- In this video we’ll learn what Super Tuscan wine is (it’s made with non-Italian grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown in Italy) and how these wines changed Tuscany forever.
You’ll learn Supertuscan wine history, plus how to identify these wines in the marketplace.
The idea of Supertuscan wine isn’t new, but it sparked a revolution in the 1970s that changed the face of Italian wine forever. We got our hands on 4 of the most famous Super Tuscan wines out there!

We’re thankful to Banfi, for helping support Wine Folly content! Thank you!
Notes on Italian wine pronunciation:
Vino da Tavola: Tav-o-la
Summus: Soo-mus

I’ve become such a wine geek, just trying to soak up all the info possible with much of it on TH-cam. There are some great presenters out there, but you may be the best. Thanks for your intelligence and knowledge. Much appreciated.
Thank you Scott!

Wow
Was there a few years ago ..mind blowing
Avignonesi Winery Fattoria Le Capezzine
absolutely the BEST youtube class on Super Tuscans. Clear explanations, good detail, and great summary of 4 different types... Italian wine DOC's etc. can be complicated a bit, but she gets it right from start to finish; with just enough information!! great work, as usual Madeline! THANK YOU!
I remember as a Somm in Beverly Hills having a table with two of my favorite guest. The debate was between the Tignanello and the Sasi- I can tell you both are wonderful. The Tignanello for me is an experience worth trying. The debate went on and still goes on till this day lol 😅
Awesome, Madeline! We just got back from Italy in September and spent some time in San Gimignano and fell in love with the Tuscan region. I had some confusion about Super Tuscans, but no more. Thanks for the video! Your awesome!
Wow! What an experience to be there!!
Just recently bought Sassicaia, Flaccianello, Il Blu from the 2020 vintage and Tignanello, Cepparello from 2019 so that video was perfectly timed for me. Can't wait to enjoy them in 15-20 years!
That was an amazing video! Thank you so very much. I really appreciate what you did there. I'm a Super Toscan lover and that's about the best explanation yet of their character. Agani, thank you for this vieo.
You're very welcome!
wow great video on super Tuscan's wines, which is my favorite wine to drink..
I did enjoy your Super Tuscan video. Headed out to my favorite wine store to get 2 to compare & contrast! Thanks Madeline!
Have fun!
“Infanticide”😂Never knew the story behind Super Tuscans- great vid, as always! 🍷
Thanks!
Always a great night at work selling these amazing wines to guests! Loved the showcase video!
yaas! Somm!
Great video, keep them coming
Loved the video
Very nice!
Lovely wines indeed ! ... Part of me wished Tuscany would let their native grapes shine vs trying to serve a more global audience / palate... On the other hand, the results are simply stunning ! Viva Italia !!!
Well said! 🇮🇹
What a great video on Super Toscans. I like the Rosso and Brunello from Banfi, so I will certainly try out their Super Toscans. I visited the beautiful region and Castello Banfi in 2002. Still have some bottles of that period. Greetz from Belgium.
Thanks! I’ve been a fan for years and I’m glad to finally see a way to thank you for these videos. I always enjoy your presentations and I’ve learned a ton from you since I bought your book a few years ago. Please keep them coming!
Wow thank you so much! Much appreciated- going to share your note with the whole team! 🥰
Great video Madeline! Love your teaching style! always making wine fun!
Thank you! Cheers!
High quality video, Wine Folly. Nicely done. These can be “Oh my”😮 wines. My initiation was Tignanello a long time ago. 🍷as always.
oh my is The Tig a duzy... gosh!
Wonderful video. I'll keep an eye out for these. This was good education.
Thank you 🙏
Super tuscans has dramatically impacted the wine world for a long time now. Even novices are really turning their choices. Super Venetians wines should also be in the limelight. They're gorgeous as well. I hope you make a vid out of it. Thanks.
And Super Lazios!
Definitely. They're really deserve the title "super." Thanks Madeline! 😊
Hello Madeline thanks for this awesome video. I visited Castello Banfi last year and i had axciting wine casting of local sangiovese based wines. At the end the guy brought me Summus bottle and i was delighted with that tasting. still stuck ti my ❤. bye.
What an amazing story!
Thanks Madeline! Fantastic information as always. But please don't drive and video. I want to keep you safe to make more videos.
I'm a huge fan of Modus by Ruffino. It's incredible for the price. But yes, Super Tuscans are where it's at. Rustic and crazy drinkable.
Hello, so when do you suggest is the best time to open a Tig or Sassicaia? 10 years after the production year. Or it may depend on the estate
If i hadn’t got my current job, I would have pursued my somm certifications. I will keep it as a hobby. Chianti Classico is my favorite wine hands down but I love super Tuscans.
never too late!
Very well presented and well produced, Madeline.
Given Sassacaia’s exceptional quality and reputation, why do you think it has not been elevated to DOCG status?
Thanks.
As with all things Italy - It's going to take time.
Personally though, and you're welcome to disagree, a single estate DOCG doesn't fit the Italian classification system. The original estate is just 4 acres, so what, is that the Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC? or, can they use all their 290 acres? Yes I like the wine, and what this estate has done for Tuscany is profound, but if we're going to do this for them, then we should probably consider all the other estates - or maybe make a new grand cru status in Italy... it feels a bit messy and without a grand vision in mind.
Nice video! I’m curious, I don’t often see you decant wine in the clips, how come? This would really help these bolder wines, don’t you think?
They sit in the glass for like an hour or more while I shoot b-roll
Please call the next time you do this - In would have welcomed the opportunity to taste all of these !!! 😋 🍷 🇮🇹
At 3:45 you show the Bolgheri DOC denomination on a bottle of Sassicaia, just notice that Sassicaia is the only monopole in the entire Italian appellation system since it has its own DOC "Bolgheri Sassicaia" !
it's true, it's the ONLY one! pretty crazy right? Start something... and 80 years later, you'll get cred!
The Sassicaia was only Cab Franc and Cab Sav. Does this still count as a Super Tuscan even though it doesn't have Sangiovese?
Curiosity : The first Supertuscan was Vigorello by San Felice...
dude! would love to see what you have on that: got some links and sources of us to verify what you're saying here?
Oh, Tignanello is good stuff! So is Sassicaia. But Tignenello is the better bargain.
glad you love it!
I’m not sure how named them “super” but they were dead wrong imo. Would rather drink a Brunello any day
Have you had Banfi’s Brunellos? Wowsa! Any recommendations you want to throw our way?
I'm pretty sure they were named Super, because they were way out of what Tuscany was doing at the time with their native varieties. So "More" than just usual tuscans... Super-tuscans!
Wow this video is bum!!!
I think u just pour to much wine in the glass can’t really even see the real color of each wine 😀
TAvola, not taVOla
ah yes indeedy.
Your pronunciation of Italian words is terrible.
Ha. It is. Sorry. At least I learned how to say Caio -more or less- properly. Cin cin!
Chianti are mainstream!! But nicely produced
Amazing Super Tuscan wines... super hard find it out here in spain... specially Bcause of pricing!!!! Give me some tips @ madrid PLEASSEEE
