Being born in Toscana I’ve tested several times Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. I do strongly agree with your message about pricing: despite delivering high quality wines and being well known they haven’t yet skyrocketed the prices as much as their neighbouring friends (I.e. Gran Selezione from Chianti, Brunello’s, Bolgheri’s and Supertuscans in general). Among all, my favourite remains the Asinone as best (and pretty reliable across different vintages) compromise between quality and price. I’d love to see more visits and interviews to the winemakers in this channel in the future (if possible), which is nevertheless outstanding as learning partner!
thank you for sharing our italian wine jewelry! I suggest you to try also a little family run winery called "La Combarbia" and their Nobile. One of my favorite Nobile is the "Asinone" label from Poliziano, vintages like 16, 15 and older are simply amazing.
Sangiovese is by far my favorite grape variety-it deserves to be 100% of the bottle! I’m glad these winemakers agree-will definitely be seeking out their wine.
Good to see old friends there. Glad you got out that way. Some of the wines you mentioned are among my favorite Vino Nobiles. The Pogetto di Sopra is so clear and precise (esp the 2016), the Asinone is bigger and not trying to be Brunello but has it's own signature, and all of Boscarelli's portfolio is just killer. Last time I visited, Nicolo and Luca opened a 91' Il Nocio... Nicolo and I just sat and staired in silence, we didn't need to say anything. Also, big shout out to Pici!! hahaha
I often spend weekends and holidays in a little house next to San Biaggio at the foot of Montepulciano (you can actually see the house in one of the shots in the video). And a glass of Nobile and picci al ragu di cinghiale by the fire on a cold damp evening is an experience you won't soon forget.
Wow, this was one of the best videos yet.! Seeing the winemakers taking about their work, craft and passion was amazing. I have tasted Vino Nobile de Montepulciano in the past, but out in Asia it wasn't readily available and somewhat over priced. Now that I am Europe I will see it out. It's interesting how a diversity of terroir produces very distinct flavor profiles and structure from the same cultivar.
Great vid, thanks. What lovely people the winemakers you interviewed are! I’ve never focused on Vino Nobile. Please would you consider a followup video putting it into context by exploring it alongside other Sangiovese wines such as Chianti, Brunello etc.
Thanks Konstantin. Really enjoyed this video. I love seeing the growers/producers talking about their own vineyards and wines. It really brings it to life. Thanks and hope you enjoyed all that good home cooked Italian food! 😊
Great video Konstantin! I visited Tuscany in late August 2023 with my wine buddy and we went to Bolgheri, Maremma, Chianti, Montepulciano, Montalcino and San Gimignano. Whilst the whole experience was sensational, the day we spent in Montepulciano was the most memorable. We were very lucky to visit Poliziano and were looked after by Fabio and Loredana and the wines blew us away. I am now a big advocate and agree with you in relation to quality, prices and reputation. I'm certainly ensuring I have Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in my cellar.
Great video. I love hearing from these producers that are so passionate about their craft and product. I’m drinking mostly Italian wines at the moment and will definitely seek out one of these.
Finally, people are founding about my favorite wine region in Tuscany….. oh wait, I want the prices to stay affordable 😅. I got the chance to visit it last year and I loved it. Would love to go back and visit more wineries.
Great video Konstantin, and good transparency on the sponsorship. Most of the wines covered are available in Australia, about USD 40 to 50. I have quite a few Carpineto Riserva 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2018 and they are regulars in Wine Spectator's Top 100 - The 2018 was rated 94 points 👍
That's great content. I had the Rosso from Poliziano and La Braccesca is available. I'm all in on Tuscany these days. It's very interesting that Sangiovese can be so different from place to place.
Yes I think I wrote before in one of your videos that I visited Salchetto, whose Nobile is one of my favourie and one of the best price/value wines ever made. Aslo I visited Cantina Dei and met the lady owner which is not so obvious, because she usually travels the world. Anyway their Bossone reserva is something very unique but still old fashioned.
Absolutely love vino nobile... Spent many holidays driving through the region & montepulciano is special ❤️.. For a splurge the Boscarelli il nocio always delivered
Great video! I love to see the winemakers sharing their knowledge and experience. I've only had Vino Rosso from Montepulciano and wasn't terribly impressed, but I'm inspired to take the next step now, even though the Vino Nobile is a bit expensive here in Texas.
I love sangiovese and I love vino nobile; sangiovese grown in Australia tends to be most similar to vino nobile due to our heat and clay soils, but it doesn't beat the real deal.
I've had both the 2017 and 2018 Salceto Salco when visiting Italy. Both were available at a local grocery store for less than half the price I'd pay here in Canada. Both were excellent and for my palate I slightly preferred the 2017.
Wonderful piece. Love this grape!! I have a Poliziano Le Caggiole 2016 that I would like to lay down for a few years, but will be difficult to pass by! I know it will be worth it.
Thank you for covering this Konatantin! I’ve been living in Italy for the past 11 years and Sangiovese is my favorite grape! I love especially the brunellos with some of my favorites being the Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Brunello di Montalcino and the Ragnaie of 2016! I grew to love wine since I moved to Italy and honestly I really appreciate wine as people in Tuscany region (and not only) live and breath wine!
Loved this video! I hope to see more videos showcasing producers/wine production in 2024. Not that I don’t learn from watching you taste but… I really enjoyed this one! 🍷
I enjoyed this episode! I love sangiovese and for sure southern Tuscany. I concur with your observation that the Vino Nobile is still great value for money compared to other famous DOCG's. There is a lot of choice between 15 and 35 euro's. One of my go to Vino Nobile is the estate of DEI.
Thank you so much for doing this video. As I'm myself very interested in Italian wines, especially from Tuscany this was delightful to watch. I have also visited a few estates in Tuscany. I would be very excited if you could also do this kind of video on the Chianti Classico region. Or a tasting video comparing the different varieties (Brunello, Vino Nobile MP, Chianti Classico)! That would awesome.
This is awesome! So much depth, there are lots of youtube videos covering chianti classico or montalcino regions, but very little on this underrated region. I hope we will see more - and personally, would love to see more of your communication with other experts too. Happy new year!
“Of course, I had to touch the stuff (manure) myself” - but where’s the video evidence, huh? Just seeing your face as you recounted that was priceless, I’d have loved to see that moment 🤣 Seriously though, this was an amazing video. You’ve outdone yourself this time. I understand you want to keep the videos short to avoid people “changing the channel”, but is there any possibility that you could upload longer versions of the interviews later? I’m sure those conversations must’ve been fascinating.
Thanks for another good and informative video. I would recommend tasting wines from Villa Sant’ Anna. Especially their top-wine Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Poldo
My wife and I were in Italy for our honeymoon last May and we spent a few days in Tuscany - and touring wineries, of course! We really enjoyed Gracciano Della Seta. Their winemaker Julio gave us a great tour and never made us feel rushed (in the way a the winery inside the town did!) Their wines were nice and we really liked their riserva! Opened one recently and it was a bit tight and austere, but I think that showed its aging potential. Next time we will decant.
Visited Poliziano, along side with contucci in 2008. With my younger palette, i found Poliziano to be bitter, tar, rustic, coffee. Contucci was more approachable for my young palette at that time. In 2018, I came across an entry level Poliziano, I found it to be more approachable but thin. With their direction of making continuous adaptations to showcase their terror, I look forward to their wines.
GREAT VIDEO EXPERIENCE !!! THANKS !!! also ....notice u developed a new extensive "Italian" HAND GESTURING addition to your normally good performance. (hilarious !!)
Great Video! Love Sangiovese from Italy, I've had 16 Vino Nobile wines including the ones featured in your video which have been my favorites. The best I've had was the 2017 Avignonesi Poggetto di Sopra. 93 points for me. My average rating for Vino Nobile is 89 while it is 93 for Brunello, probably my most favorite wine of all but a big price difference. After seeing the video I ordered some 2015 Avignonesi and 2017 Polizano.
Sangiovese Di Toscana can indeed be had for a reasonable price here in the UK, if you look for it. So important to make the distinction between pure Sangiovese and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Even S. Nobile isn't THAT expensive for what it is. The statue would've scared the bejayzus out of me too. Interestingly, 'scared' is an anagram of 'sacred'.. 😅Happy New Year to you and all your friends and family, and all you erudite if occasionally tipsy subscribers to the channel! Nice one Konstantin. 🍷⭐👍
We carry the Avignonesi Vino Nobile, and their 2012 Toscana at the wine shop I manage, and they are such incredible wines. The 2012 Toscana is particularly interesting. I only tasted it with reps when we first brought it in, but this video has inspired me to treat myself to a full bottle! Haha!
I have had some reasonably modest Vino Nobiles , and they have never disappointed. I always fancied that of all the Italian varietals, Nebbiolo would be my favourite, but in practice - I think it really is Sangiovese, and Vino Nobile and Brunello really drive this.
I have only tried the 2016 Villa d’Angelo Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. I was not a fan of this on. It I found this one to be overly simplistic & easily forgettable. Will definitely try again from different estates based off your video. Thanks for sharing!
Danke 😀
What a great episode. Wonderful to listen to the interviews with the winemakers. Also nice that you are not focusing on Brunello and Chianti Classico, which always seem to get so much more attention than vino nobile.
I've had both a Avignonesi and Salcheto and I preferred the Solcheto. It was one of the most elegant wines I've ever drank! So tense but with silky tannins and vibrant acidity. I wish it was more widely available. When comparing the two VNM wines to chianti classico I found those two examples to have more purity and suppleness then what I've experienced with most Chianti
Dear Mr Baum, Greetings from Zürich! I’m a big fan of your videos and of your boldness in judging. I genuinely enjoy learning about (mainly) red wine, but I’m far from being an expert. I purchased two years ago at a wine festival a limited-production 2015 Sangiovese from Etna (the only Sangiovese down there) and I wanted to know whether you’ve heard of it. I found it excellent compared to the rest of the wines I tasted and I paid 70 € for it. It’s called Unico di Benedetta, from Tenuta Benedetta. It has a captivating label, featuring the eyes of the producers’ daughter, Benedetta. Best regards and wishes for a happy new year! Nikiforos Kapetanakis
@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine thanks for replying! I would highly recommend it! As a Greek I would love if you could one day make a video about great Greek reds! Cheers!!
Very good video. Thanks for sharing. I am a little bit unsure about Vino Nobile and Tuscan wine because as Matteo said too much wine there tastes a lot the cask he was aged in. There is a big lack of definition in too many wines on the market so I cannot go and pick candidly a 35€ bottle. Sangiovese is a tricky grape for me and that's why I'll always go for a Barolo instead.
Rosso di Montalcino and Vino Nobile are two of my absolute favorite weekday pickups. I actually prefer the more entry-level offerings before they get too huge / rich.
Lovely video again Konstantin. I inmediatly want to buy some bottles to see for myself! And I must admit to be one of those(idiots:)) to think that it was a montipunciano wine.
I have been to la braccesca and really enjoyed the silkyness of the tannins on Maggiarino. All of their wines, including the rosso, were great. Curious if you tried the Syrah from Cortona and what you thought (Bramasole). I stayed at a winery, Fattoria Del Cero, who had some wonderful wines. All of the places we visited had food and wine tastinga that were amazing. Purchasing for shipment to the USA was very reasonable as well.
Had the 2020 Avignonesi Rosso di Montepulciano with some traditional Spaghetti Carbonara, very nice wine with very good Sangiovese character. In my opinion well worth the 14 Euro it costs.
Just finished a Carpineto Riserva 2018 which on top of prugnolo gentile includes canaiolo. According to your experience can it still be considered stricto sensus a vino nobile di montepulciano ?
Amazing video Konstantin and Happy New Year! I had a few Vino Nobiles over the Christmas holiday and am constantly amazed at how underrated the wine is, especially in the grand context of Tuscany as a whole. Also, solid Italian! Quick but random question I’ve always wondered: in addition to your native German and English, how many other languages do you speak? I’d imagine you have interact with individuals in the wine industry all over the world who speak a variety of languages, so I’ve always been curious about that. Cheers!
I have found it difficult to enjoy wines from this region. Sangiovese that I’ve had, and I’ve been trying a lot, feels “rustic” to me - old world - and rough around the edges. There’s a lot of opportunity for progress and innovation here and I hope the new generation of winemakers embrace the opportunity and elevate their wines over time.
I have been itching to know - Konstantin, what do you do with the bottles of wine that you try after you open them? Do you give them away? Toss them out? Recork them and keep them to drink with dinner?
Did you see Jay-Z spent his birthday at Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux last December?! The hip-hop head in me can only dream of Jay-Z buying Smith Haut Lafitte, re-naming it "Smith Hov Lafitte". A boy can dream.
Yesyes have visited a few wineries there and organised a tasting once. But please don't mention too often as the prices will rise more than the 20% or so it already has in the past 3 years.
I don't like my wine with geese I think that sick... The poor geese. I like my wine with dog meat! Especially aged hound or poodle. It just pairs so well.
All of the vintners you featured were extremely intelligent and attractive folks. However, this did seem like an infomercial for their wine. My experience with this wine is a bit mixed, so I hope they do up their game and produce something a little less rustic. Wonderful presentation, however.
Curious to know why this stuff all costs more than 50€ while their Chianti can be had for 10........they made a nice business out of a grape from the South of Italy.
@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine I agree grape is as much a part of terroir as man is, or weather or stone. My mind set has drifted to wanting to grow a mix of varieties in my vineyard, like they did in olden times. Neither way is wrong, but counting on one clone can be risky.

Sangiovese is a tricky grape for me and that's why I'll always go for a Barolo instead.
I tried once Poliziano - it was great red wine🥂🥂
Great stuff!
I like the style of Maria Caterina Dei, even though I'm not a great fan of Sangiovese.
Researching Itakian wine prices for a lon time, I found that Vino Nobile is the best quality/price relation in Italy...
I hope you will do a video of Serbian or at least ex Yugo wines one day. Great video!
Cheers!
Same to you!
I was supposed to go Vino Nobile and Brunello tasting on my trip to Italy but due to Visa stuff I ended up in Porto and the Duoro Valley...next time!
Hey Konstantin, do you think Avignonesi Grandi Annate 2011 still drinks well today or could it be over the hill?
I think it might still be good… only one way to find out
I have found it difficult to enjoy wines from this region.
All of the above!
Did you see Jay-Z spent his birthday at Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux last December?! The hip-hop head in me can only dream of Jay-Z buying Smith Haut Lafitte, re-naming it "Smith Hov Lafitte". A boy can dream.
😂
@Konstantinbaum: Which wine do you prefer personally? Chianti Classico, Brunello or Vino Nobile?
Tricky ... it depends on the time and the place!
@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine diplomatische Antwort!
Yesyes have visited a few wineries there and organised a tasting once. But please don't mention too often as the prices will rise more than the 20% or so it already has in the past 3 years.
My favourite is Il Macchione.

Seems that I am drifting in the wrong direction I am a terroirista not a cepageista, single variety wine is just falling into the new world trap.
When it comes to Terroir, single varieties is often quite powerful expressing its home: think Burgundy, Mosel, Barolo …
@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine I agree grape is as much a part of terroir as man is, or weather or stone. My mind set has drifted to wanting to grow a mix of varieties in my vineyard, like they did in olden times. Neither way is wrong, but counting on one clone can be risky.
I’ve had many more exciting Vino Nobile over the years than Brunellos
