For those of you who may be wondering why Mafia 2 is so inconsistent (This goes to Fuzzy too, btw), that's because one of the directors and one of the main writer behind the first game, Daniel Vavra quitted from the company when 2K started to cause creative differences, that's why there so much cut content (including fuctioning taxis and trains like in GTA 4) and why the whole game feels like a disjointed mess at times, 2K Czech couldn't get a hold of the other director from the first game Petr Vochozka so they had to settle with someone else who had a completely different vision from Vavra, also, the single mission in Sicily was going to be the size of a full campaign (you have no idea of how much content was cut from the final game to never be seen again) and the original story in Mafia 2 was suppoused to have the part of the game set in the 50's be set specifically in 1957 as opposed to 1951, that's why the 50's era is the most anachronistic of the two.
Mafia 2 is the game that could have been. It's a damn shame. Take 2 won't levy the resources for a proper remake. I'm inclined to believe they refuse to do this and give the Mafia series a proper shot in the arm because as long as Rockstar and GTA are under their thumb, they most likely wouldn't want any true competition for the open world crime giant that has just proven it can go 10 plus years a title now. And eventually They may want to have Rockstar do a Mafia centric period piece compatible to RDR so having the Mafia series remain lack luster most likely benefits them more in the long run. The bungled and underwealming release of the definitive edition trilogy and the rumblings of Mafia 4 being a prequel set in 1910s Italy opposed to the highly requested and anticipated Las Vegas and 70s/80s eras, speaks to this idea.
Daniel Vavra, one of the lead writers for Mafia 2, has explained in an interview 3 years ago that Henry was NEVER supposed to be a rat. Instead, it was Falcone's plan to frame Henry, Vito and Joe in order to get them killed without any direct involvement in their deaths, to avoid suspicion. He also mentioned that there would be multiple endings, where Vito could potentially die, end in prison, or Joe would die instead, and so on. He left the studio due to creative differences at the time, which would explain why some aspects of the story seem out of place.
@@ReichLife That's not how it works... You're following the "It makes sense for this character to do this because you're seeing him do it" logic. It's a frequently used poor defense of poor writing. I'm not saying the game is poorly written, but as Fuzzy points out, there are places where the story fails to explain why some things happen the way they do. While probably not my favorite game experience of all time, Mafia II has my favorite story of any game I’ve ever played and this game will always have a very special spot in my heart
What I really like about this game is that is was set mostly in the 1950s and there aren't a lot of good games set in the 1950s. I went to the balcony and got the voice line to use the sheets, but Leo says to get them from "the laundry" and I thought that referred to a laundry room somewhere else in the house. I got caught immediately after looking for the room and thought I failed the mission, lol.
A little detail I’ve always enjoyed towards the end of chapter 9, when going to see Eddie at the Falcon appears as an objective, if you don’t switch out of your dirty clothes you’ll get a special cutscene where you’re forced to get different clothes, this is skipped if you arrive at the objective with a new outfit that didn’t go through the sewage earlier
And to add insult to injury, every store owner in the game has lines for when he enters their store and they comment on his smell, including the body shop guy. They really recorded several more lines for this one specific moment.

You can actually sneak Leo Gallante out of the house without Henry knowing using bedsheets. Additionally, there is a secret cutscene between Vito and his sister’s husband if he goes to their apartment before Vito beats him up.
In mafia 2 development they were supposed add a feature to buy cars and houses also betting at a horse track but due to 2k pressuring them for a release date and little time they couldn’t add those features .
Robbing the gun store is the #1 way to earn at least 2k at the beginning of each chapter. It's so satisfying to walk in, show the business end of your shotgun, and take the money. Speeding off in the most badass way possible. I You could even hit them in the middle of escorting someone to look even more badass
My experience with mafia 2 was a pretty strange one. Idk why or how, maybe my disc was scratched or something, but like 5ish hours into the story i experienced a glitch where every time i would drive to one specific building it would flag the current mission as completed and mark my next objective to drive home. And the entire rest of the game was pretty much me driving to that street corner and back home to watch a cutscene rinse and repeat until roll credits.
Nono that's normal. The rest of the story from there on out Vito got payed to be a building-sitter. They mention it in a cutscene or something, I'm sure of it.
I used to be so obsessed with this game before it came out, having been a huge fan of the original and the 1950s. I was very active on the forums (I was like 12 without much better to do) and kept a list of all of the cars and what they were based on, updating it with every trailer and gameplay footage. I was naturally disappointed with the end product, nothing could measure up to that level of hype, but it is by no means a bad game. It just hurts see how much was cut, what could have been.
Too bad Joe is still alive, even if he is forced to stay separate from Vito. The Mafia franchise as of Mafia 3 has officially turned into Playhouse Disney from crime doesn't pay.
Worth noting that when you get to Leo’s house, if you pick the right route, you can lead Leo out of the house without Henry seeing you. You’ll take Leo to the train station and the game continues on as usual.
Came to the comments to explain the Daniel situation, but other's have beat me to it. Perhaps you could look into it when doing Mafia 3. Much love. This video and channel deserves more engagement. ❤
There is a mod called Friends for Life, that actually remade Mafia II in a open world, the hard part is that you need to figure out what combat arenas you need to do to progress the story, because the mod doesn't tell you, I still have no idea how to access the hotel, even that other did.
This is my new favorite channel man. I like your style of critique, it has this "whatever" feeling to it and your content is fun to binge 😂😂😂keep it up
Mafia 2 was one of my favorite games in the series, the game would've been perfect had the devs had enough time to add more side missions as a breakaway from the story but im happy with the way it turned out, the whole Henry being a cop thing kinda reminded me of Troy from Saints row 1, where it reveals that he's a cop at the end but during his missions early on it shows you hints that lead up to that moment.
The main writer of Mafia and partly Mafia 2 once said on a stream that Henry never should've been a rat and the ending should've been completely different
Just played through Mafia 2 Definitive Edition, a good game still holds up today, got many quirks and its great how much details for example the vehicles have. The story is good, the world is fine, but after it ends I didnt find much else to really do. The ending and the "DLC" show how much got cut out from the game.
I recently found you through your San Andreas video. Then I watched a couple others. I started this video, but 40 minutes in decided to stop and go play Mafia II. I'd never played it before. And man, I am SO happy I played it. Mafia II is an absolute masterpiece!
6:47 If you think that's jarring then wait until Mafia 3 "Stones Unturned" DLC actually has us saving ENTIRE WORLD from nuclear war(Or at least from one guy selling nukes to wrong people)... now that's jarring to see in a Mafia game XD
His voice has uncanny similarity to The Salt Factory. Very similar tone and style of narration. Seriously, listen to this and tell me it doesnt sound like the same person: watch?v=uTP-8Vc3cME
Joe's Adventures could have been so good if it followed the main game's mission structure, I actually finished it myself, the rest of the story revolves around Joe making connections with the Falcone family, and it makes the transition between the prison chapter feel less Jarring, but it's absolutely bogged down by the stupid mission structure.
Yeah. Joe's Adventures is just basically cut content from the final product of the main game after the Witness mission. It's so sad. I enjoyed it, but it was unnecessary filler at the same time.
I played this in the end of ‘13 , hard times . Music in pause screen was so emotional I thought something bad would happen like Joe turns or something , wasn’t expecting the ending . I cried inside . I love this game and atmosphere. Good story .
man i super enjoyed my first playthrough of mafia 2. i hadnt played one and knew nothing about the game other than it was mafia related when i started. one of the best stories ive ever played through.
I think something that was unintentionally really sad was the last words Vito says to Joe. It's very likely Joe's last thoughts were that Vito sold him out to save his own ass.
Playing Mafia 2 for numerous hours has programmed me to have the urge to drive really fast whenever I hear any song from the 1950s. *cruising down a backroad going 55* *Book Of Love starts playing* *punches it and drives +100*
Just played this game for the first time this month so the timing couldn’t be more perfect. I don’t always agree with your takes on these games but loved the video regardless. Really a fantastic game.
something ive just noticed, the voice actor for Vito also voiced the main character for the ps2 game, Made Man and in that game there are flashback levels to the character's time during war. A small coincidence but interesting to me haha
Definetly my favorite Mafia game. I played first and it was alright, and went to this one and it was awesome. The city, even if not that lively, was full of details, exploration was rewarded with posters and magazines, few car customization options is nice addition; its truly a jack-of-all-trades game with alot of missed potential. And with all the beta explorers and production ideas that have been and are still being uncovered, it could have been a masterpiece of decade. I still replay it every few years. Thanks for covering this game!
53:32 fun fact Frankie Potts is the protagonist for the promotional site The Story of Frankie Potts which details his investigation into the criminal underworld
1:10:57 In regards to Henry being a rat, I felt the story was actually alluding to this. His first talk with Vito in the car after the hotel mission sounded like an interrogation. I genuinely thought he was wearing a wire. He didn't kill Leo, which you could argue was a favor for Vito, but informants are not allowed to commit crimes so you can argue Henry was actually just following orders. Like the Triad enforcer said, why would they tip the cops off to their deal and risk exposing themselves? The only logical explanation is that Henry tipped the police, who tipped others.
Mafia 2 is one of my favorite games ever I've played it through probably about 10 times I NEVER KNEW YOU COULD DISABLE THAT GOD DAMN ALARM IN THE OPA I legitimately always thought that you were supposed to get caught and shoot your way out
this game would have beeen even more great had the developers had time to finish their ambitious ideas. the game is still solid as it is which is huge kudos to the devs as they had to crunch and cut out alot of ideas and mechanics to meet the deadline. The passion in games is not the same today as it was in the ps2 era and ps3 era. sure its the companies that f the developers up but back then developers always came up with smart solutions to their limitations. this game mafia 2 forever be in my top 10 games of all time

The ending part is indeed kind of rushed because IIRC the lead writer left and they basically changed his entire vision for last few missions, like Henry was never supposed to be a rat
Man this was my game back in the day, I really feel like this game had some of the best pacing for its genre. By the end of the game, you genuinely DO feel like a mob boss, and the cast and voice acting only further cement that.
i just made a video on mafia 2 a couple days ago! it was my first video and i can easily say it was no where as detailed as yours! great video as always!
A cool thing you might've missed at 14:07. if you go in the Burger place, you will find a girl that Vito used to date, he asks to get coffee with her and she states that she's married with kids.
I’ve been sick for close to a week now, and I gotta tell you, your videos have been making lying in bed a lot more tolerable. Thanks for always making awesome content!
If I could only play one game for the rest of my life, it would be Mafia II. The atmosphere, the game world, the characters, the dialog... it all just feels so warm and cozy, and keeps me coming back after more than a decade. The story is great, and the gameplay is really solid. The driving in particular is my favorite in any game- a great balance between fun and authenticity, especially on simulation mode with the 50s cars. I also love how there's so many color variations for Vito's suits, giving some serious mafioso dress up vibes.
My brother loves this game. Meanwhile I’m baffled no one on the dev team realized how unnecessarily long it was taking to teach one of the most basic combat systems I’ve ever seen. Nah, we gotta save that counter move for the prison scene, it’s TOO ADVANCED!
The part after the china town mission where u have to drive Joe home and evade the police was way too hard. Police would pull up right before I drop him off
I think what made Tommy Angelo's and Vito Scaletta's stories so memorable and engaging is that they perfectly fit the characterization of the tragic antihero. And its something I didn't really get from Mafia III.
Something cool I like to do to save money in Mafia 2 also (kinda works as a negative too but I enjoy it), is if you go into a clothes store and aim a weapon at the cashier, you can rob the store. And that includes the clothes there also. You can just quickly equip all the different clothing options in the store after holding up the cashier and leave before the cops show up and provided you don't die, you keep all of those clothes for the rest of the game xDD
The first game was brutal sometimes in health and ammo. I even remember getting stuck on the modded racecar mission and pulling out the map/poster that came with the game to find the best route.
alot of the open world stuff happens in the dlc where you play as joe and another new character jimmy there are mission markers like in most other open world crime games
The Evade dont work for you cause you think you need to press at specific time when the gane literaly said "HOLD" to evade. You can keep the botton HOLD all time and you will Dodge everything.
So I saw this title last night and went to bed...Waking up, getting to my desk, I see the same title BUT now I also see "FuzzySlippers". I gasped, yelled "HOLD!", grabbed my snacks, and I'm ready for my world to be rocked If it ain't Fuzzy, it won't do, buddy 😤
The checkpoint system is such bs. I remember during the mission to tail Mr. Wong, he literally crashed into a cop and got himself arrested, making ME fail the mission and redo that WHOLE section
my guess is that Joe "wasn't part of the deal" because he did not vouch for Henry, therefore he's the one getting to the cathouse, whereas Vito gets exiled to New Bordeaux as the guy who collects the commission fee from the Marcano.
our cze dub is genius, an absolute treat for those that understand the language but the eng version is also great it's a great summary from you I've been watching for a bit and your content is great I enjoy these retrospectives and this one is no different❤
Great video as usual really loced it Also : 1:10:43 on the topic of henry being an agent i have a theory that the events of enter the dragon ( and most of the later chapters ) are planned by the vincis to have a reason to get rid of falcone in fear of losing their grip due to the death of Clemente and most likely just seize control over the entire city for themselves Which expalins why there seem to be very few clues pointing to Henry's betrayal and why Vincis were able to figure it was Joe and Vito were behind the massacre in Chinatown

"Sorry Kid. Joe wasn't part of our deal.." still breaks my heart
how much more betrayal can he take?
I finished the game today it was so sad bro
Crazy ending only mafia game I’ve played left me so confused and lost Fr ig that’s how the mob works tho.
Too bad Joe is still alive, even if he is forced to stay separate from Vito. The Mafia franchise as of Mafia 3 has officially turned into Playhouse Disney from crime doesn't pay.
@@manofwisdom000 he is? That's something you learn in mafia 3? I couldn't bring myself to finish 3.. I stopped half way through
Worth noting that when you get to Leo’s house, if you pick the right route, you can lead Leo out of the house without Henry seeing you.
That fleece Johnson bit was legendary.
Just finished mafia the other day, great timing fuzzy! Appreciate you
Just played through Mafia 2 Definitive Edition, a good game still holds up today, got many quirks and its great how much details for example the vehicles have. The story is good, the world is fine, but after it ends I didnt find much else to really do. The ending and the "DLC" show how much got cut out from the game.
One of the most underrated story in gaming and a great video as well Keep up the good work
I recently found you through your San Andreas video. Then I watched a couple others. I started this video, but 40 minutes in decided to stop and go play Mafia II. I'd never played it before. And man, I am SO happy I played it. Mafia II is an absolute masterpiece!
6:47 If you think that's jarring then wait until Mafia 3 "Stones Unturned" DLC actually has us saving ENTIRE WORLD from nuclear war(Or at least from one guy selling nukes to wrong people)... now that's jarring to see in a Mafia game XD
its insane how much you and pure kino (sopranos recap) sound EXACTLY the same
His voice has uncanny similarity to The Salt Factory.
"Back me up, Vito."
"am going in!"
„ Hehe, Bingo“
"Whadyya scared asshole"
"Ya shoot like my sister."
this game is truly underrated its a masterpiece.
You can escape with Leo without meeting Henry. He would chase after the car letting off shots.
Great review, classic game, I played this so much when it came out in high school
Mafia 2 is easily in my top 3 games of all time
Sure, I got time for a quick Mafia retrospective before bed.
Great timing. I just beat mafia 2 a couple of weeks ago. Must have been like my tenth play through
I think something that was unintentionally really sad was the last words Vito says to Joe. It's very likely Joe's last thoughts were that Vito sold him out to save his own ass.
The Fleece Johnson part got me 😂😂😂😂
Playing Mafia 2 for numerous hours has programmed me to have the urge to drive really fast whenever I hear any song from the 1950s. *cruising down a backroad going 55* *Book Of Love starts playing* *punches it and drives +100*
Just played this game for the first time this month so the timing couldn’t be more perfect. I don’t always agree with your takes on these games but loved the video regardless. Really a fantastic game.
Seriously man... The "race to the mansion" gave me so much trouble the first time I played through, I rave quit for several months!
something ive just noticed, the voice actor for Vito also voiced the main character for the ps2 game, Made Man and in that game there are flashback levels to the character's time during war.
I really admire how passionate you are about these games, Fuzzy.
I’ve been genuinely so excited for this game, easily my favourite Mafia.
while watching this video i felt so nostalgic one of the great experiences mafia 2,i really want to play it again
53:32 fun fact Frankie Potts is the protagonist for the promotional site The Story of Frankie Potts which details his investigation into the criminal underworld
This making me want to pull my 360 out rn and play some gta iv, saints row 2 and mafia 2
Best thing you can do! Worth it for sure!

Yea I feel bad for his death hearing him scream made me feel bad but at the same time wasnt he a rat? Very conflicting character in this game
That. What a walk trought memory lane.
Mafia 2 is one of my favorite games ever I've played it through probably about 10 times I NEVER KNEW YOU COULD DISABLE THAT GOD DAMN ALARM IN THE OPA I legitimately always thought that you were supposed to get caught and shoot your way out
I've heard the music at the beginning of this video, can't remember where it's from and I must know 😂😂 great video btw
Great video, as always. Keep it up! I hope you get to 100k subs soon, you deserve it.
this game would have beeen even more great had the developers had time to finish their ambitious ideas. the game is still solid as it is which is huge kudos to the devs as they had to crunch and cut out alot of ideas and mechanics to meet the deadline. The passion in games is not the same today as it was in the ps2 era and ps3 era. sure its the companies that f the developers up but back then developers always came up with smart solutions to their limitations. this game mafia 2 forever be in my top 10 games of all time
That ending to the game is one of my favourite endings
Fr left me so betrayed mafia 2 the only mafia game I played and it left me lost and confused ig that’s what the mob life is like tho
@@bbraxtonn Betrayed? More like it should have left you feeling the pain of losing all your friends and family including the last person you had left in your life all because of the lifestyle both you and your best friend chose together. All for wanting to live the fast live. Now look what it brought you.
49:10 Okay that was the last thing I was expecting. Fuzzy, you're a man of culture. Lmfao.
Played this for the first time in December and enjoyed it a lot.
The ending part is indeed kind of rushed because IIRC the lead writer left and they basically changed his entire vision for last few missions, like Henry was never supposed to be a rat
Holy cow I just finished this game for the first time 4 days ago! Perfect timing Mr slippers!
Cheers my guy 😎
24:30 you actually can repair cars in the storage and i didnt know that for the longest time
Man this was my game back in the day, I really feel like this game had some of the best pacing for its genre. By the end of the game, you genuinely DO feel like a mob boss, and the cast and voice acting only further cement that.
Derek’s “what the fuck?” To Vito saying he won’t lift crates is to this day the funniest thing ever to me
i just made a video on mafia 2 a couple days ago! it was my first video and i can easily say it was no where as detailed as yours! great video as always!
44:47 Someone call an ambulance, but not for me!
1:31:04 I'd guess they added the informant plot point late in the day to make it different to a similar plot at the end of Mafia 1.
Ah Mafia 2...the best one plain and simple.
Definitely one of the better games of the 2010s and very underrated
I gasped, yelled "HOLD!", grabbed my snacks, and I'm ready for my world to be rocked
If it ain't Fuzzy, it won't do, buddy 😤
You my friend have earned a subscriber I love watching your videos. Your videos were recommended to me
To be fair, during the reveal of Derek killing Vito's dad can be caught by the look they share when they hear 'Scaletta' during the introduction
Recently went back and got all the achievements in the 360 version. It’s pretty dang good imo, but THOSE GODDAMN POSTERS!
The checkpoint system is such bs. I remember during the mission to tail Mr. Wong, he literally crashed into a cop and got himself arrested, making ME fail the mission and redo that WHOLE section
Seeing this on a Sunday is like slipping out of my foot bath and into some warm, fuzzy slippers. ❤
Nothing compares to the mafia race mission, that mission is torture worthy
I’m just wrapping up playing this myself. Gonna watch the rest of this as soon as I finish it.
Will you make a retrospective for mafia III too?
29:15 I just noticed that Dirk looks at Steve after Vito mentions his father.
my guess is that Joe "wasn't part of the deal" because he did not vouch for Henry, therefore he's the one getting to the cathouse, whereas Vito gets exiled to New Bordeaux as the guy who collects the commission fee from the Marcano.
our cze dub is genius, an absolute treat for those that understand the language
but the eng version is also great
it's a great summary from you
I've been watching for a bit and your content is great
I enjoy these retrospectives and this one is no different❤
Great video as usual really loced it
Also : 1:10:43 on the topic of henry being an agent i have a theory that the events of enter the dragon ( and most of the later chapters ) are planned by the vincis to have a reason to get rid of falcone in fear of losing their grip due to the death of Clemente and most likely just seize control over the entire city for themselves
Which expalins why there seem to be very few clues pointing to Henry's betrayal and why Vincis were able to figure it was Joe and Vito were behind the massacre in Chinatown
i played this game back when i was 14 so much, i think i completed it at least 10 times
