I like the 1x12 and mini head setup, there's lots of great mini heads these days you could use and have a range of tones and lot of gear in a small space.

I enjoyed the sound of the Orange rig a little more. Probably due to the V30 loaded birch ply cab. My ears are so used and that sound and it just works.
Well they sound best together to be fair , that orange rig is perfect for rhythm and the Evh was perfect for lead , Ben’s rig sounded thick and juicy in the mids what carry’s the heft of the sound and John’s is spikey and sort of thin sounding with a very high register fizzyness that cuts trough the mix like a battle axe .
I reckon we win for getting to listen to that. The rigs complement each other really well to me. I don't prefer one over the other, they do slightly different things and work well together.

Looking for a begginers rig i would probably go Hotone Ampero II, its decent enough to keep you entertained and its conveniet. Everything else is going straight into guitar. I fould either get an FRFR monitor later or experiment with real amps, but if i am on a budget and i am fresh to guitar world (basically these two together are almost always the case) a reasonably priced modeller plus a decent guitar is the go for me.
I'm more into Doom / Stoner metal. So I'd get an Epiphone SG Standard. In Alpine White. And a Marshall DSL20 combo amp. For pedals, a Electro-Harmonix Nano Metal Muff, because it has EQ and a gate too. And a TC Magus Pro, because it does the heavy Fat Rat sound, and the gnarly Turbo Rat sound. Fuzz & Rat together would get me toward that Sunn O))) Life Pedal sound. Can play the octaves by hand :)
I was expecting this to be close, but John totaly owns this for me. That raspy agressive in your face sound but with great string separation, just wins.Bens sounds too squished to my ears.
It's the best choice, when you decide to focus your budget primarily on the amp. at least for what kids today think is "Metal". I'd rather pick a squire classic vibe and a Marshall dual super lead 20
Both rigs sounded awesome so it's really hard to choose, but if I did had to pick then I would probably say John's tone with that phaser just bumped it over the top for me. Absolutely brilliant
For the purposes of the video. The guy on the right's rig sounded better. But I have owned that Orange setup before - without the EQ pedal - and I was not happy with it. I question wether there is any chance you could hear it over a drum kit either. And the 5150 sounds way better in person. But whatever. I havn't watched one of these in years, back when Rabea was doing them. This was entertaining and fun
Yeah anything with orange instantly wins for me, i think an old Marshall JMP might overtake orange but in this case orange wins hard. I think its that raw organic sound orange has, its exactly like those old Marshalls cranked hard
Metal is supposed to sound big and loud and powerful and you cannot get that from a little 3 inch orange amp that makes it sound like it's in a bird house.
Funny - I can almost replicate Ben's winning rig with things lying on my "spares shelf" including a King V JS32 (EMG upgraded) and a criminally under-used Micro Dark. I foresee a mini rig-build coming up ....
Easily a Boss Katana. Once you connect a computer/phone into it, you'll have access to unholy amounts of distortion and variety of tones/amps/pedals etc. I bought one a few months ago and without doubt its the best budget amp I've ever owned. I got mine for £180 2nd hand
I don't know what price range you call budget. But you can usually find a 2nd hand Peavey 6505+ 112 Combo for under 400. If you decide to go Katana, which is a great choice, do mind that the 50W doesn't have an effects loop. The 100W does (there is 1x12 and 2x12 version of the 100W).
John wins rhythm and riffs, Bens wins lead/ melodic runs. Both will compliment eachother in a mix almost perfectly. Last thing you want is rhythm with a lot of delay or reverb. Bens will not chug nicely, and the lack of delay on Johns is a no go for a lead/solo
That 5150 has a built-in Boost that brings up the tone for leads (adds Gain and Level). I think he should have tried it. It doesn't truly do what Delay does, but it brings up the leads nicely.
