1 Tablespoon pulverized eggshell 1 Tbsp distilled white vinegar Wait 30 min until stops foaming Add all of it to 1 gallon water Water when plants start flowering
Great video bro, thank you. Being a lay chemist for over 50 years I would recommend let the vinegar-eggshell mix sit at least 2 hours for the reaction to complete and neutralize all the vinegar and dissolve as much calcium as possible. Personally I let it sit overnight. Doesn't hurt
Would adding vinigar to dolomite lime give the same result? Both are mostly Calcium-carbonate, right? And is it soluble in water, if so, would a ppm measurement give a trustworthy number?
@@xantimusgreenthumb7342 Yes it will affect PH but only in a good sense to counter the acidity of organic fertilizer like cow manure. It actually makes the nitrogen more readily available. Of course don't overdo it. There's several youtube videos on how to use it correctly. Personally I've always used lime
Excellent! I'll let it sit for two hours. Also, I'm not clear if I should dilute the calcium water or I just use it as is directly on the soil with my tomatoes.
Excellent and for sure show it off. Thanks for watching and if interested...This is how you can support my creation of videos. I really like your DIY series. I started gardening three years ago. I watched a tons of your videos to learn how to grow vegetables at beginning. I made two tote grow box following your instructions on the first year of gardening and it works magically, so I'm still using it every year to germinate seeds indoor. Big thanks for making gardening easier and more enjoyable. Looking forward more great DIY ideas from you!

I did have blossom end rot on my container tomatoes last year and also in the garden I had some tomatoes that had it. Not all of my tomatoes had this though and I ended up with some great tomatoes from the beds. This year I followed your recipe for used soil and added all of the things you mentioned. I am hoping that the lime and all of the other stuff will create a great garden! I love your videos and love all of the home made recipes, awesome!
You grow., you learn and you get better. I am still doing that. Just FYI now that you have lime in the garden, just keep moisture even. You really shouldn't need more calcium via lime. It can change pH. But you can give them eggshells like this at point tomatoes start showing. Good luck.
This happens to the best of us like Gary said😏. So sorry to hear you're having trouble with blossom end rot as most gardeners experience this one time or another. Using eggshells really helps to give the plant calcium it needs like has sharing. I've been using this method for years and it works great to help with blossom end rot.
I have had problems in the past with blossom end rot. Even with rigorous watering routines and great soil it can really still occur. The one thing I have found to solve this problem and make my organic garden go crazy is Neptune's Fish hydrolysate. All it takes is a small amount in a gallon. Feed you plants when they start to flower every 2 weeks. Bananas. Insect frass is great too. For some reason the hydrolysate really helps the plant uptake the calcium.
I've watched a lot of videos on this topic and you are the only one who has shown a way to get around the problem of the calcium not being immediately available. This was so neat to learn, thank you!
Another effective solution is Calcium Nitrate. We sell that at our seed shop. It's not organic but it is a reaction of nitric acid and calcium carbonate. It frees up the nitrogen, just like using the vinegar. Good luck. Earn 15% by becoming a Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop Affiliate. I let my egg shells dry out overnight then use a mortal and pestle. Takes a long time of get the eggs powered. I like your idea of the grinder. I don’t drink coffee but I may buy a grinder for my plants sake!
I did this based on your last video but with your 1:1 ratio in this video. I let it sit for 3 days then put in hole where planting. Was scared they would be dead the next day, but no, they are happy.
@DesertSnakezerke1042 I used a stick blender. Dried out the eggs. Then crushed them by hand so fit in a tall cup. Then blended with stick blender. Good enough for me! Easy to leave with Vinegar or Lemon juice for 1-2 weeks if you cannot get a find powder.
Thank you for your all your efforts into preparing a well-explained video. It makes such a difference to getting a good result. Calcium as a fertilizer supplement is useful for a wide range of vegetables including eggplants, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, spinach , broccoli and peppers. Would you be able to advise how much of the calcium-vinegar-H20 solution should you give to each plant from these vegetables every month (presumably starting just before they begin to develop the respective vegetable)? Thanks again for your sharing your tried and tested knowledge and wish you success with this enterprise.
I have about 15 lbs of eggshells save for the planting holes of my pepper and tomato plants. I have yet to grind them, first I need to buy a coffee grinder LOL. I have always put eggshells in my planting holes and have never had blossom end rot (knock on wood). Nice looking seedlings, especially that pepper to the right of the screen. Have a good day Gary. Lucas
That works. If you drop them yearly in your ground, you get the on going slow release benefit. I wasn't 100% clear but eggshells are a slow release, by adding the vinegar, you make it fast release for calcium. The container plants can get it right away and don't need to wait for soil life to break the shells down into a free from of calcium.
Thank you for this video, Gary. We planted our tomatoes with fertilizer, worm castings, epsom salts, ground up egg shells plus bone meal, and are using a fertilizer that supposedly has calcium & magnesium included, but I'm noticing BER on some of my tomatoes as well as signs of magnesium deficiency. We have clay soil, which I read can tend to make soil have too much potassium, making it difficult for plants to absorb the nutrients they need. I'm going to test my soil to help for next year, but in the meantime, I'm going to give them this (I already have my slurry sitting), along with a tbsp Epsom salts in the morning to see if I can save my plants.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Sorry, just saw your response. My Early Girl had it really bad, and a couple of my San Marzano plants had it for a while, but this did the trick. Thanks again!

Gary I have to say, this was an amazing video and has helped me a lot to understand the importance of this calcium!. I recently figured it out on my own with adding eggshells into the soil and it has helped me quite a bit to maintain a healthy Garden and to get produce I'm looking for. Thanks to you and this video, I Now know the meaning behind it and it makes it a lot easier! I have to say, really great information even for somebody like me that has been growing for years!👍 Thanks so much love watching your Channel
This is a very great, unique, and helpful video. I learned a lot from this. I also love planting and I have tomatoes too. So, I will apply what I learned in this video to my plants especially to my tomato plants. Thanks a lot for sharing this video. Have a great day!
Love your channel Gary. It's my go to for anything I may need answers for. That said, my question is this - can this be sprayed directly on the foliage for immediate absorption? No matter how much I try to stay ahead of BER, it gets some of my San Marzano's every year. I do know they're more prone. Thank you!
thank you for this very useful video. You can also try this recipe: take eggshells, sterilize them in the microwave, grind them like you do, add as you do but not vinegar but lemon juice, leave a night, and recover the juice, mix it in the same proposal that you made it with water . This may be consumed in hydroponic nutrient, or you can at least once every 6 months as a fortifier (against osteoporosis)
Calcium Carbonate (eggshells) reacts with Acetic Acid (Vinegar ~5%) and gives out CO2 (bubbles), Calcium Acetate (the stuff you want) and H2O (water). Vinegar is completely neutralized after the reaction has stopped overnight and turn into water IF/AS LONG AS there's some eggshell left over in the solution. If vinegar completely dissolved the eggshell, the resulting solution is still acidic, so add more eggshells. 6mg of eggshell more or less completely dissolves in 100g of supermarket consumer food grade vinegar ~5%. So, maximum 72mg of calcium can dissolve in 1.2kg of vinegar (two bottles). Dilute the Calcium Acetate (liquid calcium, the stuff you want) to about 1 : whatever ratio you want. For me I do it at 1 part Calcium Acetate : 30 parts of water.

I used expired milk on my container tomato plant. I had some blossom end rot and saw someone mention using milk. Well, it worked instantly. No more blossom end rot for this whole season. I have reapplied the milk every 3 to 4 weeks and I still have 30 tomatoes on my one container plant. I will be moving it to our enclosed patio in a couple of days as the night temps will hover near freezing for the latter part of the week.

Another plus for this recipe is you can use it to add CO2 to your plant environment in it is in a grow tent. Often, plants are not getting enough carbon dioxide in a closed environment to grow their full potential. Mix this solution into a quart container and put into your tent.Do this immediately, for the chemical reaction starts as soon as you mix. As the chemical reaction occurs it releases CO2 and humidity(from the water) into the air. After the reaction is done (a day or two), you can pour the fertilizer into your soil.

Good DIY to make Calcium Acetate, but one needs to be very careful when mixing these components. Any extra vinegar and you'll be left with unreacted acetic acid that will mess up with the pH of the soil
True. That is why I wanted to give the recipe like this and include letting it sit 30 minutes. And LOL diluting it with 1 gallon of water. For this series I want to go more into the recipe and talk about potential damages from sprays.
@@tasha3757 , it won't. It takes a very long time for the shells to dissolve and make a difference. People mix unprocessed egg shells in the compost all the time.

Best to just let your Egg Shells sit in Vinegar or Lemon Juice for longer. If you can add 15ml Vinegar to 20-30ml of Egg Shells, this will ensure all vinegar is used up and does not affect the acidity of your soil. So keep mixture for 30 days and then combine with 3.75L of water and water garden. I use one watering can I made larger holes in to fit the egg shells out of the watering can. I just fill up the watering can and add another ratio of pre-mixed and neutralised Egg Shells. Much better this way for your plants. Just repeat every 6-12 months. Good drainage for soil too! :D >>> CALCIUM PLANT FERTILIZER

You can sprinkle it on soil like 2 or 3 tablespoons. Or put it in water. You can damage the plants with using too much so you can really use it as you see fit.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks for the video! You showed how you mixed the eggshell-vinegar mixture in gallon of water. Do you use that one gallon mixture in the video directly to water your soil or do you dilute it further in water to make a less concentrated solution?
@@PotPoTD im here for that answer too but 1 tbsp per gallon looks realistic. A bottled product used 2 tsp per gallon so i figure home diy would be less concentrated. When in doubt, start low go slow. You cant hurt a plant with calcium, unlike humans.
Question. Going back to Chem 101, wouldn't it be safer to use too much eggshell, say 2 or 3 tablespoons, making vinegar the limiting reagent? Even a slight excess of acetic acid will build up in your soil over time, acidifying it. You'll just end up with more calcium in the shell, which you can compost. Lord knows worms love eggshells. PS. Love the baking idea. I just run eggshells under hot water, which may or may not kill salmonella. Just as easy to run them in my air fryer for about 15 minutes and kill the beasties dead.
You can error that way but you can mix outcome in a gallon of water and pour it on plants or water it in. The risk is very low. Good luck. > Even a slight excess of acetic acid will build up in your soil over time, acidifying it. This is false; acetic acid will both dilute and wash away quickly. To understand this more, research pine needles and acidity.
@@spiralofhope Pine needles and vinegar are different animals. Pine needles are complex biological aggregates with ample nitrogen and carbon that will compost down. The interaction with soil microbiota creates chemical reactions which buffer and utilize the excess hydrogen (the H+ ion is what defines an acid). Vinegar is already simplified organic matter: usually, grapes are made into wine, and the wine into vinegar by yeast and bacteria. In the process, skns and pulp are removed, stopping the full composting from happening. Acetic acid is a biochemical resultant of that fermentation process. It is a straight acid. The water in vinegar will evaporate, turning the acetic acid into a salt, which biology will not consume. Like all salts, it's "sticky" due to its reactive nature, interacting with water that sticks to biological matter. That acetic acid salt will ALWAYS become an acid (with excess H+ ions) when combined with water. So if you add excess acetic acid year after year, the salt will build up and acidify the soil over the long haul. BTW, I've used industrial-strength vinegar to naturally acidify the soil for a blueberry patch. It was cheaper than a typical soil acidifying agent sold in a garden center. It took a while to get the spoil acid stabilized in year 1, but 3 springs later, the soil pH hasn't changed and we've added no additional acidified. Though I suppose it could have something to do with the heavy clay soil I started with.
Great video. Why do we need to cook the egg shells before adding to the soil or compost? I just let them dry out on the counter , grind them up then add to soil and composter. Is there a problem doing it this way ? Thanks and have a great day.
I use a large open mouthed jar with no lid which I keep at the back on the top of my fridge. There's always a bit of heat there from the fridge working so the egg shells go onto the jar where they dry out naturally and usually fairly quickly. Once the jar is full of shells I crush them all down fine with the handle of a wooden spoon then continue to fill the jar with shells. Eventually I remember to sprinkle them into the compost heap.

Great video! Thank you! I’m a little confused on what you mentioned about the 5 gallon container. Are you adding the gallon of calcium water to another 5 gallons of water further diluting it? I would really like to understand this dilution. But frankly the explanation is vague. Exactly which dilution gets added to exactly which 5 gallons. Thanks
Yeah, like in a Topsy Turvy like container. For the record, those have never worked for me. They dry out WAY too fast in the Texas heat. Then get fungus because water is running down the leaves. I’ve had some prolific greenery but never any fruit. Waste of time.
Actually you just gave me an idea, My containers are all full and growing and I still have some starts I had no room for. I was just gonna toss but I may try this. As I understand it Alvina you just plant upside down in a container that has a hole in bottom then Id put some paper or cloth to stop the dirt from falling out, then fill with moist soil. As someone said hanging baskets dry out quickly so larger containers are better with water retaining soil.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) ~ Watching all your videos I turned my yellowing & spotted tomatoes back to brilliant deep green thank you Gary for your helpful videos 😊 & I found Epsom salt 😎 my dad bought but never used.
just a note. You absolutely have to have acid available to break down the "carbonate" part of the calcium carbonate for the calcium to be in any way bioavailable to plants. This includes tossing egg shells whole or minimally crushed into compost or into the ground. If your compost or the ground isn't acidic at least at 3 or 4, it's a pointless exercise and won't amend the soil to any useful amount. As a reference, vinegar is around a pH of 3, urine is 6, distilled water is neural at 7. Egg shells are incredibly durable and are hard to break down and so they will take more than months, sometimes years depending on conditions, to release calcium into the medium it is in unless there is acid present. Breakdown into bioavailable calcium will slow the closer to neutral your soil is and it will stop completely at 6.8 ph. Pulverize at a minimum if you want to toss into compost, but for adding to tomatoes, the vinegar solution will provide the quickest availablility to plants, usually within 48 hrs. ✌️🤟

What home remedy might you have for leaf footed bugs that like to attack your tomatoes and puncture holes in them? I have this serious issue with them every year starting by about the end of April.
Try using Neem Oil spray. Mix 5-10ml Neem with a splash of detergent to make Emulsion. Mix. Add more detergent if neem floats to surface. Add 1-5ml of Peppermint Oil. You will need to experiment! Once mixed well, add 50ml warm/hot water. Mix again. THEN add 4.5L of water in Pump Sprayer. Shake well. Peppermint oil and Neem will make all pests run a mile!

Add all of it to 1 gallon water

Thank you!
Thank you
Thank you, I thought you stock it for a month, puede din pala , basta wait lang subside yung bubbles..I will follow this thanks
How much of the solution to each plant?
Great video bro, thank you. Being a lay chemist for over 50 years I would recommend let the vinegar-eggshell mix sit at least 2 hours for the reaction to complete and neutralize all the vinegar and dissolve as much calcium as possible. Personally I let it sit overnight. Doesn't hurt
Would adding vinigar to dolomite lime give the same result? Both are mostly Calcium-carbonate, right? And is it soluble in water, if so, would a ppm measurement give a trustworthy number?
@@xantimusgreenthumb7342 Dolomite is already in a bio-available composition so plants can absorb it just the way it is.
@@craigbratcher1409 Just asking, because carbonate could potentially alter ph where sulphate won´t...? (thanks for your quick response).
Excellent solution to grow my first 3lb tomato.Have taken photo to show off to my gardening friends. I lived in Manchester Connecticut.

I've used eggshells but the addition of vinegar gives it a whole new twist! I'll be trying that for sure.
Patches O'R never use vinegar
@@idogardening4430 why not use vinegar
In what other way have you used eggshells? Can you tell me
Try Lemon Juice too. >>> CALCIUM PLANT FERTILIZER
Also, you can dissolve an Antacid tablet, in a Gallon of water and spray. Easy and cheap.
Thanks!
Good luck.

I let my egg shells dry out overnight then use a mortal and pestle. Takes a long time of get the eggs powered. I like your idea of the grinder. I don’t drink coffee but I may buy a grinder for my plants sake!
So much easier..i do my dolomite lime pellets, alfalfa tea grinding.. And my eggs for my wormies and plants :)
Mortar and Pestle? Stick blender? Normal blender? Rub 2 bricks together?
Gary thanks for the awesome video and the way you explain how it works. God bless your family
I did this based on your last video but with your 1:1 ratio in this video. I let it sit for 3 days then put in hole where planting. Was scared they would be dead the next day, but no, they are happy.
The 1:1 ration letting it sit will work. Dilute it in a gallon and this is really safe.
Put the shells in a big bowl or a bucket. Then use a jelly jar to grind them, they grind up very fine.
Lucas
LucasGrowsBest I actually chop mine in a blender. It’s a small blender though
Interesting.
Whatever works! Hey check out my channel, I am an avid young gardener looking to grow my channel.
.
Yeah have plenty in your soil. I wouldn't add too much more. Which tomato varieties have it. ROMAs always seem to get it.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Sorry, just saw your response. My Early Girl had it really bad, and a couple of my San Marzano plants had it for a while, but this did the trick. Thanks again!
Start a Worm Hotel (flip top bin w/ 10+ holes drilled in bottom) with handful of worms plus some old food scraps. Or buy proper compost worms. Will really help with clay and balanced nutrients.

Excellent. As always thanks for watching. I always learn new stuff. This year it was hydrogen peroxide.
You can also try this recipe:
take eggshells,
sterilize them in the microwave,
grind them like you do,
add as you do but not vinegar but lemon juice,
leave a night,
and recover the juice, mix it in the same proposal that you made it with water .
This may be consumed in hydroponic nutrient, or you can at least once every 6 months as a fortifier (against osteoporosis)
Thanks

@Fern8580 Great idea! METRIC Recipe! >>> CALCIUM PLANT FERTILIZER
Thanks so much for the science

This will answer my question. "5 gallon" is out of the question. I will follow this formula instead. 😊
What are 6mg eggshell powder and 100g vinegar 5% strength) in metric volume, please?
I used expired milk on my container tomato plant. I had some blossom end rot and saw someone mention using milk. Well, it worked instantly. No more blossom end rot for this whole season. I have reapplied the milk every 3 to 4 weeks and I still have 30 tomatoes on my one container plant. I will be moving it to our enclosed patio in a couple of days as the night temps will hover near freezing for the latter part of the week.
Great solution.

I get most of mine from making egg salad sandwiches!

That is very easily avoidable by making sure you are on the plus side with the CaCo3. The un-dissolved egg shells will not do any harm.
@@ciprianionel4247 except increase the pH once it breaks down.....
@@tasha3757 , it won't. It takes a very long time for the shells to dissolve and make a difference. People mix unprocessed egg shells in the compost all the time.

Gary: will you please clarify your instructions regarding the 5-gallon bucket you mention? Do you further dilute the gallon concoction in a 5-gallon bucket, or use as is? If applied during normal watering, what dosage is appropriate per watering? Based on the number of comments, this is a general source of confusion. Thanks for the video.
I don't understand that part about the 5 gallon. Do you pour the 1 gallon mixed concoction into a 5 gallon water?
Absolutely great info ❤

Hi! Great tip! Can we use this on other plants as well?
You can for sure
Great video Gary!
Any idea why my jalapeno pepper plants are only 4 inches tall and they are over a month old?
They are under a full spectrum grow light
There could be a hundred reasons why! That is like asking someone if they know why is it raining in NYC today!
They are dwarf? LOL
Try feeding them a little epsom salts mixed with dirt near the stalk then water lightly to soak in. Peppers and tomatoes both LOVE this! Happy Gardening!
Mr. Pilarchik can one mix this up in advance in a 5 gallon bucket for future waterings? Asking because I'm disabled and have my containers on my balcony.
Yeah this can be set up early. Good luck.
Thanks. This is how you can support my creation of videos.

my son caught a few catfish this past weekend. Instead of dumping fish remains in ditch, I dug a trench about 15" deep in my garden where my next row will be. Sounds like good idea to me. Is that a good idea? thanks for another informative video !

What is ratio for water?
@@dana102083 hi dana 102083, is it safe for the human to consume a little as calcium supplement, if so what is the dosage, please ?
Thank you for gardening insights.. I enjoy your tutorials.
Glad to help.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) I just order neem oil and a t shirt from your website.
Thanks. Very appreciated. They will go out tomorrow!
Good luck.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Liked and subscribed. I love your channel. You da man.
> Even a slight excess of acetic acid will build up in your soil over time, acidifying it.
This is false; acetic acid will both dilute and wash away quickly. To understand this more, research pine needles and acidity.
The acid in vinegar would be enough to kill Salmonella.
Hi,,enjoyed your vid ,,thank you for the tips,, Cheers,,,stay safe,,,,

Great video.
Why do we need to cook the egg shells before adding to the soil or compost?
I just let them dry out on the counter , grind them up then add to soil and composter.
Is there a problem doing it this way ?
Thanks and have a great day.
I do it more to dry it. Helps with pulverizing. But not needed.
Thanks so much for making this. I have been wondering if you could do this with ground-up oyster shell.
Hmmm. Probably but not sure how much acidity it take to dissolve some of it

Question: If you bake to kill organisms and bacteria that might be on the eggshells, wouldn't vinegar do the same anyways?
Great video! Thank you! I’m a little confused on what you mentioned about the 5 gallon container. Are you adding the gallon of calcium water to another 5 gallons of water further diluting it? Or are you saying to add the egg shell / vinegar mixture to a 5 gallon container instead of the gallon shown? Thank you for the clarification. I do appreciate your time! 😊
You can add some to a container with soil. Or you can put some in a gallon of water and water it in. Just make sure the holes in the can let particle though. You can do this many ways.

Can you do a video on growing tomatoes upside down in a diy container? That would be great!
upside down ??????????
Jim Anders yep!
No.
Cool idea.
Yeah time beat blossom end root in the but this year! 😎
Start early and prevent it. Consistent watering is usually more important believe it or not.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) ~ Watching all your videos I turned my yellowing & spotted tomatoes back to brilliant deep green thank you Gary for your helpful videos 😊 & I found Epsom salt 😎 my dad bought but never used.
So good to hear success!
just a note.
Thanks

I use microwave instead of heating oven?
Yep. It make no difference. Some people just let them dry. Just dont cook them as they burn and stink.
In the old days when there are no chemicals, Chinese use egg shells for fertilize their plants. My plants were dying so I use the leftover egg shells from cracking eyes, put them on the top of the soils, my plants are alive and healthy! Cheap, healthy way to save a plant!
Thanks.

Could I use water instead
What home remedy might you have for leaf footed bugs that like to attack your tomatoes and puncture holes in them? I have this serious issue with them every year starting by about the end of April.
Hmmm. I don't know. Masking the tomatoes with pepper oils or scent can help with insects like that but I don't have any experience.
Epic!! Gonna try this with my orchids.
Good luck.
