    Excellent alternatives to Merged Cells and the endless annoyance they cause! The Narrator also speaks very clearly and punches his pronunciation of 'Celllllz' It sure captures my attention!

      It's discussed often. Another issue is that there's no solution like this for Vertical Merge.

    • @TeachExcel
      @TeachExcel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two things are that its a big problem with formulas - you have to point to the upper/left cell in the merged range, which can be an issue when you are copy/pasting and using relative cell references and it also messes up sorting/filtering with drop down arrows on individual columns.

    Hallo thank for this tricks. But I have a question, is it possible to use center across selection in combination with rows and columns? I don't want to use merging. Is there any other way for it. Thank you in advance ☺️

    Hi, I didn't knew that.... But what are potential problems, when you ARE using it? Like me :P

      Merged cells create blanks although excel makes it look like the value is across all of them (this is a bigger issue if you are merging rows not columns). So your table gets filled with blank values that affect your data/filters.
      Merge cells also stop you being able to select a range (e.g. merging A1 and B1 stops you being able to select only A1:A10, instead selecting A1:B10 for you).
      But in simplest terms, if you're working with a table (columns and rows) merge cells loses the integrity of columns and rows.
      If all you're doing is creating a visual or a summary, then merge away to your heart's content.

      Copying formulas down a column with a surprise merged cell also causes problems if the formula doesn't point to the upper-left of the merged cell.

    Great video. Thank you very much for sharing. Is there any alternative for merging cells if the text is in two (or more) cells vertically? E.G. "Parts" in A1:A2 (rather then in A1:B1 as shown in the video). I hope it makes sense. Thank you.

      What about just making one row big and one row smaller? This technique is used a lot once gridlines are removed.

      First copy the merged vertical cells and paste it somewhere.
      Apply, CTRL+G across the selection of the vertical merged cells.Go to Special and select blanks
      Now drag the criteria down across the respective columns. Go to the copy of the merged vertical cells in the first step.
      Apply copy brush and apply the paste brush on your selection of vertical merged cells. Now you will be able to filter the cells without any issues

      Google sheets is becoming more popular but MS Office still rules the nest by a wide margin. If its a new company, they might not use Office as much as an older established one.

    Thanks for the video. However -
    I have a wrapped text that is merged on a few columns. The number of lines in the merged cells changes according to a formula.
    I wish to auto-adjust the row height according to the number of lines, but I understand it is impossible to do on merged cells.
    Is there a way to do it?

  • @BenDC85
    @BenDC85 ปีที่แล้ว

    This doesn't seem to work with numbers? Only works with text. Numbers don't extend into the next cell and just become "#####"

      Try putting a single apostrophe in front of it - it can cause issues with calculations but should make it work for titles.
