I bought one because of your video. I love mine! 280,000mi and running really strong. I changed LBJ’s and timing belt in the first week of ownership to make it last even longer.
You may well know this and just didn't mention it. There are a couple of plastic T connectors on the heater hoses that get brittle and break causing a loss of coolant and overheating that will stop you in your tracks. Cheap, easy fix to stop what could be a big problem. Plenty of TH-cam videos on it. Also, if the original radiator is still in there, it should be changed before a failure leads to coolant in the transmission. With that, you will have covered al of the Sequoia weak points. Proud Gen1 Tree owner and these things are beasts, but often unnoticed, as you say. They are kind of an offensive lineman in football. Big and strong but not really flashy.
I have an '05 Sequoia with 200K miles. It is dead silent for squeaks and rattles, even over washboard roads. I'm still on the original rear latch! Thanks for sharing!
just bought a sequoia about a month ago and ordered your lift from 1stgen (modified it a bit) but he was awesome to work with. excited to install it within the next week
Adhesive velcro: Use the felt half of stick-on velcro strips to the black bumpers on the lower side of the hatch. This will wedge the hatch more securely against the latch. I put tiny squares of felt under the center console lid bumpers to tighten that up as well. Also I've used a velcro to secure the cover on the rear storage area because the plastic clips are old and tired. Kitchen lights: I've replaced the map/entry/dome lights with LEDs but another rear cargo light solution are under-cabinet kitchen lights. Most are rechargeable through USB, nice and bright, low profile, and can be used as an emergency work light/flashlight since most mount by velcro or magnetic plates. Trash Bag: Those loops on the side are meant for plastic grocery bags. Speaking of grocery bags, make a trash bag by looping one handle of a bag through the slide out cup holder in the dash. I've put on Amazon special headlights on my truck when I bought it and they lasted 6 years before turning yellow and hazing over. Replacing them again in a few days. I've tried TurtleWax restoration kit and it lasted for 6 months.
2003 with 260K. Replaced coils packs last year. Replaced oil filter housing o-rings. Going on 2nd timing belt. Replaced drivers seat upholstery. Purrs like a kitten. Best tool I own.
im looking at a 2004 with 84 thousand miles seems well kept. im assuming u recommend it lol. my only question is i have 3 kids do u think it’s big enough?
You can fix the storage cover in the rear by hitting it with a heat gun and putting clothespins on it as it cools which will reengage the clips to where they'll catch again
My girlfriend and I are looking at either one of these or a GX for her car. She's getting tired of driving my third gen taco and the third gen 4Runner is mine. Love the black and white look.
Great video, underrated rig for multiple applications. I have a 2005 Sr5 haul 8 people, gear, fold seats slide in plywood. Will tow large trailer, recently hauled my brother’s Prius. 4.7L V8 and drivetrain is fantastic.
Congrats on the house occupancy! Huge milestone. I daily a 1st Gen. Ltd. 4WD. I absolutely love my truck. Wife drives a Lexus GX 460 and she wouldn't trade it except for her old 2004 4Runner Sport. That was our 1st Toyota. I had a manual 2009 Corolla XRS for a commuter. Little ... but zippy and great MPG!
I don’t recall you mentioning it so I apologize if I’m being redundant but for the rear dome light, check fuses. I don’t know anything specifically about Sequoias but you’d be surprised at how many electrical issues are easily fixed by swapping a dead fuse.
Legit got the itch to buy one because of your Sequoia videos last year. Ended up getting an 06 and just bought the “LLOD” lift kit from 1st Gen Offroad. LBJs, heater Ts, Timing belt, GX 460 brake upgrade done so far. Love this thing 😅
I have the latch bypass and interior release on my Sequoia! I use it for camping and sleep in the back, and it's been a GODSEND to have the interior release! My handle hadn't broken but I had to bully/yank at it with both hands to get it to open
I Bought a low mileage, one owner 2007 Sequoia back in 2016. I love this truck currently only 85k miles. Everything about this truck runs smoothly and no rattles! Only thing that I don't like is no dipstick for the transmission fluid so more of a pain to change that.
Its got the land cruiser engine, Tundra frame and drive train. She is a sleeping beast. I have one, and with the v8 engine, I walk tacoma's climbing up hill. Love my sequoia, its like the size of the new 4runner, but with a v8, and still has more room.
Nice to hear that it's going well. The Sequoia just moved to the top of the pile for my next car. Found out two weeks ago that I can't comfortably fit my 6'6" self in a 4Runner. My wife and I want 4 wheel drive capability to extend our camping adventures and there are considerations for starting a family, too. There aren't a lot choices that check the boxes we want. Prices are still a little hard for me to wrap my head around, though.
Rear gate latch was causing the most rattle. At first I thought it was the 3rd row because of wheel balancing, then I thought it was weather stripping on the rear gate and doors, until I finally got to the cause. I wrapped some electrical tape around the rear latch to give it some thickness and the rattle is gone!
My 2005 sequoia also rattles. And I too am ocd about interior noises. I've removed some panels and added some sound deadening. But getting rid of interior noises with the panels is a difficult task. I think you would have to put something like a small weather strip along the plastic edge where it butts up against the sheet metal. The sequoia is also a vibrate'y vehicle. My theory is that the sheet metal is too thin for the size and weight of the body as it sits on rubber body mounts. And there's no body mounts under the center of the body along the sides
Nice walkthrough. I’m almost “done” building mine, and the car seat thing is annoying where it has to be in the middle or behind me, the driver. But luckily there is a ton of space! Mines a 2005 with 313k miles and wish I had a white one 😅 Black shows all the scratches lol

Hi, I’ve been trying to decide between a 4Runner and an Outback Wilderness. What kept you from a 4Runner if you ever looked at them? Congrats on the house, baby and your success.
If you want MPG’s and Forrest trails go Outback. If you want to do Black Bear Pass go 4Runner. I had a 22 4Runner but sold it because of the MPG’s, worst decision of my life. I bought my friend’s 2005 Outback XT manual with a 1” lift but I didn’t realize there was so much wrong with it. I've inquired about that on my rig and it's something to do with a change in vacuum pressure. The brake booster uses engine vacuum, and when the A/C compressor kicks on, it affects the amount of vacuum going to the booster. Don't know if it's indicative of a problem or if it's just the way it is. Mine's been doing it for a while and still stops fine.
