    Excellent tutorial. I bought a coconut with the intention of making a cake like my mother-in-law used to make.... then I was stymied by how to approach the task of removing the meat. Thanks so much. This may work out, after all!

    This is an awesome technique, in particular breaking it open on a hard surface without a cleaver. I also like your lack of cutting board, kinda funny, but it totally works. Very zen!
    Thanks :)

    I think you're blessed by the coconut gods. I just tried this 5 minutes ago with 6 coconuts, and it wasn't so easy. Your technique helped a bit, but still not easy. Most of it came oiu in small chunks.

    This was a good video.Your idea was also great so I tried it with 1 brown coconut I had.I followed your instructions and kept about 90% of the fruit whole. The top would not separate so i used a butter knife to pry open. thanks

    Dude - you didn't do anything dangerous with that knife. You actually know how to use one. People are paranoid. And I love the idea of hitting it on something vs. hitting with a hammer (and having to worry about accuracy). Thanks!

    Wow, I have struggled for 30 years to open coconuts to make coconut cakes. Thank youso much for this tip. I did find a tool that shreds the coconut once opened from a grocery of India foods that is cinch once they are opened. Thanks for sharing. Love it. I need to watch further, but did you show us how to get the bark off easily?

    Tip...
    This is pretty much how I do it, which I learnt from living in the tropics. However, a cool trick is to warm the coconut on a skillet or similar. Just place the coconut for a minute on a hot skillet to warm the husk which will make it more pliable and easier to get the white part out using the same method on the video.

    Gday mate,
    That's an interesting way to peal it, the inner shell is getting pealed instead.
    Well, idea for idea. How to get juice out? I'd suggest to crack it open with the blunt part of the knife and drain it through the crack as you'd do in real life. I'd drill the holes only for straws.
    Enjoy.

    Make sure the drain out all of the water first. Use a wine corkscrew (easier and safer than a knife) to poke thru the soft eye. Then put over a glass for a little while to drain. Then crack open in pieces and put in fridge overnite or few hours. :)

  • @nimajustin5731
    @nimajustin5731 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    this is the way all beginners try to use a coconut , try not to make hole first, just find the one softe eye in three, and middle of its opposite line give a hit it will open easily.

    Use the blunt edge of a cleaver to open the coconut first round like that then then break them into triangular pieces . You can use a towel to wrap and protect your left hand ,place one of the triangle (does not have to be perfect) in the hand with the towel then hold the knife as short as comfortable (be sure to to wrap the knife also but neat so that you can hold it without cutting yourself ) with the right hand leave a little part near to the point about 2 or so inches then remove meat .

    Well let me teach you my way.
    Just hammer the coconut all around for about 2 minutes so the meat inside get's separated from the skin. As soon the skin cracks open you can literally have your coconut in it's initial form without loosing anything
    Thanks

    The inside of the coconut is not the meat. It is actually the milk of the coconut! The way to turn that into milk is to shred it then mush it until it becomes milk!!! Thats how they did it in Hawaii, but using wood and rocks!! Amazing i got to see a man from Hawaii actually climb up a tree get a coconut, peel the husk off (not the brown stuff the coconut has 2 hard layers) then brake open the coconut and turn the milk into liquid!

    There is a trick to open it. I still remember in my childhood one man opens it just with a small tool and knocking on the shell very lightly on some particular point.The shell opens like a twin door leaves in a straight line without any zigzag moves. Still I remember it amazingly.

      I did not say that there is a special tool , but there is a special particular spot on the shell to open it. At that time he was using the blunt side of an hacksaw blade and it is not the tool which matters but the spot on the shell!!

    How do you get the brown off of the coconut meat or do you just eat it? I saw you got the meat out, but most still had shell on it.

  • @DannoTull
    @DannoTull 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    faster way to do this is use a heavy knife and strike the coconut using the dull side of the blade holding it over a bowl and let the water/milk run into the bowl, then use a butter/dinner knife to slice the nut meat cuz you can really push on it and not cut your self, then you can get under it and just pop the rest out. then to trim the brown part off the meat use a sharp potato peeler.

    You made that unbelievably difficult. You've obviously never been to the East. My wife, Thai, can hit a coconut with a chopper, and the head's off in a second. The meat is out in seconds, but I won't tell you how. Takes 10 seconds to open a coconut and remove the contents. Your method is like trying to open a car with a feather. 555... ;)
