      Welding with two separated shoulders will be the least of ToT problems trying to find out what welding rod he needs to use to reattach his testicles and gentleman sausage now that will be the problem. Perhaps ToT should consider sleeping on his stomach until a suitable amount of roses, chocolates, and shiny jewelry has been bestowed to ToT “old wife” and he completed the fabrication of his chain mail jockey shorts otherwise ToT might need to change his initials to JWB (John Wayne Bobbit)

  • @MirandaAntonelli

    This Old Tony, the decibel system is a logarithmic scale. Even small drops are noticeable, especially in the center of our hearing (human hearing range is roughly 20 Hz to 20 kHz).
    That spike at around 1900 HZ is well within our range. It's approximately A_6, which is at the high end of a soprano's vocal range. It looks like you knocked it down by 11 dB (I'm reading that as -30 dB to -41 dB). That's a large drop. 11 dB is like the drop from a loud stereo to a normal conversation.
    If you're interested in the math, let L be the change in decibels and r be the ratio of new power divided by old power. The acoustic power equation is L = 20 * log_10 (r). (That 20 is there for more complicated calibration reasons with other scales.) So, the power ratio is, r = 10^(-11/20) ~= .28. You knocked 72% of the power out of that tone. Well done. :)
    Even the low end has gotten a respectable drop. It looks like the peak noise level was around 120 Hz, dropping from -22 dB to -24.5 dB or so, which is a 25% drop in power.
    And if that's not enough nerdiness for you, I'll offer this: human perception of sound (and light) is logarithmic. That is, our brains perceive a change of 10 dB to be roughly a doubling (or halving) of loudness. Our brains' internal logarithm mechanic is what gives us such a wide range of perceptible sound and light intensities.

      Uhh, dB is 1/2 at -3dB, 1/4th at -6dB, and 1/10th at -10dB, not halved at 10db, but 10 times quieter. He attenuated the fundamentals above 1khz by 8 and 16 times respectively. EDIT: Yeah, "perceived" makes a difference, but strictly speaking in dB what I said is correct.

    • @MirandaAntonelli
      @MirandaAntonelli 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @@eformance You know, I remembered the +/- 3 dB being doubling/halving too, but when I looked up the definition of the acoustic decibel scale I found a 20 instead of the expected 10. I was wondering if it had to do with an rms definition somewhere in the acoustic pressure measurements.
      Edit: or a square inside the logarithm... the log would make that come out as a 2. I think that's it. If power (big P) is proportional to pressure (little p) squared, then it's:
      L = 10 log(P_2/P_1) = 10 log(p_2^2 / p_1^2) = 20 log(p_2/p_1).
      So my original comment is correct for pressure not power. That makes more sense to me now. Thanks.

    Hey Tony. I do those spectrum analysis things for the Navy. Granted what I deal with is underwater and the reference level is different, but what your spectrograms show is an 8x decrease in the level at 800Hz and a 16x reduction in noise level for the 1800Hz signal. The overall noise envelope seems to be roughly the same but it IS lower. Think of it this way, a reduction by 3dB is reducing total noise at a given frequency by HALF. Your two loudest sources show about a 9 and 12 dB reduction respectively. I would have to have the original recordings to do a full analysis on just what sources are causing the bulk of the noise if you want to quiet them......but then again, that’s not the point of motorcycles is it?

Human hearing considers a 10db difference to be twice as loud. Although you increased the some low frequencies a bit, you did manage to decrease a bunch of the mid range to about 9db. The difference between the minor low frequency increase and the larger mid frequency decrease is huge, in my book. I would say "mission accomplished".

    Awesome video as always! About your spectrum analysis. I think you’ve revealed the audible difference in the two peaks you point out, but you might be able to see some more differences at the low end if you tweak the settings. Reliable measures of annoyance with an uncalibrated measurement like this are deviations from a smooth spectrum and overall tilt as opposed to absolute level.
    Try increasing the FFT length to 65536 and switch to a raised cosine window like a Hamming. At the moment you’re using a 2048-point window at 48 kHz, giving a spectral resolution of 23 Hz per bin. The smoothness at the low end is a result of the log scale and smoothing to make it easier on the eye. I’ve no idea what your idle speed is, but let’s say for argument’s sake it’s 1000 rpm, or about 17 Hz. At the combustion chamber we have something resembling an impulse train, which would produce a series of spectral peaks of similar height every multiple of 17 Hz, giving rise to those small ripples in the first peak that this short analysis can’t quite resolve. The manifold and muffler filter the impulse train to give the downward tilt of about 18dB per octave (a 3rd order filter) you recorded here. I’m no expert in exhaust design, but if the intake were lungs, the combustion a glottal closure and the manifold/muffler a vocal tract, you’d have a human voice. Now I’m more comfortable.

    I can give you some more information on the Spectrum analysis. I don't know the super complicated details but hopefully have enough information to help you learn more. First the dB scale is logarithmic, this means that if the sound level increases or drops by 6dB SPL(or whatever unit. Decibels aren't a unit of measurement) then that sound has either doubled in "energy" or is has half as much "energy", depending on what direction you take. Now for human hearing, when there is a 6dB change we hear roughly hear it as twice as loud or half as loud. (varies a little from person to person, situation to situation, etc.) So for your engine take a look at the before and after sound level for ~1900z. The peak on the "before" is at ~ -33dB and on the after it is ~ -42dB. Safe to say that at that Frequency range it is perceptually much quieter. At least half as loud now! Distance away from the sound source is very important too Inverse square law or whatever. if your mic was like 3 feet away and maybe off by 1 or 2 inches between each set up then you are probably fine. But if it was set up 4 inches away and you were off by 2 or 3 inches between set ups then that would have a HUGE impact.
    Taking a step back and looking at the overall data we can see that the "before" data has a little more "fat" or over all energy compared to the "after". This means that there is a whole lot less sound energy coming through the muffler. When it comes to human hearing the more sound energy there is the "louder" it sounds. This doesn't ONLY mean the sound level is increasing for a specific frequency. Say you had a speaker that was basically perfect and a perfect tone generator. If you generated a tone at say 1500 Hz and keep that at 𝑥dB SPL then added another frequency at 2500 𝑥db SPL then it would sound Louder to us all.(I don't know the exact loudness change, it gets complicated the louder the sound and the distance of frequencies) Great example is the THX video. the THX video is increasing in Volume(over all sound energy), not increasing in Sound Level (the 𝑥dB SPL) but is increasing in loudness (human perception of sound). Yes Volume, Level, and Loudness are all different things! Your "after" has a lower volume, level, and loudness at almost every frequency. Is it noticeable? I mean, that changes from person to person. (Also humans hear a much higher sensitivity to certain frequencies. 𝑥dB SPL at 1000 Hz is a hell of a lot louder than 𝑥dB SPL at 20000 Hz)
    The peaks that you see on the spectrum analysis are where sound is "resonating" and also probably producing harmonics. I am not too familiar with this stuff but with those larger more noticeable peaks you would probably be able to count the number of turns or chambers or whatever the gas explodes through. Then there are also harmonics that do strange stuff that im not going to go into because i really don't remember and we are listening to a muffler not a symphony. If you had a spectrogram we would be able to see a little more data that would be able to fine tune your bike with. But it is probably wayyy more complicated than it is worth.
    I hope this helps.

    Muffler packing (absorptive damping) is good at removing high frequency energy which is why the two mid-frequency peaks you circled dropped a bit. The low frequency end doesn't change much unless you really strangle a motor and make lots of backpressure (OEM car exhausts or mufflers with complex tuning chambers). The other thing that works for low frequency drone is a 1/4 wavelength J-pipe, or a Helmholtz resonator (great at removing the drone frequency around 100-150Hz, but pipe tuning is critical).
    You did hit on the placebo effect of "there I fiddled with it, it's better now". Don't you always find your car runs so much nicer after an oil change?

The 800-2000Hz Peaks are smack in the middle of where ears are most sensitive (vocal range). That -12dB damping ~2Khz most importantly is ~56% perceived reduction in the nagging housewife range. Two stroke pipe picture you posted from a motocross bike.... love you called it a stomach!! I grew up in a bike shop my dad owned and I remember thinking the same thing!
    Your exactly right that old tony (of course) about the back pressure and exhaust gasses flow in relation to a two stroke power curve. I’d hear people saying “getting on the powerband” when I was a lad. “Getting on the pipe” is more accurate( and much easier to make jokes about drugs and pipes) but it was very rarely heard.
    In general lamen terms that two stroke zip that’s so fun is that expansion chamber filling with exhaust gases essentially.
    Appears your expansion chamber is more of a sweeping bulge where you installed the packing. This is only speculation but being a trials bike the expansion chamber so much farther back must have to do with that design producing more low end torque.
    Anyway nice tig control
