  • The next time you're digging through a bag of trail mix, maybe stop to think about what you might be missing when you only pick out the M&Ms. While nuts may not be the cornerstone of many peoples' diets - they may be the most nutrient dense collection of foods on the planet. Today we will be breaking down which ones can be your go to snack and which one's are best left in the bag, if any.
    What I Would Change:
    Macadamia Nuts are among the best plant sources of Omega 7 Fatty Acids, which are very beneficial and help explain the higher calories in Macadamia Nuts. With this in mind, I would move them up to the A-Tier.
    All nutrient data is pulled from the USDA's National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference.

    I don't understand why you are considering allergy frequency and calling it a serious downside when rating peanuts for example. People that are allergic should obviously never eat them in the first place, why should this influence their nutritional value for non allergic people?

      I don't just have an allergic reaction, I'm anaphylactic. I have to read labels on everything, not just on food (cosmetics, skin care, personal hygiene). Having paddles used on me during a hospital strike due to a falafel, I'm extremely careful.

    Since you've done nuts, can you do seeds next, there seems to be a lotta different options, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds. Seeing a tier list for them all would be cool!

      Along with almonds and crushed walnuts, I eat chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, milled flaxseed, tablespoon of cocoa powder, cinnamon and handful of blueberries in my oatmeal everyday.

    Please do a Nutrition tier list about sweeteners, including natural and artificial ones: here's a list to start you off: stevia, honey, white sugar, molasses, maple syrup, aspartame, sucralose, erythritol, lakanto (monkfruit), sugar in the raw, coconut sugar. I know there are a lot of other nutrition topics, but your tier lists are awesome and helpful!

    Another great list! These are genuinely so useful, and the rankings are in depth but also fast and to the point. Maybe a seed list next? (sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds etc.)

    Pecans are my favorite and have been for decades. I can't imagine eating acorns, though I just planted a couple hazelnut trees a few years ago and have noticed that they look similar.

      Walnuts, cashews and pine nuts are my favorites! but they are too expensive, so I eat mostly peanuts (not real nuts btw), and almonds and hazelnuts as condiments (smaller quantities), sometimes Brazil nuts for Selenium (I like those a lot too, but no more than 1-2 a day else they are toxic).

    Really enjoying these tier list videos! As a suggestion, when you run out of food groups what if you were to focus on a particular micronutrient (say zinc as an example) and create a tier list of zinc sources, etc.

    It turns out magnesium is important for your heart as well. I recently spent some time in the ICU. I had a heart attack a few years back and open heart surgery so my doctor and cardiologist keep a close eye on this. I ended up feeling really poorly and eventually called an ambulance. When they showed up the ECG showed something so I was rushed to the hospital. At first they thought I was having some sort of heart issue. When the cardiac enzyme showed I wasn't, they checked my potassium. It was low and that can sometimes lead to an irregular heart beat. After giving me a lot of potassium through an IV they saw my potassium had not changed. So they checked my magnesium which is needed to process potassium. It was non existent. The lowest the doctor had seen. So over the next two days I stayed in the hospital with IV after IV of magnesium until my levels rose. It turns out that my acid reflux medication had blocked the absorption of magnesium leading to other health issues. I have discontinued the PPI I was taking and I am working on other types of treatment for my GERD. I really feel a lot better and still have issues with my magnesium levels but with increased levels in my diet and supplements things seem to be working out. Long story short, nutrition is everything and don't take it lightly. This is a good channel to help with decisions with your diet.

      Magnesium is hard to get most food have a little bit. Pumpkin seeds are like 15% which is the one of highest amount in a single food.

    As a dietitian, I do not envy the task of trying to assign hierarchical rankings for intact foods. They're almost all qualitatively different, and I'd probably...ahem... _go nuts..._ putting such a video together. My rule of eating nuts is - if they're fresh and on sale, they're my favorite! 😆

      I gotta say the ranking is easily the hardest part. Trying to quantify qualities that were probably never meant to be quantified. And while for the most part I feel pretty confident in where I rank things, I don't think I've ever been shy in saying that it could be very different from person to person depending on their goals and how they're individual body reacts to what they put in they're mouth. I think the best thing these videos have done is given general knowledge and opened people up to the idea that there's a lot of ways to skin the cat and that if they're able they should be learning about what works best for them. And if thats all I accomplish, I am more than happy with that.

    I've been recently snacking on walnuts lately not knowing if they were actually good or not so it nice to know that it's on the star tier!
    In fact, the two nuts I've been snacking on have been almonds and walnuts so I'm very glad to see them on the star tier and that I made the right choices haha. ☺

    Very useful, thanks. Acorns - I won't go through cracking shells + days of leaching just for free floury nuts. tried with a handful out of interest, confirmed not worth doing in normal times but useful to know how to do.

      A mushrooms tier list would be super interesting.
      In most western cuisine you only see white button or portabella, but there are a TON of edible mushrooms out there mostly known for their use in Asian cuisine for their umami flavor like shiitake.

    My favorite nut are pistacios. I love to eat them with salt, but im gonna try to eat more waltnuts since they seemengly have such an insane quantity of omega 3. Awesome video, i love your content

      Only problem with walnut Ala omega 3 is it needs to be converted to epa and dha, men have 5% conversation. Women have 10%.

    Love the videos. I grew up on video games, so stat sheets and tier lists make learning incredibly more easy and interesting for me. Thank you. You have a standard of caloric intake per topic, would it be hard to give an average price per gram or ounce? It’d be really helpful, but I also understand the extra research and variable price points.

    Nice. I pack a mixture of almonds, macadamia nuts, and Brazil nuts (from most to least in terms of number of pieces) into small Tupperware cups. When I need a snack when I'm on the go, I'll have a protein bar, a banana, deez nuts, and water.

      Stop eating cashews and almonds immediately and your health might improve. They are off the chart for oxalates, which are some of the most harmful things you can put in your body.

      @@Howitgoes799 Anti-nutrients aren't a problem on a balanced diet. For example, phytic acid (which blocks iron resorption) is overcome by Vitamin C.

      That isn't enough, you've got to soak/germinate them with something acidic like ACV.

    Thanks for including the tree nut allergy information. I feel like I'm always having to explain to people that I'm allergic to hazelnuts and walnuts and that this does include almonds but doesn't include peanuts.

    Pumpkin, flax and chia seeds will make it in another video right? Best nut is cashews, that delicious creaminess and sweetness can't be beaten. Also great for making vegan cheeses!

    I have been watching these videos because I'll be moving to a piece of property I bought, just. Over an acre and we want to grow some of our own food. We have a river on two sides and enough sun to produce. So we will start small and make a list of what we can manage. I used to think preppers and home garden food growers were a little exagerrated. I learned that they were right the whole time. The type of nutrition u can get is crazy. And way cheaper

      I think because they usually are salted. Hard to find them without it. Soak them for a few minutes and rinse off the salt

    I've heard mention of a study from some years back that found that consuming an ounce of nuts daily (including peanuts) lowered the risk of death from all causes by 30%. I don't know the specifics or if that study has held up over time, but ever since I've made it a point to try to eat an ounce of nuts a day. (A quick search turned up a lot of interesting stuff, all of which seems to support a lowered mortality risk the more often nuts are consumed.)

    Harvesting my walnut trees right now as a matter of fact, definitely the best on this list. One thing I would clarify is that the omega 3's in walnuts are ALAs. The body *can* convert them into EPA and DHA (the omega 3's you find in fish), but the conversion process is poor. And when it's not converted, it's mostly just used as energy like other fats. It's still a very good source and definitely the best at the end of the day.

      @@soniathegemini1593 not really you’re only getting a maximum of 15% of the omega-3 but that’s if you have amazing genetics the average absorption is going to be less than 5%. If you’re vegan I would first consider getting algae based omega 3 supplements because they have DHA. Fish or krill oil are your best bet for omega3 though

    Great video, I would have put peanuts at A tier as most of the downsides are dependent on personal allergies, which would obviously make any food F tier for anyone with that allergy. Peanut allergies are also not as common in the rest of the world as they are in the US for some reason...

    Every morning I've been having nut butter on my lightly toasted cin/raisin english muffins for several years now; specifically almond and cashew butter. Lightly sprinkled with flax seed and cinnamon, and with my 1 cup of coffee. I used to do walnuts, pecans and pumpkin seeds and unshelled sunflower seeds, and am back with all except sunflower currently. I love pistachios too but they're a bit high priced so have currently done without. Also do peanut butter for the occasional snack...in those smuckers uncrustables.

    I'm nuts for nuts. Good video. Slightly different perspective than what I'm used to and you had some nutritional info that most people skip over. Your final list is roughly what I've been using as well (although I tend to look at net carbs in ratio to fat/protein, not just calories). My main nut of choice is the plain old unsalted walnut! However I tend to buy a giant tub and mix 50% walnuts with other healthy nuts to make them more interesting to eat daily.
    One point of constructive criticism ... you might consider doing bulleted lists left-justified. I found it very hard to read and understand when child bullets were "under" a parent bullet and so on. the info was terrific though. And with lists that long, perhaps highlighting the BEST "pro" on the list and the WORST "con"? It might be hard to chose since people are concerned with different things, but you have already chosen the tiers based on some core attributes. Very minor nit pick, great content!

    I love cashews! Glad to see them in A-Tier. They have a naturally buttery kind of taste. I especially like them roasted without salt. Sometimes it can be hard to find unsalted at the stores, so when I do find them, I usually buy them.

    About the recommendation for serving size (28g), once soaked and dried, nuts can be significantly lighter in weight. However I guess this is advantageous as you don't want to eat as many raw nuts because of the phytic acid.
