Friend told me of stumbling on the first Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970 in NYC at a smallish club, and sneaking in to it. He ended up seeing a list of Broadway's best up close and intimately, highlighted by Mary Martin singing My Heart Belongs to Daddy, Carol Channing singing Hello Dolly!, Ethel doing There's No Business Like Show Business, and Streisand singing People. I have always been jealous of that stroke of luck. Thankfully, this one was taped for us all to love!

Woahh, it's almost too good to be true to see these Broadway legends (and legends in television and film too) all in one stage but it happened! Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, Celeste Holm, Ann Miller, Lauren Bacall, Carol Channing, Colleen Dewhurst, Pearl Bailey, Dorothy Loudon, Diahann Carroll, Ellen Burstyn, Robert Preston, Mickey Rooney, Joel Grey, Julie Harris, Jerry Orbach, Richard Kiley, Kaye Ballard, Beatrice Arthur, Alexis Smith, Charles Grodin, Alfred Drake just to name some!

All of these amazing Broadway stars on one stage singing songs that THEY introduced and made famous, especially the veterans Alfred Drake, Celeste Holm, Carol Channing, Mary Martin and Ethel Merman. Broadway's GOLDEN AGE!

Where it not for The Muppet Show my generation (GenX) would not have known who these greats were in this context.

I’m sure Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier were invited but had the good sense not to do it. I watched this when it was on tv. Fun but corny idea. Makes for a good compilation of original Hollywood stars now that they are gone.

Yes, for television shows like this they had no choice. Too much microphone feedback for too many people too.
