- While come may see them as just calories in a can, beans are one of the most foundational foods on Earth, with some cultures having records of harvested them for the tens of thousands of years. Beans are a deceptively critical part of a balanced nutritious diet around the world and are finally getting their time in the spotlight. Time to rank them and find out which ones should be the base of your burrito bowls, and which ones really are just canned calories.
What I Would Change:
Yes, Lentils should have probably been on this list. While they are currently in my Seed Tier List, if they were on this list, I would have given them an A-Tier placement.
Also, Peas are in the Vegetable Tier List

I believe you may have forgotten to mention that jellybeans have the lowest amount of tannins and oxalates requiring no soaking, as well as being very high in serotonin enhancing chemicals.

They are the ultimate bean to me! Good refried, good as a bean dip, good in any bean dish but baked beans. Those need navy pea beans!

Also, cooking cold pressed olive oil defeats the purpose of it being cold pressed. Don’t cook with it, top your food with it afterwards.

@@Srry4RollingRocking canola oil should be in the good tier too, it’s high in monounsaturated fats and low in saturated fats. It’s also flavour neutral and has a good smoke point for high heat cooking

As a vegan in a country with a lot of bean dishes, I was really rooting and cheering for some beans to go high on the list. Fortunately, my favorites are all in the 2 highest ranks (except for Black Eyed Peas, that I love but are B tier). Great video!
These videos are incredibly interesting. Through this you can also see how and why different cultures have specific health issues/benefits due to their diet. You truly are what you eat.

Your fruits and vegetable tier lists made me get into the habbit of cooking and eating a lot healthier because I saw food that you ranked to be extremely healthy and realized that I actually really enjoy eating a lot of them. And your other video on how to fix bad posture from sitting a lot has also given me instant results. It was like TH-cam sent you to fix some of the shortcomings that could be easily improved in my life. Keep up the good work!

Seeds would make a great list. Sunflower seeds were commonly snacked when I was a kid. I've always leaned more towards pumpkin seeds myself

Yeah, man - Back in the 1980s, whenever my dad was sitting on our living room couch watching tv, he _ALWAYS_ was eating still shelled sunflower seeds! Totally addicted haha. Idk why that went out of fashion.

I am hooked on these videos. Such valuable content! I love the tiering method and the geekiness of all the details. I have been drinking more tea lately and am curious if different types of tea have any nutritional benefits. Also, curious about the whole spice and herb thing, the craze over turmeric.
Authentic baked beans, which use black strap molasses, are among the best things I've ever tasted. I cooked them once from scratch using great northerns. It took six hours to cook them at low temperature but so worth it. I think I'll do that again soon.
Soak them over night next time, its part or my bedtime routine these days. Healthier and takes about 45 mins to cook once they’ve been soaked.
@@beermilkshake Oh I soak all my beans. But an authentic baked bean recipe is low temp for a long time. Best flavor in the world.

Apparently, Henry Heinz popularized the dish and made it a mainstream food item. But canned baked beans taste nothing like Colonial ones.

No lentils or peas/snap beans? Come on! A few more exotic suggestions: pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus), stink beans (Parkia speciosa), string beans (the really long ones from Southeast Asia), technically peanuts are beans too

There are so many beans I never heard of before in this list, it's amazing. And there's still more beans out there than are in this list.
One bean that's missing is the (scarlet) runner bean/multiflora bean (sometimes also called butter bean, but that might also refer to the lima bean).
It's used commonly here in Austria and I was surprised that it's quite niche everywhere else and therefore probably didn't make it into the video.

What we in America call butter beans are just Lima beans, exact same thing however runner/multiflora beans are very different. This causes some crazy arguments here in the states about whether Limas and butter beans are the same or not.

I am so glad I watched this video. I'm a vegetarian and this opened by eyes to some beans I'd never heard of, as well as a more clear understanding of how I can get more of the nutrients that are harder to come by in plants (Not just protein. I promise I get enough protein). Also, I appreciate the Lector reference and other jokes:)

Some interesting ideas you could do: dairy product tier list, cooking oil/fat tier list, grain tier list (rice, different wheats, etc., maybe include flour-based products?), beverage tier list (milk, thea, water, different additives for beverages, etc.), etc. I'm essentially using your list to make my own short-list for potential meal preps, so i'd be interested in seeing any and all of those haha.

well dairy product tier is an easy one: ranking from bad to worse to worst … do your research, there is nothing good about dairy products. hint: when you do lookup some studies, make sure to exclude studies funded by the dairy industry

Wheat is as old in cultivation as quinoa. "Ancient grains" is silly marketing hype. I don't like marketing, as it is a business built largely around deception and often logical fallacies. Why not call these psuedograins (which are edible, starchy seeds from outside the grass and legume families, like buckwheat and quinoa) and "obscure grasses" (to cover spelt, teff, and maybe some not currently cultivated, like Indian ricegrass).

Black beans, chickpeas and kidney beans are the best :P Chickpeas for hummus and curry's, black and kidney beans for chili and Mexican style food like wraps and soups.
Everyone should include at least couple simple delicious simple foods like hummus, chickpea curry, be it plain tomato curry or something more, and chili. Good thing about all of these is that you can cook big batch and keep it in fridge.

Quick question. Do the differences in lectin concentration between different legume varieties really matter, when most/all of the lectin content has already been eliminated (by the soaking+cooking process) before consumption? I was under the impression that lectins are the reason you feel sick (like, FOOD POISONING level sick) after eating raw/improperly cooked legumes only...how much do these differences matter under normal consumption circumstances?

All beans are legumes. Lentils are also legumes.
They are also eaten in similar ways to each other, for similar reasons.
Hence why i thought they should be included in the ""bean" category for his tierlist because they literally dont fit anywhere else.
Yeah, nutritional and how they are eaten and through Close relationship this would have Made Sense, Just Like vegetables fruit where included with vegetables, Not fruits!

Great vid. It's a relief to know the antinutrients are negated when soaked and cooked. ***I'd like to see a nutritional ranking of cheeses. I was disappointed in that goat cheese I bought at the grocery store deli. It had very little nutrients on the package. Tasted good though.
The only issue with soaking beans is that some of the good nutritional content leeches out into the water too. So just keep it in mind, soaking may reduce some of the bad things but it will reduce some of the good things too.
Cheese and dairy products in general are not healthy.

It's worth mentioning that "cooking properly" means they have to be BOILED. Slow cookers that cook at lower temperatures are not good enough, and kidney beans 🫘 in particular can make you ill and put you in the ER if you slow cook them. Just use a regular pot or a pressure cooker.
Ideally you'd start with slow cooking (deactivates more of the antinutrients and difficult to digest sugars) and then switch it to high heat at the end to get a good texture bean with minimal antinutrients.
Would have loved to see natto on this list. I always hear that natto is like a super food and its pretty unique.
Considering natto is fermented soybeans, you could pretty safely put them in s tier (or if you're worried abt fermentation for some reason, A at the minimum)
It would be pretty similar to soy with more vitamin K and slightly lower calories, anti nutrients, and carbs.
It's just fermented soy beans.
When making bean soup, I like to add lentils, split peas, wheat berries, barley and farro, or whatever of those I might have in the pantry. Also, I like my bean soup spicy, so I migh add different types of chilies, or dried red peppers. I never put jelley beans in my soup, but love to mix in some lima beans. And add a little oilive oil in the soup. Garlic and onion are a necessity.
I appreciate the work you've done in making food tiers! How do you consider this quandary: How recently have the mineral amounts (or other nutrients) in foods been measured, knowing that plants only absorb what the depleted soils on various mega-farms have to offer.
