have the Pro version. Maybe it's because I have all music in a playlist and it just fills most of the player in that window? Anyways, it works the best for me, has for years and I personally won't change unless they stop releasing updates.

    I used Winamp 2.81 for YEARS and only last year was forced to abandon it. It actually ran under Win10 until a Windoze update broke it forever. I loved how small and simple it was, it loaded INSTANTLY and I never had an issue with it. I'm using the current version now and it is SLOW.......

    Not sure what SE0S is talking about. D'ld 5.63 and it was still uncut. Not trying to be a Winamp fanboy, as I use foobar2000 for ALL of my music converting needs. The fact that you need to buy the pro version of Winamp to get that feature is rather unfair.
    He also did technically cover the AOL period, as he did talk about the 5.XX series of Winamp, which is the current versions that are owned by AOL. I think they also bought Nullsoft when the most popular version of Winamp, 2.95, was released.

    Using Winamp 2.80 since it came out, in 2002! Never ever felt the need to change or use another program. If I can keep it simple and working flawless, why make a change? I've done the install back in 2002, when I still had a Pentium 3 running Windows 98 :P. And never had to run the installer again, I simply copied it again to the hd of the other rigs I had after that. Winamp opens in like a blink of the eye and plays the song right off the bat.

    It's the first time I install Winamp since version 5.1x and it crashed upon start.
    Probably because my winamp.ini was never edited or removed because I've been using it since early 2.7 series (2.78 was my favorite version).
    Never uninstalled, never removed, kept it safe in a second partition so all my skins, plugins and etc are still there since the first version I ever installed.
    Even though I use MPC:HC most of the time I'll never move my music folder from my "D:\Program\Winamp\Music\"
