Your video hit the mark. Following your video, we prepared our application for my child. I followed your document checklist as well. We visited the BLS in Ottawa, and everything proceeded without a hitch. I ran into a couple families who were here for the second or third time. One more reminder for those visiting Ottawa for walk-in business: arrive there before 7 am. When they first open at 8 am, they start issuing tokens, but they soon cease. Prepare your demand draft as well. If you don't have DD, they won't even continue with your application since they will continue if you provide the few copies that are lacking. I appreciate your thorough explanation.

Hi, no thumb impressions of minor anywhere except applicants signature section as shown in the video. Rest just follow the video as it is. You will not go wrong

A few points to note for minor application:
1. Upload scanned copies of original documents
2. Need NOT upload PR card and COPR of the parents. Need to submit self-attested copy of parents' PR cards when sending in the documents
3. For minors, left-hand thumb impression for all genders
4. When entering the place of birth, if the passport has CAN in it, ignore that part and enter only the city name

- Sign at Page 1, inside the box below your photo, and at Page 2.
- Minor Applicants :
o If a minor cannot sign, using only blue or black ink, apply left thumb impression for boys and right for girls.
o Both parents must sign at end Part B even if not applying together.

NOC has a photo requirement. Do we need to paste a photo of both the parents? If so, does it have to be within 6 month validity?

My spouse is Indian but was not born in India (grandparents were born in India), so what do I write for relation to root indian?

Great video. Thanks! Inthe process of applying for surrender of Indian passport and OCI card. BLS Calgary advised to appky together to reduce overall time as they can be processed in parallel. Question is for documents uploaded as part of OCI aonline applcation - do those need to the be self attested first? or only the copies that are handed in physically at BLS require to be self attested? I understand the BLS agent checks the originals when you go into submit
Roop the documents which are being uploaded need not be attested. The physical copy which will be getting sent needs to be self attested. I did it that way.

Place of Birth in child’s passport is ‘Mississauga CAN’. If I enter the same in online application then the printed registration form takes it as ‘Mississauga CAN, Canada’. I called BLS and they were not much sure. Someone said put it as Mississauga CAN and then said just put Mississauga.
As you mentioned your daughter’s place of birth is Mississauga, could you please suggest what you had mentioned in online form.

I mentioned Mississauga CAN, which they said not allowed. Just mention city name alone without CAN, since Canada will be added automatically by the system in the final document generation.

My son has a old OCI card and new passport, Should we need to apply for OCI re-issue, As the latest checklist(Jan-2022) from BLS site says that re-issue is not required until the kid reaches 20 yrs of age. Is this rule effective now?

Hi do you know how long it is taking to process OCI applications in Toronto? I sent my application via Purolator on the 27th of Sept, it started getting processed by BLS on the 5th of Oct and showed up as under process on the Indian Consulate OCI tracking website on the 25th of Oct.
When they say processing takes 6-8 weeks, do they mean from the time it is recived by BLS or by Indian Consulate?
Expect 4-6 week’s turnaround
In the No objection form, parents photo can be copy pasted using word?

Firstly, thank you for these amazing videos, they are really helpful. Secondly, had a query. For the Relationship Certificate, A birth certificate and the long form both are required? will the long form alone not suffice?
Ronie logically I should have only submitted long form as it is certified true copy and proof of authentication for official document and signed by attorney general and I am sure even Indian High commission would accept. As you would have noted there were too many variations by call centre and before it reaches high commission someone at entry level would be checking these documents who has set SOP I did not want to take chance. a.) The checklist points out I need to submit a 'Certificate of Renuncations' or an India passport with a canceled stamp. Looks like the Canadian authorities when issuing the Canadian passport did not stamp my Indian passport for cancellation. So do I need to provide a certificate of Renunciation now?
b. The checklist also asks to provide a work letter. I am currently looking for a job and just freelancing. Do I still need to provide an employment letter?

Pranjal I don't have answer to first question as I did for my newborn daughter who is Canadian by birth.
Regarding point 2, that should not be problem. As long as you have your Canadian passport and ties to India it will take care.
Please call BLS once. India Passport even if not cancelled when you submit India should be able to update the record.

And also by logic Birth certificate is a valid document and in todays age of digitalization the government has made things easy for applicants. If you watch my video carefully I have mentioned that BLS is very confusing and I had to get into multiple call.

As far as I remember thumb impressions of child was at one place and the check list was signed by me. I have shown exactly what I did. Just follow as in video and you won’t go wrong

1. Puralator will give you AWB number with which you can track. I did this way.
2. I paid for drop off service when sending documents. Put that copy along with other documents.
3. No original documents were sent

Very informative video. Just a quick question.. is there any specific order of documents to be sent. Or can just send the documents. Should we staple them. Also in the no objection certificate should be paste both the parents photographs or just send them.
Swathi, just make sure all documents are available. I had made a checklist and had organised accordingly. Also it has been some time since I sent documents so I don't remember. Incase it has not been asked to paste photo don't do it and sent separately. Hope this helps

1) I am on a Temporary work permit/Visa and I did not see the "Both parents Landing Paper" option. Hence I uploaded our Visa and work permits under "Employment/Work Letter". Will it work ?
2) I just made the printouts. Can you tell how to do "Self Attest" ? Just sign/Sign,name,date/Anything else?
3) I am in Brampton. I was trying to book BLS appointment for OCI. But its showing all slots booked until May 2022. Can you suggest what are the other options?
For Temp work permit, please speak to BLS once. I don't want to misguide. With regard to thumb impression, one was just below the baby photo on application form (This was taken on a blank piece of paper and uploaded), and on the declaration form it was signature of application section. Hope this helps.
Self attest is nothing but putting your signature and writing your full name below.
For Brampton when I was trying getting appointment was difficult hence I sent it by post. All details given in the video.

Hi that should be a problem as long the foreign parent is not from restriction country. Here child will choose roots to India. Father is father is citizen otherwise mother. Indian parent will upload all India related document and foriegn parent foriegn passport. When it comes to marriage certificate make sure to call service agency(BLS) incase of Canada and check what exactly is required. Let me know how it goes.

Had 2 doubts actually :-
1) There is no need to attest the Minor's Passport-Copy or Birth_Certificate-Copy right ??
2) There's a "Signature of applicant" on the checklist page as well. We need to put the baby's thumb print there right ?
No worries…you can self attest as parents. No harm. No need to get this attested as we do in India by notary. If that was your question.
Thumb impression of child will come in declaration section only(signature of applicant). Rest you can do as parent. Just follow the video you will be good

What to mention in relation with root Indian if born in Canada and parents were from India and they hold Indian passports
This is so informative! Can we use a CIBC bank statement as proof of address? Also just to confirm, is the signature page of the Canadian passport needed when uploading documents?

Hi timeline should be same(4-6 weeks) from the time of application. Also if you are not able to edit you can fill new application, just make sure you send the correct application(has different ARN).

We don’t have PR card , as parents we are Canadian citizens what should we upload in place of landing documents (Copr or Pr card).
My son is also Canadian citizen .
It’s okay. When I made the video I had PR card and COPR. If you have Canadian citizenship you would have surrender India passport so that will hold good as it will show roots to India. Just make a call to BLS before sending documents to be at peace

Sorry for late reply. I made my own checklist document as covering and sent to BLS
They will have your record as you will enter your address and passport details
I also had the same question. The following is the only reference I could find for CANO
"While filling up the on-line Visa Application Form (at indianvisaonline.gov.
in/visa/), fill "Canada - Ottawa" under the Indian Mission heading (it is the first column on the first page). This will ensure that when you will print the Visa Application From, the number generated under the bar code will start with CANO.....which shows that the Form was correctly filled up for Ottawa office. The letters CAN indicate Canada and letter O stands for Ottawa. Please remember that Ottawa office can process only those Visa Application Forms which have CANO... under the bar code."

If someone has acquired Canadian passport and has surrendered the Indian passport already and received a Surrender Certificate, then can that person travel to other countries (other than India) without having an Indian visa or OCI?
What I mean is if someone does not apply for Indian visa or OCI because they do not have to go to India, then they could still go to other countries like USA or Europe right as long as they follow travel requirements for US or any other European country?
Hi Ekta once you have Canadian passport
1. You don’t need visa for US. I am sure you would know that you would still go through immigration check.
2. Many European / other countries also gives easy access to Canadian. You may want to check with particular country you wish to travel as the norms keeps changing. Overall your assessment is good.
3. You can travel to India even without OCI however you will require visa as you are Canadian citizen. OCI will give you status in India like PR in Canada with exception that it is for lifetime .
It’s purely your wish to get OCI, it’s makes easier for people with link to India travel hassle free

Video was certainly very informative. I recently submitted OCI APPLICATION for myself and my son. Now status on OCI indicate that it has received by Toronto On Jun7. Now what next happens - I paid courier services 53 dollars not sure it covers both since no idea what is covered. Now have been calling and raising tickets but not getting hold any thing. What happens next do they call up or just courier the OCI card to us. Infact tracking number on OCI application indicate the status of Original Surrender Certificate which they send it back to us. Is that the same tracking number is applied for OCI card ?

There is no original document to be submitted. Now that you have raised the tickets just relax and see the status of application. Once this is done from CGI you should get your OCI card if not then you reach out to BLS. It takes at-least 4-6 weeks to process. Since it is already with CGI you need not worry

Thanks for the video. In the OCI application for Minor, I have 2 questions:
1. What should be the nationality of father and mother? We just got the citizenship of Canada in 2024 and got the Canadian passport a month back. but we were born in India and were earlier having Indian Passport.
2. What should come in the relation with the root Indian? As a father , I am applying for OCI on behalf of my son. We as a family moved to Canada 3 years back.

Hi since you are now Canadian you will choose Canada as option. In your each Individual section you will choose “self” as you all were Indian before acquiring the Canada citizenship. If your son was born in Canada then his application choice will be father.
Also can you call BLS once to verify documents requirement to be on safer side

Ranjani I have commented every step I did. It has been a while if you don't find mention that it has to be pasted. Don't do it. If I have mentioned only then you paste. You need to send one hard copy for sure

Hi Gopi, I am trying to send the docs via purolator from Richmond Hill to BLS Brampton by myself but purolator has given me a quote of $35+tax. Feels like $11 charge for you may be because you were closer to Brampton. Is my assumption right? If that is the case May be it would be better for me to opt for BLS pickup service then. What do you say?
I am not sure. It could be. Please don’t send through Purolator directly BLS don’t accept it anymore. Either go for walk-in or call BLS who will share payment link after which Purolator will pick from your home and drop it.

So to get an OCI card you need a surrender certificate and both need to be couriered separately:
So total costs are $345+7.40+$95 courier fee
Plus: $119+3+7.40+$95 courier fee.
So total cost for OCI card is: $671 plus fees for photos $20 for surrender and $20 for OCI
So total costs are $710
Ridiculous.

1.While uploading the documents under EMPLOYMENT/ WORK LETTER section, I have uploaded my employment letter.(later I realized that my employment letter is not necessary and tried to delete it but i couldn't able to do it. It would be helpful if you tell me how to delete it)
2. I have uploaded my PR and my wife's PR documents but My wife's PR card is expired however she has applied for PR renewal which is in process. Will it be a problem for this OCI process?
3. Do we need self attestation on our kid's birth certificate and long form certificate?

Kalyan, you can open a new application to circumvent the upload document problem. I am not sure how the document can be deleted as it has been some time. Application is not final untill it is completely filled and you pay money 💰
Regarding PR card(expired) I have no idea. For the OCI application when I was filling I realised that anyone parents/grandparents need to be Indian citizen. Logically expired PR of wife should not be problem however those handling documents can be tricky. Quick call to BLS would be a good idea.
For the self attestation of, yes copy of long form and birth certificate needs to be signed by both parents

Hi Neha preferably send seperately, BLS is funny. Logically they should accept multiple documents sent in one post but logic doesn't work with them.
I sent docu directly via Purolator, they gave tracking number. My BLS was Brampton

While there are many online software available I would not recommend for passport due to sensitivity. Insead use paint to open photo and resize but remember to make duplicate copy. Even reducing to 80% will give significant savings
Regarding family ties. I don't have the answer to your question however logically If I want to be OCI I should get without anyone in India if I was Indian before

Since I am utilizing the BLS-Pickup-Drop for the courier, do I need to add extra amount on the 2 Demand Drafts, or just pay the $345 and $7.4 ??
I ask this because on the BLS-OCI-Fee structure page they have said something like "Kindly Provide Demand Draft/Money order only in favor of BLS International Services Canada Inc., which includes BLS Service charges + Return courier fees, to send back your processed application."

1 $345 will be paid in manner of CGI/HC
2. $7.4 for BLS
For the pick up and drop service BLS will send you the link to do online payment. Just make sure to ask for breakdown of service charge to avoid any surprises which you have not asked for. Just follow the video and you will not go wrong
