- Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wine is an Italian red wine made in Tuscany from Sangiovese grape variety. And while may hear more often about other Sangiovese based wines such as Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano definitely delivers when it comes to value.

A lot of people do also always forgot the Carmignano, another wine with super quality price.
This is a very needed video as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is highly underrated and overlooked with the likes of Chianti and Brunello. I appreciate you bringing up that even the most prominent Italian books on the grapes doesn't mention this region because there is shockingly little information about this DOCG. Including its mentions in the Wine Atlas and Sotheby's books are rather short winded. I hope the development of the Pieve helps the region dedicate more to an Identity instead of being looked at as the younger unappreciated brother of Brunello. Its says a lot that we struggle to define it as you said! They certainly have a slight identity crisis and tightening the restriction of the minimum for Sangiovese will help them become more distinct as well as the continued replanting and clonal selection. I have high hopes for the region as I have always loved the wines and see increased quality and better winemaking in the future. I hopefully Gen Z see bottles on the shelf as much as Montepulciano's counterparts in 10-20 years.
I see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano seems to very much be following in the path Chianti Classico "Gran Selezione" walked with the Pieve, then increasing the Minimum Sangiovese content in the wines. These regions have yet to reach their full potentials things are only getting better as all these developments are recent and I'm excited!

New here and really like your channel! Very beautiful, stylish and informative to watch!
Perfect timing. I just opened a Montepulciano white for my lunch today. I've been to Montepulciano on several occasions and you only have to see the landscape to know that it's capable of producing good wine. It's the kind of region where a lot of wine is drunk locally so the price/quality has to reflect that reality. However, there's a lot of really good stuff too. I think there are some incredibly talented producers in the area and the Tuscan/Umbrian region has been the location of some really interesting ideas with wine. I think it's made for natural/low intervention stuff. High end craft beer has taken off there too.
I have to add that the rather looked down upon Montepulciano d' Abruzzo located in Abruzzo is producing some really good under the radar stuff these days too. It was always a byword for cheap, knockdown, Montepulciano but some excellent value stuff from some talented producers can be found there today.

Thank you for covering this video. I loved visiting Contucci and it made me fall in love with the region. I love botti style wines that focus more on the fruit and acidity. I call Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wines, the wines for Napa drinkers. Thanks for the explanation of why it hasn’t gained much popularity.

Another great video, Agnes. Yes, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano suffers from the classic "middle child syndrome"; as it's stuck between Brunello di Montalcino and CC. If you add in the common confusion with Montepulciano di Abruzzo, for non wine geeks or aficionados it's tricky to differentiate.
I have tried it and it is definitely good quality, the question though for me is; what is it's USP? How does it stand out from the higher priced Brunello and the QPR CCR? Hopefully with time it will become a more well recognized appellation, but fingers crossed that prices won't skyrocket as they have in Barolo and now in Mount Etna. 🤣. Fun video and thanks for highlighting a rather unknown corner of the wine world. Prieka!

Compared to other varietals, I've tried relatively few Sangiovese wines...so this video was very informative. I tend to prefer the Bolgheri blends. As a bonus, I added a new city to visit in Siena whenever we make it back to Italy 🇮🇹

Awesome video as always! I am probably an exception, but I do not get food and wine pairings. When I have wine, I want wine and the taste of the wine itself is the only important thing. I absolutely do not care if it goes well together with marshmallows or fermented pig brains. I do enjoy having bread, olive oil, some cheese and dried ham alongside my wine, but I take them as two separate things.
I hear where you're coming from and agree to a point. The food/wine pairing thing is a bit of a cliché which is a highly personal thing besides. I do consider what wine I want with my food but I'm not too fussy. For me it's red or white and whether the food justifies the price of any particular bottle. A good wine can compliment or even elevate good food.
It is absolutely okay! And actually I think so too, wine and food pairing is often too much exaggerated! While there are some rules one can follow, it really depends on each person specifically. And I always say - eat what You like and drink what You like and You will be most happy! 🙌🙌🙌
I think inconsistency over vintages is what's inherent to an interesting terroir that's able to produce great complexity and tension in its wine that most new world wines are usually unable to deliver with their consistent ripeness. I don't have any science to back up this "claim" but from general experience tasting a lot of wines this is what stands out to me.
I must apologise, but in this case I must disagree 😔 In my view one of the defining elements of great terroir is the consistency and ability to shine through even the most difficult vintages. But as You said, I also don’t have science to back it up. 🙈🤷♀️

What is not clear to me is the pronunciation. It's written as Montepulciano, but you pronounce it as Montepulicano, at least I hear it that way.

Its high end Sangiovese, its not very far from other areas. But Tuscany has so many wines and viniards. Blends are a goto here, famous Super Tuscans. But its the History, geography, and culture from just study of wine and spirits. Villa Antinori is a great 20$ or so bottle, whats ur price?? Some are 2 to 300$

I agree Tuscany has so much to offer, but I do think Sangiovese can be beautiful without it being blended with other grapes. 🍇 It has that quality! 🍷 Cheers!

Vino Nobile’s problem is the same as Franciacorta. It’s hard to convince consumers to take a chance on the unknown. For me, Nobile lacks the charm and brightness of Chianti and the power and intensity of Brunello. They tend to be a bit too rustic for me sometimes. Every wine has it’s place though and it can certainly be good in the right situations.
🤔🤔🤔 I think it also has some stylistic issues (not the top names though) that You also pointed out. But I also believe that they are heading towards the right direction and currently are offering great value, especially for those who enjoy Sangiovese grape! 🍷

You’re kind of right. I think Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is good. It has more fruitless than Chianti Classico and Brunello.
