Very good description and technical explanation of a multiplate wet clutch. From an old mechanic, the only advice I would add for someone brave enough to open one, is to use your eyes and nose when evaluating the condition. Smell the oil, if it smells burnt, strike one... look for blue/heat spots on the plate, (smooth metal parts). Not to get bi-purpose on you, but automatic transmissions use very similar multiplate clutches in their clutch packs. But everyone knows automatics are half black magic, half voodoo and half FM principal, (effing magic). Well, done, as usual, even though it was about a demon machine.
Great Video, .. as always. Just some hints for viewers who'd like to work on their motorbike-clutch too. 1. As Tony mentioned, remember the assembly-order for reassembling, yes it does make a difference. 2. some manufacturers implemented the clutch pack with a "facing-order" as well. meaning, that it's important to have plates facing inward and outward to spec. those are usually marked as well. if in doubt have a look at a service manual, or (if no manual available) at some online-shops, that might just have close-ups of the plates, to look for markings. 3. any wet-clutch does "behave" a bit differently with different oil-temperatures (yes, wet means, it's running in oil... engine oil, though), therefore, if you're having trouble with your clutch slipping at higher temperatures you might consider a different oil (somewhere in the range of manufacturers oil-specs, mind you). some OEM-clutches are famous for slipping with the "wrong" oil. 4. the "cold-play" of the clutch-lever (so the physical clutch-engagenment) might be different from the "hot-play". one should consider this when trying to minimize the play whilst assembly by shmming. A zero cold-play might result in slipping when hot. (might! it all depends on how it's manufactured) 5. all the above-mentioned relates to the whole "chain of engagement" as well. as a rule of thumb. adjust the play to a point where you have like a 5mm of dead-way on your clutch lever (somewhere in the middle of the length of the lever itself / where your middlefinger touches the lever). Then run it, until hot, measure the dead-way again and see if it increases or decreases. this gives you a good idea on how much more to reduce play between parts, if you're chasing the last 1/10ths. 6. yes, there's plenty of debate on whether synthetic or mineral oil is best for proper clutch operation.... no there's no conclusion yet (i wonder why :-P) 7. yes, smooth clutch-operation helps for long-term satisfaction. .-) 8. no i'm not a certified expert on this matter, just wrenching a lot and taking stuff seriously. 9. yes, i'm german, if you find any spelling mistakes or sentences oddly put together, .. feel free to keep 'em. Cheers, S.

If something, as I recently got my driver's license at ripe age of 30, i've been kinda struggling to wrap my head around how clutch works. This made it super simple to understand!
Thank you!. I was not sure how a clutch worked in detail, never taken time to learn. Wasn't sure how the plate/friction thing worked in detail. So, Thank you very much.
This Old Tooty, I've worked on lots of cars and replaced many clutches. But I've never worked on a motorcycle. I learned something today and got a good laugh too.
Excellent placement of fart sounds . Needs more cat screaming when you drop or throw something. Oh.....and more cowbell. Still Emmy award winning content as always.
I hope he did after using dish soap "I hope it wasn't dawn" to clean them. But from the looks of it he didn't, as they looked the same going in as they did when he was done fixing/unfixing? them. Always good to RTFM. But watching this video did remind me that i need to change the oil in my motorcycle.
Musties didn't need a new spacer to take the backlash out of the clutch though. There was an adjustment on the case as well as on the clutch handle if I recall...
Border line spring length could result in clutch slippage as peak power, or a normal feeling clutch that will eventually start slipping. Better just replace them with heavy duty ones while you're at it, instead of buying another set of gaskets.
1:07 I can't believe my eyes. I thought you were a real mechanic. Not being able to instantly recognize the size of that bolt makes me question everything I thought I knew about you.
@@jacobg5122 Doesn't work in the US as reliably in those sizes... My Dad's 1/2 and 9/16 sockets have both had to be warrantied because he straight up wore them out and they're both Snap On. His wrenches aren't far behind. They're sort of "speed fit" now. Frankly, I kinda like it for the work he does with them these days (mostly making hydraulic hoses).
@@TheBrokenLife I work in the US on mostly FMC and International/Navistar vehicles and those are the most common fasteners I run into. On trucks, you use 8mm (5/16") for hose clamps, 10mm for valve cover, water pump , AC compressor, and many other bolts, 13mm (basically 1/2") for alternators and other accessories, 15mm(9/16") for turbo mounting bolts and other large components, and 19mm for anything on the frame. Also 24mm for the drain plug, 33mm for lug nuts, and 36mm for fuel filter housings. The lines on those things are mostly standard sizes though. You can do an Allison 2000 series with a 14mm for the bell housing bolts, 15mm for the torque converter nuts, but for the cooler lines you need 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, and 15/16 wrenches.

Both you and Adam have been a huge inspiration for me and I want to say thank you. I'm still working on my judo cutting, but when I master it, BOY will the new boss be impressed!
Again, thanks for being yourself and helping me get a job!
Eric
I learned a lot from this video! A clutch is something I've always taken for granted, but I love this in-dept video explaining what makes it spin (pun intended). Thanks Tony!
I always love this old tony's videos, was not expecting back to back videos so soon!
"Effortly" is my favorite word of 2020
Like a boss..
That sounds too much like similar sounding brands - whose ads pop up with such annoying regularity on the 'tube (despite all that they surely know about me).
That's so funny. I was just wondering when this motorcycle channel was going to show the maho again ... And there it is! 🤣
But seriously, I am enjoying the motorcycle videos!
i've just bought a '95 ZX6r, i've ran into problems faster than my wallet can repair them: these bike videos have been an incredible help because hardly any of the videos i've watched before have understandable and sound logic tied in with experience, you've really helped this noob!
Keep Up The good work 👍.
I'm a heavy equipment mechanic, i'm 31 years old. I like watching your videos 😉, keep Up The good work 👍 and have a good Day 🤠. Cheers 🍻😺.
Did I miss the "subscribe" moment? Was there one?
We all missed it, but it was there. I just don't know where.
CCBigStew Tony is getting cunning at hiding it so we have to watch it again....just like I have to again 😀
I've watched it twice, and I still don't see it. Obviously an imposter.
@@sarkybugger5009 you see he has acheived what he was aiming for, he's made it into a meme so therefore we'll instinctively talk about subscribing because we can't find the prompt
Watched twice and still nothing :/ This has to be a fake account
Replace those springs! Especially if borderline in the length test, consider em toasted. They're just as important as de-glazed plates/pads.
Every time you pass gas I can't help but think of Marty T
"A bit more choke and that would have started"
:D
If something, as I recently got my driver's license at ripe age of 30, i've been kinda struggling to wrap my head around how clutch works. This made it super simple to understand!
I know nothing of bikes and clutches, but Tony is so entertaining, I learn everytime I see his videos. Thanks Tony! Happy (bike) Trails!
Tot: released a video
Me: high pitch happy noises🥳
Tot: fart noises
Heart me, boss. Maho expects way too much from me and I need a boost.
Thanks Tony! :-)
The best advice I ever received; The older you get the less you can trust a fart.
You don't wanna get more than you bargained for...
Trust a fart, be betrayed by a shit...
And never miss an opportunity to take a Pee.
Whoever told you that advice is a old fart you can trust.
Just put an oil breather or a catch can behind there and let her rip!! 🤣 no worries.
Just one question. You did remember to soak the friction disks in oil before you re-installed them right? Please say yes.
Emulsified oil is a killer
I hope he did after using dish soap "I hope it wasn't dawn" to clean them. But from the looks of it he didn't, as they looked the same going in as they did when he was done fixing/unfixing? them. Always good to RTFM. But watching this video did remind me that i need to change the oil in my motorcycle.
Between Mustie1 and you, I pretty well have multi-plate clutches down.
Musties didn't need a new spacer to take the backlash out of the clutch though. There was an adjustment on the case as well as on the clutch handle if I recall...
Leave the boomer out of this discussion, please
@@user-gdxt-7399 If you like ToT you'll like Mustie1, what are you even on about?
Generic NPC I think you’re about 30 years off. ToT would be gen-x.
@@kristofferbeder Pretty sure Mustie1 isn't a boomer either.
That look into the past with the new piston rings helped refresh my memory.. thanks!!
This morning I had a clutch problem and I don't now what is so I searched on TH-cam something something clutch.
Thank you.
And now I'm curious how it turns out.
Personally I find borderline spring length suspicious.
But I'm used to motor cycles with a bit more than 2.5 hp.
Border line spring length could result in clutch slippage as peak power, or a normal feeling clutch that will eventually start slipping. Better just replace them with heavy duty ones while you're at it, instead of buying another set of gaskets.
Next video: Maho Maho man.. That song is still stuck in my brain
Love all your videos btw
I thought for a minute you were working on a GasGas with all that gas gas.
I’m not a machinist or a motorcyclist, just love hanging out with this old Tony.
You sir are an inspiration and an amazing teacher. Thanks for all your videos. Have a chuckle and learn really cool stuff.
11:05 in the UK and my family has just gone to bed and I'm about to wake them laughing at the fart
1:07 I can't believe my eyes. I thought you were a real mechanic. Not being able to instantly recognize the size of that bolt makes me question everything I thought I knew about you.
You can tell an old mechanic from a new one by the condition of their 8, 10, 13, 15, and 19mm sockets compared to the rest.
@@TheBrokenLife
I work in the US on mostly FMC and International/Navistar vehicles and those are the most common fasteners I run into.
@@jacobg5122 My Dad is 78 years old so metric is a language he isn't too terribly fluent in. That's really what I was getting to.
Also... I will not confirm or deny my personal involvement in International trucks in the past, but if you're working on the engines you have my deepest condolences. Sounds like you're working on MDs, so... Imma see my way out. ;)
t's "fair-sized", isn't that all that matters?
Ok so the fart got me like 😂
I choked on my peanut butter!
It was a little disappointing!!! Couldn't even smell it because I'm wearing a cloth mask that's supposed to save us all!!!
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Thanks Tony. That video gave me a much greater understanding of clutch fundamentals. It was always a slippery subject for me. Cheers!
That's purdy much how ya do it... Been working on scooters fer over 30 years. Funny thing I've noticed... The older ya get, the more prevalent the sound effects become with strenuous labor. Thanks fer sharing!
Hey tony make a video series called “getting lathed” and make it about how to use a lathe
P.S. do a shop tour!
Ok Tony, we get it, you had some bean for lunch.
2:13; *rhythmic chanting* "Ma-Ho Ma-Ho Ma-Ho Ma-Ho!"
Also, whenever someone addresses it when talking to you TOT, they should call it "YoHo." because if I'm talking to you it's not Maho, it's Yoho... I wish I had a Ho...
best clutch how to ive seen learned a lot helps uncomplicate power transmission of many other pieces of machinery one endeavors to work on
Fantastic video, Tony. Sometimes it's nice to just, you know... hang out with you.
Oh...and experience the intersection of machinery and real life. That's good stuff too. 🙂
The moral of the story is “It’s probably fine for now.”
I've been riding bikes for as long as I've been legal, I learnt something here. Particularly what is going on when my bike is serviced and the clutch feels great again. Real bikes though, none of that 50cc nonsense.
Oh yeah love the intro😂
We've all been there
This video shares joint top spot with the best bike clutch explanation I've ever seen: my motorcycle instructor doing a slow, controlled, u turn on a super bike - with the engine firmly pinned on the red line. Granted this explanation was a little quieter. And probably better for the clutch.
If it isn't broken, don't fix it !. But what to do then with your spare time ....... :).
Thanks for everything !. Love to see your dedication on making up your videos, the way you teach things, and how you Hook The viewers attention. I wish I had professors 1% closer than you are to explain things. I would have learned so much more !!!!!!!!!
the fart noise when lifting 😂😂 literally my dad 😂
Reminder:
Beans for breakfast and heavy lifting do not mix.
Order of business when I see a ToT video:
1. Upvote
2. Watch video
Always look foreward to your videos. Your humor never gets old
Man, i could not stop laughing when you tried to pull that metal piece on the floor and threw in the fart sound. What a great way to start the morning. I have learned one golden lesson from TOT. Never drink anything during the videos!!! You never know when he will throw something in there while your drinking that will make you laugh and come out your nose all over the keyboard. Lesson learned.
Intro made me sad cause ik this will awesome i really wana see u do more on ur-ho( cuz its not really maho anymore)
And as i was i typing this i heard the update and almost squeeled like a school girl
10 seconds into the video and i'm already laughing.
6:17 in case anyone had any doubts that Old Tony actually rides, that right there's your answer. If you know, then you know.
