A great video Ropemonster, I’ve been to playa 17 times since 2011, but now i go to a quieter area near Huatalco . I never wear anything worth money any go out with very little cash but I learned to get back to hotel well before Midnite anywhere. This actually made me think hey i better tighten up my senses in mexico. I easily could lose my iPhone as i carry it everywhere. I am surprised that the police would totally clean one out of all one possessions. That’s a great wake up call when i travel to mexico again. Truly enjoyed seeing the beach area far north of playa 88. Too many tourists in Mamaitas beach area for my liking. I like your videos for being raw and honest to what a place is like to live in.
Thanks so much for the feedback my friend!! Huatulco is definitely tempting and I’d love to learn more about it. Might have to visit soon. And yes, these IPhones just keep getting more expensive and attractive to steal! I came close to losing my 13 in Quito a couple of times but that was desperate Venezuelan immigrants… never thought I’d lose it this way. Lesson learned but still perturbed lol 😂. Thanks for watching 😎🏝️
Damn that's messed up, I didn't expect to hear the police jacked you for your stuff smh! I heard about them taking money but not anything else. Glad to see your ok though. Thanks for the vid. I went to Playa 72 and walked to Playa 88 and seems pretty chill, I like it. Stay safe bro!✌🏼
Great video man. It’s too bad you got robbed. I come to Playa Del Carmen quite often and I always worried about the safety. But after scootering around in the city and going and checking out the Riviera I’ve never had a problem yet knock on wood.
Glad to hear that my friend!! I definitely felt safe there most of the time so it was a shocker for me… not too salty about it though… seems like it was a low season, desperation move on their part. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel 😎🏝️🇲🇽❤️
Dang, although I've lived and worked in Playa for 1.5 years and know all too well about the corruption there, I never imagined you'd say that is who robbed you... and so brazenly! Sorry this happened but glad you're safe 🙏🏼
Thanks Jiji, I was pretty damn surprised too. That watch was a gift from my dad almost 14 years ago so you can imagine the disbelief. I explained that to them and they gave zero f%*s. Karma should give them all what they deserve. Luckily it wasn’t worse. It can always be worse. Thanks for the kind words and as always for watching! ❤️🏝️😎
Great videos, really appreciate the updates. I’ve been traveling to Playa for a while and like you found my special love while I was vacationing there. I have persuaded her to join me in Denver for the next few years before we spend the rest of our lives in the Yucatán. Keep up the good work my friend! p.s sorry to hear about your episode with the local law enforcement, I’m shocked as I’ve walked the same streets as you and never felt threatened..crazy!!
dang getting robbed by the national guard is wild..sorry that happened to you bro.. i was walking home to 34th and had a police truck lurking behind and the thought actually crossed my mind.. but told myself i was being paranoid..gotta keep my head on a swivel now.
Yea Joe I couldn’t believe it myself. Worst I’ve ever had to do is pay a 300mxn bribe an open beer on 15th but that was the police. Creeping on me the same like you mentioned. Thanks for watching, my friend!
Hey RM, appreciate ur Northside coverage, those beaches are beautiful. Bring plenty of supplies to fully enjoy ur time, services are scarce. Your robbery was a bad break, overall, it appears law enforcement do a commendable job in that area. I am happily returning to PDC in two weeks. ATB.
My pleasure my friend! Love the spots up north. And yea, for the most part it still feels safe here. Walking alone that late even in US cities isn’t always going to end well. Thanks for watching 🏝️😎❤️
Dang,,,funny how i already knew who robbed you as soon as you said that you would fill us in,,,sorry that happened to you man, you're a good dude doin good things. Thanks for forging ahead and making the beach update. Keep that extra eye out🥸
Thanks my friend!! Always appreciate your positivity here! I’ll keep going, you know me but yes, with more caution. Focusing more on connecting with nature and avoiding the “nightlife”.
Thanks my friend! Yea, the vibe has changed no doubt. I went to the river at Punta Esmeralda yesterday twice to cool off and I was the only foreigner there lol. I didn’t feel unsafe or threatened, but it could be different for solo females no doubt. Much love and thanks for watching as always 🏝️❤️😎
Funny I got extorted by a cop last october. Driving south of PDC. Had a few drinks in the rental car with me he initially wanted 10k pesos. But then settled for everything in my wallet. Which wad around 100 bucks.
10k pesos?! These guys are getting out of control 😭. Glad they only got the 100usd but still rough. It’s crazy how the media makes the cartels out to be the big threat here, but it’s actually law enforcement. Thanks for sharing your story and for watching 😎🏝️
hey roper, what do you figure the average age of expats is in PDC ? For example Mazatlan appears to have a very old expat demographic in their 70s. and 80s.....
AMAZING question!! Yes, Mazatlan and PV are definitely older groups of expats. PDC is a younger crowd of “alternative healers”, digital nomads, investors, TH-camrs etc for sure. Hard to put an average age on it but seems like sometimes at 36 I’m the “old guy” 😂😂. Thanks for watching 😎🏝️
Thanks my friend! Really appreciate all the support here from the TH-cam fam! Hard to admit getting robbed but nobody is judging me and hopefully this info keeps you guys aware and safe. Thanks for watching 🏝️😎
I enjoy your videos a lot. I used to live in Playa, actually in the Colosio, right around 58th and 5th, and it's good to see the city again. I actually had residency but as time went on I found it really sketchy living there. As just one of many examples, on my second day I was robbed when someone climbed in my rental unit window and stole my cell phone and some money while I slept and three other units also got hit in my building. That was my 'welcome to Playa del Carmen'. Long story short, as time went on I got tired of how corrupt it was, even the developer of the condo I purchased used to occasionally say to me, "I could bury you in the elevator shaft and no one would ever know," so needless to say, I eventually returned to Canada. Believe me, I have many more stories but there's a lot of positives to living in that area as well and I don't want to just focus on my bad experiences. Let's just say that owning a condo and living there full time wasn't a good fit for me. I'll enjoy seeing Playa again vicariously through your videos. Stay safe and I'm sorry to hear that you got robbed.
Can’t thank you enough for sharing your experience here. That’s insanely scary what the building owner said to you… I’ve covered in a past video why I rent and don’t own here. I’ve been in Latin America long enough to know that things can change for the worse, and quickly. Best to reserve the ability to up and leave and only lose your deposit. There’s a misconception that it’s safer in that 52nd area, but it can happen anywhere. I was filming at Fundadores one time and a group of locals started trying to approach me (they were wasted drunk) and I’m sure they wanted my gimbal and cam. Easy comeup in their minds. Glad you managed to stay safe for the most part. Thanks for watching 🏝️😎
Excellent point about renting instead of purchasing. I'm lucky, I had an excellent local lawyer, I received 'title', and I got my money back once I sold my condo. I met so many expats who never got title and lost all of their money purchasing in Playa. In the middle of my four years there a scary event happened that made me realize that perhaps I should get my money out of Mexico. About five trucks showed up in the hotel zone of Tulum, a bunch of guys with guns surrounded about four beachfront properties and they kicked out the hotel guests at gun point, threatened the property owners and kicked them out as well, and frankly just stole the hotels with force. From that moment onwards I really questioned if my investment was safe, it was all of the money I had in the world, and the short answer was 'no', it was a different set of rules there and my investment didn't feel safe anymore. The shooting at the highly successful techno BPM Festival which closed it down for good was also a rude awakening and my outcue. I'd still visit Playa - but it changed the way that I looked at this idyllic beach town.
We will be in Playa del Carmen with our children for the next two weeks. What can we do there with the children? Thank's for the Tipps . Our children are 5 and 3
I’ll bet they’d love to see some monkeys!! Down near Akamal there’s a monkey sanctuary that’s apparently pretty cool! Also, the cenotes are very kid friendly and a nice place to cool off. I see a lot of families at Cenote Azul… there’s some smaller, shallower, individual pools there where you can easily keep an eye on them while you’re soaking. A ferry ride to Cozumel could also be a lot of fun. And the river shown in this video at Punta Esmeralda is shallow, cool, and truly beautiful right now. Have a great trip! ❤️🏝️😎
@@theropemonster Actually, it wasn't a rhetorical question, if you know exactly what a policy officer is, which is nothing more then a Corporate slug, doing what they do best.Just be terrorist. It's all the same here, as it is there. To serve and protect isn't us, it's their Corporate handlers. The cops in Mexico don't get paid much, so they have to generate some outside income at the expense of others, their Government knows they do it, they just turn a blind eye, and it's business as usual.

Its so funny that people think you can walk around with an open beer. Its illegal and generally only tolerated on 5th @theropemonster
