Save your money. I wore a Rolex submariner for about six years in the late 2000s because I was in my 20s and thought I was the shit, but that watch couldn’t keep if it’s life depended on it. It was always running slow and every swinging dick that tried to look cool like me had one.
Finally, I sold it I did not wear a luxury watch for many years in fact I just wore a Casio G-Shock but when the 43.5 mm Omega Planet Ocean came out I had to have it!
It has been my daily wear watch for almost 7 years now and I could never see me wearing anything else. Best part no one has ever asked me if it’s real and it’s never lost time. Typically I’m gaining around two seconds a day which is amazing.

As a reformed Rolex kinda fanboy, lets be honest Omega is every bit the quality of watch as Rolex. Decades of advertising have created a Rolex perception that jacks up the price. They are great watches, but if you think a Datejust is a better watch than an Aqua Terra for example, you just don't understand.

On a related note, I am wearing a $3,000 Seiko diver right now, depth rating aside is every bit as good as my Sea-Dweller that I wore daily for several years. I used to be a diver watch depth snob, now I have matured into, 200 meters is all I care about. I do agree with one of the comments below about clickbait titles on TH-cam like "Rolex Killer" or "Submariner" killer. Some of those watches may actually be better or just as good as Rolex from an objective standpoint, but they will not beat the Rolex marketing machine that is many decades in the making.

Rolex doesn't need to collaborate with Swatch or any other such gimmick and cheapen their brand. Truth be told Omega is a 2 watch sport brand, that is 3rd in sales behind Rolex and Cartier. Your Omega is who has the "inferior " position in the luxury watch market p2cking order and sales. Omega was also late to the party in regards to Bond flicks. I have a modest 5 watch collection - Grand Seiko 25th Anniversary Limited Edition 9S, Omega DeVille quartz, TAG Aquaracer for everyday, Citizen EcoDrive chrono for work/play, a private label Swiss quartz built by my local jeweler (it’s got a beautiful two tone dual-clasp bracelet that is fantastic), and an inexpensive 1990’s vintage Bulova extra-thin stainless/gold plate dress watch my employer gave me for 5 yrs of service.
My next/dream watch - Omega Seamaster, JLC Reverso (or about any JLC actually), a GS Spring Drive…. I could not be less interested in a Rolex at 1/2 or even 1/3 the price. I’d rather find a nice looking vintage Longines for a fraction of the cost.

After studying horology for over 25 years I agree 100% with this video. Like most watch enthusiast, I own both brands and am very happy wearing each. However, at the end of the day, Omega hands down offers more bang for the buck. Rolex watches are great, but they have become more of status symbol, and with that, comes double the price tag. Rewind back 15 years ago I would have said different as Omega offered mostly ETA based movements and Rolex offered their in-house 31XX series. In my opinion, the 31XX out performed the ETA based calibers and the 31XX was made with higher quality materials. With Omega's release of their in-house 8XXX / 99XX- (Chrono) movements it gave Rolex a run for their money in terms of performance, accuracy, and quality. Omega definitely offers more model variations, more choice of metals, more choice of complications, and you don't have to go on waiting list or be a "VIP" to purchase one. Not to mention, in most Omega models your now getting an in-house movement which is also a certified chronometer. Just my 2 cents. You as a collector/buyer must make your own determination.

I think the driving force with Rolex is simply brand recognition. For some people, simply being able to say “I own a Rolex” is a feature. They set the watch up completely, provided an archive copy of the original sales info. (I'd bought it from a reputable auction w/o papers) and offered me a tea/coffee while I waited, as though I were a regular buying one of their most expensive models. A good overview of Omega over Rolex, I don't believe the quality of Omega is over Rolex. When you put the two side by side there is a clear quality build difference. Totally on the button with pricing though Rolex is an investment watch and people with more money than sense are keeping the Rolex prices high for paying way over the retail price, I do believe this is partly to blame with Rolex not selling their watches to people who genuinely want to own a Rolex and enjoy wearing it. Omega are currently discounting some of their range at AD's here in the UK but this is the AD's stock so they can offer discounts to move stock that is not selling. I don't see the point of Rolex AD's and boutique's when you can't buy one. All very frustrating but a good topic for discussion. This is only my opinion and it's not meant to cause any discomfort for Omega or Rolex fan's. Keep the content coming.

To be honest, there’s only a couple of models from each that interest me. I do like that Omega are going hard with the coaxial escapement though, which is clearly an improved design and will require less maintenance over time. I will be picking up a new Rolex with the 32xx movement and the “Chronergy” escapement in the next couple of months, and I plan on taking measurements once a week with a timegrapher, as I don’t fully trust Rolex’s new escapement design as of yet, with a decent number of reports of low amplitude over time, resulting in loss of accuracy. I suspect this may be down to issues of lubrication of the escapement, something that isn’t anywhere near as much of an issue with the coaxial design.

Thank you for your insight. I stumbled across your video while studying on Omega as a possible next watch. Rolex has not and will not be on my radar because I have no patience for dog and pony shows like you called it. I have exactly one nice timepiece - it's a stainless IWC Pilot's Chronograph. It never leaves my wrist and I use the chronograph function routinely. I want a gold watch for formal and special occasions and I have it narrowed down to IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar, IWC Automatic 42, and Omega Speedmaster Moonphase. I was also thinking about an IWC Pilot's Chronograph in gold, but I don't want to duplicate the watch that I already have just for 'upgraded' case material. I think the perpetual calendar is one of the coolest set of complications ever. I like the simplicity of the Automatic 42. And I know I would use the heck out of the chronograph on the Omega and would likely wear it more often because of that. Do you have any suggestions among these three?

Appreciate the perspective and don’t disagree with everything you say.
My first nice watch was an Omega Seamaster Pro 300 (the diver) - after doing a lot of back and forth between that and the Rolex Sub - around 20 years.
I do think the points you make about the significantly more variety at Omega are both pros and cons.
To me, the endless options at Omega somewhat cheapen the brand and make it come off more like a fashion brand rather than timeless horology.
If you buy a submariner - Rolex may change the styling slightly - but in 20 years the design will still be similar.
If you buy one of Omega’s designs - they may discontinue it and move in an entirely different direction.
That can be a plus or a minus - you may end up with a very rare/unique piece.
I buy watches with the intention to own them forever - so I don’t personally care - I believe you should buy what you like and will enjoy wearing.
But Rolex is very consistent - so despite being hard to get at retail - you know that when you do - you have a very solid, consistent product.
The Omegas you are taking some fashion risk.
And not everyone who buys a high end watch wants to do that. They just want a nice, quality piece of metal that they can feel good about on their wrist.
They don’t want to do a lot of research.
Rolex is the safe choice for most people.

Brand valuation is based on the companies earning power, by telling people to buy Omega instead, you’re attempting to lower their sales that would in turn, lower their brand value. I bought a Seamaster 300M with bracelet in 2020. It loses time despite METAS. The bracelet clasp pinched my skin. The extension regularly opened by itself. ☝️ 3 1/2 years later, I now have the Seamaster on an Omega rubber strap but still losing time, and upgraded to a Submariner. 🎉

@thetimeteller, these are great points. However, I think there's a fifth point here that many don't realize. Longevity and Heritage. Omega is the original king of production watches and not until after the Quartz crisis did Rolex become the market leader. Before that, Omega was the market share leader by a good margin. I believe this heritage over multiple centuries has granted them that design prowess and boldness that is sometimes overlooked by many. To me, it's not better because it's "same for less." It's better because it just is. I'm a fan of Rolex for sure, but if I have to pick, it would have to be Omega.

You make some good points. Don't have an Omega but they're nice. Have a Rolex Sub & Daytona, both purchased well below retail during really bad economic times. Pricing on their "good" models is silly. You can say whatever you want, but Rolex is a significantly more desirable time piece for whatever reason. You said it, I can walk into any dealer and walk out with a beautiful Omega.

It just seemed like the Ford Taurus of expensive watches. Rare, vintage and microbrands with interesting histories, stories and complications interest me. Thank you for your professional opinion, and I agree. Omega has been making watching before Rolex. They are COSC and METAS certified. Rolex make very durable/good quality watches, but have always had better marketing. Rolex has been a marketing brand, and Omega has always been about watch making. I have both, and really think that an Aquaterra or DJ would be a forever GADA. Between the two giants, Rolex sells watches, Omegas makes them. Doesn't detract from the points made in this video, but Hodinkee did a side by side magnetic test between the "1K" Milgauss and a "15K" Omega and found both equally resistant in their test. I'm guessing Rolex has just never updated their rating for the Milgauss despite it's much great than 1K performance.

well, as an enthusiast that never owned neither rolex watches nor omega watches, with all due respect i don't really see the reason in this whole argument, if you want to talk about bang for the buck, bro, with the price of an omega you can buy yourself g-shocks and garmins that will last a shit ton of time, and once they stop working, it doesent really matter because you still have 3500 to buy another 500 dollar watch that can last you over a decade (while being way more practical and functional then all omega and rolex watches). so my man, if you are spending over 2k on a timepiece we know we are talking about jewelry, and since in a rolex vs omega debate, you won`t be able to find a way to prove that omega produces products with better quality, so at this point, people should stop the childish argument of wich watch is better than wich! just buy whatever you rather having on your arm!
