Talk to the old man by the wall of books near the farm tree. He should update your Hunter Notes if you've been gathering tracks diligently. The higher the research level, the more info is unlocked and the less difficult it is to track a monster. If you've unlocked that whistle thing that summons the Small Monster Uber (TM), you can ride it to your chosen monster once you pin the monster (or just pin a destination on the map in general.) It really helps to get un-lost in some maps and frees up your hands a for bit so they can rest.
