Excellent tutorial. I bought a coconut with the intention of making a cake like my mother-in-law used to make.... then I was stymied by how to approach the task of removing the meat. Thanks so much. This may work out, after all!
This is an awesome technique, in particular breaking it open on a hard surface without a cleaver. I also like your lack of cutting board, kinda funny, but it totally works. Very zen! Thanks :)
I think you're blessed by the coconut gods. I just tried this 5 minutes ago with 6 coconuts, and it wasn't so easy. Your technique helped a bit, but still not easy. Most of it came oiu in small chunks.
This was a good video.Your idea was also great so I tried it with 1 brown coconut I had.I followed your instructions and kept about 90% of the fruit whole. The top would not separate so i used a butter knife to pry open. thanks
Dude - you didn't do anything dangerous with that knife. You actually know how to use one. People are paranoid. And I love the idea of hitting it on something vs. hitting with a hammer (and having to worry about accuracy). Thanks!
Wow!!!! This wonderful Coconut opening Demo. film should definitely be sent to Cannes Film Festival !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, I have struggled for 30 years to open coconuts to make coconut cakes. Thank youso much for this tip. I did find a tool that shreds the coconut once opened from a grocery of India foods that is cinch once they are opened. Thanks for sharing. Love it. I need to watch further, but did you show us how to get the bark off easily?
Tip... This is pretty much how I do it, which I learnt from living in the tropics. However, a cool trick is to warm the coconut on a skillet or similar. Just place the coconut for a minute on a hot skillet to warm the husk which will make it more pliable and easier to get the white part out using the same method on the video.
lol man are you crazy? im from the Caribbean and would like to tell you that your was is the most time consuming and silliest way ive evr seen..i can take the coconut out from the shell of a whole coconut in 30 secs.
If I'm shipwrecked on a deserted island this will be useful. But for practical reasons I think I'll buy my shredded coconut in a bag from Dillon's. Thanks for an informative video, though.
Great video.i like how you crack open the coconut with only one hand. pretty impressive. For the coconut cream maybe a smaller swiss knife for better handling.
Gday mate, That's an interesting way to peal it, the inner shell is getting pealed instead. Well, idea for idea. How to get juice out? I'd suggest to crack it open with the blunt part of the knife and drain it through the crack as you'd do in real life. I'd drill the holes only for straws. Enjoy.
Make sure the drain out all of the water first. Use a wine corkscrew (easier and safer than a knife) to poke thru the soft eye. Then put over a glass for a little while to drain. Then crack open in pieces and put in fridge overnite or few hours. :)
this is the way all beginners try to use a coconut , try not to make hole first, just find the one softe eye in three, and middle of its opposite line give a hit it will open easily.
Use the blunt edge of a cleaver to open the coconut first round like that then then break them into triangular pieces . You can use a towel to wrap and protect your left hand ,place one of the triangle (does not have to be perfect) in the hand with the towel then hold the knife as short as comfortable (be sure to to wrap the knife also but neat so that you can hold it without cutting yourself ) with the right hand leave a little part near to the point about 2 or so inches then remove meat .
Okay, I finally figured out where to buy one of those gigantic stone looking downspout thingies to smash my coconut against but then I cut three fingers off doing that great knife technique. Can you do another video showing how to do that with your remaining two fingers? Thanks!
I did this once on accident when I bought my first cocunut from the store. I guess I got lucky but im going to try this if I can reproduce that result each time!!
Well let me teach you my way. Just hammer the coconut all around for about 2 minutes so the meat inside get's separated from the skin. As soon the skin cracks open you can literally have your coconut in it's initial form without loosing anything Thanks
The inside of the coconut is not the meat. It is actually the milk of the coconut! The way to turn that into milk is to shred it then mush it until it becomes milk!!! Thats how they did it in Hawaii, but using wood and rocks!! Amazing i got to see a man from Hawaii actually climb up a tree get a coconut, peel the husk off (not the brown stuff the coconut has 2 hard layers) then brake open the coconut and turn the milk into liquid!
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhh... that is how you do it. GOT IT!
There is a trick to open it. I still remember in my childhood one man opens it just with a small tool and knocking on the shell very lightly on some particular point. The shell opens like a twin door leaves in a straight line without any zigzag moves. Still I remember it amazingly.
I did not say that there is a special tool , but there is a special particular spot on the shell to open it. At that time he was using the blunt side of an hacksaw blade and it is not the tool which matters but the spot on the shell!!
Serious ! Make sure the fridge is really cold inside and not opened too often. Or you may leave it in freezer for half an hour to be doubly sure ! Try it and let me have your feedback.
Hi Ramesh, Thanks for your helpful comment. Do you know if there is a way to get the brown ‘skin’ from the coconut without having to cut it off? I remember watching a video on it a long time ago but can’t find it now. Take care and have subbed
faster way to do this is use a heavy knife and strike the coconut using the dull side of the blade holding it over a bowl and let the water/milk run into the bowl, then use a butter/dinner knife to slice the nut meat cuz you can really push on it and not cut your self, then you can get under it and just pop the rest out. then to trim the brown part off the meat use a sharp potato peeler.
your knife skills - man I was on the edge of my seat. PLEASE be careful in the kitchen. could not continue...

You can tell instantly which is the sprouting hole to pierce - the two 'eyes' that are not holes actually look like they have eyebrows, and the mouth, which you pierce, has no 'brows'. It's a bit spooky... :)
The best way to get the coconut meat - keep the cononut in Freezer about 30 minutes before you break it. you will get the meat ball with out any damage
You made that unbelievably difficult. You've obviously never been to the East. My wife, Thai, can hit a coconut with a chopper, and the head's off in a second. The meat is out in seconds, but I won't tell you how. Takes 10 seconds to open a coconut and remove the contents. Your method is like trying to open a car with a feather. 555... ;)

Fantastic. I never knew I could hit them around the side until they opened. Thank you. There is nothing like fresh coconut meat.
This was a good video.Your idea was also great so I tried it with 1 brown coconut I had.I followed your instructions and kept about 90% of the fruit whole. The top would not separate so i used a butter knife to pry open. thanks

I'm sooo impressed! You must love your coconuts to have worked this out!

It really kind of worked for me after a little fussing around. Thank you
Tip...

will try warming next time

it was very smart to try opening the coconut on a rusted piece of metal...
very well played!
best instructional video on coconut meat extraction, thanks
this is the most helpful video I've seen on this topic!
My method looks so lame now. Thanks for sharing a better way.
If I'm shipwrecked on a deserted island this will be useful. But for practical reasons I think I'll buy my shredded coconut in a bag from Dillon's. Thanks for an informative video, though.
Thank you so much! I've never de-fleshed a coconut so quickly...!!! ;o)
Excellent demonstration!
i tried it, worked for me! thank you! (I had the guy in the store crack it open for me and removed the meat myself)
Nice to hear an English accent
I just smash mine on the patio stone slab ...takes a second and it works a treat.
Awesome! Thanks. Definitely going to try this tomorrow. Good job, man.
Great video.i like how you crack open the coconut with only one hand. pretty impressive. For the coconut cream maybe a smaller swiss knife for better handling.
+John Doe true this knife was not ideal just the first one I picked up... smaller would be safer and better handling .. like Swiss army :)
I think this video is great. Just gotta be careful with the knife. But your technique worked for me.
+Aminna Jack there is loads of ways , but I still try and cut a little bit out first seems to make the rest come out easier
Hey, that came out easy -- thanks. I'm confused about how you cracked it open though. I'll have to watch again.
Wow, this works for people who aren't brawny men.... brawny women for that matter. :)
Best method I have seen thank you.
The access of the shell would be a cool pencil holder :)
Fast and clean. Good job.
Gday mate,
That's an interesting way to peal it, the inner shell is getting pealed instead.

always wondered for the simple way, it worked for me. thanks
Make sure the drain out all of the water first. Use a wine corkscrew (easier and safer than a knife) to poke thru the soft eye. Then put over a glass for a little while to drain. Then crack open in pieces and put in fridge overnite or few hours. :)

Are you like a secret ninja? Your knife skills are awesome!

thanks for the tip :) wrapping the knife is a good idea
ur welcome.
I like the idea with the slot in the middle.
The way you handle that knife had me on the edge of my seat the entire time you were cutting. Be careful. lol
1984Snot i know , what the hell was i thinking , oh my god this video is crazy
Nice. That's an actual excellent use of "your mother". Thumbs up 4 u!
Thank you! Really needed this!
well done , ! this was my first attempt at this method
That was honest and helpful.
Okay, I finally figured out where to buy one of those gigantic stone looking downspout thingies to smash my coconut against but then I cut three fingers off doing that great knife technique. Can you do another video showing how to do that with your remaining two fingers? Thanks!
if you bake the coconut for a while on high it comes out a lot easier. You can scoop it out with a spoon. :)
Any thoughts on why cutting out that slice first makes it easier to remove the rest of the meat? Thanks for the video.
Hey at least you know how to open one, i had to bang mine with a knife until it opened! I must admit i was scared lol thanks for the tip.
This is too funny. Cave man style for sure. awesome =)
👍🏻👍🏻thank you for explanation !! 👍🏻
I did this once on accident when I bought my first cocunut from the store. I guess I got lucky but im going to try this if I can reproduce that result each time!!
Wow.... My husband broke the coconut into 2 pieces with its shell and I was like that It wouldn't be peeled now. But I'm going to try this tip 😊
Hey, you did a great job, I'll have to buy and try it too. ☺
Would make for a cool cocktail bowl..lol
Well let me teach you my way.
Just hammer the coconut all around for about 2 minutes so the meat inside get's separated from the skin. As soon the skin cracks open you can literally have your coconut in it's initial form without loosing anything
Thanks
Excellent. cutting down the inside did the trick for me.
wow, that came out so easily thanks for the tip
That's great. We all have a railroad track to use as an anvil at home anyway.
The inside of the coconut is not the meat. It is actually the milk of the coconut! The way to turn that into milk is to shred it then mush it until it becomes milk!!! after u break the coconut..dip it in ice cold water for 5-10 mins and then use the same trip..dat would be more positive n time saving..;)
What a pro! You make it look so easy :S
thank you,,,,,, I love coconut.... :)
Quality video pal took me like 10 mins to do cheers!!
good video, i just failed miserably with a coconut tool. I'll try this.

Worked for me, many thanks.
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhh... that is how you do it. GOT IT!
+Fernanda Rivera I love your comment 😀
Monkey2Rumble my
This is about how I do mine. I prefer young coconuts because they are easier to open
That was an awesome coconut.
you just made this process a lot less intimidating for me. thank you.
put the halves of coconut in normal water totally dipped fr one hour. they will come iuteasily without any extra effort
it's very usefully for everyone great I like this very much.
just did it. Thank you so much! It worked just as shown, and now i can make monty python horse noises
sharp knife fella...
nicely done. thanks for posting.
Ahhh the coconut, nature's jawbreaker.
There is a trick to open it. I still remember in my childhood one man opens it just with a small tool and knocking on the shell very lightly on some particular point. The shell opens like a twin door leaves in a straight line without any zigzag moves. Still I remember it amazingly.
+Reliance KB do you know the name of this tool ?
I did not say that there is a special tool , but there is a special particular spot on the shell to open it. At that time he was using the blunt side of an hacksaw blade and it is not the tool which matters but the spot on the shell!!
ok thanks again !!
Serious ! Make sure the fridge is really cold inside and not opened too often. Or you may leave it in freezer for half an hour to be doubly sure ! Try it and let me have your feedback.
no its actually coconut blood in the uk , but thanks its really important we get this right
Hi Ramesh,
Thanks for your helpful comment.
Do you know if there is a way to get the brown ‘skin’ from the coconut without having to cut it off? I remember watching a video on it a long time ago but can’t find it now.
Take care and have subbed
this is really neet, can pot a plant in the hull afterwards.
How do you get the brown off of the coconut meat or do you just eat it? I saw you got the meat out, but most still had shell on it.
faster way to do this is use a heavy knife and strike the coconut using the dull side of the blade holding it over a bowl and let the water/milk run into the bowl, then use a butter/dinner knife to slice the nut meat cuz you can really push on it and not cut your self, then you can get under it and just pop the rest out. then to trim the brown part off the meat use a sharp potato peeler.
Ur my newest hero lol ty!!!
thanks , that made a have a great smile
Lucky guy still got your fingers :-)
Or maybe you could just buy coconut already sliced from your local grocery store, they have many varieties, dried, whole, mixed with rum etc.
your knife skills - man I was on the edge of my seat. PLEASE be careful in the kitchen. could not continue...
You can tell instantly which is the sprouting hole to pierce - the two 'eyes' that are not holes actually look like they have eyebrows, and the mouth, which you pierce, has no 'brows'. It's a bit spooky... :)
Good one, Loved it ! Thanks for sharing such a wonderful video. :-)
Great work!
The best way to get the coconut meat - keep the cononut in Freezer about 30 minutes before you break it.
you will get the meat ball with out any damage
Too easy. Thanks.
Well done!
that looks so good ugh im so hungry
A power drill works better than a spoon
weakening the middle of the shell worked fine, wondering where to find such a sharp metal edge
chidooo...------ tutorial thanks
hahahahahaha this is funny hehe takes nice way but it takes forever you should come to samoa so we can show you how to do it lol
thank You great suggestion

This is how you do it??? Come to kerala... I will show you how to do it in a minute...!
exactly in India we have so many more efficient ways of doing it.
If we spend so much time cracking a coconut, our meals would never get prepared.
i liked the way too much........ thank u
Really suuuuper👌👌👌👌
For how long do you bake the coconut?30 minutes. an hr? Thanx
